1 Volume 1, Issue 2 October 2017 HOMECOMING EDITION Bri'Vonni Revere (2020) HOCO Queen Dia with date Stephen (2018) Homecoming took place on September 30. The students of West High and Dater gathered in the top floor of Western Hills High School in the cafeteria. It ran from the time of 7PM until 10PM. For some, it was a great time. As you walk into West High top floor cafeteria, you see brightly colored neon lights and decor everywhere you turn. Just about everyone was all dressed up and looking nice. The crowd danced the night away to popular hits played by a DJ. For more Homecoming pictures, see page 6. Friday Night Lights Mikayla Howard (2019) On Friday the 29th, the Western Hills Mustangs played against Middletown Christian Eagles. The final score was with a record of 1-5. The team had four touchdowns. Johnathan Harrison (#60 Dater) scored one of the four touchdowns in the game. Two Western Hills players scored touchdowns Jaron (2019) and Elaysia (2019) HOCO Proposals Jason Harrison (2019) Homecoming is a enchanted time filled with love and heart filled proposals next to Prom Homecoming is the most romantic time in school. Dater did not fall short of proposals they were amazing and left many people with tears of joy here are a few of the best proposals throughout the week. People do homecoming proposals to show the school how strongly they feel about this special person. Hezekiah (2018) asked Ebony (2018) [not pictured] with an outstanding proposal. This proposal took place during the school pep rally Hezekiah proposed to Ebony with the whole football team behind him cheering him on. They sealed the magical experience with a kiss.

2 The Maroon & Gold Page 2 Spirit Week Monday: Jersey Day Adrien Edwards (2020) Monday was jersey day as part of the spirit week at Dater High School. There were a lot of people in their jerseys on Monday. Everybody was rocking their favorite sports teams: basketball, hockey, and baseball. Overall, the day was a success. Anthony (2018) and Shumyla (2019) Karmaria (2018) and Mika (2019) Tuesday: Pajama Day Zubieda Sabbagh (2020) Quran, Kaleb, and Adam (all 2020) Class of 2018: Paint War Dedra Brock (2018) Pajama day was Tuesday, the second day of homecoming spirit week. Everyone was dressed in pajamas and were getting ready for homecoming. Kadidjatou, De'Shyra, Chastity, and Fatou (all 2019) On September 20, 2017, the class of 2018 had a paint war; it was organized by Mrs. Haines and paint was thrown from bowls. The purpose of the paint war was to create their own class color for spirit week. When asking seniors who took part, Paige said, It s like when we all were together nothing mattered. All the problems went away, all the drama went away, and we all were just a group of friends who weren t separated. Like we were all one. Malia, a senior who watched (but did not join in), said, I d say it was electrifying. There was so much action! Everyone seemed like they had so much fun.

3 The Maroon & Gold Page 3 Spirit Week Wednesday: Celebrity Day Ally Elliott (2020) Celebrity Day was Wednesday September 27, Many students and some staff participated in spirit week and some got very creative. The whole point of celebrity day was to dress up as your favorite celebrity. Nick (2019) as Mrs. Creighton Jason (2019), Miquez (2018), and Jermaine (2018) Ms. Toben as Ruth Bader Ginsburg Thursday: Black Out Day Luis Zelaya (2018) Black out day is when people wear all black for the whole day. We wore black on black out day to show our school spirit. The whole school was able to participate and wear black throughout the whole day. Not everyone wore black but a lot of people wore black, and it looked like it was a success. Josh (2018) Jalia, Ally, Cristina, and Cristian (all 2020)

4 The Maroon & Gold Page 4 Spirit Week Friday: Class Color Day & Pep Rally On September 29, 2017, the senior high students gathered in the West High gym to have their Pep Rally before the homecoming game. The purpose of the Pep Rally was to recognize the cheerleaders, football, volleyball, soccer, and band players. Also during the Pep Rally, students of each grade, participated in different games and showed their school spirit. The games were tug-a-war, hungry hippos, shooting contest, and a relay race. Each class competed against each other in the games. Many of the senior high students enjoyed the Pep Rally. Everyone was excited and energetic afterwards. Jazmine, a senior, said, the Pep Rally was fun to watch. 5 The Maroon & Gold Page 5 No Dress, No Heels, No Entry Lily Taylor (2019) As far as dress codes go the typical school rule prohibits the four b s, those are breasts, backs, bellies, and butts, however, patrons to this homecoming dance are limited just a little more. While the normal four b s still apply, the homecoming dress code also prohibits wearing jeans, boots,and gym shoes. These regulations are questionable considering even brides wear converse and gym shoes on their wedding day. Gym shoes shouldn t be seen as informal they should be seen as the comfortable shoes they are. It is hard enough to shop for a dress as a teenage girl with the clothes companies put on the rack. Imagine trying to find the perfect dress when an entire society is telling you you can t. It is almost impossible to find a dress that satisfies the dress code, fits, and looks good, those kinds of dresses just don t exist, especially not at an affordable price. When at homecoming a student should be having fun with their friends not worrying about how much their feet hurt because they were wearing uncomfortable shoes. Dress codes are important but they often can go too far, regulations against showing skin are understandable but they should not compromise comfort.
