FHS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TRYOUT GUIDELINES 2018 Tryout Pre-requisites Athlete must be eligible with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher from their previous, second semester report card. Athlete must have completed and submitted an athletic packet to the athletic office prior to tryouts. Packets will also be accepted the day the athlete shows up to tryouts. No Athlete may participate in tryouts without a completed physical packet. All packets are now completed through Register My Athlete. Athletes must be registered and cleared through Register My Athlete prior to tryouts. If selected for a team, there is a Spirit Pack that must be purchased by all athletes. The cost of the Spirit Pack for all athletes is Payment is due no later than August 17 th, 2018 and must be paid in cash to the banking office. All athletes will be required to purchase solid black active ankles, solid black practice spandex, volleyball specific court shoes and solid black knee pads. You will not need to purchase these items each year unless they are found to be in poor condition. o If money will be the determining factor in whether you try out for our program or not, please contact Coach Ortiz at ortizkn@nv.ccsd.net to discuss the issue. Tryout Dates Tryouts for all eligible athletes will take place on Saturday, August 11 th and August 13 th (if needed). Sign-In and Registration will be open at 8:00am on Saturday, August 11 th. The tryout on Saturday will consist of three required sessions. o Session I: Athletic Testing o Session II: Fundamental Intermediate Skills Assessment o Session III: Advanced Skills Assessment Athletes should bring plenty of water, light snack and lunch. It is recommended that athletes do not leave campus during the breaks as we may choose to start the next session early. It is also recommended to bring track shoes for the running portion of the tryout and court shoes for the indoor portion. Cuts may take place at any point throughout the sessions but will generally take place as follows: First cuts will take place immediately following Athletic Testing. Second Cuts will be made after Session II at the beginning of Session III. The Final Roster will be posted to our Website and social media sites at the completion of Tryouts. Decorum Please remember that tryouts are uniquely stressful time for all involved; be positive and encouraging. Spectators are not permitted at any point before, during or after tryouts. If you would like to speak with a coach about a concern you may set up an appointment with Mr. Quering in the Athletic Office, on a day other than tryouts. Our coaching staff will not discuss any matters related to volleyball on the day of tryouts. The following factors will be used to influence a coach s selection: Tryout Evaluation Form: The tryout evaluation form provides an opinion on an individual s specific skill sets; it does not provide important details regarding non-skill attributes. Volleyball skills and IQ are of extreme importance when selecting a team; however, in some cases, a player may lack specific skills, but is considerably stronger and has greater athletic talent than the others. Our program places great value in athletic talent, therefore the evaluation form is a significant factor, but not solely conclusive to a decision.

Player Distribution: A quality, competitive team must have players that collectively possess all volleyball skills and attributes. A quality competitive team cannot be comprised of all servers and hitters. For example, once our program has enough servers and hitters, our selection will be more heavily weighted to other skills like setting, passing, and receiving. There are specific qualities we are looking for when filling each position on the court. Intangible Skills: coach-ability, respect, confidence, leadership, competitiveness, performance under pressure, court awareness, volleyball IQ and team chemistry. Improvement from the Prior Season (if the athlete was a member of the program the previous season). FHS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PARENT/PLAYER GUIDELINES 2018 All athletes who are selected to be members of the 2017 volleyball program will be required to adhere to the guidelines set forth in this document in addition to all school policies and regulations regardless of whether they are in season or out of season. Violations of school policies and regulations outside of the volleyball season may result in the inability of the athlete to try out for the program in future seasons. A. Items Issued to Players (must be returned in good condition) a. Two game jerseys b. One athletic bag B. Required Items to Purchase a. Spirit Pack (Nike brand) cash due to the banker no later than August 17, 2018 i. Includes 2 practice shirts, a team shirt, two pairs of game spandex, 1 pair of cover up shorts, 1 Jacket and four pair of game socks. b. Active Ankles c. Volleyball Shoes d. Solid black socks for practice e. Solid black practice spandex C. Attendance a. Intramurals and Skills Camp are not required to try out for the 2018 season. They are highly recommended in an effort to provide training that will be useful for success in tryouts. b. By choosing to participate in this program, you have committed yourself to attending every volleyball function for the 2018 season. The 2018 season begins on August 11th. Practice Schedules will be issued after tryouts have completed and may be different for the various levels. c. You may not miss practice, tournament obligations or competition for any other reason than family emergency or illness. In the case of repeated absences due to illness (more than twice), you must provide a doctor s note clearing you to play. If you are healthy enough to attend school, it will be expected that you are healthy enough to attend practice. The amount of physical exertion during practice will be determined by the sick player and the coach. If you miss school due to illness, you may not attend practice. If you are absent from any period of the school day on the day of a match, you will not be allowed to play in the match unless you have received prior approval. d. If you have already committed yourself to a club program for another sport, we encourage you to continue in this sport, however, you may not miss any volleyball practices, competitions or team functions, for another sport during the 2017 pre-season, regular season or post-season (if applicable). Players competing in post-season competition may not compete in any other pre-season sports intramurals. e. You may not attend pre-season intramurals for another sport at FHS during the volleyball season. This includes all Varsity members and JV/B players who are moved to the Varsity team for post-season competition (regardless of playing time).

