And whle these students are stll tryng to fnd out where the Madson County Lbrary s, the lbrary s strugglng to keep from havng to close ts doors. The lbrary, located n the old yellow brck buldng next to the Rchmond Cty Park, has been fghtng for over a year to establsh a taxng dstrct n Madson County to support the publc lbrary. Wthout the tax, Lbrary Drector Rchard Murray sad the lbrary wll not have suffcent funds to reman open past September. 'Frends of the Lbrary," a local ctzens group, began the campagn to obtan a lbrary taxng dstrct n September 1979 by crculatng a petton. A commttee dealng wth the evaluatons met Feb. 3 to (gmm problems the musc department had brought up. The commttee's report sad that under the present evaluaton procedure some musc faculty are beng evaluated extensvely whle others are not beng evaluated at all. The procedure states that evaluatons must be conducted once a semester n courses wth fve or more students. Some musc nstructors teach only prvate lessons; therefore they meet (See LBRARY, Page 5) only one student at a tme and are not evaluated. Ursel Boyd's busy lfe full of turbulent years n world By ALCE OSBOURN The lfe of Dr. Ursel Boyd has been one that most people only dream of or read about n fcton novels. She grew up n Germany durng the turbulent years that saw the rse and fall of the nfamous Adolph Htler. As an mmgrant, she dscovered the "New World" of Amerca all over agan. Among her personal frends, she counts the late track superstar of the 1936 Olympcs, Jesse Owens. She s a woman who possesses a lfetme of such extraordnary experences Today, Boyd s an nstructor of foregn languages here. Her strong voce, rch wth German accent, flled her small, cozy offce as she recalled her past. She s an artculate person wth an easy gracefulness and a nose for poltcs and world affars. These nterests stem from the experence of growng up n a tme whan the Naz Ky's deology frst xk form and tned. Born n Berln n 1921, Boyd remembers Htler's ascent to power and eventual catastrophc crash. As a member of one of the many youth groups that young Germans were encouraged to jon, she was n the thck of wartme actvtes. However, she was merely a teenaged grl whose nterest lay more n boys and clothes than n the latest polces of the Fuhrer Lookng back, Boyd sad she now belves that some Germans were compelled to follow Htler because "dctators must have certan outstandng qualtes that mpress the average person," ncludng purty, smplcty and eschewng lquor and women. "Htler certanly possassed these," she sad. Boyd scoffs at rumors that Htler may stll be alve She fervently beleves that he ded n the fnal days of the Thrd Rech. "When Germany was gone. Htler was gone," she sad. At the s odd War, a new chapter opened up n Boyd's lfe Aganst bar parents wshes, she mmgrated to the Unted States wth Oolte Jerry Boyd, an Amercan who bad marred her n tso. " would have gone wth hm to the The commttee recommended the evaluaton procedure be modfed to nclude evaluaton of those nstructors. Also n a report, an Ad Hoc commttee, whch was formed n October. 1980, to study problems and alternatves to the questonnares students use to evaluate faculty, decded t couldn't do ts job. The commttee's report sad that some of the Unversty's colleges are already changng the evaluaton forms - a job assgned n Aprl, 1978, to the ndvdual colleges. t also stated that the oversght commttee supervses the use of the evaluatons and makes recommendatons for changes. The commttee recommended that remanng colleges set up commttees to update the evaluatons, that gudelnes concernng the use of the (See SENATE, Page 3) North Pole or Sbera," she sad and added that her famly felt the Unted States was as bad as ether of these places. The young brde quckly dscovered the msconceptons she had about ths country. Through European propaganda, she had always heard that Amercan women lved the easy lfe, pampered constantly by ther adorng husbands. Her new n-laws taught her otherwse, she sad. "Here expected my husband to carry me around and ended up cannng peaches for the frst three weeks after my arrval," she laughed. But Dr. Boyd's husband had bgger thngs n mnd for her than cannng Catches. He encouraged her to earn a w degree and later a PhD n contemporary German lterature. She was reluctant to return to school after fnshng rgorous studes n Europe but fnally relented. Beng the only woman n her law school, an mmgrant wth a heavy (See BOYD, Page 3) Donors ad success of excellence fund By ROBN PATER Edtor Lesle Anderson, the only survvng member of the Unversty's frst graduatng class of 1909 s one So s an agrculture major from the Unversty's most recent graduatng class of 1980 And TV producer of such ht shows as "Happy Days." "Laverne and Shrley" and "Mork and Mndy" Garry Marshall s also one. These three men are all Fellows -- members of the organzaton n the top level of gvng for the newly-ntated Margn for Excellence Fund. Begun n November, 1980, the Margn for Excellence Fund s a prvate gfts program, wth ts funds to be used for recognzng excellence n teachng. endowng dstngushed professorshps, enhancng educatonal facltes, underwrtng certan academc programs and begnnng a student honors program here. Currently, between 40 and 50 persons representng all aspects of the communty - n busness, medcne, bankng, law and ndustry - have already made a commtment to the fund n all of the varous levels of gvng and optons that are offered. Besdes the top gvng level, Fellows, for a commtment of $10,000 or more, donors may opt to become: EKU Assocates for donatons between $5,000 and $9,999. EKU Patrons for donatons between $250 and $490 annually; members of the Century Club for gfts between $100 and $249 annually: and Frends of Eastern for donatons of $50 to $99 annually. All gfts and prevous donatons to the EKU Foundaton may be appled toward hgher levels of gvng - somethng that makes the Unversty's program unque explaned Donald Feltncr. vce presdent for Publc Affars Also, donatons to the Margn for Excellence Fund may be made n a number of ways, such as through outrght cash gfts, combnaton gfts, through pledges that commt contrbutons over a perod of tme, or through deferred gfts, such as lfe nsurance polces or trust agreements. "We have about $400,000 pledged," Feltner estmated However, he explaned, t s hard to put a fnger on the exact amount that has been donated snce some of t has been commtted or deferred and s, therefore, not "cash n hand." "We've got nvested over $60,000. Every penny has been nvested and s collectng nterest," Feltner repled. Feltner and hs offce are currently workng on the fund wth no addtonal staffng and n ther spare tme. Eventually, as the program grows further. Feltner sad he beleves there wll be a need for a mnmal development staff to work on the fund. Wth just one formal announcement made by the offce of Publc nformaton, n November, Feltner commented that the program has "been receved as well or better than we'd expected. "The success of the program. thnk to ths pont. can be partally attrbuted to... the cooperaton and sncere efforts of our Fellows who have already sgned up," he contnued "The qualty of people who have expressed a desre to partcpate n the program s extremely hgh " (See FELLOWS. Page 14) Summer Sounds gro cancel summer performance By MARY ANN MCQUNN Arts Edtor The Summer Sounds, a sngng group sponsored every summer by the Kentucky Department of State Parks and Recreaton, wll not be performng ths year due to the reducton n funds allocated to that department. Accordng to last year's drector, Davd Wayne Greenlee, the program had been n exstence for seven years. Greenlee, drector of choral actvtes here at the Unversty, sad, "The musc students here wll lose an opportunty to hold a job as a professonal muscan - one of the goals that we strve for n ther musc educaton at Eastern." The majorty of the students nvolved n The Summer Sounds were from the Unversty. Greenlee added that there was one opportunty for 'the Summer