2 Biography The University of Michigan Dance Team is a team of Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior members from all over the nation! This nationally ranked team competes at Universal Dance Association's Dance Nationals in January in Orlando, Florida. The purpose of this team is to be ambassadors to U of M representing a wide range of dance talent. We perform at ALL home basketball and football games, as well as several other university events: Pep rallies, alumni events, and other university and community events. We also devote time to charities, holiday events, campus and community activities. March 2018 Dear Dance Candidates: Welcome to the University of Michigan Dance Team Tryouts! Listed below is an Audition Schedule that will be helpful for all interested candidates. Please keep in mind the following information: All paperwork and fees are due at the first cut clinic. Auditions are only open to candidates, U of M coaches and judges. Audition information is confidential. Candidates must be current University of Michigan students or enrolling in the Fall. Waitlisted/Deferred students may audition but will not be informed of their status on the team until they are accepted and enrolled for Fall. Students must be enrolled Full-Time. Proper attire is mandatory for the audition. You must bring a copy of your M-card, admission letter or waitlisted/deferred letter to the first clinic. We recommend that each dance candidate take time to read the attached audition packet. Being a member of this team is a serious commitment and each candidate must be sure they can follow the guidelines for the entire season. Please make sure that you are able to comply with the rules and are able to make the commitment before you audition. Once auditions are complete, please check your to find out if you have been selected. All candidates will be ed. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS To be selected for our first round of auditions, candidates must submit a 2 minute solo routine to vspotsos@umich.edu NO LATE R THAN 2/28/18. Videos may be posted to a private YouTube Link or ed via an.mp4 format. This solo should be either Jazz, Contemporary or Lyrical. Students will be notified NO LATER than 3/2 if they are invited fo r the second round on 3/16. However, submit your video as soon as possible. We will notify students as we receive the vide os for travel purposes. During the second round, candidates will learn and perform the Fight Song, a jazz routine, contemporary routine and a hip-hop routine. They will also perform the required elements listed below along with quick pom sideline combinations. If selected for final cuts, candidates will also receive an additional video of three sidelines to learn for the final cuts. Technique and execution of all elements must meet appropriate technical standards. 4 University of Michigan Dance Team Information Sheet Potential Time Involved marks the seventh season that The University of Michigan Dance Team is under the Athletic Department. Therefore, members will not pay for team dues as in the past. However, members will have compliance procedures, academic procedures and policies. More information to follow after team auditions. The Dance Team season begins after auditions and ends in April However, preparation for the following season begins immediately after Nationals in January. In preparation for our season this year, we will attend Universal Dance Association s College Camp at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin from August 1st August 5th. (ALL students will be required to be in Ann Arbor by 9:00 A.M. on July 29th.) After camp, we will begin our intensive practices on August 16 th in preparation for the Fall season. Dates and Times are TBA. All members must attend summer camp and intensive week practices as they are mandatory. It is imperative that you access your all summer to stay aware of program and team developments. Students will also receive workout schedules and a DVD of routines to learn over the summer. During the school year, we will practice at least four times per week and practices increase as we prepare for Nationals. Students will also be required to participate in 2-3 team workouts/week. You may have to adjust your class schedule for practices. You must audition to be on our "Nationals Team" and for our home football games. No performances are guaranteed. All members must be selected for each performance. Additional practices will be scheduled on an as needed basis. Individual practices are required and will consist of dance classes and physical fitness training. Length of practice time will be up to three hours. You will also be required to participate in all team fundraisers and community performances. We do not have our practice schedule yet for due to facility transitions. Once that schedule is determined, we will let you know. Members have priority class scheduling through the University so that you can schedule classes around practice times. Practices will range from 2-3 hours/day, 4 days a week. Practice Schedule Season Tuesdays, Wednesdays Thursdays - 7-9:30 A.M. Sundays A.M. Workouts Season Mondays A.M. Fridays P.M. Performances may include local, college and professional athletic events, holiday events, parades, philanthropy events, etc. Contract All members will be required to read and sign the Michigan Dance Team and Athletic contracts before the year begins. General Program Rules The team will be considered good will ambassadors and be positive role models for Ann Arbor and The University of Michigan. Approximate Expenses Due to the recent transition into Athletics, member expenses are minimal. 4
