2 Resident Spotlight: Bruce & Doris W. Bruce and Doris during their Resident Spotlight Interview. Bruce and Doris W. grew up within one block of one another, but did not meet until college. Bruce was born in California and lived in Riverside most of his life. His father owned an automobile repair service, and his mother was a socialite heavily involved in various women s associations. Bruce was a star athlete in school. In fact, he played just about every sport for every year in his high school years. He was the first Riverside Poly student to receive a letter in track and field, football, baseball and basketball, and his senior year, he was the school s athlete of the year. He and his brother got along well and played baseball together. Bruce played third baseman and his brother played catcher. His brother went on to join the military, but unfortunately was killed in the war. Bruce, also joined the U.S. Army and was one of the Paratroopers in the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team. While serving during World War II, Bruce fought in five major battles, which includes the Battle of the Bulge. For his service, he received a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry badge. When he returned from the war, he attended school at Riverside City College, where he met his wife, Doris. Doris was born in Enid, Oklahoma, and her family moved to Lancaster, California shortly after. When she was 5-years-old, they relocated to Riverside. Her parents separated when she was very young, and she only really saw her father when he visited. However, her mother was always there for Doris and her brother, and did just fine together. Doris met Bruce when she attended Riverside City College. They had grown up within a block of one another, but did not meet until they were grown. Bruce had offered her a ride to go shopping and after that they were inseparable. They ve been married for 67 years and have two children, a daughter and son, and three grandchildren, one girl and two boys. Bruce went on to letter in baseball, basketball and football at RCC, later transferring to University of Southern California to play baseball and study physical education. Doris studied general education at RCC, later doing secretarial work at the University bookstore where she retired. When Bruce finished at USC, he went back to Riverside to teach physical education and coach baseball. He worked at Central Junior High, Riverside Poly and RCC before retiring. In 2012, Bruce in his RCC Uniform. Bruce was put in the Riverside Sports Hall of Fame, and received a plaque for his accomplishments in playing and coaching. After they retired, the two did a lot of traveling with two other couples. They went about everywhere they wanted. One of their favorite trips was put together by a serviceman, and they traveled to all of the places Bruce was during the war. They went to Germany, France, Belgium and other locations, and they received a warm welcome in the town where the Battle of the Bulge took place because his unit helped finish the war for them. Bruce and Doris have lived a great life and continue to enjoy it at Renaissance Village. They appreciate the friendliness of the staff and their fellow residents. Doris looks forward to the activities and enjoys seeing all of what s planned each week. They both love the Dining Room and the delicious meals the chefs prepare. How to Get a Better Night s Sleep As we age our sleep patterns tend to change. These changes in sleep patterns can result in overall problems with getting to sleep and sleeping well. Older adults may face problems such as having a challenging time falling asleep, waking up more often during the night and waking up earlier in the morning. Older adults experience less time spent in deep sleep, also known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. As infants, we spend about 50 percent of our sleep in REM, however, older adults only experience 20 percent. This smaller percentage in REM sleep can cause older adults to wake up more often. This change in sleep patterns can also cause Chronic Insomnia, Sleep Apnea and sleep disorders like Restless Leg Syndrome. While the number of hours you need to sleep each night varies person to person, individuals should strive to get 7 9 hours of sleep each night. Although these changes in sleep patterns are unavoidable, there are a few things you can do to help combat getting stuck counting sheep. Make a routine and stick to it. Going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning gets your body into the habit of knowing when it s time for bed. Skip the caffeine. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine for at least 3 to 4 hours before bed. Additionally, it s best to avoid alcohol before bed time, some believe it helps sleep, but it negatively impacts your sleep quality. Take a Cat Nap. It s okay to nap, but avoid napping more than minutes Limit Electronic Use Before Bed. Stop using phones and TV one hour before bed, as studies have shown that the blue and Older adults only experience 20 percent of REM sleep. white lights given off by these devices can prevent the brain from releasing Melatonin. Get in the sun. Try to get outside in the sun each day; this allows your body to know when it s time to be awake and when it s not. Consult with your doctor. Lastly, a recent change in medication could be affecting your sleep. Your doctor can recommend solutions for timing, dosage or prescribing an alternative. BRAIN TEASERS Are you great at puzzles? 3 GREAT DAYS AWAIT! Maria during her Employee of the Month Interview. Employee of the Month: Maria Garcia We had a great time at Knott s Berry Farm! Check out this beautiful Fall mobile Bill created. What a great mustache from Flutter Butter! Our Memory Care residents love to get up and dance! We ll toast to a great turn out for the lunch outing to Mimi s Cafe. It was so lovely to have all of the grandchildren and families at the community on Grandparent s Day! Maria Garcia is one of the sweet Caregiver & Med Techs that works in the mornings at Renaissance Village. Maria became a caregiver because seven years ago her grandfather got gangrene on his leg. He spent time in rehab, however, he had a terrible experience because the staff was mean to him and neglected his care. She started taking care of him, and he said to her that when she gets older, she needs to make sure she doesn t treat people the way they treated him. Since then she s developed a love for taking care of elderly people. Maria went to school for Medical Assistance, and she also has her Certified Nurse Assistant License and went to Riverside City College to get her phlebotomy license. Before working at Renaissance Village, she worked for another senior living community in Riverside. She enjoys working with residents because you can learn so much from them. She shares that they teach you without you even realizing it. She loves to hear their stories and is always blown away by the things they ve done and experienced. She loves working at Renaissance Village, and shares that it s a wonderful place to work. Maria s father trained horses on their ranch, and when she was growing up she would dance in big dresses with horses at the local rodeos. She met her husband at the rodeo because he was a bull rider. She has been with her husband, Jose, for six years. Together, they have two children, Ana and Sebastian. Maria enjoys being a mother to her two children. She acknowledges that it can sometimes be stressful, but when the kids are grateful and show love, it makes it all worth it. When Maria is not working, she loves sleeping, watching movies and playing with her kids. She also loves crafting, she likes to sew and is also a great cook. Maria, we appreciate your sweet spirit and Maria in one of her big dresses. the love and compassion you show our residents. Thank you for your hard work and congratulations on Employee of the Month. ARE YOU READY TO GUESS WHO?: The first 2 residents to correctly guess the staff in this photo will receive 2 guest meal tickets! Visit concierge to submit your guess.