Sounds to contnue the summer program ths year, but that the reductons were too severe for t to be feasble. Last year the students receved a salary of $1,602 for three months employment wth the students workng sx D., U4.0V aa,, fttma WsVlaVS. _.... *..... Pck'n'choose nghts a week A state vehcle was suppled for ther transportaton. Ths summer's salary was to have been the same wth the students workng three nghts a week plus beng avalable for wnter performances. Greenlee sad that they would have been n a poston where someone could call and say. "We want you to go to ths park.." and they would have to go n addton to beng on call for nne months out of the year, the students would have to pay for ther own transportaton Beth Bogan, who was n the Summer Sounds last year, sad the cancellaton of the program "upsets" her very much. Bogan added. "We brought n a lot of busness to the park 1 thnk they wll lose money." She sad that she feels that the program wll have to be renstated Greenlee stated that the program was more than just a holday job. "t was the experence that was nvolved," he sad The cancellaton of the Summer Sounds was not the only dsap- pontment that the musc department suffered ths semester. The Stephen Collns Foster Musc Camp, now n ts 46th season, has been nformed that t wll not be recevng any substantal ad from the Unversty for ths summer's camp. Dr. Robert Hartwell, drector of bands, sad, "We could not depend on any knd of assstance from the Unversty. t has forced us to rase the prces hgher than we mght have." The cost of the four-week camp wll be $475, whch s $87 hgher than last year Prvate lessons are $7 a sesson ths year as opposed to $5 last year Hartwell sad that the camp enrollment was down somewhat last year. He added that Morehead and Western were forced to cancel ther camps. AS for the recrutment value of (he camp, Hartwell cted tha( n 1979, 30 percent of the freshman musc class were n r Foster campers n percent of the freshman musc class were former Foster campers. 3 Ft** 2/Vol. 58/No 23 Th* EaMarn P op Edtoral Thuttdav. Fabnary 2S. 1M Senate proposals often useless, waste of tme The Student Assocaton s busy wth "proposal passng," an old pastme that has lately been useless, a waste of tme and a bt llogcal. Last week, the SA passed a proposal recommendng the current sprng semester be reduced three days and, n turn, make the sprng break three days longer or shorten the end of the semester. Ths proposal was, no doubt, prompted by pettons that were advertsed n the Progress by a group (unrelated to the SA) whch calls tself the "Commttee to Preserve nstructonal Stablty." The group's ad drew response from over 2,000 students who sgned the pettons. The group, as well as the SA, mantans that the semester should be shortened so that t conforms wth the fall semester. The SA proposal trys to ratonalze that equallng the number of days n both semesters wll lend tself more "nstructonal stablty" to classrooms. What the proposal fals to explan s how the reducton of three days from te sprng semester wll brng ths so-called stablty about. How much dfference can three days, more or less, brng? Surely students are capable of gettng through three more days of classess-after all, they're gettng more for ther money ths way. And, as of yet, faculty members have voced no dspleasure over the addtonal three days. Such an attempt wll prove useless. ( Lberalsm has also ht the SA wth the passng of a proposal allowng for students on socal probaton or undated suspenson to hold campus offces. "Pany." To he average student, especally at ths unversty that means, "to consume great quanttes of alcohol." The same phenomenon, known by many other names, s prevalent on campuses across the country as well as others. "And young people are ncreasngly turnng to alcohol as ther drug of choce," sad Dr. Morrs E. Chafetz, drector of the Natonal nsttute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholsm, n a December 1974 ntellect artcle by Wllam W. Brckman. He also reported that alcohol s a factor n one-half of all homcdes and one-thrd of all sucdes across the country. Accordng to Chafetz one-half of the prsoners n Amercan jals have alcohol-related problems. n recent dgests the problem of the drug alcohol n college students has been chroncled n studes and surveys. The Journal of College Student Personnel publshed n the May 1979 ssue an artcle by Fred E. Hll and Larry A. Bugn of the Unversty of Texas on the subject. They ponted out the change that occurs when a student goes away to college. Accordng to a survey conducted randomly of 162 males and 144 females at ther unversty, 18.5 percent of the males started drnkng after enrollng there. The same was true of 23.6 of the polled females. The largest percentage of the females, approxmately one-thrd, revealed that ther drnkng habts had ncreased. Surprsngly enough, however, 24.1 of the males polled reported that ther drnkng had decreased. The largest number of males was n the area of no change. These fgures would lead one to beleve that enterng college does make a tremendous dfference n a person's lfe style, especally females. The newfound freedom of most students who are lvng away from home for the frst extended length of tme often leads to the profuse use of alcohol. The old vllan, peer pressure, s n the past, these students were not allowed to hold offce n any campus organzatons except relgous organsatons. Ths proposal, as all others, wll go before Presdent J.C. Powell for hs approval or dsapproval. The SA mantans that dscplnary cases should not be desgned just a punshment but for the rehabltaton of students, as well. So, f the proposal s passed and goes nto effect, ths would mean, for example that a student on undated suspenson for possesson of frearms, theft, cheatng or plagarsm could hold an offce n any campus organzaton. The next presdent of the SA could be someone who has no respect for the Unversty rules and regulatons. And, for some reason the SA has altered the new draft of ts consttuton, revsng the secton concernng justces who serve on the Student Court. The draft orgnally requred justces to mantan a 2.5 GPA. The change proposed recently lowers the standards and requres only a 2.0 GPA of the justces. f anythng, the requrements for such a responsble and respectable poston on the Student Court should be stffened. The Consttuton Commttee tred to rase the GPA requrements, but was voted down by the Cabnet. One senator who must be exasperated by now after tryng, unsuccessfully, to get hs proposals passed by the senate, fnally qut hs postons on the SA Cabnet, whch s comprsed of the SA presdent, vce presdent and commttee heads. A Second Look Blly Mtchell sad he couldn't gan the support of the Cabnet because "they thought my proposals were too radcal and they wanted to stay on a conservatve plane." Perhaps a bt of radcalsm s just what the doctor ordered for the SA. Mtchell added that he prefers to submt proposals as "just a senator" from the floor, rather than as the charman of the Consttuton Commttee and the Commttee on Commttees. Perhaps one of the "hottest" proposals the SA has n the works rght now, although they felt t was too complcated a proposal to take mmedate acton on and tabled t for a week, was submtted by Senator Lllam Hacker. Hacker's proposal, whch was fnally passed and s now before the presdent, states that the speed bumps n Brockton are worn down and should be rased to three nches n heght. Ths type of "safe" proposal may be a reflecton of the knd of thngs the SA s capable of gettng approved. The SA needs to frst evaluate the lttle power they do possess and then decde how they can effectvely go on from there. Tuesday nght's not tem was a proposal, a bt on the unconventonal sde, presented by Mtchell, that called for the SA to change ts meetng place from the Kennamer Room of the Powell Buldng to the grll. Mtchell's proposal, of course, was voted down by hs fellow senators. Maybe the senator was just testng the Student Assocaton to see