1 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 A New Generation of Cheerleading Cheering at the homecoming football game was a little different than cheering at any other football game. It was different because we, the high school football cheerleaders, had a few special guests cheer with us in the first, third, and fourth quarters. The special guests that cheered with us in the first quarter were the alumni cheerleaders. When they cheered with us it was just like having a bigger team because they did all the same cheers as us. After the first quarter was over, we cheered by ourselves until the third quarter. We had the little league cheerleaders, and middle school cheerleaders cheering with us the third and fourth quarters. It was different than cheering with the alumni cheerleaders because they did not do the same cheers as us, and we did not do the same cheers as them. However, we knew most of the cheers they started, because most of us cheered on our little league and middle school teams before. Unfortunately, they did not know hardly any cheers we started because they have not cheered on the high school team yet. We just let them start most of the cheers for this reason. Overall this game was very eventful for all of the cheerleaders and people that watch it.

2 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 The South Point High School Band of Gold Last week the South Point Band of Gold went to a competition in Kentucky. It was an early three to four hour trip. We stopped a few times to eat and use the bathroom. After a while we arrived unexpectedly late at 11:47 when we were supposed to be there at 11:15. It was a very rushed hour but we still managed to get ready on time. Once we got there we changed and performed at 1:45. It was kind of hot but we were confident and determined. We then finished and waited for the awards to be announced. Everyone was so excited and pumped, we all had our fun cheers and we sang. It turned out we didn t make finals. But there s always next time!

3 POINTER NEWS #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 SPHS JV Volleyball vs. Ashland On Tuesday, September 19, 2017, the South Point High School JV volleyball team took on the Ashland Kittens JV team at Paul G. Blazer High School in Ashland, Kentucky. This was a non-conference game for South Point, and the second non-conference game in a row. The JV team opened the season with a 1-0 record. In this match, the Lady Pointers dropped the first set, but came back strong to win two sets in a row. This gave the Pointers a victory over the Kittens, 2-1. The Pointers were led offensively by sophomores LaDiamond Crawley and Olivia Curd. South Point began conference play the following week, taking on the Ironton Fighting Tigers at home.

4 POINTER NEWS #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 Pointer Volleyball VS The Chesapeake Panthers On August 31st, our South Point High School varsity volleyball team took home a devastating loss. To start off the game, Sara Allen (#7) served a hard serve to the left corner of our opponents, the Chesapeake Panthers, court. In the start of the first set, it was already a close game. To tie us up before a called time out from Chesapeake, once again, Sara Allen roll hits it over and changes the score to 7-7. Both teams have a good defense and good communication skills. During the second rotation, Maddy Khounlavong (#11), went in to serve. With a decent serve, the Panthers are able to return the ball and score the next two times on us and get a 3-point lead (11-14). As the end of the first set rolls through, The Panthers are able to pull through and win the first set, Chesapeake attains the first serve in the beginning of the second set, and finishes with an ace. The game starts off poorly for South Point, but we are able to gain points with good serves and a fair defense. As Rachael Wheeler (#9) goes in to serve, she throws in two good serves and helps us tie the game up, 66. Towards the middle of the set, the score is still tied, Both teams have a huge IQ for the game and play smart with sneaky pushes and small tips. South Point is able to knock the ball down and keep the score close. The score of the second set ended as 21-25, Chesapeake. South Point serves in the third and starts the set off with a lead. Although both teams have equal talent, Chesapeake was able to keep and hold a lead. Towards the middle of the third set, the Panthers lead by 6. Despite the fact that South Point was down, they continue to keep their heads up and push through. As the end of the game comes near, the Pointers gain some point and is only down by 3. To try and break Chesapeake s momentum, Coach Baise calls a time out to calm our girls and to help them with their mistakes. To finish the game, Chesapeake wins with the score of 2025.

5 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 Class Rings and Inspiration At first glance, you can never tell what s going on in someone s life. Speaker, Luke Keller, for Herf Jones, visited South Point High School on October 12, 2017 to tell his life story and the importance of graduating high school. Luke Keller looks like an ordinary guy. You would have never guessed the problems he had dealt with growing up. All throughout school, he faced depression and personal family issues. He wondered what he would do in his life considering that his whole family didn't succeed. With faith in God and many dreams, he graduated high school. He stated that graduating is a major step in life, and that his class ring was very important to him. Our entire freshman class signed a banner and set short term and long term goals that we will not see until senior year. Luke taught us that even if there are bumps in the road you still need to keep driving.

6 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 South Point Football 2017 South Point takes another hard loss October 6 th after 2-0 start. The Dragons took over from the start of the game, and never let up. South Point only had sixteen players compared to Fairland s thirty. South Point has struggled all year with injuries, and people quitting and it s only getting worse. Next week, they will lose three two-way starters due to failed drug tests. The pointers had many good offensive drives, but couldn t find a way to score. Fairland got off to an early 14-0 start in the first quarter, and kept pushing from there. South Point then made a nice offensive drive inside the Fairland ten yard line, but quarterback Ronnie Anderson came down with an ankle injury soon after. Fairland then took a 33-0 lead heading into halftime. The pointers onside kick at halftime was barely recovered by Fairland. South Point s defense then kept the dragons scoreless after that. South Point looks to snap the losing streak next week at Chesapeake, battling with only 14 players.