i. 3 unapproved absences will result in removal from the program. ii. Late arrival to practice, without notifying your coach, may result in unapproved absences. A No Call No Show will result in immediate removal (coach s discretion may be necessary in some cases). f. You may not attend tryouts for another sport/activity during the volleyball season if it is a sport or activity that would require you to leave the volleyball program for, if selected (i.e. cheer tryouts, etc.). If it is determined that an athlete does attend tryouts for an event such as this, they will be removed from the program and will not be permitted to try out in the future. g. If you are a member of an extracurricular/curricular club or activity at Foothill High School, you will not be allowed to miss practice or competition for the club or activity unless the activity is required for a classroom grade. Please be sure to communicate which clubs and activities you are a part of to your coach as soon as possible to avoid conflicts. D. Decorum a. Players must wear the appropriate practice attire at all times i. Practice will begin at the scheduled time each day. We ask that players arrive in the gym 15 minutes prior to start time, dressed and ready to practice, in order to set up the proper practice equipment. ii. Hair must be dyed a natural color. Hair must be pulled back out of the face and jewelry is not permitted. iii. Athletes will be expected to display appropriate body language and attention throughout practice. Athletes will be expected to respond in a respectful and appropriate manner to their coaches and teammates and demonstrate behaviors that enhance team spirit and unify the team rather than exhibit behaviors that are divisive. iv. Divisive behaviors will be dealt with using progressive discipline 1. Demerits (a player can receive up to 5 demerits before removed from practice) 2. Temporary removal from practice 3. Removal from practice and a parent conference 4. 2 day suspension from practice and competition 5. Removal from the program v. All practices are closed to spectators unless otherwise advised. vi. Notify your coach (not teammates) if you feel you will be late for any reason. Athletes who are more than 30 minutes late to a practice will receive an unexcused absence unless otherwise notified by their coach. E. Matches a. On match days, athletes on the Freshmen and JV teams will participate in mandatory study hall at the specified time from the coach. Players will not be permitted to loiter outside of the athletic office or in the quad area. Players will be notified of the times and locations of study hall, once the season begins. b. All players must be present and on time for all pre-game activities as specified by the coach. Players must ride the school bus to and from each away match and must remain at Foothill to support the Varsity team and clean up the gym during home games. i. Freshmen and JV players may not sit with friends or parents while supporting the Varsity team. Players must sit together in the area designated by their coaches for the entirety of the Match. ii. Athletes will not be permitted to purchase food from the concession stand during the match. Please plan accordingly. c. Varsity players will be responsible for gym set-up before home matches, B and JV will be responsible for teardown. d. Varsity players will be expected to arrive at the designated time for walk-throughs and pre-game prior to each match. e. All athletes will be expected to meet for pre-game and bus pick-up at the times designated by their coaches. f. Parents should meet the players at FHS after away matches to pick them up. Players may not travel home with their parents after an away match unless there is an emergency situation. In this case, players will be released ONLY to their own parent or guardian with a note written and signed by that parent or guardian.