f they were awake. An alcohol affnty surely at work on the college student who s settng hs or her lfe style. Unfortunately, often four years of partyng just sn't enough and thus begn serous problems n the workng world. Rare s the college student who really has a severe drnkng problem. t s the later years that are to be serously worred about. Besdes the lastng effects on the drnker's body, t may leave lastng marks on other thngs, such as a grade pont average. n the Unversty of Texas survey, Hll and Bugn found that students wth a GPA drnk more often, n greater amounts and get ntoxcated more frequently than those wth a hgher GPA. Do they dnnk because they get lower grades or do they get lower grades because they drnk? That, my chldren, s the queston. Students wth lower GPA's seem to be more prone to "gettng wasted." Accordng to the same survey, almost 23 percent of those wth a GPA drnk four or more beers n a settng whle only 14 percent of the students wth a 3.0 or hgher drnk as much at once. The artcle also reports that they spoke of more frequent dstorton of vson and hearng, a more often nablty to concentrate and greater socalblty when they drnk as compared to students wth hgher GPAs. The consumng of alcohol has a drect relaton on the tendency of a student to attend class and as much as most students hate to admt t, n most classes attendance has a drect relaton on ther grade. n an artcle appearng n the January 1979 ssue of Journal of College Student Personnel C. Carney Strange and Marln R. Schmdt of the Unversty of owa reported that 12.9 percent of the students that they polled had cut class after drnkng n the past year. A large 27.2 percent of the polled students reported mssng a class because of a hangover, one of the dreaded sde effects of alcohol. That could mean a less than three-fourths attendance on any gven Monday.. Only 24.5 percent of these students, however, thought that they mght have a drnkng problem. The frequency ana amount of Marklta She>lb«rs* drnk seems to be the problem. n the Feb. 11, 1980 ssued of Macleans n an artcle by Carl Edgar Law a study by Kaser - Permanente Medcal Center n Oakland, Calf, reported that moderate alcohol users are 30 percent less lkely to have a heart attack than non-drnkers. The report contnues, however, for the beneft of those who tend to always have to be carred out of a bar, to say that "teetotallers" average 44 heart attacks per 1000 persons compared wth 30 per 1000 for moderate drnkers. Don't head downtown yet! The opposte s true for those who exceed the "moderate drnker" status. Yes, that does nclude those who have ther own monogramed barstool at several local establshments. Of the students questoned at Unversty of Texas, 19.4 percent sad that they regularly dnnk two to three tmes a week. A majorty of 68.6 percent reported drnkng occasonally." Two percent of the ndvduals sad that they drnk daly. n the January 1979 ssue of Journal of College Student Personnel the survey at the Unversty of owa revealed that 35 percent of the polled students had ever worred about the long term consequences of ther drnkng. Males seemed more worred about the stuaton wth 44.8 concerned whle only 24.4 females were concerned. The artcle cted the results of a random survey conducted by the NAAA n 1976 whch reported that percent of the people polled pcked alcohol as the drug of ther choce. The Unversty of owa survey ponted out the top few reasons gven by the students for ther use of alcohol. Headng the lst at 60.4 percent of the students was "to get hgh." Another bg reason cted at 50.2 percent was to releve fatgue or tenson. Seems a bt llogcal as the drug ncreases the heart rate and slows the responses. would be the last one to condemn partyng but one should be aware of the rsks and dangers. Over-partyng can be permanent. Everyone has a set of rules By PATRCK DYSON Guest Opnon "What s that racket?" demanded Mss Twtworthy, lookng up from the red-slashed papers that lttered her desk. She tapped rhythmcally wth her pencl as the poundng overhead contnued. "What s that nose?" she repeated. She glared at the celng as a lght ran of whte dust drfted down and settled on the bg red apple n front of her. Ths was followed by a pece of plaster whch rcocheted off her upturned nose and landed squarely n the mddle of Suse Smth's "What Dd Last Summer" report. Flckng the offendng chp to the floor, Mss Twtworthy slowly rose and for the fnal tme demanded to know the source of the dsturbance. A tentatve hand went up n the back of the room. " thnk," sad a small-voced Johnny Jones, " thnk t's Mr. Crumb, the jantor. thnk he's puttng up sgns." The poundng grew louder. "Sgns?" ntoned Mss Twtworthy. She placed both Letters Short memores To the Edtor, Mr. Rob Schawann's datrbe aganst Coach Ed Byhre n the Feb 19 edton of the Progress s a tmely remnder that fans have notorously short memores MM hands on the desk and leaned far forward. Johnny Jones tram bled. The poundng stopped. " thnk they're rules," he quavered. " thnk there are 10 of them. thnk we're supposed to follow them." He fell back n hs teat as Mss Twtworthy looked at hm cly. At that moment Mr. Crumb shuffled nto the room. He had a hammer n one hand and a large framed document under hs arm. "Commandments," he sad, noddng towards the frame. "Gotta put 'em up." He started for the rear wall but stopped when Mss Twtworthy stepped n front of hm. She drew herself up to her full heght. "Sgns? Roles? Commandments?" She glared down at Mr. Crumb. The hapless jantor nervously bt hs lower lp. "We don't need your rules to tell us what to do," she went on. The hammer shpped from the caretakers hand and ht the floor wth a thud. The sound echoed through the room. "So pck up your hammer," Let me therefore remnd hm that Mr. Byhre took over a dsastrous basketball program at the begnnng of the»7»-77 academc year and n bs thrd season won the conference champonshp, the OVC tournament and a berth n the NCAA playoffs. "f let Mr. Crumb put up hs commandments," she began, "how can say no to the next person who comes n here wth a set of rules." She looked at Johnny Jones. "How about your father? He probably has a set too. There are many sets of rules. t wouldn't be long before the walls were completely covered." " thnk t's best," she concluded, carefully brushng the whte powder off her apple, "that we each follow our own rules and let others do the same." More meals wanted To the Edtor, And to those students eatng on a meal plan and the drector of food servce. Ths past Monday was an observance of Washngton's brthday. n accordance wth ths holday, Clay Cafetera was closed. Martn Cafetera was dosed too; at least to those students not partcpatng n Eastern's varsty "ball" sports. We ask: s ths justfable? Keep n mnd that we have pad for the prvlege to eat two (or three) meals a day, fve (or seven) days a week for the sprng semester of We were never told that there would not be a cafetera open on Washngton's brthday. Nor were we gven a rebate for the cost of the meals we pad for and never receved. We fed t s necessary to treat students - all students - equally. We are not sayng that the varsty ball players do not have a rght to eat where they are enttled to. Boyd had gone to watch a "beau" who was nvolved n the equestran events but her attenton was soon rveted by Owens, "the most outstandng athlete of the games." The senate wll also consder at least four other recommendatons. An Ad Hoc commttee formed last May to revew the current polcy on faculty off-campus employment wll recommend the adopton of a new polcy. The new polcy states that a full-tme faculty member can have an outsde job as long as t doesn't nterfere wth hs job at the Unversty. The faculty member would have to get approval from the college dean, vce presdent for academc affars and the presdent before acceptng outsde work. The commttee also recommended mat only work equvalent to one work day per week - excludng Saturdays and Sundays - be cceptable. Occasonal lectures, servce on revew