1 COWBOY ACTION NEWS The Monthly Publication of the Lone Star Frontier Shooting Club & Comanche Valley Vigilantes The Ormsby Ranch, Cleburne, Texas August 2016 August 2016 Cowboy Action Shooting Calendar Saturday 13 th & Sunday 14 th LSFSC Monthly Match Hawaiian Shirt Weekend Begin Signup 8:30 am Safety Meeting - 9:15 am Match Starts 9:30 am Sunday 21 th Trinity Valley Regulators Saturday 27 th Monthly Wild Bunch Match Saturday 27 th & Sunday 28 th CVV Monthly Match Hawaiian Shirt Weekend Begin Signup 8:00 am Safety Meeting - 9:00 am Match Starts 9:30 am RANGE NOTICE Aloha! Hawaiian Shirt Weekend and Theme Party Wear your Favorite Shirt FROM The CVV President By Shady McLarry SASS #62056 Life The Texas summer is in full effect now, so when you come out to the shoot be sure and bring plenty of water with you...! Also the range is very dry please watch your cigarettes on the range and on the ranch property. I would also like to ask that you refrain from shooting real black powder, substitute black, i.e. Triple 7, APP should be ok but if your load spits out sparks please wait until the range gets some rain. Speaking of heat, for the month of August if you would like to go Hawaiian, as in Hawaiian shirt, shorts a hat and boots I think we would have a category just for that. Maybe even an award for best dressed surfer dude or dudette...! October CVV match weekend will be our annual match and also the SASS State Wild Bunch championship on the same weekend. And yes they are two separate matches with two separate entry fees. Ten stages of cowboy action and ten stages of wild bunch. \ FROM THE LSFSC PRESIDENT By Rock Rotten SASS # Well folks, the heat is on full blast and we have several more weeks to go. Rock runs best in the heat but even I have been feeling the effects. I shot the TSRA Regional last Saturday at Texas Ten Horns and had a great time and shot a new personal best 6 stage match. BUT, I was slap wore out and didn t stay to shoot the next day like I planned. Man was it hot! Couldn t be that I had a brand new puppy to take care of now could it? As most of you know, I lost my Aussie BB several weeks ago unexpectedly due to cancer. Well, I m whole again as I found my new companion Rebe last Friday one of them there border collies. If you ve never had or known a border collie they are without a doubt the smartest dog out there but they are chocked slap full of energy. They require lots of attention and a different kind of training to be great house pets. They are in serious need of a job to do. She has 3 of them; 1) Watch the house and keep the criminals away when I m gone 2) Warm me up when I m cold, and 3) Carry her weight in bullets if/when Armageddon hits.

So far so good. With the democratic and Republican conventions over, the last of the Presidential election cycle is here. It s just a few short months until the election and this is a very important one. I see the media has gotten over its infatuation with Donald Trump and is back fully in the tank for the liberal, progressive, commie, democrat pukes. Lyin crooked Hillary once again gets a pass and it s absolutely disgusting. The corruption runs very deep in that party. All the way from the bottom to the top and the low information voters are eating it up. They just don t get it. Now I m not the biggest Trump fan but I really like the fact that he is not a career politician and is not one of the establishment elites. All our republican establishment has done is capitulate to Obama s agenda time and time again while giving lip service to the people who voted them into office. I believe Trump when he says he will put Americans back to work and bring back manufacturing. I believe him when he says he will make good deals with other countries who ve been taking us to the cleaners for far too long. I believe that if we are expected to protect this entire globe, then those receiving our protection should help pay for it. I believe we should take the oil! I know there is a problem with muslims and I don t want it here! I know I will keep my guns but I d rather not have to fight this government to do it. We ll see the best of the worst the democrat party can throw at Trump as they try and discredit him. They will rig polls and it wouldn t surprise me if they try and rig the election. The proof is already out there as to what they did to Bernie Sanders. Not that s he s any better that that beotch Hillary. I only wish I lived in a swing state so my vote would make a difference. Well, I really don t want to live anywhere but Texas truth be told. So hammer your out of state friend and contacts.
