Its distinctive features include the captivating rhythms of footwork and handclaps, body carriage and arms. The dance is earthly, highly expressive and drawn from the individual s response to flamenco song and music, as well as from one s life experiences. It is no wonder that flamenco has such a diverse range of styles to channel the intensity of human emotions, be it joy, anger, sadness and solitude, sensuality and love. Please come in comfortable attire and round-toe sturdy shoes. Ladies can wear a flare skirt. Conducted by the Rose Borromeo Spanish Dance Company Street Dance Conducted by Jazz Inc 21 Jul 2018, Sat, 12pm (1hr) Learn street dance styles from the century, such as the charleston, lindy hop and hip hop, and see how they are all connected! About Jazz Inc Jazz Inc is a collective of dancers led and founded by Sinclair Ang. While specialising in authentic street dances from the 1920s 40s, like the charleston and the lindy hop, the collective also seeks to promote contemporary urban street dances, with a focus on tracing the roots and development of street dance and finding their common ground and influences, as well as to break barriers between the different subgenres of the dance and their respective music. They also aim to be inclusive rather than divisive, and to celebrate vernacular dance in all its forms and its organic nature that ties it closely to the everyday struggles, pains, joys and victories. About Danz People Danz People makes dance accessible to young people and adults through dance training, arts education and community outreach programmes. Its curriculum includes hip hop, jazz and contemporary, catering to children and adults, and seasoned and novice dancers, with courses for beginners as well. A recital is staged annually to allow all students the experience of performing in a theatre setting. The studio also collaborates with National Arts Council in offering arts education programmes for educational institutes. These programmes include lectures and demonstrations, as well as dance workshops and choreography. Broadway Jazz Conducted by L.A. Dance Connection 11 Aug 2018, Sat, 12pm (1hr) Broadway jazz refers to a dance genre inspired by musicals such as West Side Story, Chicago, Grease, Hairspray, Newsies, Hamilton, and more. Dance Connection (LADC) is a local dance company offering classes in hip hop, jazz, salsa and dance fitness. Founded in 2003, LADC s mission is to share the passion for dance and to promote healthy living. LADC also offers dance and dance fitness workshops in Los Angeles, India and Indonesia. It focuses on dance creativity and proper techniques in an environment that provides work-life balance, health and fitness awareness, confidence and self-esteem. Bhangra Conducted by SherePunjab Bhangra 2 Sep 2018, Sun, 12pm (1hr) Bhangra is a traditional high-energy folk dance and a genre of music that originated in the northern state of Punjab, India. It was first performed during the month of Vesakhi, when Punjabi farmers would harvest their crops and celebrate the coming of spring. A bhangra performance is typically six to eight minutes long, consisting of a variation of dance styles including bedi, dhamaal, jhummar, mirza, jugni/chaal and prop segments such as saaps and khundey, to name a few. Decades ago, bhangra music was performed live, using instruments such as the dhol, chimta and algoze. With its growing popularity, bhangra transformed to include hip hop beats and other forms of western rhythms.
