Congratulations on choosing the School of Greensboro Ballet as your son s/daughter s dance school! Who we are: Regardless of whether a student wishes to pursue dance as a career or participate for personal development and enjoyment, we are committed to offering each student an education in dance that is based on the traditions of classical ballet around the world. What makes SGB unique? The School of Greensboro Ballet is the Triad s only not-for-profit classical ballet school. As such, we are not motivated by commercial gain, but rather, by offering the finest in dance education to our students. What will my child learn? Our students are enrolled in classes that are suitable for their individual stage of development. We offer a carefully researched curriculum of study that prepares our students for acceptance at any major ballet school anywhere. While gaining a strong foundation in classical ballet, the students have taught us that they also gain a strong foundation in life skills. Our students take pride in their ever expanding abilities to manage their time well, follow instructions, stay focused, be self-disciplined, prompt, respectful, creative problem solvers, and of course, offer the gift of performance to audiences. Will my child become a ballerina one day? We are very proud to have had former students become professional ballet and contemporary dancers, choreographers, dance teachers, Broadway performers and one of our former students was even recently named Executive Director of the American Ballet Theatre! While we are always pleased to see students go off to enjoy success in the dance world, we are equally as delighted and committed to helping them succeed in other fields. Many of our students have become successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, professors, authors, producers, actors/singers, computer programmers, scientists, mothers and fathers. They often tell us the discipline, organizational and thinking skills they learned at the SGB have helped them succeed... in life. We look forward to working with your child in our school! We know we have the best to offer in dance education here and we are honored that you have chosen the School of Greensboro Ballet. PAGE 2

Children s Dance Program for Ages 3-6 The School of Greensboro Ballet's Children s Dance Program has a well-researched curriculum called Leap N Learn, just for children ages 3-6, and is sensitive to children s physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Leap N Learn was originally developed to help young dancers prepare for formal ballet classes and has now grown into a program that encourages creativity, self-expression and fundamental movement skills. See our website for more on our Children s Dance curriculum. What should my child wear to class? LEOTARDS TIGHTS BALLET SHOES Children s Dance 1 & 2 Capezio Style #132-C, White Pink, Non-Shiny Pink flats* Children s Dance 3 & 4 Capezio Style #132-C, Pink Pink, Non-Shiny Pink flats* BOYS in Children s Dance White, snug-fitting T-Shirt Black Biker Shorts White flats & white socks Note: Only leather shoes will be allowed in class and ballet flats should not be purchased with "room to grow." Ballet shoe drawstrings should be tucked in. BEFORE & AFTER CLASS: Ballet shoes should never been worn outdoors! We require that students wear a cover-up when not in the classroom. Cover-ups consist of a shirt, pants/skirt/dress and street shoes. Remember that the Greensboro Cultural Center is a public facility, and we should all dress appropriately. See PAGE 6 for more information on Where to purchase Dancewear and more! Do I need to put her hair in a bun for class? No. Female students must be well groomed with their hair pulled back from their faces in a pony-tail, pig tails, or braids. Short hair may be managed with a headband or barrettes. Male students should wear their hair in a style that is no longer than collar length. See the following pages for more info on where to park, where to wait for your child during class, and much more! What do I need to know about the Children's Dance Concerts? This year s Children s Dance Concerts will be Saturday, May 12, Children's Dance Concert fees are only $25 for the first child and $10 for each additional child (in the Children s Dance program). This includes your child's costume and FREE admittance for everyone in your family and any other friends or guests. Your child s class dancewear is the base of their costume. Your dancer is only required to be there between hours. This includes prep time, the concert (your child will be on "stage" the entire minutes) and a post celebration. After the concert, stay for a snack and punch mixer and for our Carnival, where the children (dancers and their siblings) can play games and win prizes. Along with some brief class-work demonstrations, your child's class will perform their own "Story Ballet" that they have created together with their instructor. Overall, we offer low-stress, intimate and fun concert experiences that both our students and families truly enjoy and appreciate. PAGE 3

