News Edtor Students, students and more students. An ncreased number of students requestng on-campus housng ths year has created 120 temporary buldups, mostly n freshmen resdences. "Due to an ncrease n applcants and attendants at Marst, as well as updated facltes and actvtes, more students want to lve on campus ths year," sad Anthony Fusar, assstant to the drector of Housng and Resdental Lfe. The college guarantees-.oncampus housng to alf frst: and second year students, but room assgnments depend on a student's accumulaton of prorty ponts after that: Ths year, there are a greater number of "buld-ups", or temporary trples, n frst-year areas then n upper-class resdences. The housng crunch n freshmen areas was the result of the large number of students enrolled at Marst. The Admssons Offce was orgnally requested by the college admnstraton to enrqll 850 new students, but by Aprl 1997 that number had ncreased to 870. By May 1,940 people had decded to attend Marst. Kent Rnehart, assstant drector of admssons, sad the Admssons Offce dd not feel ths would cause a problem. "It s typcal to lose 50 to 70 students over the summer [for numerous reasons], and even after losng 70 students, we would have reached our target number," he "But that expected number of students was. less ths year." Admssons gave the Offce of Housng and Resdental Lfe Crcle Pholo/Mkc Fnsch One half of the Indgo Grls plucks away at her gutar. Accrodng to Emly Salers and Amy Ray, The Indgo Grls, ther current tour s to draw attenton to the destructon done to the planet by nuclear waste. "There s currently a bll n process, whch, f passed, wll allow the transport of toxc nuclear waste across 1-84 from New York and the surroundng areas to Nevada," Ray "Ths wll endanger the lves of mllons across the country." Salers sad the group s tryng to get the attenton of the government through non-volent acton. "We are handng out acton cards at every concert, one to Bll Clnton and one to Carol Brown, the head of the Envronmental Protecton Agency" she "They need to be aware that many people are opposed to ths bll." Ray sad the Natve Amercans are beng pushed off ther reservatons to make room for these toxc waste dumps. "The land becomes contamnated wth chemcals from the waste, and seeps nto ther bodes," she "It s then passed on to ther chldren through breast mlk." Wnona Laduke s also a coordnator of the tour. "We are tryng to draw attenton to the rghts of the grassroots communtes," she "The EPA needs to protect the rghts of the poor as well." Please see INDIGO, page 4... the number of students they needed to accommodate. Appro x - mately 844 frst-year students were guaranteed housng wth only 774 spaces avalable. The result Iwas 76 trples created Crcle Photo/Mke l ; r\ch Several students are lvng n trpled-up rooms all over campus. n Maran Hall, Sheahan Hall, Leo Hall, and Lower Champagnat. Ths s nearly double the total number of buld-ups found last year throughout the entre campus. Housng dstrbutes all the resdental spaces avalable to ncomng students, but when there are'students.left-ovcr-,- they must begn trplng. Frstyear room assgnments depend on when a student submts ther room depost. The later a depost, the more lkely that student wll be n a trple. Susan Erole, assstant drector of Housng and Resdental Lfe, sad the college smple does not have the room to house everyone. ~ -,-.. "There are more students on campus, but the space to accommodate them hasn't grown," she To accommodate the overload of students, resdence halls on campus underwent major renovatons ths summer. The fourth and sxth floor lounges n Leo were converted nto rooms for three and the sngles located n lower Clampaghat were bult- Please see ROOM, page 3... SGA Chef Justce renstated after wnnng appeal, resgns two weeks later bybenagoes News Edtor The Chef Justce of Marst's Student Government Assocaton resgned yesterday n a letter to the Senate, sayng he could not work wth a Senate that was so based aganst hm. "The Senate has consstantly been the underachevng branch of SGA,"former Chef Justce, Jason Sprague wrote. The Senate burst nto applause after SGA Presdent Frank Madur read the letter and tore t up, throwng t n the garbage can. Commuter Senator Danny Keegan, sad he was releved Sprague resgned. "I'm just glad everythng s fnally over and done," he Madur sad Sprague's resgnaton wll gve the admnstraton the chance to fnd "someone that sees eye to eye wth us." Before hs resgnaton, Sprague was mpeached at an Aprl 30,1997, Senate meetng, but the mpeachment was overturned early September by an an ndependent counsel that ruled the Senate faled to follow proper procedures.resdent Senator, Charles Leone, motoned to mpeach Sprague at the Aprl 30 meetng for "two counts of msconduct at recent SGA meetngs, volaton of Artcle 4 Secton 7, volaton of Artcle 4 Secton 2," accordng to the meetng's mnutes. The Senate charges ncluded volaton of the judcal board requrement that t meet at least b-weekly at a specfc tme, and procedural volatons by Sprague at past appeal-presentatons. The Senate voted 6-0 n favor of mpeachment wth three abstentons. Sprague appealed to Gerard Cox, vce presdent and dean for student affars, who gathered the case's facts and apponted John Doherty, assstant professor of crmnal justce, as ndependent counsel. After a summer of nvestgaton, Doherty returned a letter to Cox on Aug. 22, 1997, renstatng Sprague as chef justce. "The appeal was granted because of lack of due process n the procedures," Cox "How [Jason] was dealt wth was n queston." Cox sad Doherty had also found nstances n whch the Senate faled to accurately record meetng mnutes. Sprague was contacted by student affars Sept. 1 notfyng hm of hs renstatement. He sad he felt njured by the mpeachment case aganst hm. "I feel that I have been njured by [the Senate's] vote of no confdence, of mpeachment," Sprague "I.'ye.worked hard for SGA and I feel bad that they brought such hearngs aganst me. I feel personally hurt n that I've done nothng. There's no tme to play poltcal games." He sad he receved offcal word of hs mpeachment a full fve days after the Senate meetng, and was shocked by the charges aganst hm. "I get ths memo that says you've been mpeached for ths, that and the next thng," he "It ddn' t make any sense to me. They sad I was mpeached for Please see SENATE, page 4... September 18,1997 Students fear safety lvng ofr-eampus bystephaniemercurio Managng Edtor A securty system was on the back-toschool lst for some Marst students. Many students, such as junor Kelly Kenefck, are forced to lve off-campus n the cty of Poughkeepse because of the lack of upper-class housng. Kenefck sad, however, ths s not the safest alternatve. "I feel very unsafe, lvng on Unon^" Kenefck "We had to call the polce the other nght because we thought someone was trespassng." Kenefck sad Poughkeepse resdents constantly harass her and her four female housemates. "Every tme we go outsde, the people who lve here who are not students always make comments lke 'Hey baby,'" she "Many of them are harmless, but t s stll scary." " Junor Trsha Sears lves on South Whte Street. "I lve a block away from a bad neghborhood, and a block away from a good neghborhood," she "There are certan hours when I feel safe, however t depends on the tme of day." Sears sad she lved by herself n her apartment for the summer. "I have two other room mates, but