MOVE s interconnection with the other fit pillars RECHARGE, MOOD and FOOD. Find fun ways to MOVE. MOVE for 60 minutes a day. 4 Lesson 1 Welcome Back & Recap Time 10 Minutes Activity Purpose The purpose of this lesson is to welcome the girls back to fitclub 4Girls and to review key messages that were covered in the last session of fitclub 4Girls. Objective In this activity girls will review: Key messages regarding FOOD and its interconnectivity to RECHARGE, MOOD, and MOVE relevant to being fit that were covered in the last session of fitclub 4Girls. 5 Session 5 - Lesson 1 - FOOD Focus Welcome Back & Recap Welcome Welcome the girls to fitclub 4Girls, Session 5. Gather the girls to the center of the activity space. Hand out snacks and beverages to each girl to allow them to fuel up for fitclub 4Girls. Allow time for the girls to eat their snacks. Allow the girls to throw away their scraps from snacks, sanitize their hands if necessary and get ready for the next activity. Cue for Next Activity: Today s main topic is MOVE. Let s find out how much we all know about MOVE. Get ready for the Brainstorm Race. fitclub 4Girls! Session 5 MOVE and its role in fit 5

6 Lesson 2 Brainstorm Race Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity introduces: What MOVE means. MOVE and its connectivity to RECHARGE, MOOD, and FOOD. Objective In this activity, girls will gain further understanding of: What role MOVE plays in being fit. Moving is great for your body and mind. Find ways to MOVE in your day. Materials Needed 5 blank pieces of paper (1 paper for each group of 3-4 participants) 5 pens or pencils (1 for each group) Timer or Stopwatch MOVE Leader Cue Card Lesson 2 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! 7 Session 5 - Lesson 2 - MOVE Focus Brainstorm Race Introduce the Activity Have the girls sit in a circle and give the girls the directions for the upcoming activity. 1. Explain that this activity will help the girls know what fit is. 2. Give the girls the directions for the upcoming activity. a. They will be divided into groups. b. Each group of girls will get one piece of paper and one pen or pencil. c. Each group will pick a leader. d. You will set a timer for 1 minute and then ask a question; the group leader will write down the group s answers. e. When the timer is done, the leader will share the group s answers with everyone. Do the Activity 1. Divide the girls into teams; the number of participants per team should be equal. a. Allow a minimum of 3 girls per group. 2. Have the group pick a leader. 3. Give each group one piece of paper and one pen or pencil. 4. Set a timer for 1 minute and ask the following question: a. What do you think MOVE means? 5. Start the timer and tell the girls to begin brainstorming and talking about what they think MOVE means. 6. Once the timer is up: a. Ask each group (one at a time) to share what they think MOVE means. b. Allow for a brief discussion. c. Next, discuss what MOVE means relative to the MOVE Talk Time! points below. Talk Time! What is MOVE? MOVE is any physical activity you do in a day. o Things like walking, running, playing outside. Moving is great for your mind. o It helps you to focus and remember things. Moving is great for your body. o Strengthens bones, muscles, and your heart. Moving is as simple as dancing, walking, jumping, and running. fitclub 4Girls! Session 5 MOVE and its role in fit 7

8 Session 5 - Lesson 2 - MOVE Focus Check if you know fit 1. ASK: Why should you MOVE in your day? 2. ANSWER: It is good for my body and mind. Remember to be fit Moving is great for your body and mind. Wrap it Up! Message Be fit Challenge yourself. Jump rope to the beat of your favorite song. Cue for Next Activity: Let s learn how we can motivate our MOOD to talk ourselves into moving in our next activity. 9 Lesson 3 Don t Just Sit There Time 10 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity reinforces: How MOOD influences one s desire to MOVE. The need to turn your MOOD around to talk yourself into moving throughout your day. The concept of motivation in terms of turning your I won t around to I will make a healthy choice. Objectives In this activity girls will gain further understanding of: MOOD s influence on your desire to MOVE. Using self-talk to motivate your MOOD so you make healthy choices. o Turn your I won t MOVE around to I will MOVE. In this activity girls will gain an understanding of: When moving is fun it is easier to find times to MOVE in your day. 10 Session 5 - Lesson 3 - MOVE & MOOD Focus Don t Just Sit There Introduce the Activity Have girls continue to stand in a circle and walk in place. 1. Explain that this activity will help everyone learn about how MOOD influences how much we MOVE in our day. 2. Give the girls the directions for the upcoming activity. a. You will draw a MOOD Leader Card from the deck of MOOD Leader Cards and ask a girl the question: 1) Do you feel like moving when you are in this MOOD? If the girl s answer is yes: o You will yell out a MOVE for all of the girls to do while you count to 5. If the girl s answer is no: o The girls will jump and turn in a circle to reface the leader. o As the girls turn around they yell, I need to turn my I won t MOVE around to I will MOVE! Do the Activity 1. Have girls continue to stand in a circle and walk in place. 