1 O C T O B E R Campus Recreation & Wellness reccenter.wcu.edu CRW Backs the Cats! Do you remember games like rock, paper, scissors or balloon tag? Or maybe even dodgeball? Well get ready for some fun this month as Campus Rec & Wellness brings you a number of fun activities inside & out! There will also be a variety of club team activities to watch including Rugby and Disc Golf. Not to mention the new Group X schedule starting October 4 th. Not into games? The Mind-Body Experiments series continues this month, October 21 st, with Moving Meditation, a structured walk to help you de-stress and re-connect with yourself. In addition to fun and games this month, CRW is Backing the Cats through participation in Homecoming activities like float building, the parade & campus banners. As a reminder, the CRC will close an hour before all home football games. And don t forget the tailgate! All students are invited to stop by tailgate spots 2 4 to have some food before every football game. Residential Living, the UC and CRW collaborate for a great time before each game so come see us. Join CRW & the WCU Dance Team in a Week of Spirit During Homecoming! CRW & the WCU Dance Team will partake in a series of events during Homecoming 2010 and we encourage everyone to get involved in the spirit. CRW staff (students and professionals) will be involved in the banner contest, float-building, day of service, and the homecoming parade. In addition, the Intramural Sports program will host several events during float-building to help student groups earn points toward the Catamount Cup and the WCU Dance Team will be involved with Spirit Night and the Homecoming Football Game. Group exercise Disc Golf Tournament Champions (L-R) 2nd Place Male - Nathan Tomlinson 1st Place Female - Rebecca Oates 1st Place Male - Cameron Lisk Sand Volleyball Men s Champions Kappa Sigma Disc Golf Club hosting a WCU Tournament Friday, October 1st The WCU Disc Golf Club is hosting a Disc Golf Tournament for all WCU students, faculty, and staff on Friday, October 1st at 4:00pm. The tournament is free and no preregistration is required. Interested participants just need to show up to Hole 1 (on the Band Practice Field) with their CatCard by 3:45pm. The club is hosting the tournament in an effort to continue to advance their mission of nurturing the sport and community of disc golf. The tournament will include prizes for the top 5 men s finishers and the top 3 women s finishers. This month, you may notice some changes to the Group X schedule, but don t fear...all of your favorites are still offered with the return of some of the Spring hits! Brandon is back, and he s brought Zumba back with him on Tuesday nights following his Power Pump class! Also, Bosu Bootcamp has moved up a timeslot, ensuring students and faculty have the opportunity to work on balance and full body strength and cardio before nightfall. Finally, Jena will be blasting Butts & Guts Tuesday afternoons while Rob takes over H.E.A.T. on Thursday nights. With a few other changes, we are sure every participant will be able to find the Group X classes that fit their goals and schedule! Changes will officially take place starting October 4th. The Ol Boys upset the Western Carolina Men s Rugby Football Club The Men s Rugby Football Club hosted their Alumni, known as the Ol Boys, on Friday, September 10th. Although the current WCU team didn t fair well against the Ol Boys, the match definitely showed their enthusiasm to start the season. The match also attracted several spectators with approximately 50 people at any given time. The final score was Alumni 49 WCU 25. Men s Rugby Football Club hosts Lander University Sunday, October 10th The Western Carolina Men s Rugby Football Club will host Lander University on Sunday, October 10th. The match-up will be the club s first collegiate home match of the season. Come see the sport of Rugby in action to finish up your Homecoming Week! 2

The following dates/times are the closures during October: Saturday, October 9th (Homecoming) CRC Closes at 2:00pm Saturday, October 23rd (App State) CRC Closes at 2:00pm Table Tennis Champion Andy Hall Healthy Fettuccine Alfredo Contributed by CRC Member Terry Rikard 1 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp olive oil 2 to 3 heaping tsp low sodium white miso paste ½ cup plain soymilk ½ cup fat free half & half 1 heaping tsp Smart Balance butter 1 tsp cornstarch 3 Toast garlic in olive oil over medium heat. Stir in remaining ingredients. Make sure cornstarch is completely dissolved in the liquid mixture. Bring to a light boil stirring frequently with a whisk for one minute after the boil begins. Toss with your favorite cooked pasta and enjoy!

The National College Health Assessment is a survey that gives our campus baseline student behavioral data that will help us better understand the student body and help measure our progress with the national Healthy Campus 2020 objectives. To attain this, however, we need students to take the survey! Each non-distance student received an with a link to the survey. If it was deleted or missed another will be sent to their catamount shortly. Please help us learn more about our campus by either taking the survey or encouraging your students to TELL US HOW THEY ROLL IN 2010!!! Do you need to become CPR certified? 6 RECCENTER.WCU.EDU Member of the Month Dave Osborne is originally from the suburbs of Washington D.C. and came to WCU in January of He is a campus minister with Reformed University Fellowship and began exercising regularly mid-july 2010 after a ten-year sabbatical. Dave says he has a love/hate relationship with the elliptical machines and usually works out in the early afternoon. If you happen to see him around the CRC be sure to congratulate him! Employee of the Month Jena Weinstock, from Charlotte, North Carolina, is one of our Group exercise instructors and on our Marketing Team. She is majoring in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Sales Marketing. Jena s favorite workouts are the Group X classes and anything outdoors with her pup, especially long morning walks so she can enjoy the crisp mountain air. She has been exercising regularly for as long as she can remember and enjoys working for Campus Rec & Wellness because the CRC helped her find her Lift as a freshman and the desire to help others find their Lift too!