I was alone all summer," she "It was pretty freaky then. The polce do patrol, but you never know who s gong to be out n the neghborhood." Kenefck sad that s the reason her house put n a securty system. "We make sure we lock everythng at nght," she "We also put n a securty system that we make sure we set." Senor Jane Rosck sad she feels very safe lvng n the Kaal-"Rock apartment complex. "At nght there are securty guards patrollng the area on foot," she "We lve rght next to a housng project, but there have never been any problems.". -." Rosck sad lvng on the outskrts of Poughkeepse has many benefts. "We do not lve n the cty, so we do not have to deal wth all of the people," she "We also lve n a communty, whch adds to securty." Ron Lyp, a senor, also lves n Kaal- Rock. "I have not yet felt threatened at all, because there are so many, students lvng there," he Lyp also sad he lkeclnot lvng n the cty. In Your OpzLnon "Whle my room mate and I were look-' ng for a house, we stayed away from the cty," he "The whole areaaround herels nce, even though the people lvng n the apartment project are a lttle bt shady." Rosck sad she feels her car s secure atkaal-rock. "I have not really seen anyone tryng to break nto any of the cars," she "The lghtng s excellent, so that helps." Kenefck sad she worres about the people n her neghborhood. "I heard that a grl was mugged down the street and that the man who dd t dd not get caught," she "A man also came to our door, beggng for food." Kenefck sad'that Marst needs more housng. "There s nothng Marst can do about our safety off-campus, but the whole reason we lve here s because we could not lve bn-campus," she "Marst needs to create more housng." Lyp sad he feels the same. "I was forced to move off, even though I really dd not want to," he "I feel safe so far, but I stll would lke to be oncampus." How mportant a part does the meda play n your lfe? KATHYGAZZHJLO Junor 'At school, the meda does not play an mportant part. I don't really st own and watch the news, and I on't have access to a newspaper s I would at home." CORRYDURDOVIC Junor "I thnk that as an Advertsng major, I have to be aware of the dfferent medas. If an mportant event happens, I thnk t s mperatve to watch the news." SECURITY BRIEFS -Sept 14,2:00 a.m.: Two males n Mdrse were stopped when the entry offcer on duty heard clnkng and notced "two large bulges n the front crotch area of the students." The bulges were Rollng Rock beers, whch were confscated. -Sept. 14,12:45 p.m.: The Fre Alarm was sounded n Dyson whle Alpha Sgma Tau sororty was blowng up balloons wth a helum tank for ther Preference Party. - Sept. 13,1:55 a.m.: Two students and ther guests had alcohol confscated when they walked nto Leo wth sx bottles and 14 cans of beer clnkng n ther backpacks. The vstors were made to stay the nght n order to sober up, and sent home the next mornng. - Sept. 13 and 14: There were two ncdents of unhealthy alcohol consumpton. Both male students were sent to the hosptal to be treated. - Sept. 12, 2:11 a.m.: The fre alarm n Champagnat was sounded after 40 one nch fre crackers went off n the fourth floor starwell. The perpetrator was not caught. - Several obscene phone calls have been made to numerous rooms from both on and off campus. Head of Securty, Joe Leary stated that off campus calls are hard to trace but they wll call the polce and phone companes. If made from an. campus, the call can be traced. McCann Recreatonal Center reman closed because of a strng of complcatons that have pushed the addton's openng date nearly eght months behnd schedule. Tom Daly, drector of Physcal Plant, sad n a Sept. 19, 1996, Crcle edton that the buldng was expected to be completed njan. 1997, but recent problems wth the mosture content n the cement floor has pushed back that target to ths October, or even beyond. The trouble areas are the freeweght room, cardo-vascular room and gym room floors whch are to be overlad wth Mondo Sport mpact floorng, a rubber floorng known for ts durablty and shock absorpton. Coln Sullvan, assstant drector of athletcs, sad Mondo s one of the world's best known floorng and t was used durng the 1996 Atlantc Olympcs. He sad, the hgh qualty floor requres that there be only a lmted amount of mosture n the cement base., "There are very hgh standards for puttng ths n," Sullvan "We are not gong to put down the floor untl the nstaller can guarantee t's Tm Murray, drector of athletcs>.sad rnosturesjcontent^s; measured n pounds of vapor emsson, and the deal emsson for layng Mondo floorng s Crcle Pholo/Charles May The exteror structure of the McCann Center Annex s completed. Work on the nsde s contnung but beng delayng by excessve mosture n the concrete. three pounds. But the cement n McCann s at fve pounds of vapor emsson whch could destroy the floor f t was lad down. "If we nstall Mondo above three pounds per square nch, t would bubble the floor, creatng seam problems, and bascally runng the floor," he Murray sad the buldng s complete, but cannot be opened to students because that could exacerbate the mosture problem. "Iwouldn't mnd havng t open," he sad, "but what we are.tryng to do s keep the doors closed and dry t out." Sullvan sad the college has been tryng to keep a steady clmate n the buldng by manpulatng the heat and ar condtonng systems, but that has met wth lttle success. The college has even consulted wth a varety of concrete experts, whch Murray sad, are just as baffled as Marst admnstrators. "It's frustratng and everyone s scratchng ther head on ths one," Murray "It's a stuaton that no one had antcpated." Marst offcals and the concrete specalsts cannot seem to pnpont exactly what created so much mosture to be trapped nsde the cement, r The problem crjuld have stemmed from a varety of sources, ncludng too much -water n the cement mx or that t Camps computer labs receve upgrade over summer as result of new IBM leasng program byjenfemmenella Staff Wrter Marst s now movng at a cool 200 mega-hertz thanks to a new leasng program that upgraded many. of the- college's computers to Pentum processors. The new lease wth IBM has allowed Pentum processors to be nstalled n Dyson 303, Lowell Thomas21 l,half of the Donnelley Lab and at the Fshkll and Goshen campuses. In the past, Marst smply bought new computers whenever ther machnes became outdated. Wth the leasng program, Marst can update a dfferent lab every summer. These leased computers wll then be replaced every three years. No computer lab on campus wll have computers wth technology more than three years old. All the new computers are accessble to students, except the Lowell Thomas computers, whch were nstalled for the School of Communcatons ard the Arts. Barbara McMullen, drector of Academc Computng, sad ths leasng program wll elmnate the problem of computers'becomng obsolete a few years after they are bought. "It s harder to upgrade bought computers because of ar the money spent on each machne," she "The leasng program s desgned to run.' out, and encourage upgradng." Wendy Duncan, drector of Informaton Servces, sad the new leasng program wll keep the latest technology assessable to students. "Computer technology s a trcky market," she "Sometmes less than a year after you have bought an upgrade, t s outdated. Ths wll enable Marst to keep new technology all of the tme." The new machnes are Pentum processors that run at