Press Release 6/26/ DIXIE BOYS BASEBALL FUTURE STARS EVENT The 2012 Dixie Boys Future Stars Event showcased the talents of 14 year-old Dixie Boys participants. The wooden bat tournament was held the weekend of June 8-10, 2012 in Dothan, Al. Four teams participated in the event. Dothan has hosted this event since it was started. The two day event was slated to be two days of round robin format. As a result of heavy rains, play for Sunday was forced to be cancelled around noon. The Dixie Stars team emerged from Saturday play with a perfect 2-0 record while the Troy Stars and the Dothan Stars had one win each to go along with a single loss. The Dixie Stars had a 4-2 victory over the Freeport Stars in the opening game of the tournament and later captured a 17-7 win over the Troy Stars. In other action, the Troy Stars had eleven hits in their 17-7 win over Dothan. The Dothan Stars played their best game of the tournament in a 4-1 victory over the team from Freeport, Florida. The Freeport Stars were very competitive in their two losses holding opponents to only 4 runs in each game while collecting a total of eleven hits. In their two losses, the Freeport team actually outhit their opponents. Sunday play had started with the Dixie Stars taken a 3-1 lead into the top of the fourth when rain halted all play. Team photos along with the tournament rosters appear in this article. Players arrived Friday afternoon for check-in. All of the uniform tops for the event were donated by Pennant Sports of Birmingham, Alabama. Old Hickory Bats provided the teams with wooden bats for the tournament. Each team was allotted a short practice period. Following the practice session all players were treated to a meal and social time courtesy of the City of Dothan Department of Leisure Services. The Opening Ceremony was held in conjunction with the social event in the Westgate Recreation Center. The participating tournament teams were recognized. Tony Black served as the Master of Ceremonies and recognized local dignitaries and Dixie officials in attendance. J. Sandy Jones, Commissioner/CEO Dixie Boys Baseball stated, We enjoy working with the City of Dothan Department of Leisure Services. It was unfortunate that the rains cancelled play; however we were pleased with the caliber of play witnessed during the event. It is our hope that the event can be expanded to include more teams and represent a bigger draw of visitors to the Dothan area. Any time that youth are given the opportunity to play baseball the effort is worthwhile. The professional staff of Dothan Leisure Services worked hard to make the event enjoyable and rewarding.
