1 Nonfiction:Informational Books By: Samantha Craig & Monikkah Heredia Informational books are used to inform readers about a particular subject, issue, or idea. They have factual information about the world that excites as well as informs readers with many different categories that can be used to help students to understand,play a game or do a craft with.

2 Stellaluna Author and Illustrator: Janell Cannon Genre: NonFiction: Information Grade Range: Primary and Intermediate Plot Summary: This story is about a young bat named Stellaluna who gets seperated from her mom and winds up in a birds nest. She grows up with these birds and learns their ways like learning how to fly. While flying one night she runs into another animal that looks like her and tells her that she is a bat, not a bird. While talking to the other bat, other bats come and join them and one of them is Stellaluna s mom. She joins the bats and learns their ways. Then she goes to her bird family, Pip, Flap, and Flitter and teaches them the ways to be a bat. Pip Flap, and Flitter like some of the things bats do but then they remember that birds don t fly and night and decide to be birds and have Stellaluna be a bat, but still remain friends. Reader Response Activity: Have the students think of two other animals that are different but do similar things. Have them write the animals similaties and differences. Then have them draw a picture of each animal and show how they are similar.

3 One Tiny Turtle Author: Nicola Davies Illustrator: Jane Chapman Genre: NonFiction: Information Grade Range: Primary and Intermediate Plot Summary: This book is set in the ocean and tells the about the life of a turtle, a Loggerhead turtle. It shows how a turtle lives beneath seaweed and driftwood and how her shell is very soft as a baby turtle. She eats tiny crabs and shrimps and that she like humans cannot breath underwater, that she needs to come up every four to five minutes, unless she is sleeping then can hold her breath for hours. It shows how she grows, when she becomes a real Loggerhead and what she does to survive. Then she goes back to the beach where she was born to lay her own eggs and shows how she makes her nest and how she leaves after laying her eggs. Once the baby turtles are born they have to find their way to the beach to find their mom without being eaten by crabs or birds but only one makes it all the way. Reader Response Activity: Give the students a worksheet that has words that describe turtles and have them draw a picture of a turtle as a baby and a turtle as an adult in two blank spots. Then have the students pick out the words that describe each turtle and place them underneath the correct turtle.

4 Math for All Seasons Author: Greg Tang Illustrator: Harry Briggs Genre: NonFiction: Information Grade Range: Primary and Intermediate Plot Summary: This book is filled with math riddles that are being told for each season. It has the reader count the objects for each season and gives a hint to help get the right answer. Reader Response Activity: Have the students make up their own math riddles using things they like. Give them examples like food or animals. Have them write out a couple of them, like 5 or 10 depending on grade. Then let them draw and color a picture to along with their riddle.

5 Henry s Freedom Box; A True Story from the Underground Railroad Author: Ellen Levine Illustrator: Kadir Nelson Genre: Nonfiction Grade Range: Primary to Intermediate Plot Summary: Henry Brown was a slave who worked in a big house with his brothers and sisters. His master got very sick and decided to give Henry to his son. He was taken away from his family and sent to work for his new master. One day when Henry was out he met a girl name Nancy who he soon made his wife. They had three beautiful children who were eventually sold in the slave market along with his wife. Many weeks passed and the heartbroken and lonely Henry came up with a plan to become free. With the help of a friend, He boxed himself up and was shipped to Pennsylvania. After a long, bumpy, and uncomfortable ride Henry had finally arrived in Pennsylvania where he got the new name Henry Box Brown. Reader Response Activity: The teacher will first prompt the students by asking them what they think happened to Henry s wife and kids, his mother, and his brothers and sisters. Now the students will have a chance to write their own ending as to what they thought might have happened in the end if the story talked about his family members.

6 The Seed and the Giant Saguaro Author: Jennifer Ward Illustrator: Mike K. Ranger Genre: Nonfiction Grade Range: Primary Plot Summary: The story starts off with a giant saguaro in the middle of the desert. There is a packrat in the desert who picks up the fruit that the giant saguaro dropped onto the ground. As the packrat carries his fruit along he is followed by many other desert animals such as a snake, a coyote, and a road runner. Then a thunderstorm hits moistening the ground for the seeds from the fruit to sink into. Thanks to the packrat and the seed he dropped a new giant saguaro is growing. Reader Response Activity: Students will be numbered off and put into small groups. Each small group will write a similar short story that builds on itself like this one does. Students are allowed to write on anything their group can agree on.

7 The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest Author: Lynn Cherry Illustrator: Unknown Genre: Nonfiction Grade Range: Primary to Intermediate Plot Summary: This story is a story that brings awareness to the consequences of destroying rain forests. It begins with two men entering the rain forest with the intention of chopping down trees. One man becomes exhausted from hacking away and he falls asleep on the floor of the rain forest. Many different rain forest animals approach him and whisper in his ear. They beg that he won t cut down their home. When the man awakens, he is surprised to see the exotic rain forest animals and a young boy staring back at him. He takes a glance at the beautiful Kapok tree and decides not to chop it down. Reader Response Activity: Students will write a letter the author Lynne Cherry explain everything they do in their lives to help protect the environment.