faster speeds, have more memory and a larger hard drve than the old 486 models used on campus. The machnes are preloaded wth Wndows 95 and Offce 97 software. McMullen sad ths s an mportant upgrade because "these same programs are used n the busness world. Students need experence wth the programs now to prepare themselves." The new computers also offer multmeda capabltes. Marst students wll be able to edt vdeo, wrte scrpt and desgn graphcs wth new software obtaned through the lease. Fundng for the leasng program came from dfferent dvsons usng funds from ther own operatng budgets. Ths lease s not connected to the Marst/IBM Jont Study, or the proposed Dgtal Lbrary. Tm Masse, drector of college relatons, sad the lease wll put Marst above other colleges n terms of technology. "These computer lab upgrades were vtal to mantan Marst's leadershp poston as a technologcally advanced college," he Masse also sad t s hard to keep up wth the changes. "One of the dffcultes wth technology s rapd change. It s nearly mpossble to upgrade equpment as contnuously as we would lke. However, we are fortunate we can do entre labs at one tme, and we wll contnue to look at ths each year to meet the ever-changng demands of technology." was too humd on the day the floor was poured or that an underground sprng s seepng through. But Murray sad the lkely cause s the college's proxmty to the Hudson Rver and ths summer's unusual weather. "What we're dealng wth s that the college s next to the rver and we had a very humd summer, and the cement just sn't dryng," he sad^ But even that doesn't explan why the gym floor, whch was poured one year ago, stll has a hgh mosture readng..tmothy Casperson, junor, :"sad he was dsapponted when he returned n September and the McCann addton was not complete. "I was expectng to come back and t would be all done," he "I thnk the students are gettng the short end of the stck. We pay an actvtes fee and we can't even work out!" He sad he wants the college to wat and put the floor n correctly, but t has taken too long. "It's good that they are gong to do t rght, but they should have thought about ths whole process and done t rght n the frst place," Casperson Sullvan sad the buldng s gong to be dedcated durng homecomng weekend, Oct. 25 and 26, and the college hopes to have the floor done by then. But f mosture levels are stll too hgh, he sad, admnstrators have been lookng nto a contngency plan that could nclude ether openng small parts of the buldng or puttng down temporary carpetng. Sullvan sad he was dsapponted the buldng was not completed by September, but that wll all be forgotten when t opens. "I am dsapponted because 1 would have lked t at the begnnng of the year, but that won't take away from t when t fnally does open," Sullvan "Ths s gong to be the most advanced faclty n the northeast. In just a recrutng standpont, t s gong to be fantastc. Rome wasn't bult n a day, and nether was the McCann Center." Casperson sad he s worred about future Marst constructon projects. A year and a half to buld McCann was too long, he "You have to thnk, f t took them ths long for McCann, how long wll t take them to fnsh the lbrary?" he Room shortage causes tght stuaton..contnued from page 1 jjp to doubles. For Leo Hall freshman, heather Clarke, adjustng to Marst was hard because of puld-ups. "When you're used to havng your own space, one roomnate s hard enough to adjust o n a small room. Ths room s too small for three," Clarke >ad. "My roommates and I leed to unpack more stuff, but we don't have any room to put t. Space s a bg problem." The Admssons Offce sad ft realzes ths s an unusual crpumstance. "Ths s not an deal stuaon," Rnehart "We don't ry to over-enroll, we just try o ht our key number of stuents. Sometmes we go too lgh, sometmes we go low. Ths year we are hgh, but t was nothng ntentonal." The recent change n the prsrty ponts system, assocated wth the unexpectedly large request for on-campus housng, greatly affected room assgnments for upper-class stuents ths year. The averages needed foron- :ampus housng was changed s a result of the ncreased alotment of prorty ponts for 3PA, and'the Housng offce was unable to predct how many students to expect ths year because there was no pror standard. The cut-off was set at 27 prorty ponts whch dened housng to 150 upper-class students. There were stll too many people to accommodate for even after the cut-off was determned. Some upper-class students were angered by ther unexpected arrangements. "I thnk t's rdculous n Gartland where there's no room to suffcently ft two," sad Mke Mlby, junor. "There's not enough room for the furnture and I can't even unpack everythng because there s no room." Orgnally 142 buld-ups were assgned, but 22 have already been broken down n the past two weeks because of housng no-shows and wthdrawals. A $400 refund wll be granted to all those students stll n a trple after Sept. 22. The Housng offce wll contnue to break down the trples based on the dates of depost for frst-year students and prorty ponts for upper-class students even after that date. Erole sad the Housng offce s dong ts best to break up all buld-ups by the end of the year.

3 .^Senate msconduct whch I say I've done no msconduct.". Sprague sad he was annoyed that the Senate charged hm wth volatng the b-weekly judcal board requrements. "How am I supposed to hold meetngs when there's nothng to meet on? I am not gong to convene the meetng when there s nothng to do," he Mnutes for the Aprl 30 meetng read that the Senate mpeached Sprague because of hs "gross and contnued neglgence and personal msuse of power." Kevn Lundy, Senate speaker, sad the Senate s not embarrassed by the mpeachment and subsequent overturnng. "We voted our conscence and we voted on what we beleved," Lundy "[Jason] was enttled to hs appeal and the admnstraton rendered a decson. My concern s to move on and get to all the ssues we want." Colleen McOulloch, SGA parlamentaran, refused comment, referrng all questons to Katherne Jowdy, SGA drector of publc relatons. Senate members are elected each year, and Jowdy sad the. former Senate, whch was leav-.'. ng just as the present Senate was enterng, tred; ther best to nfluence polcy one fnal tme. "It was lke [the old Senate] wanted to go out wth a bang because they wanted to get revenge," she That revenge she sad was.