7 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 The Pointers vs. the Fairland Dragons Last Friday night our football team played Fairland for our homecoming game. This game was not only exciting because it was homecoming, but also because I got to cheer in it with the Alumni cheerleaders, as well as the Little League cheerleaders. My favorite part of the game was during halftime. I enjoyed seeing the homecoming attendants being escorted down the field. It was also really neat to hear the homecoming queen be announced. Fairland was beating us 26-0 at half time. We did not score the rest of the game. The final score was Sadly, we lost, but the boys played to the best of their ability. I had a fun night as well as a great experience for my freshman homecoming game.

8 POINTER NEWS #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 Setting Goals for the Future Today at school we had a visitor. He came to talk to us about class rings and the Believe in You program. What really stood out to me was his story that he told us about why he wanted to join the Believe in You program and what his class ring meant to him. His class ring meant a lot to him, when he woke up every morning he looked at his ring because it reminded him of his goals and what he strides the hardest to achieve in life. On one side he had a bible verse and on the other side he had a football. His one goal in life was to make it to the NFL. Not for the money or the fame, but to get his family out of then circumstances they were in. They went from living in a nice house in a nice neighborhood to living in a trailer in the middle of no where. Meanwhile, all within the same year, his dad left and his uncle got arrested along with multiple cousins. He became very depressed and was even ready to kill himself at one point. He turned his life around and got back on track. During a football game, he went to go run and his ankle gave out on him. He thought he would be fine, so the next game he went out and his ankle completely crumbled. All this time he was told that it was a sprain and really he had tore all the ligaments in the back of his ankle. When he went in to get surgery they operated on the wrong ankle. Before waiting for him to wake up the just went ahead and operated on the other ankle that was actually hurt. He was in a wheelchair for a while. Months pass and his ankle hasn't got any better so he goes back and they found out that they didn't even fix his ankle they just scraped it out. Later on he broke his wrist while blocking during a game. He wasn't going to be able to play football again. He was okay with it though, because even though he didn't make it to the NFL he still reached his goal. He got his family out of the circumstances that they were in. They lived in a nice house in a nice neighborhood now. He wanted to share his story and join the program because of what he had been through and he wanted to inspire others.

9 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 SPHS Homecoming Olympics October fifth is a free day at South Point High School. On this day South Point High School lets all their students have a free day of fun activities. This day was for the students to get their spirits up for not only the homecoming dance, but the Homecoming football game. The South Point High School football team took on Fairland. The Homecoming Olympics is a day filled with with outdoor activities for all the students to take part in. The Student Council organized a lot of fun games for the South Point students to to play. South Point sure knows how to lift the spirit s of their students. The Homecoming dance took place on October seventh. The Homecoming Olympics were just another way to increase the school spirit at South Point High School.

10 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 Band of Gold Competes in Rock Hill Band Invitational On Saturday, September 16, the South Point Band of Gold competed in the Rock Hill Band Invitational. The day began at 10:00 am with a two-hour practice, then a visual practice for one hour. They then loaded the buses and cheered on bands as they waited for their turn to perform. At 6:30 they got in uniform and went into warm up block. Competing in class double A they won first place auxiliary, percussion, and band. Overall, they won best visual performance, visual effect, music, general effect, and band booster spirit award! They also won grand champs, and qualified for state! Our school if very proud of our marching band. We wish them luck as their new season begins.

11 #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 Pointer Football vs. the Ironton Tigers During the game Friday night, we took an unfortunate loss against the Ironton Tigers. South Point had many injuries and mishaps which caused us to not play to our potential. I still have hope that we can play well after these mishaps pass! We suffered a large loss last game against Coal Grove when our starting quarterback was injured. That was a rough incident but we are the Pointers and we will bounce back and play to our potential.

12 POINTER NEWS #gopointers A School of Champions Fall 2017 Pointers Soccer Has a Competitive Senior Night vs. the Panthers The Pointers took on the Panthers Tuesday night at home. It was also senior night for both the girls and boys soccer team. At the beginning of the game, the Pointers started out strong. Within the first half, the Pointers had their first goal. Which came from junior, Bryan Waller. From the start to half time the boys continued to play strong. Coming into the second half, the game started to become an intense back and forth battle between the Panthers and the Pointers. The Panthers then began to catch up by scoring their first goal, it was now tied. Weather conditions did not help the teams much either, as it was raining. However, the Panthers came back to score their second goal and take the lead. But, the Pointers did not give up as sophomore, Carmie McGuffin got the game tied up with a goal. Both team played hard and aggressive till the very end, however, South Point fell short to Chesapeake 3-2.