g. Coaches will not meet to discuss any problems that parents may have on the day of a match. If any parent has an issue that they feel needs discussion, that parent should set up a meeting with the athletic office and the coaches will reserve time to speak with them. Playing time will never be discussed and is at the coach s discretion. Players will not receive equal playing time. It is the philosophy of the program that playing time is a privilege and not a right. h. s from parents may be forwarded to the athletic office. i. Athletes who receive a yellow card during competition will lose playing time and receive demerits. j. Athletes who receive a behavioral red card during competition will be suspended from one practice and one volleyball match. Any subsequent red cards will be dealt with using progressive discipline. F. Tournaments/Fundraisers a. All players are required to participate in and work at all season tournaments. This includes set-up and tear-down procedures. Tournaments are our main source of fundraising for volleyball. b. Failure to attend tournaments, fundraisers or team events will result in unapproved absences and may result in removal from the program. G. Student-Athlete a. All players must adhere to all school policies, to include behavior and dress-code, in order to remain a part of the program. b. Any absence from school, even for a doctor s appointment, must be pre-arranged in advance with the attendance office unless there has been an emergency situation. c. Players must maintain a 2.0 GPA to remain in the program. i. If an athlete appears on the academic watch list, she will have one week to bring up her grades or will become ineligible to compete in competition. If the grades are not improved after the week of ineligibility, she will be removed from the program. ii. Players must be able to handle the stresses of balancing sports with academics. Players will not be allowed to skip practice to study unless they have been deemed INELIGIBLE. H. Substance Abuse a. The possession or use of any controlled substance, alcohol or tobacco products by a student athlete, whether it occurs on or off school property, is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action by the NIAA and removal from the Foothill Girls Volleyball Program. b. If it is determined that a member of the Foothill Girls Volleyball Program has not been involved in substance abuse but was present in an environment in which there was substance abuse, she will be suspended from practice and competition for a period of up to 5 days and may lose their starting position and/or playing time for a period of time up to the remainder of the season and any post-season competition. I. Student Decorum a. All athletes and managers in the Foothill Girls Volleyball Program will be expected to represent themselves, their coaches, teammates and families in an upright manner at all times. Disciplinary action will be taken if it is determined that an athlete is: i. Behaving in a disrespectful or subordinate manner in any of their classrooms at any time. ii. Out of dress-code iii. Participating in public displays of affection or immoral conduct on campus iv. Failing to adhere to school regulations and policies v. Involved in cases of academic dishonesty or failing to participate in classroom activities vi. Openly using foul language vii. Tardy to class viii. Use of cell phone during unauthorized times at school ix. Cheating or plagiarism x. Unprepared (lost equipment or forgot equipment) xi. Slandering teammates, coaches, or the Volleyball Program in any venue and in any way that would bring shame and discredit to our program and/or the athletes involved

xii. Disrespect of school property J. Bullying a. If it is determined that an athlete may be involved in a bullying incident, the athlete(s) involved will continue in their role in the program as usual until the completion of the investigation. If, at the completion of the investigation it is determined that an athlete was directly involved in a bullying incident as the bully, she will be removed from the program. If it is determined that the individual was indirectly involved with malicious intent, she will serve up to a 5 day suspension and may lose her starting position and/or playing time for a period of time up to the remainder of the season and any post-season competition. Any other missteps after this violation will result in removal from the program. K. Social Media a. Cell Phones i. Keep them out of sight during all volleyball functions; to include: sitting in the bleachers during home and away games. ii. Players may listen to music on the bus quietly to themselves. If you distract other players, coaches or the bus drivers, this privilege will be taken away. Cell phones and electronic devices must be put away upon entering any gym for practice and/or competition. iii. If a player is non-compliant, their cell phone or electronic device will be taken and given to the athletic office, where a parent can then pick it up. b. Internet Use i. Do not conduct yourselves in a manner which will reflect discredit on yourselves, your peers, the FHS Volleyball Program (its coaches and affiliates) and/or your school. If it is deemed by the coaching staff that your actions on the internet, and/or social media websites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), will reflect discredit to any of these groups, you will be subject to removal from the program. Coach s discretion will be used in all instances after consulting with the Dean s office and your parent(s) and/or guardian(s). L. Post-Secondary a. Be sure to register for the NCAA Clearinghouse with your counselor at the beginning of your Junior year, in order to receive scholarships and/or accept any offer to compete in sports at the collegiate level. b. If you are interested in playing volleyball at the college level, please inform your coaches so we can guide you in the process. M. Contact Information a. If you have additional questions and/or concerns about participation in the 2018 season, please contact Krysta Ortiz at ortizkn@nv.ccsd.net Please detach, sign and return prior to tryouts I have read and will adhere to the guidelines set forth in the FHS Girls Volleyball Player/Parent Rules and Guidelines 2018 document. I agree to conduct myself in a manner that positively represents myself, my peers, the FHS Women s Volleyball Program (its coaches and affiliates) and my school. I understand that tobacco use, alcohol use, stealing, vandalism, the use of drugs other than prescribed by a physician, violation of team attendance and training and violation of the guidelines in this contract, will result in removal from the program (in accordance with FHS and NIAA guidelines for student athletes). I understand that situations may arise in which the coaches may utilize their own discretion to solve problems that could be considered detrimental to the program.
