2 Page 2 The Echo.O Cross Country By: Morgan Moon Our cross country team recently ran at the Southeastern Invitational on September 15, and did very well. The middle school girls actually got first overall, which is a very big accomplishment. So if you see any of them this week, be sure to congratulate them. The high school boys got fourth overall and they each got their individual records at this meet also. The top three boys were Dylan Newton in ninth (17:32), Matt Koehler in 14th (18:18), and Justin Trapp in 16th (18:21). The girls top three were Macy Conrad in 68th (27:33), Amy Thomas in 75th (28:30), and Morgan Moon in 88th (31:20). This week we run at both Hargus Lake on Tuesday and Rio Grande on Saturdaywhich is one of the biggest meets of the season. So, if you re free, come out and help support our team. Battle of the Bands By: Natasha Mumford Westfall took first place in the fifth annual Battle of the bands at Pickaway-Ross on Friday, September 7. This is the first year that we have won this contest when it was open to all high schools in Ross and Pickaway counties. The performance of Party Rock Anthem earned 22 percent of the votes from both the students and staff at PRCTC! The senior band members even got to do a dance during the song. They will be given the Pick-Ross cup at the game this Friday, September 21. The previous winners, Logan Elm (2009 & 2010), placed third. They got a 14 percent vote. The winning band last year, Paint Valley High, led the first performance. Other bands that went to the competition were Circleville, Chillicothe, Adena, Huntington, Southeastern and Zane Trace. Congratulations All Westfall band members!!! Volley for the Cure By: Ryan Cline Come out and support the volleyball team in their volley for the cure. This event will be held on September 27, They will be playing the Southeastern panthers in volley for the cure. The junior varsity team will be playing first at 5:00 p.m. After the game, the varsity will play. There will be no charge for senior citizens to get into the game. Students will be charged $2.00 to get into the game. You can buy your tickets from any high school volleyball players.
3 Volume 1, Issue 4 Page 3 Mr. Breyer Interview By: Kayla Brown Mr. Breyer is one of the four new teachers here at the high school, and is an Intervention Specialist. He is also the middle school football coach. Breyer attended college at The University of Michigan and earned a degree as an Intervention Specialist. This is his sixth year teaching. He has also taught at FCI Academy and Old Redford Academy in Detroit, Michigan. Some of his interests are football and wrestling. In high school, he played football, basketball, and baseball. He also wrestled in college. He is a pretty laid back guy and he likes country music. Join Swing Choir By: Ally Tracy Swing choir is a fun way to spend a class period. If you like to sing, this is a great class for you to think about joining. Also, if you like dancing, swing choir can provide a whole 42 minutes for you to dance. Swing choir, also known as show choir, is a class that you audition for. Throughout the year, you will learn multiple dances and songs that you perform, not only at school concerts, but also at Night of Harmony. Night of Harmony is a concert at Teays Valley s High School where all of the county schools come to perform their show choir show. There are no awards, but it is a very fun night and you also get to meet other students from different schools who participate in things you do, like Show Choir. Besides Night of Harmony, you also perform your Christmas show for all three Westfall Schools. It is an all-day event that is a lot of fun. So, if you like singing and dancing you should consider auditioning for Swing Choir next year. Bullying By: Megan Johnson Many of you know or have known of someone who is a bully or has been bullied. I know many of you get tired of hearing about this subject, but hardly any of us are taking action to lesson or prevent bullying in this school and in general. Taking pictures, posting videos online and doing nothing about it, is just as bad as doing the horrid acts done to another person or other people. Don t be afraid to stand up and speak out against bullying. Ask yourself this: Would you rather sit around like a chicken, too self-absorbed to bother to help, or would you rather help someone in need and possibly save a life or two? Many people every year, believe it or not, become depressed and sometimes suicidal; some sadly are successful just because they were pushed around or made fun of. No one likes to be bullied, so why bully others? Whether you are insecure or hurt in one way or another you shouldn t have to feel the need to hurt those around you. There are better ways to cope with your sadness and pain. Don t be afraid to tell someone what you have or are currently going through; if you will come, help will be there. Take the stand today, time to say enough is enough, no more of this nonsense, the bullying stops right here right now! It s now or never to take your chance to get the respect and peace you deserve from other people and students. I know I don t want to feel unsafe in a place that is supposed to be safe. Keep the pledge to keep Westfall a fun and safe place to be. Do it for the sake of others around you and yourself.
4 Volume 1, Issue 4 Page 4 Reasons to Join Cross Country By: Morgan Moon I think cross country is one of the most, if not the most, physically and mentally demanding sport. It s also one of the top calorie burning sports. It actually speeds up your metabolism for a whole 42 hours after you run. It s a very cheap sport to play and practice. All you need is a good pair of shoes and a destination. Cross Country teaches you to push yourself out of your comfort zone and also teaches determination. Cross Country is also a life time sport. It can go from middle school to the college level. Even after that you can still join clubs and run 5K s as much as you want through your adult life. The running community is also a very social community, unlike other sports; most runners actually socialize and hang out with other schools and competitors. Cross Country is one of the few sports that are an individual and team sport. So you individually have to push yourself and this leads to the improvement of your team. Cross Country is a very nature involved sport. Running miles in a wooded area is a weekly, if not more, activity for us. Also, it s a very good stress reliever and this helps with the hectic school environment. It is a very demanding sport though, you have to practice almost all year round and the season is also very long. Our practices are Monday-Friday and we have meets every Saturday and sometimes Tuesday or Thursday also. We also run about six miles at practice every day, but this becomes a habit and actually becomes a very relaxing routine. Hunting By: Ryan Cline Who s ready for deer season? It is one of the most fun times of the year. Deer season comes in at the end of September. Before you get ready to go out and kill that trophy buck, you better make sure that you have all of the proper materials to do so. First, you will have to make sure that you have your hunting licenses and tags, which they sell at Walmart and many other places as well. Next, you better make sure that you check to see if your gun/bow is sighted in properly. After you do that, all that you need is hunting clothes and a bright orange vest so other hunters can see you, but you only need one during gun season. sighted in properly. After you do that, all that you need is hunting clothes and a bright orange vest so other hunters can see you, but you only need one during gun season. Senator Bob Peterson at Westfall High School By: Natasha Mumford Bob Peterson, representative of the 85 district, also a Graduate of the Ohio State University, spoke recently to our FFA members and to all of the student council members. Some basic things he went over with them were: welfare, fiscal issues, and upcoming issues (new farm bills). The FFA members and the student council members ate lunch with him after he spoke.