* ; amed at Madur's nomnaton /r^for executve vce presdent, John 'Wllams.....V." ': E'-ttfc;-: L" "The old Senate had personal reasons aganst John," Jowdy sad, "and they tred to nfluence the new Senate." Madur sad many of the old- Senate members dd not support hs nomnaton for executve vce presdent. "There was a lot of personal feelngs n the room and a lot [of them] wanted to see some-, one else," he Last year's Senate dd deny Wllams confrmaton durng a Aprl 6, 1997, meetng, but he appealed to the judcal board whch was headed by Sprague. The judcal board decded the Senate had faled to follow proper procedure and t overturned, the Senate's decson, makng Wllams executve vce presdent. Lundy would not go nto detal as to whether the Judcal Board's rulng n favor of John Wllams had anythng to do wth Sprague's mpeachment, but he dd not rule t out. "I'm not gong to say t's not a part of t," he Sprague sad he was not the one that overturned the Senate's decson on Wllams because under the SGA consttuton, he does not even have a vote on the board. "[The Senate] sad I renstated John Wllams," he "It says n the consttuton I have the least amount of powers. lama reactve board. I react to any appeal gven to me." Ths secton s devoted to n-depth stores on current ssues, both world and campus related. Prncess Dana's death questons the meda's role n celebrtes' lves. Some people say the meda s too ntrusve n the lves of the famous. Journalsts say they are smply tryng to get the nformaton the publc wants. We wll let you decde. Publc demand for celebrty gossp to blame for meda crossng the lne by CHRISTOPHERTHORNE Focus Edtor When s too much just too much? Some newspapers and magaznes go all out to report the good and bad thngs that happen to famous-people. Why does the meda go to such extremes, and more mportantly, should they? Accordng to Douglas Cole, professonal lecturer of advertsng, the meda has the rght to get ths nformaton; but s not mandatory that they do get t. "Just because they have the rght to do t, doesn't mean that t s always rght to do t," Cole. Cole sad that celebrtes should not have to sacrfce ther prvacy just because ther famous. "They [celebrtes] should be able to get n and out of ther homes wthout havng to lterally fght ther way," Cole sad: Amanda Arnold, a freshman crmnal justce major, also beleves that the meda should not ntrude on celebrtes prvate lves. -r- : z--?- ''' ' \.:. :." '.' "It [the meda] could cause problems n ther lves that aren't needed," she sad, "[and] they need to have ther prvate lves just lke we do." Sophomore James Leto sad that celebrtes have a greater. lfestyle, but prvacy should stll.be/part of t, and the meda should not nterfere. "They should leave them alone." he sad,"they [celebrtes] have a hgher lfe, but they should also have a prvate lfe." Accordng to Cole, t s the publc who are to blame n all of ths, and not the meda. "I thnk that we, the publc, are the bad guys rather than the meda." Cole - Cole sad that t s the publc's ncurable desre to hear and read about celebrty gossp that pushes the meda over the lne. "It's our nsatable appette for ttlatng mages and our wllng- I tte tearsrm Imm m funop that movea Crvlc PhnlVMU- Frwh ness to pay to see them, that drves the meda to these excesses." he sad, "Otherwse, t would be a waste of tme and effort." Accordng to Lnda Dunlap, professor of psychology, the publc sees celebrtes as people they would lke to be. "People algn wth the rch and beautful so to lve vcarously through them," Dunlap Dunlap sad that ths desre to be them s smultaneously conflcted wth jealousy toward then as well. "We are also envous at the same tme." she 'It [celebrty gossp] brngs them down to earth." Accordng to Cole, the amount of and necessty for meda scrutny s dependent upon the celebrty. "It depends on the celebrty and why they are beng hounded," Cole Cole also sad that a celebrty does not buy nto the meda scrutny just because he or she became well known. "It depends on how they became a celebrty." he sad, "Chelsea Clnton s a celebrty, but she ddn't buy nto t." Arnold sad that she wll read about celebrty gossp only when they are exclusve stores, whereas Leto sad he does not read any of t at all. "Once n a whle, but not when t's overly talked about," Arnold Cole also sad that the meda cannot cross over lnes whenever t feels necessary. "No one ever agreed that anythng goes." Journalsts re-evaluatng ther reportng ethcs n wake of Prncess Dana tragedy bymichaelgoot Edtor-n-chef Once agan journalsts are under, fre for ther reportng ethcs and standards. Margot Hardenbergh, assstant professor of meda arts,at Marst College, sad Dana's death has forced them to re-examne ther values. "It already has had an mpact and that has been allowng the meda to crtcze themselves," she Hardenbergh- sad she does not thnk ths tragedy wll serously affect the press from carryng out ts day to day operatons. Hardenbergh sad she does not favor legslaton to correct ths problem. "The publc may call for legslaton," she "I thnk t's up to professonal organzatons to convnce the publc that that's not the rght to go about dong t." She also sad more should be done to work wthn exstng systems. "It seems as f there s a lot already there to protect ndvduals and we stll need to protect our Frst Amendment," she Carol Paul, assstant professor of broadcast journalsm, sad she thnks there wll be a backlash aganst tablod newspapers lke The Globe and The Natonal Enqurer, who are known for relentlessly gong after celebrtes. Paul sad she saw n the news that a photographer had attempted to sell photographs of the njured prncess to one of the tablods. "The edtor sad no," she "That's blood money." Paul sad there probably not be much of a change n the way journalsts gather nformaton. New legslaton may be enacted or courts may be more sympathetc to plantffs who clam that they are beng harassed. Paul, who teaches a class at Marst about mass communcatons law, sad t s hard to restran the meda from coverng publc offcals and fgures. "If you're on a publc street, you have no reasonable expectaton of prvacy," she She sad, however, there can be a pont were journalst goes too far. "To target a person and follow them around relentlessly, that begns to qualfy as harassment," he Paul cted an example of Jacke Kennedy Onass, who got a court order aganst a photographer that requred hm to stand a certan dstance away from her. * " Lke Hardenbergh, Paul sad she would prefer f the regulatng came from wthn the meda, ratherthan tbe mposed externally. "They [journalsts] can adopt ther own ethcs or codes that. gve some breathng space to people rather than have t legslated," she However, Paul sad she s not sure that such a polcy could totally change the state of journalsm n ths country. Randy Hayman, assstant professor of journalsm, sad that although there wll be a lot of reacton to ths tragedy ntally, there wll be lttle done over the long term. "I thnk they'll be a lot of ma culpa, chest beatng, "We were wrong,' and that wll maybe last a few weeks, a few months, but then t wll probably go back to thngs as usual." Hayman sad there are numerous other examples to support hs theory. "Look at coverage of the O.J. Smpson tral, coverage of Waco, and coverage of Rchard Jewell," he "Dd anythng change after that? No." Hayman sad the current conservatve Supreme Court has protected the Frst Amendment concerns on numerous occasons. He sad they would probably strke down any attempt to regulate the press. Rather than legslaton, Hayman sad he supports the creaton of a press councl. Ths dea s somethng that journalst Mke Wallace has pushed for. Newspapers on the councl would follow common gudelnes. Any papers on the councl that dd not follow these gudelnes would be ostraczed. Hayman sad the role of the meda n the lves of these people s part of a dsturbng trend. He sad n journalsm schools today, professors teach ethcs, but they do not reflect what s actually gong on n the real world. "They're tryng to mpart n students' mnds to stck wth ther value systems," he "But when they go out n the real world, they fnd that the meda owners and edtors have a dfferent set of values." Hayman, who teaches a course called Press n Amerca, sad journalstc sensatonalsm goes back as far as 1835 wth James Gordon Bennett and hs paper The Herald. He sad thngs seem to have gotten worse today. Hayman sad ths s a problem wth large meda corporatons. Another pont s that celebrtes themselves are somewhat creatures of the meda. Hardenbergh sad the same was true of Dana. "People do realze that Prncess Dana needed the meda," she "She was very good at usng the meda." Paul also sad that celebrtes cannot have t both ways by usng the meda to promote themselves and then complanng f the meda s constantly houndng them. Melssa Manzella, a sophomore fashon major, sad the meda should not hound celebrtes. "They should not follow the celebrtes or whomever they're followng so closely," she She also sad there should be a law that the press has to be a certan amount of feet away. Matthew Halcy, a senor crmnal justce major, sad he does not lke the fact that Prncess Dana's death has overshadowed Mother Teresa's passng. "Stop puttng t on TV and recognze Mother Teresa," he "[The meda] make the royals to be somethng they're not. They don't recognze other thngs. Mother Teresa s on page 8 of the busness secton."

