1 BARTON COMMUNITY EDUCATION WINTER 2014 WINTER CLASSES BEGIN JANUARY 28, 29 AND 30 AFTER SCHOOL 2:00 3:00 pm or THIS WINTER S COMMUNITY EDUCATION PLAY: THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster Directed by Karen Bair An endearing story about Milo, a very bored little boy, receives an unusual package one day: a makebelieve tollbooth. When he drives through it in his electric toy car, he is suddenly transported to the Lands Beyond, a fantastic world of imagination. PERFORMANCES: Wednesday, March 3:00 pm for Minneapolis Kids and Barton Learning Center Thursday, March 7:40 am for Grades K-4 with their classrooms Thursday, March 6:30 pm for family and friends Friday, March 6:30 pm for family and friends. Closing night followed by a social gathering in the gym
2 AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITY EDUCAION CLASSES: TUESDAYS 2:00 UKULELE FOR BEGINNERS (GRADES 1-2) Each week we will build on the previous lesson by adding new skills, chords, and songs. We will complete the class with a group performance. Instructor: Carrie Bell from Twin Town. Cost: $75 class only, $125 class, uke and tuner. See registration page for more details. 2:00 3:00 pm. Jan 28 th - March 4 th (6 weeks). QOYA KIDS (GRADES 3-6) Qoya Kids uses yoga, dance, play and mindfulness to educate and inspire the whole child - mind, body and spirit. During class we will explore themes such as gratitude, dancing your desires, getting out of a funk, transitions and planting a seed. Each class will be accompanied by amazing music from around the world. Instructor: Emma Lloyd. Cost: $30. 2:00 3:00 p.m. Jan. 28 March 18 FUN WITH FOOD (GRADES 3-6): Get hands-on in the kitchen! We ll choose some of your food favorites and learn how to make them from scratch. You ll practice basic knife skills, cooking techniques, learn food safety and table manners with Jen Antila of Catalyst Cooks. Cost: $40 (includes food). 2:00 3:00 pm Jan. 28 March 18 YOGA WITH ELLA (GRADES k-4): This yoga class teaches you to become a better listener, gratitude, manners and keep your calm center. Instructor: Ella Chissotti. Cost: $ :00 3:00 p.m. Feb 4 March 18. This class starts one week later than others. CHEERLEADING (GRADES 2-4) Barton 5 th graders will teach you cheers go Barton! The group will perform a cheer at a morning meeting and a few Barton sporting events. Instructors: Audrey Sauer and Lilly Fish with sponsor, Dajhi (a former cheerleader for MPS). YOUNG DANCE FOR ALL ABILITIES (GRADES 3-6): Young Dance has a 25 year history of transforming lives through movement in Minneapolis. 3 SPECIALTY CLASSES: RED CROSS BABYSITTER TRAINING CLASS The Red Cross Babysitter training will teach you leadership, safety, basic child development, safe play, rescue breathing and first aid. Students receive a babysitters packet that includes a handbook, CD that includes marketing ideas, ways to organize, information to take to the job and activities. You must be 11 years old to take this class. Instructors: Nettie Magnuson and Cindy Smedberg. Cost: $65 includes handbook to keep. 9:00 am 3:00 pm Friday, January 17 on no school. MARTIN LUTHER KING PEACE NECKLACE Make a necklace peace sign in honor of Martin Luther King Day as we talk about ways we can spread peace in our school and community. Instructor: Lisa MacMartin from Heartfelt Store. Jan. 16 2:00 3:00. Cost: $5 for this one day event. FAMILY CLASSES: SEWING BASICS (FAMILIES, KIDS AGES 8+) Bring your sewing machine. Basic sewing supply list provided at first session. Instructor: Annik Miller. 5 Tuesdays Jan. 28 March 4 6:00 7:00 pm. (no class Feb 4). Cost: $40 PIZZA AND ROBOTS!! Parents, students and staff are invited to a fun, informative and entertaining evening of pizza and robotic demonstrations by Barton students and coaches who participated in First Lego League this fall. Students will demonstrate their robot games and project presentations. Coaches and students will share their experiences and answer questions about First Lego League in the hopes that their grass roots efforts will continue to grow in the Barton community. $5 per family to cover the cost of pizza. Wednesday, January 5:30 pm in the Commons. MOTHER DAUGHTER ART WORKSHOP This will be an amazing weekend retreat with internationally known mixed media artist, Sabrina Ward Harrison. Date TBA (late March). For more information contact Cindy in the community education office at ADULT CLASSES: MOSAIC PROJECTS WITH KAREN SAVAGE Create a beautiful mosaic piece of art.