panels and servng as an expert wtness were cted as exceptons to the approval procedure. The senate wll consder a recommendaton that an opton n appled ecology be made avalable wthn the master of scence degree program. The proposal was submtted by the Department of Bologcal Scences n the College of Natural and Mathematcal Scences. t was approved on Feb. S by the Councl on Academc Affars. Accordng to the recommendaton, graduates wth master's degrees n bology and who are now workng n the envronmental scence area have ndcated that a program n appled can be heard chantng n roarng unson, "Owens, Owens, Owens." As for Htler's famous snub of the athlete, Boyd sad that her frend had confded that, "t made for good readng but t smply was not true." He repeated ths statement n an ntervew before hs death. A fnal rony n the story that Boyd fnds "tragc and hghly symbolc." s that Owens ded n the only year that Amerca has ever boycotted the Olympcs. She sad ths concdence deeply saddened her. There s a certan sparkle n Boyd's steel-blue eyes when she speaks of ths country. She sad she was and stll s, "most mpressed by Amercans and the Amercan way of lfe." "Amercans have the unque ablty to be self-crtcal, to lsten to other people's opnons, to accept generously deas from others and be wllng to adjust to these suggestons," she sad. She found an example of these attrbutes n a recent televson specal called "The Bunker," a dramatzaton of Htler's fnal days n power. Boyd sad that the dctator was portrayed "as a human beng although he certanly dd not demonstrate much humaneness." "Noother naton on earth would have been wllng to show such farness to a man lke Htler," she added. Students takng the three courses n appled ecology would be provded wth ecologcal theores and prncpals and would be gven experence n workng wth ecosystems. The establshment of a commttee on faculty rghts and responsbltes wll be proposed along wth an Ad Hoc commttee to study the proposal. The Ad Hoc commttee would help the senate n takng acton on the proposal. The UCFRR would handle the dsmssal of tenured faculty or faculty on specal or probatonary ap pontments, the release on non-tenured faculty and the complants of faculty members. t would consst of one tenured faculty from each college n the Unversty. The member would hold a poston below the department char and would be elected by the faculty' members of that college. A report from an Ad Hoc commttee on Faculty Emertus Status wll be presented to the senate. Faculty Emertus Status would be avalable to faculty members wh hold academc rank, have tenure status, have been wth the Unversty full-tme for at least 10 years and who have reached retrement age. Benefts of the status would nclude lbrary prvleges, parkng prvleges and lfetme passes to all Unversty events. The commttee, recommended that acton on the report - whch has been approved by the Councl on Academc Affars - be taken at the senate meetng n Aprl. Fabruary SA begns ratfcaton of new consttuton By BETTY MA.KN Newt. Edtor The Unversty Student Assocaton has begun work on ratfcaton of a new consttuton for the organsaton. The student government moved to suspend parlamentary procedures and open the floor for dscusson on the new consttuton Tuesday evenng. The preamble and artcle one of the consttuton were approved by the assocaton. Accordng to Blly Mtchell, charman of the Consttuton Commttee, the new consttuton dffers only slghtly from the current SA consttuton, however, one of the major changes concerns the name of the organzaton. The new consttuton states t s the lvng consttuton for the Unversty Student Government Assocaton. Presently, the organzaton s ttled the Unversty Student Assocaton, however, an SA proposal s currently beng consdered by Presdent J.C. Powell whch wll offcally change the name of SA to the Student Government Assocaton. Accordng to the proposal, the reasonng for the name change s to clarfy the role of the organzaton n ts name. After some dscusson, the senators voted to leave the organzaton's ttle n the consttuton as the Student Government Assocaton, unless Powell rejects the senator's proposal. The senate also approved several recommendatons and proposals. Two meal plan proposals whch wll mplement a two meals per day, seven days per week meal plan at Martn Cafetera and establsh an added meal plan faclty to accommodate students who have not been able to get on the meal plan were passed by the senate. The two proposals were prevously approved by men's and women's n terdormtory boards Head games tme of Hppocrates n ancent Greece through the Gospels, to Chrstan Scence and today's fath healng on TV. Yet research on psychosomatc healng s at least a generaton behnd that on psychosomatc dsease. One reason, of course, s the extensve corrupton of psychosomatc (or fath) healng by charlatans and "quacks." The cartoons of Rowlandson over a century ago and the careers of crooks lke Caglostro, Mesmer and Dr. "Goat Glands" Brnkley show what abuses have occurred. The whole dea has stunk for centures because of ths assocaton. Now, just n the past few years, research on psychosomatc healng has begun to really roll. When Jonathan Swft wrote Part V of "Gullver's Travels" he must have had Jules Vernlke foresght. He must have had a vson of some of the students at the Unversty before he possbly could have developed the brutsh Yahoo characters. For the uncvlzed nature of the Yahoos s strkngly smlar to that of many students on ths campus. Swft descrbed the Yahoos as odous, hary creatures who st around on ther haunches all day. "... The Yahoos, wth some appearance of cunnng and the strongest dsposton to mschef," he wrote, "were observed to be the most unteachable of all brutes." Why, 've seen students on ths campus who ft that descrpton! The Yahoos lve! Just check the latest avalable "College Plannng - Search Book" n the lbrary and you'll even fnd data to back up the asserton that Yahoos Colas Raymond JW.D Here are some examples: Varous skn dsorders, ncludng some caused by nfecton, are beng cured by psychotherapy and hypnoss. So here we have a specfc, clearly dentfed mechansm by whch the emotonal part of the bran can chemcally nfluence the cells of the body. The nsttute of Relgon and Health s lcensed by New York state as a psychatrc clnc. Our Turn Swft foresght really do nhabt the Unversty. Accordng to the book, the grade pont average (GPA) of frst-year students at the Unversty s a meager 2.0. The book lsts only fve schools n the entre country as havng lower frst-year GPA averages than the Unversty! And the book reveals that only sx out of every 10 frstyear students at the Unversty return as sophomores! Moreover, only three out of every 10 students at the Unversty obtan a degree! Why does the Unversty have such dubous dstncton? Because of the Yahoos! The same Yahoos who recently threw a dog down the trash chute from the 15th floor of a men's dormtory. The same Yahoos who hurl objects and nsults at passersby n the Dupree-Todd courtyard (otherwse known as the Valley of Armageddon). The same Yahoos who clmbed the campus water tower and spray-panted n- A resoluton statng that "a mnmum ncrease n tuton" be mplemented next fall was unanmously approved by the assocaton. The resoluton requests that the tuton ncrease be kept under the proposed hke of 10 to 12 percent. A copy of the resoluton wll be sent to Gov. John Y. Brown Jr. and several other state offcals and area newspapers. A second resoluton unanmously approved by the senate requests students to wrte ther congressmen and senators askng them to denounce any attempt to change or end the guaranteed loan program. The resolutons states a "sgnfcant number" of Unversty students wll not be able to afford the cost of a college educaton wthout the guaranteed student loans. A copy of the resoluton wll be sent to Presdent Ronald Reagan, Congressman Carl Perkns and other natonal and state offcals, as well as state and local newspapers. The copy of the resoluton sent to Perkns wll be accompaned