1 Oak Trace Tribune Attendance Line A Message from Mrs. Lynch It was great to welcome all of our new Kindergarten families during Kindergarten registration on Wednesday! We are looking forward to a fun day next Friday for our Grandparents and Special Friends Day! Please remember that we cannot accommodate all of our visitors for lunch that day, so they will need to leave Oak Trace during our lunch times. Please also do not ask to take your students out during lunch on Grandparent s Day. Thank you for your help and cooperation in making this a great day for all.. Next week we will also have our fourth grade program, Delirium. This is such a great program as we travel through Indiana s past. Special thanks to Mrs. Paul for all of her hard work with the fourth-graders. Next week our third-graders will take part in the Indiana IREAD assessment Monday-Wednesday. We have the Underground Railroad on Saturday the 23rd at WHS and then on the 25th we will have the district volleyball tournament at WHS in support of Relay for Life. This is always a great night of family fun as the various buildings challenge one another in a fun game of volleyball! Anyone interested must attend one of the tryouts. For more information, visit: Build the Rock - Brick by Brick The Build the Rock Capital Campaign has launched its' Brick by Brick drive. Be a part of the future of Westfield Athletics and leave your legacy by purchasing a Plaza Entryway Brick at our new Community Stadium. A limited number of bricks are available in two sizes: 16" x 16" - $500 or 4" x 8" - $250. Each can be engraved with your name and personal message and will be featured in the Stadium Plaza Entryway. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. For more information, please see the attached flyer. 3 Underground Railroad Walk and Run Don t miss the Underground Railroad Run on March 23 at Westfield High School. This is a great opportunity to join together to celebrate health and fitness and support public education in our community. The 5k race starts at 9 a.m., followed by the 3k walk at 9:30 and awards ceremony at 10:15. Plan to visit the Health Fair (8-11:30 a.m.) and meet many local health and fitness providers who have information to share. It s not too late to enter the run or walk! Registration forms are at all Westfield Washington Schools or online at or by calling (317) You can also drop by the Westfield Ameriana Bank to turn in a registration form and they will donate $5 to the Education Foundation for each of the first 150 entries. Remember to enjoy a delicious pasta buffet dinner at the WHS cafeteria on March 22, 5-8 p.m. The Rotary Club of Westfield (in partnership with the Education Foundation) will host the PastaFest to kick off the weekend. Complete dinner info and pricing is on the race registration form, contact Keltie at (317) for reservations. COMMIT TO BE FIT Regular Soda vs. Diet... A regular 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola contains 143 calories, but a can of Diet Coke or Coca-Cola Zero contains only one. Calorie-wise, yes, the diet version seems healthier, but if you take a look at the ingredients, there's a big difference. Diet Coke and Coke Zero contain aspartame, also called NutraSweet or Equal, while Coke is made with sugar. Aspartame is 180 to 200 times sweeter than regular sugar! Some side effects from Aspartame include headaches, dizziness, mood changes, or skin reactions after consuming it. Aside from that negative, even though it's low in calories, diet soda may also lead to weight gain. Excessive sugar intake causes tooth decay and has been linked to increased risks of obesity, inflammation and chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Truthfully, soda in general is not healthy, whether it's diet or regular. It offers no nutritional value whatsoever, so if you can give it up altogether your body will greatly benefit. Go for plain old crisp and refreshing water as your beverage of choice.

4 SPECIALS Classes have been learning all about tennis. We have some future tennis stars here at Oak Trace. Tennis is such an inexpensive sport and so much fun to play as a family. As the weather warms up, consider a quick game of tennis with your family for some great exercise! Love is nothing in tennis, but in life it s everything. Have a FITastic weekend. Mrs. Grimmer March 21 the 4 th graders will be performing Delirium: A Trip through Indiana History. The program will start at 7:00 in the Westfield High School auditorium. Third graders have started to learn the music for their program, Econo-Man. They will be performing on Thursday, April 18. Have a Harmonious Weekend! Mrs. Paul I hope you have had excited children coming home telling you all about our upcoming author visit! Awardwinning children's author, April Pulley Sayre, will be spending the day with us on Friday, April 12th! She will be speaking with ALL STUDENTS and sharing her love of writing and nature! We have been learning about her and reading several of her books during our library time! An order form was sent home with your child, earlier this week, where you can choose some of her amazing books to be your very own! She will sign them when she is here on April 12th! PLEASE BE SURE TO GET ALL ORDERS RETURNED BEFORE THURSDAY, MARCH 28th! I AM "FILLING" THE ORDERS AS THEY COME IN, SO THE SOONER YOU GET YOUR ORDER/PAYMENT IN...THE BET- TER! Also, Barnes and Noble contacted me about having author, Chad Morris, come speak to our 3rd and 4th graders on March 27th! He has written The Inventor's Secret which is "showcased", right now, at our local Barnes and Noble bookstore! He will be at Oak Trace from 1:25-2:15 in our MPR! I will be sending home an order form to purchase his book and have it autographed while he is here! He will also be at Barnes and Nobles, that evening, to meet people and sign his book! 5 TOTS Child Care and All Aboard Programs to host open enrollment The TOTS Child Care and All Aboard Programs open enrollment is March TOTS Child Care is for children ages 20 weeks through 4 years. The All Aboard Program is for those children entering Kindergarten in For more information please join us at Monon Trail Elementary School in the Multipurpose room on March 6 at 4:30 p.m. If you are unable to attend, you may call the Student Support Porgrams Enrollment Desk at for more information. Westfield Summer Camps open enrollment begins on March 1 Student Support Programs has unveiled all of its exciting Westfield Summer Camps. Registration information is available online at Relay for Life WWS Staff Volleyball Tournament It's that time of year again where the WWS Staff will be competing to raise money and awareness for Westfield s Relay for Life. The Volleyball tournament will be Monday, March 25, 6 p.m. in the WHS MPIF and gym. At the beginning of the tournament, we will be honoring cancer survivors from all schools including staff and families of students. Also, names, in memory of, will be announced at this time. Admission is $5 per family or $2 for individuals. Concessions will be available. Let s honor and remember those who have fought the great fight! Come out for this special event and support members of your school's staff to raise money to support cancer research! Be sure to bring posters and your school spirit to cheer your teachers on!