2. Draw out a MOOD Leader Card from the MOOD deck of Leader Cards and show the girls. 3. Ask a girl, Do you feel like moving when you are (name of MOOD on Leader Card)? a. If the girl s answer is yes: Yell out a MOVE (run in place, jumping jacks, reach high, etc.) for the girls to do while you count to 5. b. If the girl s answer is no: The girls will yell, I need to turn my I won t MOVE around to I will MOVE! as they jump and turn in a circle to reface the leader. 4. 11 Session 5 - Lesson 3 - MOVE & MOOD Focus Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: What should you do when you don t feel like moving? 2. ANSWER: Turn your I won t MOVE around to I will MOVE. Remember to be fit MOOD influences your desire to MOVE. Be fit Motivate your MOOD tonight. If you find yourself sitting on the couch, get up and talk yourself into moving instead. Turn your I won t MOVE around to I will MOVE. Cue for Next Activity: Let s have some fun moving. 12 Lesson 4 Leap Frog Moves Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity reinforces: The importance of the fit component MOVE and the importance and benefits of moving in your day. This activity introduces: The concept of how moving 5-10 minutes periodically in the day can add up to getting the 60 minutes of MOVE you need in a day. Objectives In this activity girls will gain further understanding of: The importance of finding time to MOVE in the day. In this activity girls will gain an understanding of: Periodic times of moving in the day add up to the 60 minutes of MOVE you need in a day. Materials Needed 12 Cones MOVE Leader Cards Timer or Stopwatch MOVE Leader Cue Card Lesson 4 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! Message Notes (page 28) Prepare the Activity Have girls stand in a circle and walk in place while they wait for the activity to be set up. Set up 4 lines using 3 cones for each line. o Spread the 3 cones out to allow enough space for the girls to do the activity. Turn the cones on their side if they are too tall for the girls to leap over. Place the MOVE Leader Cards in a pile at the end of the cones. Scatter the MOVE Leader Cards around to mix up the Leader Cards. MOVE Leader Cards fitclub 4Girls! Session 5 MOVE and its role in fit 12

13 Session 5 - Lesson 4 - MOVE Focus Leap Frog Moves Introduce the Activity Have girls continue to stand in a circle and walk in place. 1. Explain that this activity will help the girls learn about fun ways to MOVE in their day. 2. Give the girls the directions for the upcoming activity. a. This game is played as a relay. b. You will split the girls up into 4 lines; one line of girls for each line of cones. c. The goal of this game is for each girl to leap over the cones in her line to grab a Leader Card to lead her group in the fit MOVE on the Leader Card. Each girl will hop like a frog over each cone to grab a MOVE Leader Card and hop back to the start line. o While the girls are waiting in line, they will march in place and cheer on their team. Once back to the start line, she will lead the girls in doing the movement on the Leader Card for as many times as indicated on the Leader Card. o Note: If she has a MOVE Leader Card with seconds on it, she will count out loud to the number on the Leader Card. Once the group has completed the movement, the girl leading the group will: o Slap the hand of the next girl in line to hop to get her MOVE Leader Card. o Keep her MOVE Leader Card and return to the back of the group s line. 3. The game continues with the next girl in line leaping over the cones to get a MOVE Leader Card to lead her group in doing the movement on the Leader Card. 4. Once each girl has had a chance to lead her group in moving, the entire team will sit. a. First team to have all girls seated wins. b. Continue playing until all teams are seated. 5. If time allows, repeat activity. 6. When game is finished, the girls will return MOVE Leader Cards to the fitclub 4Girls instructor. fitclub 4Girls! Session 5 MOVE and its role in fit 13

14 Session 5 - Lesson 4 - MOVE Focus Do the Activity 1. Split the girls up into 4 groups and have each group form a line behind each line of cones. 2. Have the girls march in place while waiting in line for their turn. 3. You will yell, GO! a. The girl at the front of each line begins hoping like a frog over the cones to get a MOVE Leader Card. b. The girl will hop back to the start line with her Leader Card and lead her group in doing the movement on the Leader Card for the number of times indicated on the Leader Card. c. Once the group has completed the movement, the girl leading the group will: Slap the hand of the next girl in line to hop and get a MOVE Leader Card. Return to the back of the group s line. 4. Once each girl in a line has had a chance to lead her group, the team sits. a. First team to sit down wins. 5. Continue playing until all teams are seated. 6. If time allows, repeat the activity. 7. When the game is finished, girls will return MOVE Leader Cards to the instructor. 8. Ask the girls to walk in place for the Wrap it Up! Message. fitclub 4Girls! Session 5 MOVE and its role in fit 14