by a letter thankng the congressman for hs efforts on the behalf of hgher educaton. The senate also agreed to requre all new senators to the assocaton to attend two specal orentaton meetngs to famlarze them wth parlamentary procedures and the functons of the assocaton. After some debate, a bll callng for the March 3 meetng of the Student Assocaton to be held n the Powell grll was not approved. The reasonng behnd the bll was to better famlarze students wth student government by makng SA meetngs more accessable to the average student, accordng to Mtchell. (See SHUTTLEBUS, Page S) Edtor's note: Dr. Raymond's death on Jan. 24 ended hs weekly column contrbutons to the Progress; however ths column, frst run n the Jan., 1979 ssue of the Progress, s repeated as a specal trbute to hm, one whose legacy of carng lves on. t has been gven a mllon dollars of tax money for research on fath healng. You beleve n ths and act on t or f you don't, you make some other knd of plan and act on that, he says. Perhaps there s a brdge between "fath healng" and ths belef system whch could be a bult-on part of bran functon. And the lst goes on, ncludng even some campus "atroctes" commttee by Yahooetes. Why do so many degenerate Yahoo and Yahooettes dwell at the Unversty? The answer s easy. Where else can a hgh school graduate go ana, have a warm place to lve, ha eat and have a recreaton am the state pc tab? cheap food to ess to lmtless ht lfe, whle p most of the n other wqfts, n a very real sense the Unversty s a mere extenson of the welfare state, takng n lazy ncorrgbles who aren't brave enough to enter the workng world. What can the non-yahoos do to extermnate the Yahoos? Absolutely nothng. That's why we'll have to resort to the clche, "f you can't beat 'em, jon "em." Yahoooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Whle only 3,100 sgnatures were needed to obtan the 51 percent, over 3700 sgnatures were on the petton. However, when the petton was submtted to the fscal court, the court sad the 51 percent fgure should be based on the 1979 electon fgures, nstead of even though the 1979 electon had not occurred untl after the petton had been crculatng for over a month. Because many more people voted n the 1979 governor electon than the 1978 electon, the fscal court decson would force the "Frends of the Lbrary" to recrculate the petton to gan the added sgnatures. The lbrary took the matter to Madson Crcut Court where Judge Ed Chenault ruled n favor of the fscal court decson. The Lbrary Board proceeded to regster an appeal wth the Kentucky Court of Appeals and t currently awats that decson. "Ths s a very unque case," Murray explaned. The bll was passed by the state legslature 29 to 6 the day before the sgnng. On that day, Feb. 25, 1966, Martn receved the call he had been watng for - askng hm' to be present for the sgnng. Accordng to an artcle n The Man Alumnus, sprng. 1966, the followng conversaton took place between Martn and the caller who nformed hm of the bll's approval: "Bob." the caller nformed, "the Governor would lke far the college, er, mean the unversty presdents to be n hs offce tomorrow mornng when he sgns the Ml nto law. Can yon make You bet can." he repled. Mnutes later, accordng to the magazne, sx long whstles sounded on campus, startlng students and faculty, who ddn't know whether they meant to change classes or that they were ar rad sgnals. The blasts were later sad to be sgnals of the bll's passage. Why sx whstles, no one knows -- or, at least, no one wll say why. t s rumored that the sx blasts stood for the sx dssentng votes on the bll, or they may have represented the sx decades Eastern had served the state as a college. The magazne went on to say, "To ths day, no one knows for sure because Dr. Martn only grns when asked about the sx whstles " The bll, n addton to changng the college's status, also recommended: that the Unversty expand ts graduate program, allowng master's to be awarded n areas other than n educaton; that the Unversty develop an approprate research and servce program, and that the Unversty retan and expand a comprehensve two-year communty college program Mexco trp planned The Unversty's Department of Foregn Languages s offerng ts annual travel study program n Mexco durng the Sprng ntersesson, May 11 through June S. They provde socety wth a break, a smle, a relef from the pressures of everyday lfe. People adore all of the great comedans: Johnny Carson, Rodney Danderfeld, Steve Martn, George Carln, BU Sacra. Bll Sacra? Bll Sacra, a successful, rsng star n the comc world, s a combnaton of every comedan magnable. He s of that rare breed - the mpressonst. He uses the art of mtaton to blend the comc style of other comedans wth an unque style all hs own. He departed Eastern Hgh School n Lousvlle as a senor to "fulfll a lfetme dream." When Sacra perfected hs frst mpresson, Rchard Nxon, at the young age of 11, he promsed hmself that he "would make t as an mpressonst'' Occasonally lapsng nto hs Rodney Dangerfeld "don't get no respect" routne. Sacra sad hs 10 years of nght club experence as a stand-up comc are a result of "total dedcaton." Hs career record upholds hs clam to experence convncngly. Sacra s vacatonng at hs home n Lousvlle after three years of performng n New York nght clubs. He has performed wth such "name" acts as Foster Brooks, Wayne Newton and Glda Radner, as well as performng the openng for a "Saturday Nght Lve" segment. Hs bggest task may have been a two-week stnt as the openng act for Rodney Dangerfeld at the Rodney Dangerfeld Club n New York. " manly went to New York to fnd out what my competton s lke, but made some valuable contacts as well," sad Sacra. Sacra's newest challenge wll be emceeng the Mss EKU Scholarshp Pageant hosted by the Sgma Alpha Epslon fraternty. The March 31 pageant, whch wll also nclude Daphne Cochran, the 960 Mss Kentucky, s somethng that he s "really lookng forward to." "Snce many of my frends go to Eastern, want to be good. The show wll be great, but nave got to do my Job rght," Sacra explaned. Sacra, a 23-year-old Boston natve, has mastered some 200 voces throughout hs relatvely young career,, ncludng varous cartoon characters such as Fred Flntstone and Barney Rubble. Practcng voce patterns, lstenng to tapes and watchng flms make hm the mpressonst he s today. Stll even wth qualty work, the most dffcult problem remans n "gettng yourself known." Hs experences nclude vocng commercals for televson, tapng cartoons for Saturday mornngs, performng n moves and portrayng characters for Hanna Barbara. Ths wde varety of work has broadened hs job possbltes greatly. Probably the most famous mpressonst of modem comedy s Rch Lttle. The reason for success of a comc lke Lttle s that he s totally commercal, accordng to Sacra. He can be put n any stuaton and stll "be accepted by the publc." A lfetme goal for Sacra s to star n hs own move and create a character unque to hmself, wthout the use of mtaton. Ths accomplshment would enable hm to break the mpressonst stereotype, whch seems to smolder a drve from wthn. " do not want to be a pece of modelng clay that someone else molds," Sacra exclamed. " want my own dentty." Snce comedans are put on the spot day n and day out, Sacra has to keep hs act sharp every nght. After so many years of practce, though, t becomes "automatc because busness s busness." He added that money s also an mportant factor n hs drve to success. "As long as am gettng pad, wll be funny all of the tme," he sad as he drfted slowly nto a Johnny Carson routne. Sacra wll be on campus March 30 to mx wth the students between classes and perform some of hs favorte mtatons: Johnny Carson, The Three Stooges, Rodney Dangerfeld, George Burns. Ths promoton s only a prelmnary to the pageant the followng nght at Brock Audtorum. He plans to move to Calforna n the near future, and he s scheduled to make a guest appearance on the Mke Douglas Show n June. On the west coast he wll be able to pursue hs Hm career more avdly. Sacra dong Carton