3 Parent/Teacher Conferences October 12 Student Holiday Our teachers are in the process of scheduling Parent Conferences. The majority of the conferences will be held on Monday, October 12, which is a student holiday. It is important for parents to attend conferences so that the school and home can work together in a partnership. There is a strong correlation between parent involvement and student success. We are so fortunate at Millsap to have such wonderful parent support! Chess Club Chess Club will not meet this Wed. due to Book Fair. Our next meeting will be Wed. Oct. 14 th. Parents, please come into the Library to pick up your child. Don t forget to put Money in your Child s Lunch Account at school or online: blic/login.aspx Millsap Night at Gringo s Oct.6 th Go enjoy a meal at Gringo s located on Mueschke Rd. and Millsap will receive a percentage of the total of your meal. The proceeds will help pay for our school s educational tools and materials. Be sure and mention to the cashier that you are from Millsap and they do the rest. 4 Author Susan Crummel is coming to Millsap on Monday, Oct. 19 th and will share her stories and love of reading with our Kindergarten and 1 st grade students. Susan is an award winning author of picture books for children which she co-authors with the illustrator, her sister Janet Stevens. To purchase autographed copies of her books, complete the form coming home with your child and return the payment to the library by Wed. Oct. 14. Quantities are limited and orders will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Teacher Wish Lists Book Fair We will have a Teacher Wish List board on display during the week of our Book Fair. If you would like to purchase a book that your child s teacher has specifically asked for, check out the Wish List board located at the entrance to the Library. You will take a wish list slip, go find the requested book, pay for it and you can deliver it to the teacher whenever you like.. Millsap will again be honoring our Veterans, both in our community and around the world, with our Annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, November 6, The program will include the recognition of our visiting Veterans, a musical program by our Millsap Choir, presentation of flags and other activities that make for a wonderful morning with our Veterans and their guests. Please assist us in our preparations by completing the form found in your child s folder or attachment to this newsletter. All forms must be returned to school by October 16 th. Thank you! Vision & Hearing Screening Oct. 13th and 14th If your child wears glasses, please help them to remember to wear them every day and to have them on these screening days for testing!

5 PTO President s Note: Way to go Mustangs and Parents for participating in our Big Kahuna Fundraiser! It was a great success. Delivery date for orders is Oct. 23. The date for Kona Ice Party will be announced soon. Parents, we are in full swing in the VIPS room. Please consider coming in and giving us a tiny bit of your time to help the teachers with their classroom projects that directly benefit your child. If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact one of the VIPS Officers. We are also available to meet you in the VIPS room and provide you with a tour to explain more about what we do there. Your efforts will really be appreciated! We need a lot of volunteers to make Field day a success! Here are a few opportunities we need help with; prep work before field day, ribbon writers, score keepers, snow cones, and much more. Students who have a temperature at or above 100.0F must be excluded from school until fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever suppressing medication. 2. Students with diarrhea must be excluded from school until diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of a diarrhea suppressing medication. When your student has been home sick, they will be evaluated by the nurse before returning to class. If the above guidelines are not met, the student will be sent home. This is to help stop the spread of illness among our students.

7 R-E-A-D! R-E-A-D! It s time to READ, READ, READ!!! Millsap Elementary 3 rd, 4 th & 5 th Grade students will be participating in the NAME THAT BOOK PROGRAM. The mission of the Name That Book (NTB) Program is to foster a life-long love of reading in all 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th graders. A list of books that encompasses a wide variety of genres has been provided, and students are encouraged to read as many as possible. This program culminates annually with a series of contests to celebrate the students comprehensive knowledge of the books. The 100 books are chosen by CFISD librarians and are available at your library. At the end of October, students will form teams within their grade levels. For the time being, they need to be reading the 100 books on the Name That Book List. You may go to Millsap s Library Home Page and find the list of books under the Name That Book link. HORIZONS Identification Process A Guide for Parent Referrals A parent s first step is to review the information located on the HORIZONS website: An Overview of Program Services brochure Who are the Gifted? brochure Parent Information Should I Refer My Child? pdf file Parents/guardians should discuss appropriateness of referrals with the child s teacher(s) and/or campus counselor. The HORIZONS Open Referral Period begins October 1st and lasts through December 1st. Parents/guardians and teachers can refer students for HORIZONS testing. Parents can obtain the Parent Survey and Permission to Test form from their child s campus of the HORIZONS website. Completed forms must be returned to the campus counselor by December 1, Late forms will NOT be honored.

8 Millsap Elementary Huffmeister Road Cypress, Texas Cy-Fair Independent School District Dear Parent/Guardian: Millsap Elementary School will be conducting spinal screening on 10/13/15 and 10/14/15. The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of Curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person s appearance and health. The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners who have been specially trained will look at your child s back while he/she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, boys and girls will be seen separately and individually. Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child s need for regular health care and checkup. According to state law, all students in grades 5 and 8 must receive the spinal screening. If, for religious reasons, you do not wish to have your child screened, you are to submit an affidavit of religious exemption to this office no later than 10/09/15.