4 Edtoral Plunge head frst nto enrchng classes As prevously mentoned n our semester prevew ssue two weeks ago and our frst regular ssue today, the freshmen class have ndeed taken the campus by storm. They are very easy to spot. A few have come up to be askng questons about how to use e-mal or fnd a certan locaton on campus. It wll not take them long to get nto the swng of thngs. Also, as a frend of mne ponted out, many of them have an dentfyng characterstc: the combnaton ID cardkey chan hangng around ther neck. I never really understood ths concept. Ths seems to get phased out as the freshmen progress through the system. I never wore one my freshmen year. I do a lot of walkng around campus. To have had that thng floppng around my neck would have become annoyng and bothersome. In addton, I am a very clumsy person. I am afrad I would have done somethng lke get t caught n the door of a movng car, and. and strangle myself. Or less morbd, I would smply lose t. Yet as I look at these new students, I remember how dsapponted I was, academcally, wth my freshmen year. Iwas dong okay n my classes, but I dd not feel they were challengng enough. I was very frustrated by my freshmen year classes. I thought they were not very challengng, were somewhat unfocused, and some felt pontless. Ths semester, I am talkng what I consder to be some of the most nterestng and challengng THECIRCLEEDITORIAI; y September, 18,1997 classes of my college career. These nclude two specal topcs classes dealng wth the reform movements of the 1960s and the controversy over whether Presdent Harry Truman should have dropped the atomc bombs on Japan. In some ways, t was frustratng for me to have had to wat so long before takng classes lke these. Don't get me wrong, I am not basng the concept of havng a Core currculum. I thnk a Core currculum s essental to ensure that our students are more well-rounded. I thnk, however, that the currculum.should be more focused. More courses should be created especally for the Core program, lke Orgns of Modern Tmes. Perhaps there should be more courses fulfllng Core that are ted to a student's partcular major.. But most mportantly, I am sayng that the freshmen should be facng challenge rght from the get-go. I realze that takes them some tme to the college settng, but there s no reason why they can't plunge nto the academc waters head frst. Those of you who know me well, know that I have talked about ths topc before (even n The Crcle), so I wll stop beatng t to death. In short, my advce to freshmen: Get the most you can out of your frst-year classes. Don't blow them off. And most mportantly, stretch your mnd. Roosevelt Columnst collects cans and peace of mnd whle out runnng You know you're n Poughkeepse when the New York Tmes has the comcs. Yes, last. Sunday, as I lugged an exceptonally volumnous Sunday Edton back to the Md-Rse, a secton graced by the lkes of Charle Brown and Dlbert fell on to the pavement. At frst, I deemed ths to be a really fun and radcal change. Perhaps t was an attempt to accomodate Marst's vast populaton of Long Islanders, who may be somewhat wstful for the 'Truth, Justce, and the Comcs" of ther beloved "New York Newsday." I dsmssed ths noton when I opened the secton and found a full color ad for "Dck's Sportng Goods." It was boastng the latest n huntng apparel n exquste tree-bark hues. Clearly, the folks at the local bagel shop jammed the Poughkeepse Journal's comcs nto my paper. I really ddn't need a dsplaced comc secton to know that I'm n Poughkeepse. All I really needed to do was nhale. I am glad to be back, though I have seen far better days than today. Granted, everyone has a bad day here and there. I sometmes wonder f maybe I'm just havng a bad lfe and some days are just worse than others. You may be lookng at my lttle bylne at the end of ths column and thnkng to yourself, "Well, ths s supposed to be a humor column. Isn't t supposed to be funny? What's so funny about a bad day?" Earler, I was wonderng the same thng myself. I was pressed for deas. The only thng humorous that came to mnd was my humerusthat and every other achng bone n my body. I was runnng a cross country race aptly ttled "The Fordham Fasco." The frst mle of the course went smoothly and then t was downhll from there. Actually, READ Just when you thnk you couldn't possbly read another artcle dealng wth the freshmen, here's one more. The dfference s that ths s not some worrsome artcle about how the freshmen are dealng wth beng away from home or f they are eatng enough food or whether or not they get along wth ther new roommates. Ths s essentally a challenge. For those of you who have lved n a cave for the past year, the freshman class s the smartes statstcal class ever at Marst. So I would lke to explan, as one of the dumb senors, that there s more to college than SAT scores. College, more than anythng, s about learnng. That s the obvous answer and t s the truth. But that s not the end all be all of the college experence. I am not necessarly sayng that you have to go out and jon the course went UP hll. My stamna and my psyche on the other hand... In tmes when I don't lve up to my 'personal expectatons I have a tendancy to dwell on my faults. For nstance, today, as I struggled through the fnal stretch of my race, I began to thnk to myself, "Why am I here? Why do I run? Why am I n college?" Then, as I dug deeper and deeper r the realms of complete cyncsm, I thought, "Do I really deserve to be here? What am I ganng by beng here? What am I contrbutng? Why don't I just can t. In fact, - why don't I take up a more lucratve enterprse lke collectng cans? I'm guaranteed a nckel for every sngle can (Provded t s properly marked for depost). What does beng n college guarantee? Outrageous debt? Fouryearsoff of my lfe?" Luckly, those feelngs of rdculous angst were left on the course. Everyone has ther own lttle fasco now and then, no matter what they dp. Everyone feels defeated sometmes, even those flashy runway models. Have you ever looked at the shoes they have to wear? Well, maybe I'm thnkng of the agony of "de feet." There's always a guarantee of success f one concentrates on the postve thoughts and goals- the mental "cans," as opposed to "can'ts,"; are prceless compared to alumnum. And every so often, a lttle nce free-bee pops up- especally f you buy the Tmes at the Bagel Shop, Okay, so that was the sappest, cheesest, gloppy-gushest column I have ever wrtten. Tara Qunn s the