15 Session 5 - Lesson 4 - MOVE Focus Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: What is one fun way you can MOVE in your day? 2. ANSWER: Answers will depend on girl s interest. (Answers may be things like dancing, play sports, etc.) Remember to be fit Find time to MOVE in your day; 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there all adds up to the 60 minutes of MOVE you need every day. 16 Lesson 5 - Healthy FOOD Basket Time 10 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity reinforces: The connection between MOVE and FOOD. This activity introduces: The importance of healthy FOOD choices (green light foods). Objectives In this activity girls will gain further understanding of: The importance of fueling your body with fit foods. Healthy foods give you energy to MOVE. Healthy food choices. 17 Session 5 - Lesson 5 - MOVE & FOOD Focus Healthy FOOD Basket Introduce the Activity Have the girls continue to walk in place while standing in the large circle. 1. Explain that this activity is similar to musical chairs. In this activity a girl tells the other girls when to start and stop the moving versus the music in musical chairs. 2. Give the girls the directions for the upcoming activity. a. The girls will stand in a large circle for this game. b. You will pick one girl to step into the center of the circle to be a caller. While in the center the girl is to run in place. c. The girls on the outside of the circle will each get a FOOD Leader Card. d. The girls will place the FOOD Leader Card (face down) on the floor in front of the. e. The caller will yell, Go! and the girls will begin to walk around the outside of the circle of FOOD Leader Cards lying on the floor. f. The caller will remove one FOOD Leader Card from the circle of Leader Cards on the floor and run back to the center of the circle. g. The caller will yell, Stop! h. The girls will try to find a spot with a FOOD Leader Card to stand next to. i. The girl that does not have a FOOD Leader Card to stand next to will join the caller in the middle of the circle. j. The new girl in the middle will look at the FOOD Leader Card the caller chose and tell the girls around the circle what action to do based on the stoplight color of the food. Green - Go! Run in place. Yellow - Whoa! Walk in place. Red - Stop! Freeze in place. k. You will tell the girls why this food is a red, yellow or green light food choice. l. You will lead the group of girls in yelling, Green light foods give me energy to MOVE! as the girls on the outside of the circle begin to walk around the outside of the circle. m. The new girl in the center becomes the new caller. n. The game will continue with the new caller removing a Leader Card, and yelling, Stop! o. The girls in the middle will run in place while the other girls walk around the circle of FOOD Leader Cards. fitclub 4Girls! Session 5 MOVE and its role in fit 17

18 Session 5 - Lesson 5 - MOVE & FOOD Focus Do the Activity 1. The caller yells, Go! and the girls start to walk around the circle. 2. While the girls are walking in a circle around the Leader Cards, the caller removes one FOOD Leader Card from the circle of Leader Cards on the floor. 3. The caller yells, Stop! and girls scramble to stand next to a FOOD Leader Card on the floor. 4. The girl left standing joins the caller in the center of the circle. 5. The girl joining the caller looks at the FOOD Leader Card and yells out the action the girls are to do based on the stoplight color of the food on the card. a. Green Go! Run in place. b. Yellow Whoa! Walk in place. c. Red Stop! Freeze in place. 6. Using the Leader Prompt on the Leader Card, the fitclub leader tells the girls why this food is a red, yellow or green light food choice. 7. Lead the girls in yelling together, Green light foods give me energy to MOVE! as the girls on the outside of the circle begin to walk around the outside of the circle. a. The girls in the center run in place. 8. The new girl in the center becomes the caller for the next round of removing a Leader Card and yelling, Stop! 9. The game continues with fewer FOOD Leader Cards and more girls joining together in the center. 10. The game continues for the time allotted. Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: What foods get you fueled up in your day? 2. ANSWER: Any green light food choices. Remember to be fit FOOD is fuel for moving. Eat green light foods to have energy to MOVE. Be fit Begin each day with a green light FOOD choice to fuel your body and brain. Cue for Next Activity: It s time to get some RECHARGE. 19 Lesson 6 RECHARGE Your Body and Brain Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity reinforces: RECHARGE and its influence on our desire to MOVE. RECHARGE by getting sleep at night and relaxation during the day. Objectives In this activity, girls will gain a further understanding of: Your RECHARGE influences your desire to MOVE. Ways to RECHARGE. Materials Needed CD player or other technology to play music (optional) o Calming music (optional) RECHARGE Leader Cards RECHARGE Leader Cue Card Lesson 6 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! 20 Session 5 - Lesson 6 MOVE & RECHARGE Focus RECHARGE Your Body and Brain Introduce the Activity Ask the girls to stand in a large circle and provide an arm length between each other to allow enough room for stretching. 