Rodeo rder Charle Danel loves the sport, wants to see a rodeo team at Unversty By SANDRA ATKNS What's the most popular sport n Amerca today? Well when most people get all spruced up n ther snake skn boots and whte Stetson they lke to watch some tough rdn' and ropn' at the nearest rodeo. Charle Danel, a senor n lvestock producton at the Unversty, sad that n addton to beng popular, rodeo rdng s also one of the most dangerous sports. He sad that n 960 when there weren't nearly as many rders as there are today, an ndvdual could expect to have some type of serous njury, not to menton the usual sprans and bruses, one out of every four years that he or she was nvolved n rodeo competton. Danel, who calls hmself an "educated, avd fan'.' of rodeo rdng, saw hs frst rodeo at age 12 n New Mexco. Ever snce he's been nterested n every aspect of the sport and hopes to start rdng compettvely n March. He, along wth several others n the agrculture department at the Unversty, would lke to see a rodeo team started on campus. But as much as he would enjoy havng a team at the Unversty, 'Danels s not optmstc about a large membershp because of the cost. n order to form a compettve team each member would have to jon the Natonal ntercollegate Rodeo Assocaton - or NRA - whch costs $75 per person. Danels says that not many college students can rake up that much extra money and wthout an NRA mem- bershp a person s barred from competton. Anyone who wants to rde s also responsble for gettng ther own equpment such as spurs, bull ropes and gloves. Danel sad t can get qute expensve. The team would also need equpment to practce wth. Murray State, whch s one of the closest schools around wth a rodeo team has a mechancal bull - Danel calls t a 'toy' - to practce wth, stables for some of the rder's horses and a professonal crcut rder to coach the team. Stll another expense s the rentng of bulls, steers and horses to use n the annual rodeo. Ths can run nto thousands of dollars sad Danel. Murray holds ts rodeo on the last weekend n March at the Exposton Center n-downtown Murray. Danel says hs frst compettve rdng could be as a Unversty representatve n ths year's rodeo. An entrance fee of $25 s requred for each event; he s hopng to have the money n tme for the competton. Danel sad that for serous rders, jonng the NRA s only the begnnng. A rodeo rder's ultmate dream s to be excepted to the Professonal Rodeo Cowboys Assocaton. e» n order to jon the PRCA a rder must get an apprentce card and earn a set amount of money n rodeo rdng wthn a specfed tme perod. Danel sad that a PRCA champon s consdered to be the best n the world. f you've never watched steer ropng, bull rdng or barrel racng before maybe t's tme you got out there and started cheerng on your favorte cowboy at the next rodeo Every Wednesday s Famly Day! Some fnd t n abundance, but most fnd they have lttle to spare. Between classes, homework, n tramurals, eatng out and varous other outsde actvtes, tme s an exhausted resource t's been wrtten about, sung about and talked about as though t were a. fond frend who has quckly but quetly passed away. Advce from elders always refers to tme, to enjoy t whle stll young - don't waste a moment, whch s exactly what some Unversty students have done They have budgeted ther tme to where they cannot only enjoy themselves, but help others to do the same. These are the coaches and presdents of the Unversty clubs, groups and organzatons. Barb Les, presdent of the Kappa Delta Tau servce organzaton, s an example of one of these students. Les, who carred 20 hours last semester and 18 hours ths semester, agrees that t takes a great deal of tme, but feels she really doesn't sacrfce anythng. "The more you have to do, the more you get done," explaned Les. She also admtted that she would be bored wthout anythng to do. Although Les feels her job s not too dffcult, another student feds dfferently about hs nvolvement. He s Clayburn Trowell, presdent of the Student Assocaton He fnds hs tme regretfully slppng away as does hs grade pont average snce he took the job as presdent. Although Trowell does not regret takng on the Job, he lsted qute a few dsadvantages. These ncluded hs droppng grade pont, nstructors expectng too much, a large amount of tme consumpton and becomng a publc fgure for all problems. Ths may provde a grm outlook for beng SA presdent, but Trowell explaned that the advantages were great. He feels as though college lfe s unrealstc. "You get up, go to classes, eat and go back to sleep," sad Trowell Servng as a delegatng authorty and dealng wth people helps hm to look at lfe as a realty. Also, the job helps tremendously wth hs communcaton and applyng busness sklls. t s these advantages whch make Trowell admt to not regrettng becomng presdent. The only reward they get s personal satsfacton n helpng others. A couple of students may receve a slght frnge beneft, but the majorty receve nothng. Prce Jacobs, presdent of the Judo Club sad that "he's glad he's needed." He enjoys leadng the club, but he receves a great deal of hassle. Practces have been cancelled 12 tmes because the dub cannot practce the same tme a basketball game s beng played. f they practce n Weaver gym. a graduate assstant must be present. Jacobs must type up and ssue all documents and papers concernng the club. He must also deal wth recevng absolutely no funds from the unversty. Everythng the club does must be pad for by themselves. Although Jacobs could only say that he enjoys beng needed and rewards n seeng hs students become wnners, he never regrets takng the job as presdent and startng the club. When all the world seems to be n a hurry, t's nce to know and to see that there are people who take the tme to make lvng worthwhle. t's not just a handful of students who do ths deed. There are numerous ntramural coaches, club coaches and presdents, fraternty and sororty presdents, and others who take lme to gve ther frends, members, athletes responsbltes and put a lttle meanng nto ther lves. 0«*C f^ora -r DA< H*lHo^«'-e VJOM} Tr\«WMt**r (* sm*'*& fumn ow-rhc \»J*h/,dOWA». yemr- T pa. a! +»«.*» \» TAft.ft ft ;?«W WA*** G\so bur* fjod't ujcrr^ \ f*. Favortes n the champonshps, accordng to Erdmann are; Mddle Tennessee, Murray and Western but Erdmann sad that he feels that the Colonels wll have some wnnng tmes. Kenny Glover, the Colonels Al- Amercan hgh jumper s favored to capture the ttle n the conference meet. Glover set a meet rcord at the Oho State nvtatonal n the Colonel's last meet when he jumped 7'2", bestng the old meet mark by two nches. Kay Johnson, a junor from Donora, Pa who also set a meet record at the Oho State meet s also expected to do well. Johnson ran the 500 meters n 63.8 seconds, one tenth of a second slower than the qualfyng tme for the NCAA meet. Erdmann sad that he feels that Johnson wll be able to qualfy for the Natonal meet ths weekend. Other possble scorng performers lsted by Erdmann nclude; Rcky Estes n the trple jump, Mke Bernard n the 60-yard hurdles. Kevn Lews n he half mle. The men's gymnastcs team broke the team overall scorng record last Frday n ther fnal meet of the year aganst ndana (Snclar). Great, rght! Wrong, the team lost the match to The score of 231 was 7.9 ponts above the old school record. "Everybody had personal bests. Everyone was able to come back strong after any mstake they had," commented assstant coach Tm Dllon. Sophomore Jon Gaertner led the team and the meet wth an all-around score of Dave Smth was second wth a score of A pleasant surprse was the performance of the three freshman. Andy Toole. from Maryland Heghts. Mssour, scored a Peter Ruffu. from Aubrey. Texas, fnshed thrd on the team overall wth a Leonard Kannapell scored 5.75 n the floor exercse. Ths pleased Dllon who commented, "We have three freshman on an eghtman roster. And when the teams score fve or more players over forty ponts, you're dong good." The men's gymnastcs team s what many coaches call a young team. Out of an eght man roster the Unversty gymnasts sport three freshmen, two sophomores, one junor and two senors. On such a young team the senors are depended upon greatly. They are expected to lead the team on and off the court Ths s the case at the Unvers-ty The two senors, Davd Cole and George Gardner, are the perfect examples of leaders. "George and Dave are our captans because of ther excellent leadershp qualtes," commented Dllon. "They're smlar." They are smlar n many ways Both started gymnastcs late n lfe When most of the gymnasts start flppng before they can walk. Gardener and Cole were out playng basketball and football. 