2 2017 Basketball Tryouts Tryouts can be a stressful time for both players and parents. To help you and your player understand the process, we have done our best to outline it here. In this guide, you will find information that may be helpful regarding what to do before the tryouts, what happens during tryouts and what to expect when the process is complete. Our best advice to parents is to tell your players to try their hardest but to relax and have fun too. Basketball Tryouts Before Make sure to register. The deadline for registration for Travel Tryouts is Monday 9/19. Walk up registration will not be accepted. Travel tryout dates Travel tryouts will be conducted on consecutive Sundays - September 24th and October 1st. The tryout session for each grade will last 1 hour 45 minutes. Time slots for each grade will be posted on the WBBA website at the time registration opens. We have consulted with other Plymouth/Wayzata sports associations Wayzata Football, PW Baseball and Fusion Soccer. All are aware of our plan. Every effort will be made to avoid conflicts with other events but some may be unavoidable. We will work to resolve these on a case by case basis. Be sure to mark your calendars for your players evaluation time! What should players and families expect? All players who want to play on a WBBA Travel Team will be required to attend both tryout sessions. Travel tryouts will take place over a two-day period in which players will run through a variety of basketball drills and scrimmages. Independent evaluators will be used at all sessions. The evaluators (many of them former college players) have a deep understanding of the game and the skills required of successful players and teams. The program s goal is to be fair and impartial by placing players based on skill level, ability, attitude and athleticism. 2 P a g e
3 All grades 4 th 8 th will each have an A, B and two parity C teams. Depending on the number of registrants at each grade level, there likely will be cuts. Players who are cut would then be able to play on a House (4 th and 5 th grade) or Southwest (6 th 8 th grade) team. What do I do if I am too sick or injured to participate in tryouts? If a player is unable to participate due to illness or injury the parent or guardian of the player must contact the Travel Director, Joe Grubesic, before the first tryout session. Players who have registered for tryouts and are not able participate will be excused for that illness or injury upon submitting a doctor's note describing the player's limitations. The placement of players who are unable to participate will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Basketball Tryouts During What do I need to know about the day of tryouts? You should arrive minutes prior to the first session as the player will need to check in, receive a numbered pinnie, and to get sized for a uniform. All players should wear shorts, t-shirts and basketball shoes. Players should not wear uniforms from previous years or t-shirts with their names on them. A numbered pinnie will be provided upon check-in. Once checked in, players may need to wait in the hallway before their session begins- please ask them to be patient. Tryouts are closed to parents and all adults except for the evaluators. The evaluators and players need to need to focus on the task at hand; having spectators is distracting to both parties. It is important that we let them do the job they came to do. Parents that do not respect this rule may cause their player to be removed from the process. WBBA thanks you in advance for your cooperation. How will players be evaluated? Independent evaluators will score your son based on how he performs in individual skills, basketball drills and team scrimmage situations. On Day 1 players will participate in a set of drills designed to assess their skill level and small set of scrimmages. On Day 2 players will again participate in drills and can expect to be divided into groups for scrimmaging. Shooting - Form, mechanics, lay-ups, range, accuracy, catch and shoot. Dribbling Ability to use both hands see floor while dribbling, dribble under pressure, protect ball, speed, change of direction. 3 P a g e
4 Passing - Form, velocity, control, proper passing and catching of passes. Defense (viewed via 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5) on the ball defense, help defense, footwork, stance, positioning, close out, aggressiveness without fouling, anticipation, deny defense, hustles back on defense, blocking out, blocking shots, rebounding. Offense Good decisions, court vision, passes to open player, triple threat position, shooting, faking, ball handling, penetration, shooting, scoring, movement off the ball, setting screens. Intangibles Positive attitude, aggressiveness, hustles/plays hard, speed, quickness, team play, strength, size. Your son will receive a numerical score as a result of individual skills, basketball drills and scrimmage situations. These scores are the predominant factor used in making team selections. Your son is required to attend BOTH tryouts sessions for their grade level. Team Placement The selection committee will utilize the scores from the evaluations and the input of the evaluators to place the teams. Year-end evaluations from the prior season will be used as part of the team placement process but primary emphasis will be placed on the current year evaluation. Unless impacted by the terms of the injury and illness policy, the following are the team sizes per grade: A - 9 players; B - 9 players; C 10 players. Basketball Tryouts After How do I find out what team my son is on? After team selections are complete, you will be able to check the WBBA website to find your team assignment for the season. The results will be posted approximately one-week after tryouts on the WBBA travel website. 4 P a g e
5 What if I have questions about the process? Questions or concerns about the tryout process should be directed to a member of the WBBA Board or Travel Basketball Committee. Please do not raise questions directly to the travel coaches or evaluators. We understand that the outcome of tryouts might not always be what the parent or the player had hoped for. However selections will be made in accordance with the Wayzata tryout policy and are final. What if we don t accept this placement? Can my son play House or Southwest instead? If you turn down your travel team position, you will not be allowed to transfer to House or Southwest. This is disruptive and unfair to the team you were placed on. Earning a spot on the WBBA Travel team is a privilege that unfortunately not everyone is awarded. What if my son is not selected for a travel team? Players who are not selected to play travel basketball will be eligible to play in the House or Southwest leagues. If the player opts to play in the House or SW league, the difference in program fees will be refunded. These players may be asked to participate in the evaluations for those programs. Thank you for being involved in our basketball community. Please contact us with any questions you may have. 5 P a g e
