1 Sodbusters RC Flying Club News Letter THE MEETING The meeting was called to order by Scott Russell at 6:29pm. We had 19 members at the meeting. New Members or Guests Jim Walker has joined the club and purchase a kit and an ARF. Looking for a little advise has he continues with his kit build. Was told that there would be plenty of help if he needed it. Dave Coen was a past member and has rejoined...glad to have you back and hope to see you at the field often. Dan Schmidt has attended a few meeting and now is ready to join...happy to have you. Eric Tillman is a new member...we're all here to help and have fun. Treasurer s Report: Ted Gilbert reported that the club is in good shape for now. Secretary s Report: Marv Sanderson was absent, but Ted Gilbert stated that the club has a membership totaling 97 members. Page 1

2 Old Business At the time of the meeting Scale Sunday was up in the air regarding a specific date, but as of Saturday May 12, it was determined that June 10th would be the date. Refer to the club website for more info. Gary Scoles informed us that 3/4 of the field was fertilized and Darin Quade has sprayed the field for weeds. New picnic tables are located under the shelter and they are bolted down with chain and they should be there a long time. The old picnic tables have been moved out and have been repainted along with the bleachers with a very patriotic red, white and blue. Thank you Gary, Steven Madsen and Dick Hinz!!! Gary Scoles will get new flages from Jeff Linn. Thank you very much to Jeff. We have a lot of patriotic members and flying the American flag and ariplanes go together. Its always nice to see a big US flag flying in the breeze. Thank You Jeff!!! Saturday, May 10th was field clean up. Flight stations were moved and gopher holes were filled. The old evergreens by the toilet were removed and have been replaced with new hardy bushes and hostas. Dick Hinz went through the metal cabinets and threw away many old items and installed new plastic containers to keep items dry and organized. Thanks Dick. Scott Russell used the white board during the meeting to explain the location and the proper use of the flight stations along with the correct flight patterns to be used at the 3 sets of flights stations. Scott thanked everyone who helped. New Business Steve LaSalle would like combat moved to Sunday. There was some discussion, but in knowing that combat would be entertaining and that the heats would not take long, the club approved the move. ZAGGI combat will be brought back beginning immediately on Sunday evenings around 6 pm. The club has been approached about the possibility of non club members using our field to fly kites. A discussion was held and a vote was taken in favor of the kite flyers noting that if its too windy for most members to fly that the kite flyers could use the field. Three restrictions were made: 1) If a RC pilot shows up and wants to fly, the kite flyer must take down the kite right away. 2) The kite must be 25 ft away from any fixed object, whether it be picnic tables, the start-up tables, flag pole, fencing or parked cars. 3) Kite flyer must have prior permission from the club before flying kites at the field. Show & Tell Obie Lillo brought in his Top Flite Stinson Reliant with a 101" wing span. The plane weighs 20 lbs and is powered by an OS stroke single cylinder turninga 18x6 prop. He gave a little history of the Reliant and that the plane he has with the corresponding number N17154 is also on the real plane that exist in San Diego. That plane was built in 1941 and is still in service today. Obie's Reliant is 1/5 scale. A beautiful plane, can't wait to see it fly!! The Raffle There was no Raffle for this month. 3 RealFlight G2 Lite Simulator Loaner Program The system requirements below are what the manufacture considers to be the minimum PC configuration in which RealFlight G2 should be installed. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Windows XP*, 2000*, ME or 98 Voodoo II cards are not supported because they do not allow Local administrator access required for Windows XP or you to run in a window or view a menu while full screen) 2000 DirectX 8.1 (or above) compatible sound card Intel Pentium 300 or equivalent processor 500 MB hard drive space 64 MB RAM 4x CD-ROM drive DirectX 8.1 (or above) compatible video card with Super VGA monitor at least 8MB of RAM (Note that Voodoo I and USB port There is a $ deposit that is paid to the person that has the software. Sodbusters Combat Fly Sodbuster is having a SSC Combat Fly on Sunday June 03 rd starting at 1:00pm. Root Beer Float Fun Fly On June 9 th, Come and fly at Sodbuster Flying Field and enjoy a nice cool Root Beer Float Scale Sunday Fly In Sunday June10th at Sodbusters RC. This is a fly for fun event only. All scales, eras, military and civilian welcome. $5.00 landing fee includes lunch, desert and beverages. Float Fly June 16 is the first of two Float Fly.starting at 10:00am A Word from the Safety Officer Hi everyone. This month I would like to talk about good pilot etiquette and sportsmanship. Once in awhile I see some of our members take off, fly and stand somewhere other than the designated pilot stations. We are supposed to use these pilot stations so pilots can let the other pilots know what their actions are. Some of the actions are: COMING OUT when you are leaving the pit area and entering the runway. TAKING OFF when you are ready to takeoff. LANDING when you are ready to land your airplane. DEAD STICK when your engine quits running and you have to make an emergency landing. ON THE FIELD when you have to walk on the runway to retrieve your airplane. I M CLEAR to let other pilots know you are off the field. OUT OF CONTROL or I DON T HAVE IT when you lose radio contact with your airplane. TOUCH AND GO when you are practicing landings. FLY BY when you are going to make a low pass down the runway. All the above actions must be called out Loudly and Clearly so others can hear you. When you are ready to taxi out onto the runway from the pit area, look to see if anyone is setting up to land their airplane. If someone is in the process of landing, wait in the pit area until they land their airplane. Then call out that you are COMING OUT and taxi away Page 3