Humor Columnst for The Crcle THE CIRCLE OPINION September, 18, News Flash: It's Okay To Walk On The Grass It's 9:20 on a Monday mornng. You're walkng to a class over n Dyson, strugglng through crowds of people, some comng out of ther 8:00 classes, others headng to ther 9:00 classes. As you hurry on your way, dodgng people along the narrow concrete walkways, you begn to notce somethng pecular, somethng that's been botherng you ever snce you've been gong to Marst; people just don't walk on the grass! What s t about Marst students that make us feel lke our beautful lawns are off lmts for walkng? Maybe t's gult. Every other day (t seems) somebody's but mowng the grass or fertlzng, or the sprnklers are on. Why should we step all over t when so much money s spent on keepng the "green" n perfect vewng condton? Is t lazness that keeps the average student from walkng on the green? That hardly seems to be the case. Many tmes t s shorter to smply walk across the lawn to get where you want to be. So, what s t then? Is t that people just don't lke to get mornng dew on ther shoes? We are lucky as Marst students to have our campus located n such an open, natural and pcturesque settng (as opposed to beng caged n on all sdes by a stone wall lke some other college we know around here). It seems ronc that the natural aspects of the campus are not more openly enjoyed by students. It s a puzzlng ssue, really. Are students beng more respectful of the grass by not tramplng all over t, or have we become concrete ourselves by forgettng the great feel of grass under our shoes? Everyone s enttled to walk where they wsh. Hey, I don't ALWAYS walk on the grass. Sometmes the dew gets to me too, but I always notce the people who do. I thnk to myself, that person s pretty neat to break out of the mold of walkng along the common path. So, ths message s for everyone: IT S OKAY TO WALK ON THE GRASS! Three senors took advantage of ther summer. Shannon Hrsch, senor fashon desgn major, took a twoweek journey to beautful England. Ryan Soucy, senor rado, TV, flm major, took a job of a lfetme, and Ern McHale, a senor crmnal justce had an ndescrbable experence. Hrsch sad England had a lot of meanng for her. "I went to England for two weeks at the end of May to early June," she "There s just somethng about the hstory there that made me want to go," she Hrsch saw several sghts whle over seas. One of her favorte was Wndsor Castle. "The Wndsor Castle was so beautful," she "It's a town that surrounds the castle." Hrsch vsted a few people from her chldhood whle there. "When I was growng up, I had a nanny from England, so I was able to vst her," she "I also got to vst one of my sororty ssters there." Soucy traveled around the country checkng up on the lghted world. "I worked for Musco Lghtng," he "I went around the country dong qualty checks from lttle league felds all the way to racng tracks." Soucy spent most of the summer travelng from state to state. "It was hard at frst," he "I was travelng wth another guy my age, and I ddn't know hm at all nthe begnnng. It was hard beng away from everyone." Soucy sad that choosng a job lke ths one wasn't the easest choce. "I realzed t was a great opportunty," he "I knew t would look great on my resume. I also knew I would see some great parts of the country. I got to see places lke Calforna, Tennessee, Mchgan, and parts of Toronto." Hrsch sad that England could not be compared to New York Cty. ' "England s so much cleaner," she "The people are ncer and the tube (subway) s so much more convenent than the subway n New York Cty." McHale dd not do much sght seeng as Hrsch and Soucy dd. McHale spent the summer boostng her confdence as well as learnng combat tactcs. "I went to the Offcer's Canddate School Marne Corps n Quantco, Vrgna," she "If I choose to, after graduaton, I can become a second leutenant n the Marnes." Whle Hrsch and Soucy were takng n the sghts, McHale was dong serous physcal tranng. "We had physcal tranng for about 10 hours every day," she "In between that, I took classes about how to be a leader, frst ad, the hstory of the Marnes, and a class about combat tactcs." McHale's decson came spontaneously last March. "The Marne's were on campus last year, and after talkng wth them, I became ver nterested," she sad All three sad ther summer of 1997 were great experences Soucy sad he was able to go to places not well known or vsted. "I went to so many places I probably would not ever have the chance of gong agan," he "I have never been to Myrtle Beach. I loved t there. I also went to Danel Boone's Natonal Forest. It was absolutely gorgeaous," he All three sad they dd not regret what they dd for the summer. Hrsch sad that f gven the chance, one must go to England. "England s really fashonable and so pretty," she Soucy sad travelng across the Untes States s an experence he wll not forget. "You learn a lot about yourself, travelng alone," he "I was able to see so much of the country. So many parts that I probably would not even thnk of vstng." McHale sad one could only gan from her experence. "When I started tranng, there were 54 grls;, but there were only 26 grls n my graduatng class," she sad: "You just can't explan t, t was the best experence I ever had. Mentors satsfy ths goal by organzng workshops, meetng wth freshmen on an ndvdual bass, and offerng themselves as a referral servce for students n need of help. Marybeth Dohemwend, mentor for Sheahan Hall, sad watchng students grow s an nsprng process. "It s nsprng to watch people empower themselves through educaton," she "Learnng about freedom and responsblty can be ntense. I lke knowng that I can help students wth that." Several of the workshops provded by the mentors are centered on the goal of academc success. Dohemwend provdes programs dealng wth tme management sklls and test takng. Carolyn Felder, Leo Hall mentor, holds workshops specfcally for assessng learnng sklls. She talks to students about learnng and studyng habts. Durng mdterms, she provdes hot meals to the students n her buldng. Although ths s not a job requrement, Felder sad she thnks t s mportant to gve students a break. "I lke to do ths because t gves them a chance to just relax for a whle after studyng for so long," she Felder also coordnates student faculty luncheons, and s the Greek Councl advsor. Sue Loznsk s the commuter mentor. Her offce s located n the Md-Rse Commuter Lounge. Loznsk shares many of the same goals as other mentors, but she sad, n some ways she may have more of a challenge. Because she works prmarly wth commuter students, Loznsk sad t s her job to "provde a lnk between lfe on campus, and lfe off campus." It s dffcult, she sad, because many of the club meetngs and actvtes are held durng evenng hours. Loznsk s also nvolved n the theater group. Mentors usually have a background n ether educaton or psychology. They are not consdered counselors, rather they are more of as a resource for students. If an ndvdual s lookng for some knd of counselng the mentor can refer hm to someone. Mentors are avalable durng offce hours f students would lke to dscuss problems they are havng adjustng to the college. Loznsk sad the best part of her job s beng able to help students. "I love ths job. I love helpng people navgate ther way through a system that can sometmes be frustratng," she Felder sad the most rewardng part for her s helpng students have a