11 Pefle 10/Vol. 59/No. 23 The Eattern Proereaa Thuraday. February M. 1M1 r Saturday's loss to Western* n Bowlng Green put an end to the long and frustratng season for the Colonels as t dropped the team's record to 10-16; 7-7 n the conference. Austn Peay, a team that ted the Colonels n the conference race for the fourth and fnal tournament poston, won the Sde 11. bd by beatng the Colonels twce n head to head competton. Western, the frst place fnsher at 12-2 wll host the tournament that wll decde the league's representatve to the NCAA tournament n March. Western wll be the favorte to wn the tourney as they have not lost a home game to a conference opponent ths season. Murray and Mddle Tennessee, the second and thrd place teams respectvely, round out the four-team feld. Lookng back at the Colonels season, t seems as f the team should have at least made the four team OVC tourney. But the same problem plagued the team n so many of the losses, non-conference as well as conference. That was that the Colonels could not often put together two consstent halves of basketball n one game. Aganst Austn Peay, n the frst home game of the conference season, the Colonels led the Governors by 17 n the frst half, only to allow the Governors to come back and escape wth an mportant road wn, n Alumn Colseum, n the frst meetng wth the Colonel woes Hlltoppers of Western, the Colonels controlled the game most of the way. n fact, the Colonels led by fve at half tme and by as much as eght early n the second half, only to go cold and watch as Western fnally overtook the Colonels and handed them another homecourt loss. Cold shootng, however, was not the problem most of the year as the Colonels fell just short of a school record for feld goal percentage. But the Colonels turned the ball over 17 tmes per game. An even bgger factor may have been that the Colonels played the last seven games of the season wth only eght players. Followng the suspensons of Terry Bradley and Dwayne Smth, the Colonels managed only a 2-5 record and lost four crucal conference games, three by three ponts or less. Tennessee Tech, the last place team n the league, beat the Colonels on a last second shot after the Colonels had a chance to seal a wn and a berth n the conference tourney wth some free throws. St*v«Thomas Murray and Austn Peay, both beat the Colonels on ther own floor n close games that may have had a dfferent outcome had the Colonels been at full strength. A wn n any of these three games would have put the Colonels n the post-season tournament. Of the players currently on the roster, only four wll return to the team n A good recrutng year s desperately needed by the Colonels or fans could be n for a long dry spell. The fnal score ndcates a blow-out, yet a realty the game was a much more closer contest Wth the Colonels losng ther two bg men due to fouls. Dale Jenkns and Anthony Conner wthn mnutes of each other n the last fve mnutes of the second half, the Colonels fnally lost ther slppng grp on the stuaton. "When we lost those guys, we were all through. - sad coach Ed Byhre. He contnued; "We felt lke we could have come back on them...and we knew f we could keep them (Conner and Jenkns) n the game we would have had a chance." But the fouls kept the two bg men out and when Conner left the floor wth just under four mnutes remanng, the Colonel's nne-pont defct began to snowball. When Jenkns fouled out the Colonels were Just sx ponts shy of the Hlltoppers. Another factor that hurt the Colonel's was the cold shootng of guard Tommy Baker n the frst half. He dd not ht a shot untl 3:10 remanng n the frst half. However, Baker ended the game wth 14 ponts wth 10 of those found n the second half. The Colonels shot a cool 38 percent from the feld, but burned the net at the foul lne wth 91 percent. The Hlltoppers ended wth 47 percent from the feld, 59 percent from the foul lne. Byhre sad be felt that "We played as well as we possbly could have, except that we weren't bttng our shots...we played fve players, each playng about 33 mnutes, and that s about as far as we could go." The Colonel's frst half play was somewhat nconsstent yet so was Westerns play, whch helped to keep the Colonels n the game. But when the Colonels were not playng nconsstently they were playng valantly, wth a tough 2-3 and l-s-l defense. Offensvely, they came back fve tmes n the frst half to te the Ml Hoppers, although the Colonels could never manage to overtake them. Toe Colonels bad 40 rebounds to Western's 48, and were gulty of 15 turnovers to the Hlltopper's 12 Only two other Colonels reached the double fgure column besdes Baker, Bruce Jones wth 14 and Anthony Conner wth S. Ths s n contrast to Western who had four players n double fgures, wth Crag McCormck takng top honors wth 21 ponts. n regard to the passed season and next years', Byhre explaned, "No SESton about t-t's dscouragng, ngs begn to bother you." Byhre cted that over the past three years, the Colonels have won 51 games whch averages nto 17 wns a season. Byhre explaned that some of ths dscouragement comes from the "fnancal aspect of our program." But, Byhre sad "we have to be optmstc and hope for consstency. Our goal every year s to wn the league You have to go nto any season wth the aspraton of beng the best n the league.. sometmes t happens that way and sometmes t doesn't." Women seek wn over Western By DENSE LARSON Wth two regular season meets remanng, the women's gymnastcs team wll take on Western ths weekend n hopes of rasng ther seasonal allaround average. A hgher all-around score would mean a closer shot at qualfyng for the natonals. "Ths s a good chance for us to rase our seasonal average because we wll have four natonally ranked Judges from Lousvlle scorng," sad senor all arounder Rhonda WUkerson. Wlkerson, who was out for nne days wth a straned back lgament sad she wll be ready to compete ths weekend. Accordng to head coach Dr. Agnes Chretzberg, "Rhonda looks as strong as ever and Cheryl Behne wll be back so we are at full strength." Chretzberg tees the week layoff as the gymnasts greatest handcap. "We have to get mentally ready whch s tough because you tend to relax a bt after a rest," she sad. The gymnasts beat Western earler ths year U8.1S to 87.85, so the competton doesn't seem to pose a bg threat. "Western s a dvson-two team and they have had several njures and dsappontng tmes," sad Chretzberg. The women, who Chretzberg sees as beng n at least the top four n the regon, are also lookng to the regonal tournament n two weeks. "Lousvlle has the hghest all-around score n the regon, accordng to Chretzberg but we're not back n the Km Floer. sophomore from Cncnnat takes am n practce before a recent rfle meet. They lost to them earler ths season Chretzberg s pleased wth ths year's progress and feels the team can beat last year's fourth place fnsh f everyone stays healthy. "t depends on what we can do as a team." "They have all been consst a n( and haven't had any bad meets," sad Chretzberg. Then she contnued, "Ths year all the members have contrbuted, the top scores can be out and because of our depth t doesn't hurt us too much." Nancy K. McCartney breaks 'voodoo 9 to dscuss "The Beatles' By RANDY PATRCK To say that the Beatles war* a great muscal group s grossly understatng the fact that they were probably the moat revolutonary thng to happen to popular musc and popular culture n our tme. t has been a