1 The Lewis Link David Lewis Public School Trustee: Manna Wong Area Superintendent: Louie Papathanasakis Vice-Principal: Lisa Schwartz PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE By Karen Peach NOVEMBER 2016 Here we are again caught up in the bustle of another busy November and the preparations and plans for the upcoming holidays. The magic of the season has certainly arrived to lift all spirits and warm all hearts around our school. Festive music, decorative artwork and special classroom and school activities are engaging all active and eager learners at all grade levels. Much of our classroom and school activity has focused for the last six weeks around volleyball and basketball tournaments, our preparations/assessments for the progress report cards, our Grade 7/8 music trip to Jackson s Point, the annual Grade 7/8 Multicultural Day, the planning for our Dance-a-thon fundraiser and the organizing of the annual Christmas concert which will be held on December 15 th at 6:30 p.m. Many of our students enjoyed class trips which you will read about later in the newsletter. Class excursions build experiences, expand knowledge and broaden student eyes to the world around them. I thank the teachers who plan these wonderful learning opportunities for your children. Trip to Aquarium Hi there, I m Denise. I m here to talk about our grade 3 trip to Ripley s Aquarium! I really liked it when we went into the Dangerous Lagoon. Not only were there sharks swimming above us, but there were signs that told us information about the creatures in the tanks like the Sea Green Turtle. One thing that I noticed was on some of the signs, it said Endangered Species, while on others it said, Threatened Species. I felt so bad for them and it made me want to know more about these animals and how I could help them. My favourite part of the trip was learning more about the aquarium and the animals that lived there. I was lucky to be in Mrs. MacInnis group because we got to talk to two men work there who do cool things like swim in the tanks and help integrate new animals to the tanks. They both taught us about really interesting things like, how female sword sharks are the biggest creature and they answered lots of our questions. Afterward the two workers gave every student one shark tooth. A REAL SHARK TOOTH! Everyone got one including me! It looks like a big long tooth with two small sharp things on either side of it. Not quite how I imagined it, but it works! I had a great day. By: Denise Cruz (Room 204) 1

2 On Wednesday, November 9, the primary classes went to Ripley s Aquarium. We took a school bus to go there. When we arrived at the Aquarium, we first hung up our coats and personal belongings on the hooks. Next we went to the fish tank area. We saw crabs, jellyfish, and turtles. Then we went onto the automatic sidewalk. We saw sharks, sawfish, and other types of fish too. At the end of the tour, there was an area where we could pat the horseshoe crabs. We watched a diving show on our way back for lunch. We watched the diver feed the sting rays. Then we went for lunch. After lunch, we went on the slide and played in the area for a bit. As we still had some time left, we watched the fish again. Finally, we got on the school bus and went back to school. By: Jason Liu (Room 203) On Wednesday, November 9, we went to Ripley's Aquarium. The grade 1, 2 and 3 classes went to the Aquarium to learn about sea creatures and plants. We went on the moving sidewalk and we looked at the fish. We also saw the dive show. We saw the diver feed the sting rays. Then we patted the horseshoe crabs. Next we went to pat the bamboo sharks. Finally, we went on the school bus to go back to school. By: Amber Cheng (Room 203) Remembrance Day Assembly November 11 th is the day we remember the Canadian heroes who fought and died for our country. Each class made a wreath and a special assembly was held on this Memorial Day. The Grade 1 students in Room 102 made poppy art. 2

4 Leaf Animals Art Creative artists in Room 105 collected and used the fall leaves to make animals. Mrs. Peach was so amazed with their work. What a wonderful idea! Decorating for Christmas Christmas is just around the corner, Lewis students are helping to decorate the Christmas tree in front of the office. 4

5 The Safety of our Children is always our Top Priority On November 16 th, Police Officer Claudia, was invited to present talks about safety to all the students at David Lewis. 5

6 Math Caribou Contest by Mrs. Kumar and Mrs. Fung The computer lab was occupied by all grade 3 to 8 math club students on November 16 th to participate in the Math Caribou Contest. In the grade 3-4 category, Chris Chen was placed 298 th (top 6%) and Vlad Vucovan was placed 587 th (top 12%) out of 5,261contestants. In the grade 5-6 category, Cici Zhu, Sivan Xu and Kevin Zhu came in the top 7% in the world. For the grade 7-8 category, Kevin Yang came 73 rd (top 1%) and Danielle Chiu came 277 th (top 4%) out of 7,849 contestants. Congratulation to all the students who participated in this contest and keep up the good work! Dance-a-thon Fundraiser at Lewis Our Dance-a-thon happened on November 24 th and it was amazingly successful. Students were divided into four groups and were invited to come down to the gym for an hour of dancing and fun. Thank you to Mrs. Mangaloglu for her amazing leadership! All of our teachers and students enjoyed the dance-a-thon. We have collected a total of $7, which will go towards the purchase of new computers. Prizes were awarded to students on November 29 th. 6
