1 Lanphier High School Pom Pons Tryout Information and Forms Clinics: Thursday, May 7 th and Friday, May 8 th 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tryouts: Saturday, May 9 th 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

2 Pom Pon Information Lanphier High School This information packet has been prepared to provide you with information that you will need to better understand the Pom program and what is expected of you, should you be selected as a member of the Pom squad. This tryout application is also available for download at PARENTS AND CANDIDATES PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY!! 1. TRY-OUT CLINICS There will be two clinics held on Thursday, May 7 th and Friday May 8 th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Attendance at this clinic is mandatory. If you have a conflict due to another sport, please contact Ms. Kelly Newman at or Ms. Sharon Williams at immediately. Clinics will be held in the gym. All forms must be completed and turned in to Ms. Newman or Ms. Williams at the beginning of the first clinic on Thursday, May 7, or you will not be allowed to participate in the clinics. All candidates will learn a short routine, as well as the routine to the school song. Candidates will also be required to demonstrate proper techniques for full turns, jumps and splits. Attached is a checklist to help you prepare for the clinics. 2. TRY-OUTS Try-outs will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 th in the gym. Each candidate will tryout to the same short routine and school song routine. They will be judged on their knowledge of the routine and skill, as well as crowd appeal. Tryouts will be judged by qualified coaches and expert dancers. A list of those who made the squad will be posted outside the Main Office and on the website by Monday, May 11 th at 7:45am. 3. PRACTICE/GAME SCHEDULE Poms Season (September through February) Practice will be three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Practice times are subject to change at any given time. The team will be notified in advance of any time changes to the practice schedule. Additional practices may be added from time to time, as the team feels needed. Poms will be performing at all home varsity football games during the fall. Poms will perform at all home boys varsity basketball games. Poms will also compete in several competitions during the school year. Attendance at ALL practices, games, and competition are mandatory, unless excused by one of the coaches. 4. UDA SUMMER CAMP

3 All selected poms will be required to attend the Universal Dance Association summer dance camp. UDA Summer Camp is $289 per pom pon girl. Each member of the team is required to pay half of her camp fee, which is $ Camp will be July 31 to August 3 at Eastern Illinois University. A $50 deposit is due by Saturday, May 16 th (our first meeting) to secure the squad s spot at the camp. The remainder of the money will be due June 10 th. The squad is required to perform a routine on the first day of camp. Practices for camp will begin on Monday, June 1. We will practice Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays until we leave for camp. Practices will be added as they are needed. Time will be determined at a later date. It is highly recommended that all money be paid in full BEFORE June 10 th. However, I have a payment plan option that girls can adhere to. Summer Camp Payment Plan Option: May 16, $50 (MANDATORY Deposit) May 30, $47.25 June 10, $47.25 Camp Clothes At LHS we pride ourselves is school spirit and unity. It is mandatory that the team show unity throughout the duration of camp. LHS pom girls are required to wear matching camp outfits. LHS choose to wear matching camp outfits because it makes us feel more like a team. It also distinguish ourselves in a large crowd. The estimated cost of camp clothes is $150. This includes 3 tops, 3 bottoms. 5. OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS A Mandatory meeting for all selected poms will take place on Monday, May 11 th from 5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. to discuss practice and game schedules, camp, competitions, expectations of poms and to get acquainted. We will also be electing captain and cocaptain at that time. 6. CODE OF CONDUCT Once you are selected to be part of the Lanphier High School Pom Squad, you will receive a contract of conduct and must agree to follow all rules set forth by Lanphier High School and the LHS Pom Squad. You must be in accordance with the expectations of all participants in an extra-curricular activity in regards to attendance and grade eligibility. You must be considered to be sports eligible and have good attendance in order to participate in poms! Also, the code of conduct is in effect twelve months of the year, seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, in AND out of season, and on and off school grounds. An individual participating in an extra-curricular activity will face appropriate disciplinary consequences for violating each code. 7. COST As described below, the Poms will be participating in a variety of fundraisers to help financially support the squad. However, there will be some costs that incur, that each pom participant will be responsible for, including, but not limited to uniform accessories (undergarments and dance shoes), and camp. The total cost for all members is approximately $200. This price includes the purchase of each member s shoes, socks, briefs, midriffs, and poms. Uniforms will be provided to each squad