focus. "I lke knowng that students walk away from here knowng how to ask the rght questons. If you don't ask the rght questons you won't get the rght answer," she "I thnk maybe I've gven them some drecton, and then they come back and say 'Ths worked'. It makes t all worth t." Mentors also meet wth students on academc probaton n order to help them get ther grades up.. Sophomore Ker Stevenson sad havng a mentor made freshman year more bearable. "I really loved havng a mentor as a freshman," she "I always knew that there was someone I could talk to." 7 * = * THE CIRCLE September 18,1997 THE CIRCLE, September, 18, Takng a Closer Look at Spreadng the Rage: Hard core group rocks 18,000 ragng fans n Meadowlands, New Jersey bycarlito StaffWrter From a conservatve's standpont, Rage Aganst the Machne jonng forces wth Wu- Tang Clan for a tour of thrty ctes s a nghtmare come to lfe. But Zack de larocha sn't concerned about pleasng the conservatve publc. The lead snger and lyrcst for Rage announced at the begnnng of the tour that, "We're not gong to play to the manstream, we're gong to hjack t." ~..;. Havng attended the August 20th show at The Meadowlands n New Jersey, I can honestly say that "hjack" was a bt of an understatement. I am roughly as conservatve, as Frank Zappa but when I heard Rage chose Wu-Tang to rde shotgun for ther tour I antcpatedrots, fres, and mass destructon. ( Ed. Note-the fre, and destructon wated untl crazed fans almost destroyed the Meadows Musc Theater n Hartford). Smply put I saw ntertwnng the two muscal cultures ( hp-hop and hardcore) nto one arena as a' very bad dea. Suprsngly enough though, the only volence that exsted n' what was the most brutal mosh pt I have ever encountered; one that envelopeduhe entre floory level from the moment Wu-Tang"' took the stage untl Rage fnshed ther encore hours later. Along for the rde were ndustral/techno Brts Atar Teenage Rot, who captvated the aud-. ence wth bonejarrng bass and crafty spnnng by DJ Carl Crack. Vocalsts Hann Elas and Alec Empre shouted ther nonconformst deologes n songs ' ',., - ' '.. Pholo courtesy of Da\c Etzold Members of Rage, (from left Tom Morello, Brad Wlk, Tmmy C, and Zack de la Rocha) take a break. lke "Start the Rot" and "Sck to Death." The Berln based tro receved sympathetc cheers from the audence but the band hadn't even fnshed ther set when the "Wu-Tang" chants began. To be utterly honest, most rap makes me nautous, so when the Clan took the stage I dd hot exactly wet my pants from exctement. But when Drty 01* rbastard broke rto'an exceptonally scratchy verson of "Raw"; I notced a hemorrhagng of the neck and cranum. After several sessons wth my therapst t was brought to my attenton I' may have actually enjoyed portons of Wu-Tang's performance. RZA (pronounced Rzza) and Method Man delvered the most stellar performances from the nne member hp-hop crew. Most of the lyrcs were muffled and ndecpherable but the group's ntensty level remaned hgh throughout the show. After the Clan departed, those that ween't satsfed wth ther assgned seats executed a textbook fashoned bum-rash ofthe'' floor level. Possessed by"'the moment, I deserted my frends - wthout a word ard took off to Tjon "'th^maykem: Three'clvd?" ' ers and a couple of wnd sprnts later I was n the front row. I'll gve the bouncers' and "E" for effort n ther attempts to control the anarchy but there were ten adrenlzed Rage fans for every bouncer. Even for the sterod pumpng Neanderthals, the rato was not workng n ther favor so they eventually surrendered to the flood of people. After the longest twenty mnutes of my lfe, the lghts went out. Zack walked out followed by gutarst Tom Morello, bassst Tmmy C, and drummer Brad Wlk.Wthout a word they dove nto "People okthe-sun" and I have-never seen a crowd erupt qucker: What was estmated as,_fouktfousand, people crammed hto'a'n area the sze of a hockey' rnk nstantly transformed nto a fght for survval. Plowng through the frst three songs of the set wth unbrdled emoton, Zack unleashed fve hundred years of Natve Amercan op-, presson wth every vocal shrek. Thrty seconds nto "Bombtrack" the evenng took an unexpected turn. Zack was dong hs usual mpersonaton of a Mexcan jumpng bean on crystal meth when he twsted hs ankle and fell to the floor. 18,000 hearts stopped beatng for the several mnutes t took the medcs to examne the snger. Fnally one announced that Zack would ce down hs ankle and see f he could return. For ffteen mnutes vsons ofthe L.A. rots danced n my head. An arena full of dsgruntled youths bubblng wth adrenalne and yearnng to take out ther suppressed anger on anyone or anythng. But then, lke a one-legged messah, Zack came lmpng out to the crowds amplfed applause. Asde from Trent Reznor of Nne Inch Nals, I've never seen a snger dsplay such legtmate wrath. Runnng through flawless rendtons of older songs lke "Know Your Enemy" and "Bullet n the Head", as well as newer tracks ncludng "Bulls on Parade" and "Vetnow." Welcome to Jm and Frends Ht the Road, a new weekly column n the Crcle whch can serve as both a travel gude and cat box lner! Ths summer I had the good fortune to embark on a seres of road trps and travels to places I've never seen before. Ths column comes mostly from my personal journals. In the next few weeks, you too can feel the experence of gong on the long road to nowhere wth an eccentrc cast of characters rangng from myself and travelng companons to a htchhker we pcked up who made hs lvelhood makng nflatable wener dogs. Some of the most nterestng people I've met have been sojourners pausng a rest stop, AT hkers lookng for ardeto the next lodge, farmers on the sdes of drt roads n Northern Mane. To try to condense t all nto a sngle weekly column s dffcult because so many lttle thngs happen along the way. Nonetheless, to the best of my memory here s the summer of 1997 through the eyes of a 21 year old boy. After two mnutes of hearng my good frend wnce and shrek, I told hm tme was tp. Mark sld hs head back n and rolled up the wndow^ Have you ever seen that part of Slence of the Lambs where the bad rps off some other guy's face? Ths s knd of what he looked lke, only worse. Mark took atowel and wped most of the goop on hs face, whch only smeared t. He sld off the goggles and held out hs hand. He looked lke a reverse raccoon, but a very proud reverse raccoon. Not only dd he have myfvedollars but he had my respect as well. We were on our way to Camel's Hump n Waterbury,Vermont, a modest peak of about 4,300 ft. The drve from Connectcut was about sx hours and we had no functonng rado. Four and half hours nto the trp we began to get a lttle slly. Anythng to pass the tme! Outsde of Mark's endurance test, the rde was father peaceful. The day was May 30th, a few weeks after school had gotten out. I fgured Camel's Hump was a nce day hke so off we went. - The hke tself was a pleasantly strenuous 8 mle loop. For the most part, I'd rather not try to explan the actual feelng ofthe event tself; that s somethng beyond words that must be experenced for oneself. I wll say the steep ascent led to a cy, snow flled path up to summt. It was neat marchng through four feet of snow wth shorts on n the end of May. It was not neat havng our shns slced up by the crusty ce edges that bt nto our legs every tme one of us fell through the top layer of snow. The vews were ncredble and the solaton was beautful. As