2 Highlander Cheerleader Contract The cheerleading program is governed by the same general policies and regulations as the athletic program set forth in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District Athletic Handbook. The cheerleader s primary purpose is to support athletic events and facilitate school spirit. Please keep in mind the importance of the obligation that you have made to devote your time and efforts to cheerleading. I. Purpose II. Academics A. A cheerleader s first responsibility is to her academic program. The educational process should not be compromised by participation in cheerleading. B. Each member of the squad has the responsibility to uphold, reflect and to project the goals and ideals of your school, Athletic Department, and the school district. A. Cheerleaders will abide by the Eligibility Rules in the athletic handbook. B. All cheerleaders must be passing their 4 core classes (Math, Science, Social Studies, English) with a 60% in order to be eligible to cheer. Athletic Director will contact coaches each week about grades. C. If a cheerleader becomes academically ineligible, they are to meet all grade requirements before participating in any cheerleading events. III. Attendance ** Being part of the cheerleading team is learning good time management skills!! ** A. Tardiness: a) Being on time is MANDATORY! This means being fully dressed and groomed and ready to begin practices and games. (If you need to change you will be considered late!) b) Being late WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. It s your responsibility to leave early enough to make it on time to practices and games. (Unless an emergency arises). If you are late, even one minute, you must call. c) Three late arrivals or early leaves will result in ONE unexcused absence and could lead to suspension with possible dismissal. d) CALL THE COACH if you are running late. She will then determine whether the case of lateness is legitimate. If it is, the lateness will be excused. Calling a teammate is not a substitute for calling the coach! e) If you are more than 15 minutes late to a practice or game for any reason not known by the coach, it counts as ONE unexcused absence. B. Attendance: a) Schedules will be distributed each month in calendar form by your coach. Keep in mind that situations can change and schedules may be altered. b) If a cheerleader is not in school for at least ½ day, she is not permitted to practice or cheer that day. Excessive absence from school will lead to suspension with a possible dismissal. c) Excused absences include a doctor s appointment with a doctor s excuse, death in the family, illness (phone call required), or religious holiday with a note, one DOCUMENTED college visit per senior. All appointments should be forwarded to the coach in writing for approval one day after the schedule is distributed. d) One unexcused absence will result in a one game suspension. Three unexcused absences will lead to dismissal. Ex: attending school and missing practice, excessive vacations during the school year, all star cheerleading, dance, work, homework. e) Due to safety issues, if you miss a practice before a game, you WILL NOT cheer at the game. f) You must attend ALL practice and games, even if you are injured or unable to cheer. g) Any unexcused absences (practice or games) will result in NOT lettering for that season h) Cheerleaders will ride the bus to and from any game or match unless noted from Athletic Office i) Your responsibility to the team is not fulfilled until the completion of the last game of your season. Whether this during the REGULAR OR PLAYOFF SEASON (girls or boys- VARSITY ONLY).

3 IV. Behavior A. Respect all rules and school policies and exemplify manners of good sportsmanship. B. If you are placed in detention, ISS, social probation, you may not attend practice or cheer until that obligation has been met. This absence will be considered unexcused. C. All cheerleaders MUST treat each other and the coach with respect. D. If a cheerleader is disrespectful to a teammate at a practice or game, the coach will deem a punishment at her discretion. *Talking about a teammate behind her back WILL BE considered an act of disrespect. NO FORM of disrespect will be tolerated and if deemed present it may result in a suspension with possible dismissal from the squad. E. If a cheerleader or a cheer parent is disrespectful to the coach, she has the potential to be dismissed from the team. Questioning the coach s decision making is a form of disrespect. If a parent needs to speak to a coach it CAN NOT be at an event and must be dealt with outside of the team being present (24 hour cooling off period). F. If a cheerleader is removed from the team or quits during the season, they are NOT permitted to try out the following year. G. No cheerleader may practice, stunt, or tumble without a coach being present. H. NO CELL PHONES will be used at practice or games unless there is an emergency situation. I. ALL PRACTICES ARE CLOSED, NO PARENTS OR VISITORS! V. Uniform A. Appearance should be neat and clean at all times (washing instructions will be provided) B. You will be responsible for ALL uniform pieces issued to you. If not returned at the end of the season you are responsible for the cost. C. ABSOLUTELY NO jewelry of any kind should be worn to practice or games! (All body piercings should be removed for practice or games.) D. Hair must be half-up or pulled back off of the face with a bow. E. Cheerleading uniforms must be clean and wrinkle free for all games. VI. Concussions/ Serious Injuries A. Baseline concussion testing is encouraged for all our NEW and RETURNING cheerleaders. (Boosters will reimburse any NEW cheerleaders fee up to $25). B. If you receive a concussion or serious injury during the season, you WILL NOT be permitted to return to cheerleading until a doctors script has been presented to a coach and the high school training staff indicating their clearance. C. Any restrictions placed on a cheerleader from a doctor will take place until noted otherwise. D. Any practices or games missed due to an injury WILL NOT be considered unexcused absences. E. If you are attending a game with an injury, you are to dress in team warm ups and sit with your coach not directly with the team. VII. Competitive Cheerleading (HS Level ONLY) Details to be determined once all cheerleaders have made a BHS cheerleading squad; informational meeting to follow. This year s competition squad will consist of 9-12 graders. A mat team of cheerleaders and 4-5 additional ALTERNATES (gameday) will be chosen at a later date. This team will compete at the local level, state level, and national level if qualified. Cost will be additional to upfront season costs. If for any reason a cheerleader on the competition squad is placed on academic or social probation they will be removed from any routines and placed as an immediate alternate to no longer compete. All competition cheerleaders MUST attend choreography All competition cheerleaders WILL letter for the season due to competing at the Varsity level (10 th graders and below, 11 & 12 automatically letter for being on Varsity) This team will hold open gyms during the summer and 2 day a week practices during the regular season