4 member. Additional items may be added as decided upon by the squad. Breakdown of Cost (Items purchased through Varsity): Split-Sole Jazz Shoe (Black) - $32.95 Asics Classic Leather (White) - $47.00 Midriff Bodysuit - $20.95 Brief (2 pair) - $8.95/each Duffle Bag - $24.95 Poms (Metallic) - $20.75/each (priced at most expensive poms, subject to change) Socks (3 pair) - $5.95 Special Proformances Being a member of LHS poms, we pride ourselves in showmanship. Two times a year LHS pom pons is allowed to perform in an approved school uniform to showcase their creativity and personality as a team. Members of the LHS poms will be allowed to keep their outfits that they perform in after the performance. I have outlined the pricing for each event. This is subject to change, with prior notice. Homecoming - $75 (top, bottoms, accessories) City Tournment - $75 (top, bottoms, accessories) 8. FUNDRAISING Every squad member will have to participate in all fundraiser activities throughout the summer and school year. This money will go towards competition fees and squad clothing. Fundraising will consist of, but not limited to: Car washes Bake sales Spaghetti Dinners Yard Sales 9. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parent support is vital to the success of any team! As we head into our third year as an organized sport, it continues to be very important in setting the standard for the success of the program for years to come!! We hope to develop a strong pom family between members, their parents and the coaches! Parents are encouraged to attend all games and assist in fundraising activities at the request of the sponsors. 5 Form 1 of 5 Permission form for Pom Pon Tryouts All candidates must bring all four forms completed to the first night of clinics on Thursday,May 7th. My child, has my permission to be on the pom squad at Lanphier High School. I understand that she must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the IHSA, the pom coaches and the extra-circular activities code of ethics for LHS as stated in the District 186 District Policy handbook. I understand that poms have a demanding schedule and that my child must be present at all practices and games set by the pom coaches. I understand that my child is responsible for keeping up with their academic responsibilities as well. I understand that the violation of any rules or commitments may lead to temporary or permanent suspension from the squad. I understand that all forms attached must be turned in on the first night of clinics, Thursday, May 7 th or my child will not be allowed to tryout. I understand that my child must attend all clinics (unless excused by one of the coaches) or my child will not be considered for a position on the squad. I understand that my child will be evaluated by qualified judges and coaches, and we agree to abide by the decision of these individuals. I understand that poms has costs as discussed at the tryout meeting including, but not limited to, pom shoes, socks and briefs, as well as costs needed to participate in summer camp and competitions. I understand that the pom season runs from September through February and that other activities during this time will be very limited. I understand by the very nature of the activity that poms and dancing carry a risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the participant and the coaches may be, that risk cannot be eliminated. The risk of injury may include; muscle pulls, sprains, dislocation and broken bones. I understand these risks and will not hold Lanphier High School or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time. If selected, I promise to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the coaches and LHS. I promise to cooperate and follow the instructions of the captains and coaches. I understand that ALL practices and games, as well as competition and camp are mandatory. Please do not give this back to the student. Please return to Ms. Kelly Newman by Friday, May 7 th. It is the student s responsibility to ensure you have done so by this date. 8 FORM 5 of 5 Pom Pon Rules/Regulations The following are rules and regulations that LHS Poms will follow while they are on the Pom squad. These rules and regulations are over and above the rules that all students will follow from the Code of Conduct handbook. The undersigned does agree to comply with the following expectations that have been established for LHS Pom Pon Squad. Practices: 1. There will be at least three practices a week from September February. Poms are expected to be at each practice session. After three unexcused absences, a Pom will be dismissed from the squad. 2. Practices will begin promptly at 5:00 pm in the commons unless otherwise previously stated. Poms will wear appropriate clothing and proper, tied gym or dance shoes to practice. NO jewelry will be allowed at any time. 3. Practice is for Poms only. 4. Poms will be allowed an excused absence for the following situations: Absent from school due to illness or school related activity. Left school with school approval (illness, etc.). Parent note PRIOR to practice session. 5. Weekly grade eligibility reports will be monitored throughout the season. If a Pom is ineligible, arrangements will be made to work on assignments at practice. Three consecutive weeks of ineligibility for academic classes will result in a conference with the student and parent to discuss their immediate future with the Pom Pon squad. 6. A missed practice (excused or unexcused) may result in not being able to participate in the next performance. 7. An out of school suspension will result in being suspended from the next performance. Games/Competitions: 1. Poms will attend ALL scheduled games and/or competitions throughout our season (October-February). 2. Poms who are absent from school due to illness will not perform for that night s game. Absence due to school activity will not be included. If a Pom misses a Friday game, she will be expected to attend a Saturday game/competition unless a call is made to a coach, before hand. 3. If a Pom is ill or an emergency does arise, it is their responsibility to call a coach and/or school to leave a message. If the coach(s) and/or school is not contacted prior, an UNEXCUSED absence will be given. If an UNEXCUSED absence does occur, the first offense will have a one game suspension where the Pom will be expected to attend game and sit in bleachers by team/coach and a conference will occur. If 3 UNEXCUSED absences occur, dismissal from the squad will occur.

9 4. If a Pom is medically excused from physical education classes, they will be ineligible to perform at games, but must attend practice until medical approval is given. 5. Poms will be expected to wear uniforms and/or approved clothing items to school on performance days. 6. Poms are to arrive at home games at approved times set by coach. This will normally be 30 minutes prior to start of varsity game. This will be used to stretch and run through the routine. Being late will result in an UNEXCUSED absence, unless prior approval has been given. Poms are expected to show up in full uniform, hair COMPLETELY up and out of face (no wispy!), all jewelry off. 7. The squad will be required to sit together during the game and assist in promoting school spirit. Time will be allowed in the second quarter for Poms to prepare for their performance. Proper behavior will be required at all times. 8. All school issued uniforms and/or equipment shall be returned within seven days following the last performance. Missing school issued uniforms/equipment will be paid for by that Pom. Uniforms should not be pinned or altered in ANY way. I Agree to: 1. follow the rules of the Code of Conduct set by Springfield School District 186 and ISHA 2. not engage in any offense that would result in a suspension 3. not have any drug, alcohol, or tobacco violations 4. act in a leadership capacity, including appropriate use of school records, and to set an example of responsible behavior and school spirit 5. attend ALL practices, games, and competitions at their scheduled times 6. I understand that three UNEXCUSED absences from practice will result in my dismissal from the squad 7. I understand that being suspended for more than three performances will result in my dismissal from the squad I understand and agree to the above rules and regulations for the LHS Pom Pon squad. 10 Pom Clinic/Tryout Checklist 1. Keep hair off shoulders at all times. 2. Please wear appropriate form fitting dance clothes and appropriate gym shoes. 3. No eating or gum chewing is permitted. 4. ABSOLUTELY NO JEWELRY! (i.e., piercing, rings, watchers, bracelets, etc.) 5. For tryout day, please wear black pants/shorts, a solid white top, and appropriate gym shoes. Hair should be neat and away from face with all whispys sprayed back. 6. Bring water bottles if you wish. 7. Come prepared to work, learn, and enjoy! Good Luck!