Classical Ballet Program for Ages 7 & Up The School of Greensboro Ballet faculty strongly believes that classical ballet is the foundation of all dance. Greensboro Ballet is proud of its heritage and direct link to the Russian Ballet methodology and is pleased to know that its students are carrying on a tradition of training that makes them able to function at a high level in any ballet school anywhere in the world. The School of Greensboro Ballet is the Triad s only not-for-profit classical ballet school and the only school in the Guilford County area with access to the choreography of the masters, including George Balanchine. We offer our students the opportunity to appear on stage with principal dancers from New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and many more, and to be instructed by guest teachers from those same companies. What other forms of dance to you offer? We also believe that training in other dance disciplines is incredibly beneficial for the complete training of a wellrounded dancer and so we also offer jazz, modern and pointe classes. Our Jazz & Modern classes are also offered to anyone wishing to train only in these disciplines if so desired. When can I take Pointe classes? This is a question we hear a lot from interested dancers and their parents. The short answer is that most of our students start with Pre-Pointe classes at around age 12, assuming they meet certain physical requirements, and only after at least four years of classical ballet training. Students can enroll in Pointe classes only with a teacher s recommendation. Ballet is a challenging and very repetitive form of dance. How do I keep my young dancer from getting bored? From Ballet 1 through a dancer s professional career, he/she will work on the same elements every time they go to class. In today s fast paced society, young students can get bored very easily. Ballet is excellent for teaching them that the best things in life come with careful & disciplined hard work! As a parent, we also suggest you supplement their training by taking them to see professionally produced ballet performances often, for inspiration. Borrow books from the library about Ballet and famous ballerinas. Invite family & their friends to come see their performances, and Parent Observation Weeks, as much as possible. We also encourage our young ballet students to participate in our Fun Weeks, such as Dress Up Week, Bring A Friend Week, and our themed weeks such as Nutcracker Week! What else do I need to know about SGB s Classical Ballet program? Students must be dressed and groomed appropriately for each of their classes. See Dance Wear Requirements on Page 6 for more details. The SGB will offer Hair Days where your ballet student will learn how to put their hair up in a bun correctly. Parents are always invited, too! Elementary Ballet 3 & up students should bring a Ballet Notebook with them to class & purchase a Ballet Dictionary for their training. Your instructor will give you more info on this. It would be highly beneficial for both student and parents to read our Studio Rules before the first day of class. See Page 5 for more information. Your dancer will learn the proper etiquette of a classical ballet classroom including when to arrive, when to wait for admittance into class, how to thank the instructor for the class and how to show respect for your fellow dance student. Ballet students in level Elementary Ballet 2 & up may audition for The Nutcracker. For all the requirements for these Auditions, see Page 9. Be sure to check our Bulletin Boards, located outside the classrooms, for lots of important info. Parents should also read our Newsletters and follow us on Social media for important reminders. Read this Student Handbook, too! PAGE 4

Studio Rules 1. Children s Dance students and Ballet students must be accompanied by an adult when not in class. Do not leave your child unattended in the Greensboro Cultural Center. Greensboro Ballet and the School of Greensboro Ballet cannot assume responsibility for your child outside of the classroom. 2. Parents and siblings may wait for their dancer in the WAITING AREA on the third floor next to the snack machines. Building policy and fire regulations do not permit parents to wait in the corridor outside our studios. If you arrive early to class, please wait in the waiting area until the time of your child s class. 3. Students, parents, and siblings MUST BE QUIET in the hallways. No screaming or loud talking is permitted, and NO RUNNING in the hallways. These actions can be disruptive to classes currently taking place and to the administrative staff working in the offices. 4. Students are expected to be quiet and to behave in a manner conducive to learning when in the classroom. All students in Elementary Ballet 3 & up, and all Jazz, Modern and Pointe students are required to bring a notebook and pencil to class for making notes about corrections, writing down vocabulary words and writing down dances learned. These notebooks are vital to the students progress. Also Elementary Ballet 3 & up are required to have a ballet dictionary which can be purchased at Carolina Dancewear. 5. WE EXPECT OUR STUDENTS TO BE ON TIME FOR CLASS. In the event that a student is late, they should enter the classroom prepared to dance (in dance attire ONLY) and stand in the doorway until the teacher invites them into the classroom. If the student has missed too much of the warm-up process, they will be invited to observe class that day and can make-up the class at another time. Otherwise, the teacher will invite the student to join class at the most appropriate moment. 