decade snce they dsbanded, yet they stll reman a pervasve nfluence on our lvea. Snce the tragc death of John Lennon n December, there has been a renewal of nterest n the Beatles, both collectvely and as ndvduals. Although ts former members have been reluctant to talk about the Beatles n the past, last August. "Muscan: Player tt Lstener" magazne publshed an ntervew wth Paul McCartney, n whch he at last broke what he called the "voodoo aganst talkng about the Beatles." The nterevew was subsequently made avalable on Columba records, frst as a promo dsc for rado and later. as a lmted edton collector's tem. The ntervew, whch was conducted by Vc Garbarn. was never orgnally ntended for broadcast, whch s evdenced by the background noses: Englsh polce srens, laughter and McCartney makng tea The nformalty and canddness of the ntervew tend only to make t more pleasurable to lsten to. Explanng how he accounts for the explosve mpact of the Beatles on Amerca n 1964, when they frst appeared on the Ed Sullvan Show. Mc- Cartney says. "Amercans had t gong one certan way and the Beatles were just such a dfferent thng. We had been takng all of the Amercan nfluences and dstllng them n a Brtsh way." Actually ther success wasn't that nstantaneous, he clams. They worked long and hard n Germany and England, gradually buldng up a large followng and developng ther muscal style and ther appearance, whch ncluded Edwardan suts and the famous Beatles harcut. Then they "lad t all n one bg move on the Amercans." Another thng was that, "We were cheeky enough to say 'We won't go to the States untl we've made a number one record." McCartney sad and he sad he beleves that the reason Clff Rchard, the Sex Pstols and others have faled so mserably here, was that they dd not frst establsh ther popularty at home. Dd they know at the tme that they would be as bg as they were? Not really, he says. " don't thnk Al, when he was shoutng he was the greatest, knew he was... He suspected he was. We suspected we were." But he nssts that t was all just show busness. " don't really lke to speak for John. but my theory s that he thnks he's done enough n all of the thngs he wanted to do, except beng hmself," repled McCartney. One of the questons reporters frequently asked the Beatles was, "What wll you do when the bubble bursts?" dton whch had often plagued hm. even as a Beate McCartney began hs muscal career wth a trumpet whch hs father bought hm and whch he traded for an old gutar after he realzed he wouldn't be able to sng and play t at the same tme. The gutar eventually got smashed n "that Pete Townshend fury" and he then turned to the pano. Fnally, when the group returned to England from Hamburg, Stu Sutclffe, the band's bassst, who had opted to stay n Germany, lent McCartney hs bass. The queston was never consdered a serous one, he contnues. They always repled wth somethng lke, " don't know. We'll ral down out of the sky or somethng." When the Beatles fnally dd break up, t was due to a number of reasons. ''Frcton came n. Busness thngs came n. Relatonshps between people..." The program tself was desgned n a creatve and dstnctly uncommon style. The cover of the program was decorated wth drawngs of each of the characters n the chldren's muscal. The blue kangaroo was the largest to grace the cover, as he should be snce he s the star of the play. The program unfolds to dsplay a maze for the chldren. They must help Sarah, the lttle grl n the play, fnd the blue kangaroo. There s also a connect he-dot fgure of the jack-n-the-box prnted on the program. Specal nstructonal materal was also desgned for the producton for use n the classroom. Educatonal games such as makng as many words as possble out of the ttle of the producton were compled for the teachers to use n ther classroom nstructon. Wrtten by Greg Gessler and Mchael Snder, "The Blue Kangaroo" s the story about an old toy kangaroo (Robert Hoagland ) that s left sttng forlornly back n the corner of a toy shop. A couple of robbers (Anta Lenhart and C. Neal Vpperman) vst the toy shop and hde ther loot n the pouch of the blue kangaroo. Sarah (Jacquelne Daly) s a lttle grl who comes to play n the toy shop. She chooses to play wth the blue kangaroo nstead of any of the other mechancal toys. The blue kangaroo, who has been hdden back n the corner of the toy shop for qute some tme becomes "real" after Sarah gves hm her love and affecton. He learns how to feel and thus dscovers the Jewels that the robbers have hdden n hs pouch Sarah and the blue kangaroo hde the jewels n the jack-n-the-box Bran T. Woodlee). Sarah hdes n the toy shop untl the toymaker (Basl B. Clark) has left for the nght. The robbers return to get the jewels that they have stolen after the toymaker has left. Wth the help of the other toys (Mchael Mller as Toy Solder No 2. Jeffery L. Warren as Toy Solder No 1. Debra Bspng as the Blue Doll, Lynn Henrckson as the Green Doll and Tracy M. Remley as the Tap Dancng Dolly). Sarah and the blue kangaroo start a scuffle to prevent the robbers from gettng away wth the jewels The polceman (Robert L. Butler and the toymaker arrve durng the scuffle and the robbers are arrested. Accordng to Jude Snder, the drector of the play, the story deals wth love and carng and the concept of realty. The performance of the cast was n general, qute good Much emphass appeared to be gven to facal expressons and audence nvolvement. f the objectves of "The Blue Kangaroo" ncluded provdng educatonal nstructon, then t succeeded n at least two dfferent ways. The Unversty students ganed valuable experence workng n a producton desgned solely for a chldren's theater. Revew The vstors from surroundng grade schools and hgh schools ganed a lesson n lovng and carng. Through the personalty of the blue kangaroo, who was unlke any of the other toys, they learned that beng dfferent s not a bad thng to be. Through the performance of the toymaker. they learned that kndness and generosty are admrable trats. 'Cutouts' reduce album costs By J.D. BROOKSHRE Busness Manager nflaton s btng nto everyone's pocket but there exsts a group of people who are sufferng n a unque manner - Rock-n-Roll addcts. Those of us who are thoroughly hooked on musc are fndng t ncreasngly dffcult to augment our dwndlng supply of tunes. Whv''Bucks that's why! We have to choose between eatng regularly and buyng a copy of an album by the "Boss." Take heart Recordsmth (Behnd Jerrys') HOURS 7 A.M. to 8 P.M. campers. There s an alternatve - "cutouts " Ths s a secton of albums that are found n vrtually every record shop. t conssts of alburns that have fallen from the charts, older albums and unfortunately, varous copes of "Shawn Cassdy's Greatest Hts'' or!.: ' 'Slm Whtman Anthology.'' etc The pont s that f you smply can't afford to stay up wth the latest releases, you stll don't need to mss out entrely. THE Chances are that you'll fnd mssng members of a set or lesser known albums by many of the better sellng groups. Many tmes you'll be pckng up albums that may be less than a year old but ddn't warrant reorderng so the last few copes end up marked down for clearance you're tred of only hearng what's played on the rado and stll don't want to hear your checkbook cryng tself to sleep at nght then "cutouts" may be vour best bet When the performers turned ther heads durng the dance numbers, the sound of ther voces was lost for a short moment. t's probable that the acoustcs of the theater were respon sble for ths, but sound has never been a problem n any of the other produc lons The costumes for the play were qute approprate and extremely colorful All of the costumes were desgned by Snder's costume desgn class. Another unqueness of the producton was the ncluson of Lee Yeary, Lee Major's son, who worked on the set constructon "The Blue Kangaroo" s based on the book, "The Velveteen Rabbt" wrtten by Mchael F. Snder The musc was wrtten by Kurt Mser Snder and Mser collaborated on the lyrcs for the producton. Jm Chrstan was the choreographer and muscal drector.
