February 2007 The Panther Press 2007 s Future City Weiv Naeco Future City: Post Trip by Bridgette McCarthy After four months of hard work, the model in all of its glory, was finally done and ready to go to the competition. The long trip took us to Hudson Valley Community College, where the fourth annual Future City Competition took place. Even though the college was big, the entire place was filled with presentations and spectators as they came and heard about the new cities. The presentations were very interesting, and there were very creative ideas. Michael Rhodes, Emily Michienzi, and Angela Petrino of the seventh grade provided a quick but interesting presentation. Lake Pleasant Central School won the award for Best Futuristic Transportation System. Many people, especially the Seventh Grade, learned something new from their participation this year. Hopefully, they will use the new-found information to bring new ideas into the city model of next year. A very special event occurred while we were there. Michael Rhodes appeared on Channel 10 News.. Congratulations! WE VE GOT PANTHER PRIDE INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Future City 1 Build A Canoe 2 Movie Review Snowboarding 3 Carnival 4 Carnival & Survey 5 Birthdays 6 Reader s Theater 7 Deerfoot Lodge Meet the Teacher 8
Page 2 BUILDING A CANOE... By Maria Weaver This year s ninth grade class has been making a beautiful cedar strip canoe with paddles and two seats. The hard work and dedication that was put in from the class has made the canoe a remarkable piece of work even though it is still not finished. I believe though when the canoe is finished, it will be breathtaking. The ninth grade class started out by measuring and getting the items needed. Then, two people, Samantha Blanchard and Lizzie Perkins made two awesome paddles. The small deck that will be put on will be made by Donnie Pinkerton, and the two seats were made by Jennifer Wickes and myself. Once all of the parts are put together, the canoe will be finished. The ninth grade class is asking that people please buy canoe tickets to help raise money to go to N.Y City this year. Please help out the ninth grade class by asking any of these ninth graders, Nick Menzel, Anthony McCarthy, Brian Eldredge, Donnie Pinkerton, Jennifer Wickes, Valerie Hayes, Lizzie Perkins, Samantha Blanchard, Rianna Herring, or Maria Weaver to purchase a ticket. If you buy any tickets, we as the ninth grade thank you for your support. Please Help the Ninth Grade! Buy a Canoe Ticket From Any Ninth Grader. I ll be your best friend.
Movie Review By Caitlyn Mattice Jump In is a Disney Channel Original Movie that first was shown on January 12, The movie, starring Corbin Blue from High School Musical and Keke Palmer from Akeelah and the Bee, is about Izzy, a young Boxer. He is training to follow in his dad s footsteps by attempting to win the Golden Glove Award. One of his friends, Mary, convinces him to join her in the Double Dutch Jump-rope tournament. Now that Izzy likes Double Dutch, he does not want to win the Golden Gloves. Watch the movie to see what else happens! I hope that you like Jump In, because I liked this movie. I would recommend this movie and I think it is four stars out of five. Page 3 SNOWBOARDING by Caleb Hayes This year..sadly...oak Mountain was closed. So the Youth Recreation Committee sponsored some money to let the kids go to..gore MOUNTAIN!!!!!!! At the start, we had to get our pictures taken for our passes. Then, we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. The first Sunday we were supposed to go, Gore canceled, due to the rain. They canceled again the next week, because it was soooooo bad. Finally came the day we got to go to Gore Mountain. At Gore, we got our passes, found our lesson leaders, and then went on our first lessons. After our lessons, we go to the lodge and meet up with others from our school. After that, we get into our groups and get some free time on the slopes. Some people ski and some people snowboard. We will be skiing for 6 lessons. At the end of our six lessons, we get a whole day of free skiing. All the kids are having fun so far. Don t forget to give a big pat on the back to Dickie Mayers. He is the Youth Recreation Director.
Page 4 CARNIVAL By Brianne O Rourke & Karlie Tomlinson On January 26th there was a Carnival here at school. There were many fun things to do including a joust, four way tug-of-war, football toss, moon bounce, giant slide, obstacle course, face painting, and lots of food, including cotton candy! This carnival was a great carnival! Kids from Wells, Piseco, and Lake Pleasant came. I think the best part was the four way tug of war and the jousting.
Page 5 This survey question was asked in the classes at Lake Pleasant: If you went to the Carnival, what was your favorite activity? Bouncy Castle Bouncy Slide Face Painting Food Football Throw Jousting Obstacle Course Tug-of-War The chart definitely shows that the Obstacle Course was this year s most popular activity according to our survey. Some suggestions were also made for next year the most popular being to bring back the Mechanical Bull, but also included were to bring back the Bungee Run, Bungee Jump for flips, making wax hands, and original obstacle course. Possible additions were rides like the ducks out on the playground. AND many requests for keeping the cotton candy!

Page 7 READER S THEATER By Jocelyn Foster First thing in Reader s Theater is you have to know what you want to read. Reader s Theater is about people who dress all in black. You also have to know what story you want. When you are in Reader s Theater you have to read a story about something that you like. If you don t know, then find out by asking Miss. J. for an idea. You need to read smoothly and not like a robot, or the people that you are reading to will not understand the story that you are reading. Once you find the book that you want, then you will practice reading it. After, you are reading it smoothly, you need to use a type of voice so that the audience can tell the dif- ferent people. Find out how many characters there are in the story because you will need to use a different voice for each one. Start reading in front of people. Then start reading in front of more, and more, and more people by the minute. You also have to read the book with the right kind of voices. You have to do it with the right kind of voices so that it sounds real. I hope that you get a chance to get to try this sometime. It is a lot of fun for both the performer and the audience. DEERFOOT LODGE By Daniel Page Deerfoot Lodge is a summer camp for boys. Deerfoot is located on Route 30 by the landmark known as Pig Rock just north of Speculator.
