1 the O C T O B E R / N O V E M B E R PRC Newsletter WILD, WILD WEST Hi All! Well, how s about that crazy weather we ve been having lately? Torrential rain, crazy winds, not to mention the fires! Sending out this October/November Newsletter, I am very much hoping that all our club members, their families and friends are safe and well. It s been a massive year, with some fabulous things happening in club life and as Christmas fast approaches bringing some (hopefully) much needed time off for many, it is a great time to think about getting right into the rowing scene. With an Elite Junior racing squad, a Junior Rowing squad and a new Masters training program on the way, there is certainly something for everybody. Even if you re not a rower, there are always ways you can contribute to club life we always welcome any helping hands! HAPPY ROWING! Lizzie B Newsletter Editor efbarrett@gmail.com BOAT RESTORATION If you look around the clubhouse you will notice that there are some very new looking boats. We recently received back from Sykes two doubles and a single. They are both boats from St. Paul's Grammar and one was our long suffering Laura's boat. Now that they are back and looking like brand new, please be careful around them and take the utmost care. They are being expertly re rigged and set at correct heights and spans and pitches so they can work at their optimum. Our head coach has designated them to the Junior Elite Squad as racing vessels and will not be used for Learn to Row or visiting Schools to row. LOCAL REGATTA CALENDAR DATE WHERE? 2 LOOK WHO S STARRING IN CATS! NEW ROWING NSW BOARD MEMBER The end of October saw our very own Fiona Toose elected to the Board of Rowing NSW! She had the following message for PRC I thank the Club for nominating me and also Sydney Rowing Club for nominating me. You need two clubs to nominate a board candidate. Fiona and Ian both attended the RNSW AGM and are happy to report that the sandwiches were excellent. OUR LTR PROGRAM ROCKS! PRC is currently in the middle of our last Learn To Row for the year. Big thanks to Fiona for being the Hostess with the Mostest for this course. This course is a big one, but essential, as these courses bring in revenue to help us pay for things such as boat repairs, club fees, shed rental etc. Fiona has had some wonderful feedback from Kings young Ben Hole, who she taught a couple of years ago has just made it to the Year 10 First Four and First Eight for Kings. The rowing master at Kings said to her that Ben came to them from our Learn to Row absolutely technically perfect on the erg and on the water. Since then Ben has rowed with both Kings and Penrith. Just a fab person and fab rower. She couldn't be prouder of him. 2

3 GRUMPY VICE CAPTAINS CORNER Please, please remember tie boats down outside! This time of year sees very heavy winds often in the area and boats flying around are not good for anyone. A reminder about the standard stuff: Toilet rolls. If you use the last sheet put it in the bin and get a new roll on the holder. Kitchen. Tidy up after yourself. I m not your fairy godmother (despite the fact that you think I may look good with a pair of wings) Don t hang wet towels on boats. Just don t hang towels on boats full stop. They damage the paint. IAN Welcome to MacArthur Anglican College We would like to welcome some new rowers under the roof of the Penrith Schools Rowing shed. MacArthur Anglican College have moved from SIRC to Penrith and are running their rowing programme from Penrith Rowing Club. Their Head Coach, Stuart Hughes is putting a lot of effort to get his programme running properly with the help of some volunteers from the committee and some outside coaches. We will hopefully find some more room at the shed to accommodate his oars and boats when they arrive from refurbishment towards the end of the season. Stuart has already enrolled two of his rowers to Penrith Rowing Club and one, James Hardy. has joined the Elite Development Squad as an U/19 rower. Hopefully we can continue a fruitful partnership into the future. 3

4 If you volunteer, or interact with children at our club then this is IMPORTANT information for you! The Working With Children Check is a prerequisite for paid and unpaid child-related work. To find out details on how you have this check completed, please visit: There is no obligation until 1 April 2015 but it would be best for those who need it do it now. It is a free check for volunteers. Fiona has set up a folder, kept in the shed, with printed information showing exactly what to do at the online site. In amazing news, Kate and Jeremy won silver in LTA mixed Double at the World Championships. They then backed it up with a silver in mixed LTA coxed four in Boston!! 4

5 REGATTA NEWS By Terry Congrats to Sue Field and Judy Mann who recently travelled to Ballarat for the World Masters titles. I am reliably informed that they behaved suitably and proudly represented Penrith in their chosen events and as composite crews with Canberra ladies. Hopefully a few more can join you both in the very near future. On the local front since the successful Nepean regatta, there has been some excitement around our rowers. Paul and Rosemary continue to excel in their respective Para-Rowing events. They are both time trialing for NSWIS as we go to press. Their coaches believe that political moves aside one or both should represent this season and into the future. You go guys! As Rosemary is so fond of telling us, you are an inspiration. The juniors have competed at the recent NSWIS Time trials and again are showing their training and commitment is paying dividends. Most have another season or two before representative honours beckon but they are proving their metal now. At the recent Loretto regatta's some great performances were put in. Both crew events and single events went very well. The Saturday afternoon events had to be cancelled due to some extreme 50 and 60 Kilometre per hour winds whipping up the course. However the morning session saw Alyssa and Charlotte finish a very close second in the Year 8 Schoolgirl event. First race and first hit out for both of them. All class girls. The Sunday was a full day of single scull racing with all competitors taking placing s in the top 5 or 6. Maral Manookian took home our only Gold for the day in the Year 9 Schoolgirl single scull event. Her time would have finished her towards the front of most of the year 10's. A machine in the making. All of the girls represented the club in a very professional and sportsmanlike manner that is noticed by others at these Regatta's. Well-done crew! It s the boys turn next at the ISRA regatta on November 23. The girls will be competing too so you have a lot of work to do to keep up with them. Good Luck to all. Junior Squad News With the Junior Squad starting to expand, a decision has been made among the coaches. The development squad that is now racing for the club and their schools this season will be now known as the Elite Development Squad. This name shows the efforts that these rowers put in to the sport and the club to be starting to move in higher racing circles than previously. A Junior Development squad is now being run by Lee Wright and comprises those junior rowers who do not wish to commit as yet to a full training regime or are still learning how to row and wish to learn more. This can then guarantee a pathway for our juniors as they progress from Learn to Row courses and gives them an opportunity to move further on if they wish. If you know of any Juniors between the ages of 12 and 16 who have completed Learn to Row and want to come back and enjoy rowing some more please pass on Chad s or Lee s details. 5
