FOOT DRILL INSTRUCTION 1. INTRODUCTION The Need for Drill: 1. Enable a commander to move a unit from place to place in an orderly fashion. 2. Instill discipline in troops. 3. Provide for development of all soldiers in the practice of commanding troops. 4. Provide a means of developing teamwork; and present military parades. Qualities of an Instructor: 1. Patience Never lose your temper. 2. Enthusiasm To instill in your squad the will to learn. 3. Consistency Set a standard and do not deviate from it 4. Humanity Understand the squad s problems. Never humiliate individual members of the squad. 5. Personality Impress your personality upon the squad and always control them fully. Leading By Example: 1. Bearing is of utmost importance. 2. When drilling a squad, stand at attention. 3. Do not exaggerate a movement in drill. 4. Do not use bad language. 5. When demonstrating, do so accurately.

2. THE WORDS OF COMMAND Words of Command: 1. Introductory: This tells the squad the movement they are about to carry out. E.g. Bergerak ka- kanan bertiga- tiga.. (Move to the right in threes) 2. Cautionary : The drawn- out and loud reminder to the squad. E.g. Ka- kanan Pu.. (Right) 3. Executive : The sharp, loud command. E.g. Sing! (Turn) Timing of Words of Command: The cautionary word of commands should be consistently drawn out over about the equivalent of four paces in quick time. There should be a pause between it and the executive words of command of: 1. At the halt : The regular pause 2. In quick march : About 4 paces 3. In slow march : About three paces Time and Pace: Every instructor should know the rates of marching, length of pace and timing of foot drill. They are as follows: 1. Rates of marching a. Quick march (normal) :126 paces per min b. Quick march (recruits) : Up to 140 paces per min c. Slow time (normal) : 65 paces per min d. Double time : 180 paces per min 2. Length of pace a. Quick and slow time : 27 inches (68 cm) b. Stepping out : 30 inches (75 cm) c. Stepping short : 21 inches (53 cm) d. Double time : 40 inches (101 cm) e. Side pace : 12 inches (30 cm)

f. Half pace : 15 inches (37 cm) - Quick time for recruits is to encourage as a warming to alertness and agility. Development of the Words of Commands: Instructors should be taught how to control a squad by the following 2 methods: 1. Communication Drill a. First demonstrate to the squad all words of commands at the halt. b. Now conduct the squad while they give elementary words of commands, insisting on clarity and power from each man. c. Divide the squad into 2 ranks, place them 30 metres apart, with 5 paces interval between each man. d. Each man should now still his opposite member 30 metres away without regards to the man to the left and right of him. e. After not more then ten minutes, change the ranks so that the men in both ranks have a chance of controlling their opposite members. 2. Mutual Drill a. Form the squad into 3 ranks and explain the introductory words of commands and the directing flanks. b. Call out each members of the squad in turn to drill the squad and call out other members of the squad to watch and be prepared to comment on his performance. - Be patient and encouraging - When correcting, address the mistake to the whole squad, so that they can learn from one another s mistakes.

3. THE SEQUENCE OF INSTRUCTION When teaching a new drill, use the following sequence: 1. Formation of squad 2. Explanation 3. Demonstration 4. Question 5. Practice Formation of squad: Bear 2 factors in mind: 1. The comfort of the squad e.g. make sure they are not facing the sun 2. The formation in which they will learn the most quickly. For example: a. Straight line b. Semicircle c. Three ranks, open order, incline Explanation: Explain what you are about to teach and why it is necessary 1. Subject 2. Aim 3. Words of commands. Demonstration: Break this down into the following: 1. Complete demonstration, shouting out the words of command. 2. Demonstration by numbers (step by step), pointing out important details. e.g. For Sedia (attention), ONE would be raising the left leg at a 90 degrees angle and moving the arms to the side of the body. At TWO, cadets will drive their feet into the ground sharply. 3. Another complete demonstration.

Questions: After giving the demonstration, ask the squad if they have any questions. Do so also after each successive demonstration by numbers. Ensure that the squad is standing easy when asking them questions. Practice: After each demonstration by numbers, practice the squad in that movement and checking faults. Finally, after demonstrating the whole movement, practice the squad by judging the timing. 4. POSTURE Good posture is very important when doing drills, as it makes the cadets executing the drill look smart, and thus this will cause the drill to be performed well. Goof posture is also a sign of discipline, as cadets would have to constantly take note of their posture, which is not very comfortable or east. Here are some of the basic postures to be taken note of when doing foot drill: 1. Shoulders to be pulled back and lowered. 2. Elbows to be locked and straightened. 3. Back to be straightened i.e. No slouching 4. Knees to be straight and no standing on one leg. 5. Stomach to be pulled in 6. Chin to be lifted up and eyes should always look to the front. 7. Hands to be kept tight at the sides unless executing marching drills. 5. SALUTE 1. Salute to the front at e halt: a. Raise the arm sideways until it is horizontal, palm down, fingers extended, thumb close to the forefinger. b. Keeping the upper arm still and the hand and wrist straight, bend the elbow until the forefinger tip is one inch above the right eye. c. Return to the first position of attention by cutting the right hand down the shortest way to the side. The fingers are curled on the way down.

2. When seated and wearing a headdress: a. A cadet, if sitting when at officer approaches, will stand to attention facing the officer and salute the officer. b. If 2 or more men are sitting or standing about, the senior one of the oldest one will face the officer, call the whole to attention and alone will salute. 3. When addressing or delivering a message to and officer: a. A cadet will march smartly to the officer in quick time, halt 2 paces from him, salute, deliver the message, salute again, left/right turn and march off in quick time. b. Cadets are not to do a 180 degree turn when facing an officer. 4. When passing an officer and wearing head dress. a. When a cadet passes an officer, he will salute on the thirds pace before reaching the officer and lower the hand on the third pace after passing him. b. When 2 or more cadets are marching together in line, all will salute. The most senior will give the command up. 6. Introduction Words of Command Before a squad is turned in any direction, the instructor indicates that direction by words of command. The two diagram below shows how this is done. Fig. 1 Squad will move to the Left in threes Squad will Advance Squad facing in any of this direction X Squad will move to the Right in threes Squad will Retire

Since it would be impractical to give command Move to the right in threes, left turn the following introductory word of command are use when the squad is retiring. Fig. 2 Squad will move to the Right Squad will Advance Squad facing this direction X Squad will move to the Left Squad will Retire Note: Words of Command Malay equivalents Squad will retire Squad will advance Move to the right / left in three Move to the right / left - Akan Menghadap Ka- Belakang - Akan Menghadap Ka- Hadapan - Bergerak Ka- Kanan / Ka- kiri Bertiga- Tiga - Akan Bergerak Ka- Kanan / Ka- Kiri X- represent the right marker