6. If a student is unable to be dressed or groomed appropriately, for reasons beyond their control, he/she needs to speak to the instructor before class or they may be asked to observe. 7. If a student asks to sit out because of injury/illness, they will not be allowed to participate for the rest of the class. 8. We require that students wear a cover-up when not in their classroom. Cover-ups consist of a shirt, pants, or skirt and street shoes. Remember that the Greensboro Cultural Center is a public facility, and we should all dress appropriately. 9. Ballet shoe drawstrings should be tied in a knot and cut off. The instructor will show the student/parent how to do this. An elastic strap must be securely sewn onto each ballet shoe to keep the shoe on the dancer s foot. Ballet shoes should never be worn outdoors. 10. Climbing or hanging on the ballet barres is prohibited. 11. No phones or any other electronic devices are allowed in the classroom. 12. Food (including candy, gum, snacks) and drinks may not be brought into the classrooms. They may instead be consumed in the waiting area or outside the building. Only water in water bottles is permitted in the classroom. 13. In between classes is NOT an appropriate time to talk to your child s teacher about questions, concerns, or problems. The teachers need that time to either prepare for their next class or take a small break. If a parent wishes to talk to their child s teacher, they should call the school s Registrar who will set up an appointment (by phone or in person) with the teacher for you. 14. If a parent or caregiver needs something delivered or a message passed to a student, please send it through the Registrar so class will not be disrupted. Thank you for your compliance with all of our Studio Rules. PAGE 5

Important Information for Students & Parents Part 2 Student Class Assignments & Promotions - The School of Greensboro Ballet offers classes on a multi-level system with students progressing from one level to the next at their own individual pace. The average stay in any given level is one school year. However, some students, because of physical, intellectual or emotional development, may require a longer or shorter period in any given level. Students are placed in the course of study that best suits their training needs, with age being a secondary consideration. After having consulted with one another, the faculty may determine at any time during the school year that a student may require some adjustment in her/his course work. In this event the parent will be advised of the adjustment and a change of schedule will be implemented if possible. Parent Observation Weeks - We do not allow parents to observe classes on a regular basis, because it distracts the students and we need their focus on their instructor and learning. Parents are invited to and very welcome to observe students in their classes during the following Parent Observation weeks: November 13-November 18, 2017 February 26-March 3, 2018 Waiting Area Parents should drop their student with the instructor at their child s classroom door then proceed to one of the Greensboro Cultural Center s several waiting areas (one is right outside our entrance doors, near the water fountain and snack machines). GCC Building Policy and Fire Regulations do not permit parents/guardians to wait in the corridor outside our studios. Some families enjoy taking walks to the Central Library, LeBauer Park or around the Greensboro Cultural Center while waiting for students. If you arrive early to class, please wait in the Waiting Area until the time of your child s class. Please do not be late to pick up your child. If you are, we will keep your child in the Registrar s office until your arrival. Location Notes We are located on the 3 rd floor of the Greensboro Cultural Center in the heart of downtown Greensboro. Other tenants of the GCC include ArtsGreensboro, Center for Visual Artists, ArtsQuest/Green Hill Center for Art, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, African American Atelier, Eastern Music Festival and so much more! We re surrounded by Center City Park, Central Library of Greensboro, Greensboro Children s Museum & the new LeBauer City Park (see photo). Bathrooms/Dressing Rooms There are both female & male dressing rooms with bathrooms located just outside our main door. We suggest our Children s Dance students use the restrooms right before class so as not to cause an interruption during instruction. Children must be potty trained. Lost & Found - At the end of each day items left in the classrooms are collected and put into the Lost & Found box located in the Registrar s office (first office on the left). If items are lost in the Greensboro Cultural Center, such as in the bathrooms or in the waiting area, check with the GCC office on the 2 nd floor or call In June, all items left in Greensboro Ballet s Lost & Found are donated to charity. Communication We make every effort to communicate to our parents through the following venues: Newsletters, our Website, our Social Media sites, hallway Bulletin boards and thru the Registrar.