we were wthn a hundred vertcal feet of the summt, the entre mountan was engulfed n hck cloud cover. The tree lne ended and the rare alpne area began. Camel's Hump was vod of snow. Hgh wnds pushed us around but we bouldered bravely to the pnnacle. Ths mountan has a unque story to t, one I couldn't push out of my mnd as I stood on one ofthe hghest ponts n Vermont. In World War two, an Amercan bomber flyng over Vermont's skes got lost n thck cloud cover and smashed nto the sde of Camel's Hump, a mere ffty feet below where I was. Ths tme around, t's pretty easy. For the frst tme n the hstory of the college, every sngle Dvson I athlete at Marst College wll be competng n the Metro Atlantc Athletc Conference. If that's not mportant, I don't know what s. On July 1, Marst offcally became the tenth full member of. the MAAC, -jonng Cansus, Farfeld, Iona, Loyola, Manhattan, Nagara, Rder, St. Peter's, and Sena. The Red Foxes wll fght for the MAAC crown n 22 of the league's 23 sports. Golf s the lone excepton. Why the move? "We'd been tryng for years to move to the MAAC," sad Drector of Athletcs Tm Murray. "As Marst changed as an nsttuton, we wanted the athletc program to mrror the academc progress that had been made." In the years leadng up to the bg move, Marst's overall reputaton had begun to "outgrow" the Northeast Conference. It was consdered both approprate and desrable to jon a more academcally and athletcally prestgous group of schools. Wth all the grace and savvy of a blnd sloth, he fell over to the lght swtch and last sprng, the Red Foxes sad good-bye to the NEC. The move s certanly a step up for the Red Foxes. For starters, t wll ncrease Marst's vsblty and credblty n the New York metropoltan area, snce several of the MAAC's schools are based n or near the cty. The men's basketball team, for example, wll have at least three games televsed to a New York Cty audence.. "The ncreased exposure from the basketball teams wll help get the college's name out there," sad Murray. "It's smlar to MIPO (Marst Insttute of Pollng) n that way." Speakng of basketball, who remembers Fran Frachlla's Manhattan Jaspers? A few years ago, the Jaspers crused through an mpressve.regular season but were upset n the MAAC post-season conference tournament. Most small conferences, ncludng the NEC, only send one team to the NCAA Basketball Tournament-- the wnner of the conference tourney. That team s usually a 15 or 16 seed, and gets spanked by North Carolna as thefrststep on the Tarheels' road to.ther 817th Fnal Four appearance. Had Manhattan been n the low profle NEC n 1995, ther. But the NCAA Selecton Commttee looked at the Jasper's mpressve season and awarded the team ah at-large bd one of those spots n the Bg Dance usually reserved for the seventh place team n the Bg Ten. In 1995, the MAAC stole one of those berths and actually had fwo teams n the Feld of 64. Manhattan made the most of the opportunty. They upset fourth-seeded Oklahoma n the frst round, and nearly beat Arzona State for a spot n the Sweet Sxteen. "An at-large bd would never have even been talked about n the NEC," admtted Murray. But t's a realty n the MAAC. Whch means Marst has suddenly become a lot more respectable to the Dck Vtales and Blly Packers of the world. You mght even see a Red Fox hghlght or two on ESPN dur- ng March Madness. Marst's admnstrators aren't the only people excted about the change. Red Fox coaches and athletes welcome the move to the MAAC, a conference that benefts from better fundng and more energetc leadershp than the NEC. It makes lfe easer for fans, also. RYAN Staff Wrter Ask any coach at any level what the key to wnnng football games s, and nevtably turnovers and specal teams wll be at the top of ther lst. Marst head coach Jm Parady s no dfferent. Parady watched hs team turn the ball overfvetmes and mss a short feld goal and an extra pont n a loss to the Georgetown Hoyas (1-0,1-0). For Parady and the Red Foxes (0-1,0-1), t was a case of makng mstakes aganst the wrong team at the wrong tme. "Any game you play n you don't want to have mstakes," the sxth-year coach "But you always seem to have more n that frst game because you haven't been on the feld n about eght months.". That s why the Hoyas, who Marst hasn't beaten n four tres, were such a tough draw for the Red Foxes n the opener. Wth 15 starters returnng from last year's 7-3 team, Georgetown s clearly one of the elte teams n the Metro Atlantc Athletc Conference-^ not a team whch affords you the opportunty to ron out you problems. Those problems started early for Marst, as they lost a fumble on ther openng possesson. After the defense forced the Hoyas to punt, Red Foxes quarterback Jm Daley's pass rcocheted nto the hands of lnebacker Mke Lynn at the Marst 37. Georgetown captalzed on the mstake, movng the ball to the 22 to set up a Peter Carbonara 39 yardfeldgoal and a3-0hoyalead. Nether team scored for the rest of the half. Marst was fortunate to be down by only three ponts, havng commtted four frst-half turnovers. On the other hand, the Red Fox defense allowed only 30 yards of total offense n the half, held second team All-MAAC runnng back Steve Ioro to -23 yards on sx carres* and mssed a 20-yard feld goal. So perhaps the Hoyas were the ones feelng lucky after two quarters. Bates agreed wth the latter theory. "They really couldn't run on us at all n thefrsthalf," the junor defensve end "We really wanted to stop the run early and we dd." The Red Foxes receved the second half kckoff, and almost mmedately there was a notceable dfference from thefrsthalf. Daley quckly completed two short passes underneath before connectng wth Reed, who fnshed the day wth sx receptons for 118 yards, on a 26-yard gan to the Hoya 25. Two plays later, junor runnng back J.J. The women runners feel especally fortunate, after escapng the shadow of the Mount. "Overall, the MAAC s a step up from the NEC," sad women's coach Phl Kelly. "But n crosscountry, t's not, because there's no team as domnatng as Mount St. Mary's. The league s wde open." And Kelly's Red Foxes beleve they have a chance to waltz n and clam the MAAC ttle mmedately. "We've got a chance to wn the thng n our frst year n the league," clamed Kelly. That's a sentment that was renforced after a strong showng from Marst's women at the Fordham Fasco on Saturday, held at Van Cordtland Park n Brooklyn, NY. The Foxes fnshed eghth out of seventeen teams, n what Kelly called a "very hgh qualty meet." Yale Unversty grabbed the top spot on Saturday, and squads from Harvard, Brown, Penn, St. John's, St. Joe's, and Fordham also fnshed ahead of Marst. "It's a real tough meet," explaned Kelly. "You're talkng about teams from the.ivy League, the Bg East, and the Atlantc 12. We dd about as well as I fgured we'd do." The Red Foxes enjoyed some ndvdual efforts that bode well for the future. Four of the team's topfvefnshers were freshmen or sophomores. Marst's male runners also came home from Brooklyn feelng good about themselves, havng fnshed nnth out of seventeen competng schools on a swelterng day n New York Cty. Ben Hefferon led the charge for Marst; the junor out of Ketcham Hgh School fnshed 18th out of almost 200 runners. "Ben's our leader, no doubt about t. Anthony Nero, Joe Scela, and Greg Salamone compose a nce nucleus that Colazzo expects bg thngs from. "Ths s the best freshman class we've ever had," sad the coach.
