1 Irish Times Issue 8 Volume 4 March 28, 2018 Spring Break St. Joseph Catholic School spring break started March 9, 2018 and ended March 18, Many of our students spent the break sleeping, shopping for prom dresses, relaxing on the beach, and surprisingly, one student was forced to get her wisdom tooth pulled. Ashley Clark states that she enjoyed catching up on her rest and spending time with family and friends. Diamond Winners and Aja Hudson were overly excited about finding the prom dress of their choice. Gracie McGaugh and Anya Kellum spent their break traveling and making memories. Gracie traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana and visited the State Park! Anya traveled to Atlanta, Georgia and had an amazing time riding thrilling rides at Six Flags. Jasmine Evans was informed at the beginning of spring break that she had to get her wisdom tooth pulled. However, she did not let this stop her from enjoying her break the best way she could. Many students enjoyed their spring break and dreaded coming back to school! St. Patrick s Day St. Patrick s Day is a Christian and cultural holiday celebrated on March 17, the death date of Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland. It was named an official feast day in the 17th century. The holiday commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. The celebrations usually involve parades and festivals, along with wearing the color of green and shamrocks. Historically, the celebration also involves the lifting of the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking for the day, which has encouraged the holiday s tradition of consumption of alcohol. The holiday has been criticized for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish people and for becoming too commercialized as the more modern celebrations are greatly influenced by North America, that being said Saint Patrick s Day continues to be the most widely celebrated national holiday in history. 2 Dr. Seuss Day On March 2nd 1904, Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss was born on this day. On this day, every year, children across the nation celebrated Read Across America Day. On Dr. Seuss Day it is customary to read a favorite book with your child. This day is meant to engage children to read and start reading more of the. Dr. Seuss wrote the books such as; I Ran the Zoo, Horton Hears a Who, If I Ran the Circus, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Green Eggs and Ham. Friday, March 2nd, OLOL students dressed up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. -Aja Hudson Serving it Up Tennis is off to a great start this year. The team had their first match in Leland, MS against Deer Creek. The tennis team consists of 20 people which are as following: Sarah Hayek, Olivia Deangelo, Carsen Mansour, Sarah Tonos, Chris Adams, Brice Johnson, Madison Knight, Cecilia Azar, Michael Mansour, Brittain Virden, Mary Michael Mahalic, Lindsey Lunn, Frank Joseph Serio, Christopher Tonos, Allie Moss, Caroline Meyer, Catherine Meyer, Clayton Hensley, Meera Patel, and Thomas Jones.They won 7 to 2 and everyone won their matches except for the boys doubles. Olivia Deangelo won the girls #1 singles 6-4 and 6-4. Sarah Tonos won girls #2 singles 6-2 and 6-2. Carsen and Mary Michael won #1 girls doubles 6-0 and 6-0. Lindsay and Madison Knight won #2 girls double 6-0 and 6-0. Chris Adams won boys #1 singles 6-0 and 6-0. Brice won #2 boys singles 6-0 and 6-0. Cecilia and Frank Joseph won 6-2 and 6-0 in mixed doubles. I would say that the Fighting Irish Tennis team is starting this season off with a bang. 3 Parent of the Month Mrs. Elizabeth Jones Her daughter Rebecca Jones would like to share some facts about her mom, and how she adores her. What was your mom like in high school? She says she was very quiet in high school. How does your mom make you feel? In what ways has she inspired you? My mom makes me feel like I can do anything I set my mind to. She inspires me to always try my best no matter what. She also inspires me to always be willing to help those in need, and help out in my community. Mrs. Jones is the mother of Rebecca and Thomas Jones who both attend St. Joe. She attended T.L. Weston high school where she was a member of the band and played the flute. She also graduated from Delta State University with a B.S. in Chemistry. She is the youngest of 9 with 5 brothers and 3 sisters. My Children inspire me daily, as they try new things. They don't give up and they keep working. - Mrs. Jones Why did you choose St. Joe? My daughter s friend was going to Lourdes. We visited Lourdes before Rebecca started first grade. Sister Marie gave us a tour and we fell in love with the school. I love the Christian values and academic environment. What is your mom s personality like? I would describe my mom's personality as sweet yet fiery. She is always there for us when we need her, but she isn't afraid to tell us when we re doing something wrong. What are some qualities you like about your mother? My favorite thing about my mom is that she always makes me feel like I can talk to her about anything. What s the best advice your mom has ever given you? The best advice my mom has given me is to always be confident in myself and to do what makes me happy. Article by Kiya Thomas

4 Teacher of the Month In honor of Teacher of the Month for March, Coach Bley has been selected. I ve known Coach Bley since the 8th grade. He has been my favorite teacher ever since then. Coach Bley was born on February 26, 1958 in Alabama. However, New Orleans, LA is his home. Coach Bley has been teaching for 29 years. When his wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness he was inspired to be a teacher because he really needed a job. Coach Bley has multiple careers like: NOPD, tour bus driver, college seminary, pastor, and a teacher aid coach. Coach Bley said he sees himself 5 years from now teaching and coaching at St.Joe and winning at least 3 more State Championships in football and basketball. He said he always knew this is what God called him to do. -Diamond Winners Batter Up The Fighting Irish baseball team played Bayou Academy Colts on March 20. With a single hit by Brice Johnson, the fighting Irish lost The JV team faired a little better with a loss of In the Varsity game Edward Rice got hit with the ball, which advanced him to first base. The fighting Irish will face Bayou Colts again on Thursday, March 22, The Fighting Irish have been working very hard on the field. The Irish will have a better chance of winning since they are at home and now have a few games under their belt. The Irish have only played two games and they are just getting back into the groove of things. The coaches have been working vigorously with the players so they can help them to develop into the ball players that they see in each of them. The boys have learned a lot from their mistakes and plan on making improvements in their upcoming games. Come out and support your boys!! -Jordan Scott

5 We re going on a hunt for the most EGG - cellent door. Decorating a door for each class is a tradition at Saint Joe. Each class gets to decorate a door, show their artistic abilities, and bond together. Decorating the door isn t just putting eggs and baskets on the doors. They also include symbols and sayings that mention the resurrection of Jesus. Easter is a time for kids to receive their baskets and have Easter egg hunts, but most importantly it is about Jesus laying his life down for the world. His resurrection symbolizes eternal life. Easter is a celebration of Jesus Christ s victory over death. -Jasmine Evans

6 9th Grade Grad 2018 This year s 9th Grade Grad was definitely one for the books! The schools that were there included St. Joseph Catholic School, Deer Creek, Washington School, and Greenville Christian! All of the girls dresses were beautiful and the young men looked very handsome! There was a presentation where the ninth grade girls and their escorts walked to the stage and down the aisle. It lasted about thirty minutes. The dance followed right after that. It started around 9:00 and ended around 11:30. There was a great DJ and they all danced the night away! -Gracie McGaugh
