3 Welcome to Manhattan Youth After-School Programs! This program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Services as a part of the city s Comprehensive After- School System (COMPASS) School s Out NYC (SONYC). Please review activity descriptions and register on the Manhattan Youth website beginning Monday, October 31. If your child is already enrolled, you do not need to fill out a new registration packet. Please read your weekly s for updates about the program. ADVANCED GLEE: Advanced singers will draw from a variety of popular and classic music, culminating in a performance for family, friends and community. *TRYOUT ADVANCED ORCHESTRA: For advanced students in percussion, strings, woodwind and brass. All instruments welcome! This orchestra will feature at every music concert held at MS104. *TRYOUT ANIME & MANGA LOVERS: Do you love anime? Come watch, read and discuss the latest anime craze! ART PORTFOLIO 8 th Grade ONLY: If you re an 8 th grade student hoping to apply to a fine arts high school, this class will help you create and assemble your visual art portfolio. BARUCH DANCE TEAM: You ll explore dance technique through hip-hop, jazz and a variety of cultural dances while having the opportunity to offer song and choreography suggestions. *TRYOUT CERAMICS: You ll be encouraged to explore your creativity with clay while designing and creating your own pieces of art. CHEERLEADING: Try out for the MS104 Cheerleading Team and learn cheers and routines to perform at basketball games in the winter. *TRYOUT CHESS CLUB: Chess club is open to beginners who want to strengthen their comprehension, ability, and enjoyment of the game. Advanced players should take Competition Chess on Wednesdays. CIVIL AIR PATROL: Learn how to make your own rocket! This class will involve hands-on aviation and space-related activities taught by our friends at Civil Air Patrol. COMIC BOOK ART: In this class, you ll work to create your very own comic book characters and stories that will print in a comic! COMPETITON CHESS: Preference is given to players with a USCF membership. The team will attend at least five tournaments on Saturdays throughout the year. Players are expected to participate in as many of these as you can. COMPUTER CODING: Learn a variety of programming languages including Java, Python, and HTML for webpages. COOKING 101: Create delicious dishes while learning culinary basics like safe and proper chopping and measuring techniques. CREATIVE WRITING: This writing class will sharpen your character building and narrative skills as you workshop short stories with your peers. DEBATE TEAM: No matter your level of debate experience, you ll work together to develop research and debate against local middle school teams. Please note, debate matches will occur outside regularly scheduled program hours. DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION: Learn how to write and produce your own music! You ll cover topics ranging from harmony, melody and songwriting to sampling, recording, and beat making. DISSECTION: Whether owl pellet dissections, earthworm examinations, or the inner workings of frogs, this class will show you the inner biology of all things. DRAMA AUDITION PREP 8 th Grade ONLY: This class will involve an array of audition prep techniques to help you gain skills and experience needed to audition for specialized high schools. FENCING: This program is designed to strengthen your fundamentals, agility, and fencing ability. You will explore the sport s complexities while preparing for competition against other teams. FILMMAKING: Learn all aspects of filmmaking as screenwriting, storyboarding, location scouting, acting, directing, filming and postproduction. FITNESS: Build strength and endurance as you re led through a variety of circuited fitness routines, increasing cardiovascular health and flexibility. FRIDAY FOODIE & a MOVIE: Create a delicious snack and then kick your feet up and relax while watching a movie with friends! It s the best way to end the school week and kick off the weekend! GAME LABS: Play fun, interactive card and board games with friends as you unwind from a long week at school. GREEN TEAM: We will explore how things grow, the way our ecosystems work, and learn how to live more sustainable lives. Topics will include renewable energy, gardening, food science and more.

4 GSA (GENDERS AND SEXUALITIES ALLIANCE): This workshop, led by Guidance Counselor Ms. Jalayer, is a place where you can talk about issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. You will discuss current events, start LGBTQ initiatives, and educate for our community! IMPROV COMEDY: Blending performance, creative writing skills, critical thinking and problem solving, this class will teach you to work together with a team of performers in order to create a comedic scene without the use of a script. LEGO ROBOTICS: You ll be introduced to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots and represent your school team in city-wide competitions as part of the FIRST LEGO league. LIBRARY LEADERS: With the help of the school librarian Ms. Terzic, you ll create special projects that increase literacy efforts throughout MS104. LOCATION DRAWING: In this architecture and environment-focused art class, you will increase depth perception and detail in your work as you go on walking trips to sketch buildings and other points of interest in the surrounding neighborhood. MAKE IT & TAKE IT: Do you enjoy arts and crafts and putting your creative mind to work? Then this club is for you! Join your peers to create some amazing projects, including clay beads, bracelets, felting and more! MATH COUNTS: Math Counts is a coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging contests. PHOTOGRAPHY: Take your pictures to the next level by practicing digital photography skills and editing them using imaging software. PINTERESTING ART: You will explore craft-based websites like Pinterest to identify art projects that peak your curiosity, and then recreate them. RPG TABLE TOP GAMING: Love video games but hate the fact you can only do what the game lets you? Want to be a character of your choosing? Play tabletop gaming, a combination of strategy, communal storytelling, and theatrical improvisation. SCIENCE MEDLEY: Calling all scientists! Here you ll explore all realms of science, examining the natural world in and outside of school. Nothing will be left unexplored! SCULPEY CLAY CREATION: You ll knead, mold, and create an endless assortment of tiny sculptures and beads with this brightly colored polymer clay. Work alone or collaborate with others to create a themed diorama. SHAOLIN KUNG FU: Under the tutelage of a Kung fu Master from the New York Chinese Cultural Center, you will advance through the stages of this most ancient and traditional form of Chinese martial arts. SHSAT PREP: In this skill-building class, you ll develop testtaking skills for the Specialized High School entrance exam. This class will be a required double session, covering both math and ELA. SKETCHBOOK: This class provides you with instruction on the timeless art of illustration and detailed sketching. You ll develop themed drawings and work towards independently creating a semester- long portfolio. SPA SCIENCE: Estheticians-in-training will receive instruction on skills used in the cosmetology shop such as hair styling, skin care, make-up, and salon management. SPANISH: This introductory language course will cover the basics of Spanish, teaching you vocabulary and STEP TEAM: Join a team of dynamic performers as you learn this style of dance, where footwork is the most important aspect. STORY BOOK CREATION: In this writing and art class, you ll mold a completed story from start to finish, completing a hardcopy, bound book. STUDENT COUNCIL: House Representatives will work together to make Simon Baruch a stronger community. Brainstorm service ideas and projects you can use to improve MS104 quality of life. STUDY LAB: Study lab provides you an opportunity to work on homework in a quiet environment. You re required to bring an assignment, reading materials, or projects to complete. THINK ELEPHANTS: In collaboration with Think Elephants International, this conservation-minded class will increase your awareness of not only declining elephant populations but of all species. You ll also get to be a part of a year-long scientific study. WATERCOLOR ILLUSTRATION: In this illustration class, you will use watercolors to create stunning projects. Join this class to work from observation using everything from figure models and objects to photos. YEARBOOK: Join the Yearbook Club and help preserve all the great memories from the school year! You will design, create, and publish the school yearbook for the MS104 community. YOGA: Learn the basics of yoga like poses and meditation practices as you incorporate healthy habits into your daily life. ZINE MAKERS: Collaborate with a team of fellow student journalists and learn design and editorial skills to complete a professional looking, informational zine on subjects you care about.