3 ROCK ROTTEN CONTINUED Whoop some sense into a Hillary voter if you can. Just get out there and vote. We cannot afford to let the democrats take over this government at the time we finally rid ourselves of the feckless obama and the racist first lady (?). I m a gonna take a short weekend break from shooting but rest assured I will be back at the range on Lone Star weekend exercising my 2 nd Amendment right our most important right by far. I advise all of you to do the same! The Southwest Regional match is not that far away. Be advised this weekend s Lone Star Monthly Match and the next Comanche Valley Vigilante Monthly Match will be Hawaiian Shirt Weekend. Look for some special lunch dishes from the kitchen by Chula Hoola Kat and party favors by Hot Lava Tamale. No doubt Shady McWannapoopoo McLarry will write some fun stages. So don t forget to wear your best Hawaiian outfit and join us for a great weekend of shooting with a bit of a party afterwards! Cherokee Bill Babb and the Babb Gang By German Jack Fordern SASS # Near death, Cherokee Bill admitted he had killed 23 men. The Babb Family had come to the area about 23 miles south of the present town of Hico, TX about His group of families were respected; they became prosperous, and started the town of Babbsville. When he left home for military service in the Confederacy, Babb left the care of his large property holdings, his wife, and family to a trusted friend and neighbor. During the Civil War, Bill Babb fought for the Confederacy, and served time in a Union prison camp. Upon his return to the area after the War of Northern Aggression, he found that his trust had been misplaced; all of his extensive family holdings had been taken. He and his family were destitute. They had been swindled out of everything Chero-kee Bill was a tough and capable man; while working to rebuild his holdings, though, he got caught up in his revenge upon those he had trusted and them that absconded with his holdings. He eventually rebuilt his family s fortunes, and put together the Babb Gang; this included his son Bill Ike and others. They were a truly bad bunch, feared by most of the community. In the aftermath, disputes followed. In those days, it was common that both sides were equally good and bad. The Babb Gang was toughest. They were a lawless bunch at times. The resulting conflicts involved robberies, murder, arrest, and actions on both sides. During the mid 1870 `s, the bank Babb conducted business with in Waco went bankrupt. Faced with the loss of $6,000, Babb met with the errant bankers. He locked the door, drew out his six-shooter and warned the men to pay-up or be killed. Choosing the former, $6,000 in gold was promptly placed in Babb's hands. Ultimately the disputes, arrests, conflicts and opinions of wrong doings resulted in the Babb Gang burning down the home of US Deputy Marshal John Stull, and Cherokee Bill killing the US Deputy Marshal. He was arrested. However, the fear of Bill s wrath in the community was high. Cherokee Bill told the court that his trial and further disputes would lead to many people getting killed. He proposed that the law just let him go, that he would take the Babb families and move away out of the area. The authorities agreed. However, the Babb people did not move. Some people descended upon the Babb group and moved them out to Callahan and Coleman Counties around the late 1870s. Bill sold out to his brother-in-law John Pancake, and the town was renamed Pancake. Perhaps there is a sign along the highway still. More trouble and killing followed; the whole bunch finally wound up around Langtry, TX. The Babb group prospered around the lawless community of Langtry, where Justice of the Peace Roy Bean somewhat controlled the law in the area. They amassed 400,000 acres of land, raising sheep and goats. After Judge Roy Bean died, the Babb family bought the town of Langtry from the estate of Roy Bean. Without Judge Bean, there was no law, and the area was pretty much controlled by whoever could be the toughest, the strongest, or the most crooked. Bad things were about to happen to the Babbs. Story to continue next month. Stay tuned. (Most of this information was obtained from first person interviews with legendary Big Bend Rancher David Adams of the Adams Ranch and crossed checked with historical records. He is the great-greatgrandson of Cherokee Bill Babb). German Jack Fordern (a.k.a Johnny Baker Jr.) is Texas historian and novelist Johnny Baker Jr. of Dallas, TX. His historical novel, Burnt Alive in Gumption Junction, is available in paperback and Kindle from Amazon.