1. Explain that this activity will introduce ways to RECHARGE their body and brain and why it is important. 2. Give the girls the directions for the upcoming activity. a. You will stand in the center of the circle and tell the girls: They are going to do some breathing and stretching to RECHARGE their energy. Three girls will draw a RECHARGE Leader Card. After the Leader Cards are drawn, you will lead the girls in doing each movement shown on the RECHARGE Leader Card. b. Ask the girls to continue doing the three RECHARGE movements at their own pace while you review the Talk Time! lesson points. Do the Activity 1. Have the girls close their eyes and take 3 deep breathes. a. This will allow them to calm down after the previous activity and concentrate on the RECHARGE activity. 2. Choose three participants and have each draw one RECHARGE Leader Card. 3. Demonstrate how to do the movement on each Leader Card. 4. The girls do the three RECHARGE movements as they desire while you, the leader, review the Talk Time! lesson points. 5. If time allows, this would be a great opportunity to also read the RECHARGE fit tips on the Leader Cards and use the Leader Prompt to explain the reason the fit tip matters. fitclub 4Girls! 21 Session 5 - Lesson 6 MOVE & RECHARGE Focus Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: Name a way to RECHARGE. 2. ANSWER: Getting sleep or any relaxing activity is a correct answer. Remember to be fit When you get your RECHARGE you have energy to MOVE. Be fit Get your RECHARGE tonight to have energy to MOVE tomorrow. o Get hours of sleep tonight. Cue for Next Activity: We re almost done with fitclub for the day! We ve learned a lot about MOVE today. It s time to take a fit challenge for this week. 22 Lesson 7 Closing Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity provides a time to recap the main fit messages introduced during fitclub 4Girls and to challenge the girls to make one fit choice throughout the next week. This activity will also allow the leader to gain an awareness of what the girls have learned in fitclub 4Girls during this session with the use of the My fit Thoughts worksheet. This activity reinforces: o Challenging the girls to make a fit choice every day in the coming week. o The fitchant. o The fit-check. Objectives In this activity girls will gain further understanding of: Moving is great for your body and mind. Find fun ways to MOVE throughout your day. Shorts bursts of minutes of moving in your day can add up to the 60 minutes of the MOVE you need in a day. Turn your I won t MOVE around to I will MOVE! Make healthy food choices to have energy to MOVE. RECHARGE to have energy to MOVE. 23 Session 5 - Lesson 7 MOVE & fit Focus Closing Check for Readiness Activity - My fit Thoughts 1. Thank the girls for doing a great job at fitclub today. 2. Hand out a pen or pencil to each participant. 3. Tell the girls you want to know their thoughts about fitclub today. 4. You will be giving them a My fit Thoughts paper to fill out and return to you. 5. You will read the questions and they can write their answers. 6. Hand out the My fit Thoughts for each girl to complete. a. Read the questions to the girls: What fit piece did you like learning about today? o Participants will circle their answer (RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD or MOVE) Write down one thing you learned about the fit piece you circled in question #1. Write down one fit thing you plan on doing this week. How easy or difficult do you think it will be to complete the one fit thing from question #3 this week? o Participants will circle their answer (Super Easy, Easy, Doable, Hard Really Hard) b. Allow 2 minutes for the girls to complete the My fit Thoughts paper. c. When the girls are finished, ask them to return their completed My fit Thoughts paper to you. 24 Session 5 - Lesson 7 - MOVE & fit Focus fit tip Challenge - fit Challenge Tracker 1. After the girls turn in their My fit Thoughts paper, have the girls draw a fit Challenge Card from the fit Challenge Card deck. 2. Explain to the girls that the fit Challenge Card is meant to be taken home and used throughout the week to challenge them to make a fit choice every day. 3. Show the girls where the fit challenge is on the card. 4. If they do the fit challenge on the card during the day, they can mark the day s box with an X. 5. Tell the girls to keep their fit Challenge Card in a place where they will see it each day. This will help remind them to do their challenge. fit-check Reminder: 1. Remind the girls to do the fit-check and to talk themselves into moving in their day. a. fit check is about doing 3 things when making a choice: 1) Check Your RECHARGE 2) Check Your MOOD 3) Choose to make a fit choice Handouts 1. fit Challenge Card for each girl 2. FOOD is what you eat and drink to give your body energy to MOVE and your mind energy to think. Think Your FOOD and choose your FOOD like a stoplight: o Green light foods are Go foods: (Eat a bunch great fuel for your body). o Yellow light foods are Whoa foods: (Just a little a little/not often foods). o Red light foods are Stop foods: (Not so much stop and think before you eat).