4 from the people and walk out to the pilot station. Once you are at the pilot station, then you can announce to the other pilots that you are TAKING OFF. DO NOT TAKE OFF and/or FLY your airplane some where else on the field other than the designated pilot station. When you need to go out on the runway to retrieve your airplane, you must call out ON THE FIELD, so the other pilots know your intentions. When you go out on the field, you must do so as quickly as you can. The airplanes that are in the air cannot stay in the air very long. When you are clear of the runway, you must shout out I M CLEAR to let the other pilots know you are clear of the runway. After you have landed your airplane, taxi your airplane back, parallel to the orange fence. Once you reach the orange fence, you can shut off your engine and walk your airplane back into the pits. DO NOT taxi your airplane back into the pit area. Taxiing into the pit area is highly prohibited. So when you go out to the field to do some flying, be courteous to your fellow pilots, follow the rules and be safe. But most of all, have fun. This Months Airplane Installing CA Hinges Tips & Tricks CA hinges have been the topic of many discussions here at RCU. It seems that everyone has their favorite way to install them, and there are many people who won't use them anymore due to problems they have encountered with them in the past. I'm going to attempt to show not only how they should be installed, but I also would like to make some comments as to what you should NOT do when installing them. For this example, we will assume that we are hinging an elevator to a stab. The first thing you need to do is to cut the slots to accept the hinges. This can be done with an Exacto knife, or an electric slotter. Be sure to keep the slots straight, and in line with each other. Once the slots are cut, drill a small hole that is centered on each of the slots and just about as deep. Then, using an Exacto knife or razorblade, carefully remove a small area of covering around the slots. Here we have the slot with a hole drilled in the center with the covering removed. Next, push a straight pin through the centers of all of the hinges. This will keep any of the hinges from pushing into the stab while the elevator is being attached. _ Page 4

5 Flex the elevator down. Be sure to flex the elevator MORE than it will move in flight! (See notes). Then add 4 to 5 drops of THIN CA to each hinge. Now flip the stab over and repeat this step on the other side. Hinge with pin. Insert the all of the hinges into the stab until the pin touches the trailing edge. IMPORTANT NOTES! Many people have experienced problems with CA hinges. I am not one of them, however I have seen a few bad installations, and I hope to point out some "Do's and Don'ts". Next, slide the elevator onto the hinges. Once it is completely in place, remove the pins. It is my experience that there are 3 main reasons why CA hinges fail. The first is caused by using anything other than THIN CA. Thick or medium CA cannot "wick" into the slots the way it needs to in order to effectively attach the hinges to the wood. THIN CA MUST BE USED! The next reason is poor penetration of the CA even when using THIN. This can be caused by a variety of reasons such as not using enough CA, or by not having removed the covering in the area of the hinge, or even by a tight slot or dense wood (also be sure the CA hasn't gotten thick with age). The CA can't work if it cant get in there. This is the reason for drilling the hole. It is a way to let the CA flow deep into the slot where it can wick sideways across the hinge. Page 5

6 And finally, the next type of failure is when the hinges break. Ok, maybe there are some bad ones out there, but many times, hinge breakage is the fault of the installer. So much emphasis is placed on the all important "gap" that many modelers go through extreme lengths to keep it to a minimum, including not giving their hinges enough room to flex. Let's face it, no matter how small the gap is, it still needs to be sealed. So while it is still important to keep it small, it is EVERY BIT AS IMPORTANT to let it be large enough to allow the hinge to flex freely! This is why you must flex the control surface MORE THAN IT WILL MOVE IN FLIGHT when applying the CA. One final thought... NEVER use accelerator when using thin CA. It only causes the CA to foam up in the gap area and cause undue stress to the hinge. There are other precautions that some people take as well, including drawing a line in the center of the hinge with a crayon to keep the CA from hardening in the flex area. I have never done this, and quite frankly, the idea doesn't sit very well with me. But if you're comfortable with it, by all means go ahead and do it.
