1 BRADD Citizens Corps Council Newsletter Volume VII, Issue II May 5, 2017 Citizen Corps Contact information: General information or to contribute content call: Tony Richey, Ext. 195 Mailing Address: PO Box 1157 Bowling Green, KY In this issue: 2017 First Annual BRADD Citizen Corps Games First Annual BRADD Citizens Corps Games Submitted by Brett Lowe On Saturday March 18 th, 2017 we held our first annual Citizen Corps Games with participants from Simpson, Hart, Barren, and Warren Counties who worked together as one team of 9 members on a disaster drill including internal/external search, cribbing, and medical triage. The team was supported by 5 instructors from Hart, Barren, and Franklin- Simpson County Emergency Management and Barren River District Health Department, as well as 7 members of the Civil Air Patrol who served as victims in various levels of distress. After the drill we were excited to have a wonderful lunch of shredded pork and smoked chicken along with wonderful side dishes. We want to say a special thank you to John DeMarches for providing and smoking the meat!! Following lunch we had a good after action report with what went well and what we can work on. The team worked well together and we look forward to having a bigger and better Citizen Corps Games in 2018!

2 BRADD Citizen Corps Newsletter Page 2 Citizen Corps Program Updates for the First Quarter of 2017 (January March) Barren County During Barren County s monthly meeting February 9, Monica Lea with Red Cross explaining the VOAD/COAD groups and how our CERT/MRC teams can help out. Hart County The Hart County MRC members have an ongoing blood pressure screening monthly at the Hart County Senior Center in Munfordville, KY as part of the KY Care Collaborative. Warren County Warren County Recruitment team met January 19, 2017 at Panera Bread to talk about revitalizing the Warren County Program. Team met again on February 16, 2017 to learn more about MAPP your neighborhood. BRADD MRC The unit participated in a Statewide K HELPS drill on March 15, Region Wide The new Citizen Corps Program Coordinator will start May 8. Welcome Tony Richey! The BRADD Citizen Corps hosted the first Citizens Corps Games on March 18, There were 10 CERT/MRC members who took part. This was an excellent chance to work with other teams in a disaster situation; we had great participation and looking forward to doing this again. There were 17 event staff there for a total of 138 volunteer hours. Simpson County At the Simpson County CERT meetings, they discussed EOC Activation, Weather Spotters and also CERT Team members still needing MRC Training. Simpson County Health Fair. Four (4) CERT team volunteers worked this event to pass out literature on CERT and disaster preparedness. Simpson County Emergency Management Activated CERT members to set up the Emergency Operation Center on 02/24/17 and 02/28/17.

3 BRADD Citizen Corps Newsletter Page 3 OPTIMIZING YOUR CERT BACKPACK Submitted by: Adam Wilshire, Simpson County CERT You ve spent 25 hours working to learn to help your family and neighbors during an emergency. Now you have a wonderful CERT backpack full of useful items, but during an emergency do you know where to quickly locate items in your backpack? Probably not. So, let s get your backpack organized before you need it. Let s start by dumping out your new CERT Pack on the floor to do some organizing. You won't have time to organize during an emergency, plus, you will look unprofessional trying to do it while people are waiting for you. FIRST AID BAG (Orange Camp Bag*) Sort your First Aid Supplies into zip bags Get zip STORAGE or FREEZER bags (they are thicker) with sliders (without can be difficult to open especially with cold or wet hands) Adhesive Bandages all sizes in zip bag Absorbent Bandages all sizes in zip bag Miscellaneous, Alcohol Wipes, Bandage Scissors*, Emergency Blanket (leave wrapped until you need it) Simplify! you don't want to deal with a bag inside a bag inside a bag... Items with * are extra items used that are not in your original kit. TOOLS BAG (Green Camp Bag*) 4-in-1 Emergency Tool Adjustable Wrench Multi-Tool in belt pouch Duct Tape (get new big roll* and replace annually. They get gooey in time & heat. Keep it in its own zip bag.) Crank Flashlight* (never needs batteries) Light Stick(s) 6-in-1 Screwdriver* Disposable Lighter* (you might need to start a campfire) Heavy-duty 55gallon Contractor's Garbage Bag* (many uses including shelter and poncho) HARDHAT PACK Prepare your hardhat by installing and adjusting the suspension unit (inside straps) the install and adjust the chin strap. Use permanent felt marker to print your first initial and last name on the back of the helmet using at least 1" letters. Then Pack the following IN the hardhat... Safety Vest (put it on and adjust it for a good fit, then remove, fold, and stash it in your helmet.) Goggles or Safety Glasses (in zip bag so they stay clean and un-scratched) Work Gloves (on top of stack to protect the goggles) Now put the TOOLS Green bag into your CERT pack first, up one side. Then put the FIRST AID Orange bag up the other side. Then the HARDHAT PACK on top of everything and zip that compartment shut.

BIG TOP-OUTSIDE "OFFICE" POCKET ON PACK Steno Notebook* All Weather Notepad* Mechanical Pencils* Lumber Crayon (Orange or Red to show up on various colors of house siding)) Permanent felt markers (black and red)* Personal Phone Book* Extra Quart and Gallon Zip Bags* LITTLE TOP-OUTSIDE BACK POCKET ON PACK CERT or MRC Lanyard w/id Badge (1 badge on lanyard for around your neck plus 1 badge on your pack) Whistle (put it on your lanyard with your ID badge) Compass* (could also be attached to lanyard) Emergency Poncho (leave wrapped until you need it) RIGHT SIDE MESH POUCH ON PACK Bottle of drinking water* BOTTOM OUTSIDE BACK POCKET ON PACK N95 Respirators (Dust Mask) (You should have 2 or 3... they do get nasty) "Rubber or Medical Gloves put a dozen pairs in a zip bag Extra Zip bags for waste* Hand Sanitizer* LEFT SIDE POCKET ON PACK Personal needs ie: spare glasses, medications* Pocket Notebook* Mechanical Pencil* Miniature LED Headlight* Energy Bars* Kleenex Pocket Packs* (compact and can be used as toilet paper) Container of quarters for phone or vending machines or Laundromat* (11dram pill bottle holds $9.50) Your backpack is now ready in case of an emergency. Help us welcome Tony Richey as the new Citizen Corps Program Coordinator at Barren River District Health Department. Tony had over 30 years experience in Emergency Response and he was Emergency Manager in Barren County for 12 years. He was a big support of CER and MRC in his position. He was instrumental in getting them involved in the Highland Games and other activities at the Barren River State Park.
