STS Cheerleading Season

RESPONSIBILITY SPIRIT LEADERSHIP 1/26/2012 Dear Students and Parents, The words above represent what a STS cheerleading is all about. We expect our cheerleaders to exhibit these qualities at all times. Having positive attitudes, following rules, showing respect, following directions, showing school spirit, and being the best middle school student one can be are all a big part of being a St. Timothy s cheerleader. When all of these things are in place, all involved have a more positive experience with cheerleading. Cheerleading is a MAJOR commitment. For the school year, the cheerleaders will cheer for all home basketball games, and possible two away games. STS Cheerleaders will also prepare and participate in four pep rallies. If you are involved in other activities, please consider the time commitment involved in being an STS cheerleader. We expect every girl to be present at every practice and every game with the exception of emergency situations. Last minute practices may be scheduled if coaches see fit. Please notify the coaches 72 hours in advance if your daughter is unable to participate in a game, practice or pep rally. We will not accept notifications after 72 hours. St. Timothy s cheerleading is about following the rules, showing school spirit, being a leader, and having fun. It is a major commitment that we want each girl and her family to carefully consider before joining the team. We look forward to meeting and working with each one of you in the upcoming season! GO TITANS- Coach Kimmy and Coach Lauren 1

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TITANS CHEERLEADER To realize the cheerleading squad exists to PROMOTE school spirit through behavior, actions, attitude, and words, and cheer for the basketball teams. We exist to support the sports teams. To LEAD the crowd in cheers to encourage the basketball teams. To maintain pep, positive attitudes, and be ENCOURAGING at all times when representing STS at school, school functions, and community functions. To be PROFESSIONAL in appearance and behavior when representing STS, including during the school day. To maintain RESPECT in behavior, actions, and words to: 1. Fellow squad members, 2. Coaches, 3. Parents, 4. Students, 5. Faculty, 6. STS fans and 7. Other schools students and fans. Cheerleaders, by name, are LEADERS. When people choose to take on leadership positions, then other people expect more of those leaders. Leaders set good examples in the community, at school in the hallways and classrooms, at other schools, at practice, etc. MORE will be expected of you if you decide to try out and if you do make the squad. Cheerleading is a big commitment and responsibility. 2

IN ORDER TO BE AN STS CHEERLEADER, YOU MUST: 1. PROVIDE the STS sports physical form completed by your physician. The physical form must be turned in by no later than MAY 23 rd! Consequences will be discussed and handled according to the severity of the crime. 7. MEET all standards of STS s athletic academic policy. This policy is provided in the athletic handbook. 3

CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS During summer camp, participants will learn two dances, chants and cheers. The coaches will select which routines will be performed. Depending on the number of girls, cheerleaders will tryout in groups as small as three and as large as five, in front of expert judges. The girls will be judged on their technique, kicks, jumps, tumbling, memorization, and STS spirit. Day of Tryouts Cheerleaders will arrive no later than 1:00pm. Cheerleaders will register and receive a tryout number. Cheerleaders will follow the coaches in a warm up and stretch. Cheerleaders will review two dances, chant and cheer. Cheerleaders will then begin tryouts. Note: Those who are not in the first group will be directed outside to continue practicing until it is their turn During Tryouts Cheerleaders will show the judges the following: o Kicks o Motions o Jumps o Tumbling (if able) o Memorization and Execution of: Dance (s), Chant (s), and Cheer (s) Once finished trying out, the girls will be escorted into the locker room until all girls have tried out. Judges will have twenty to thirty minutes to tally scores and deliberate. Cheerleaders will be announced at the end of the day. Two squads will be chosen for the season: a Blue Squad and a White Squad. The Blue squad will attend some away games and both squads will cheer ALL home games. HINT: SMILES and STS SPIRIT go a LONG WAY 4

ESTIMATED CHEERLEADING TIME COMMITMENT PRACTICES Practices will be held every week with exception of Holiday s and school breaks. Cheerleaders will have practice at least once a week on Saturdays. Practices will be added in advance if Coaches see extra practice time is needed. Practices will be held in the gymnasium, unless otherwise announced. A schedule with dates and times will be provided after tryouts. A meeting will be scheduled and held prior to the season. Coaches and parents will discuss the schedule, expectations and concerns. BASKETBALL SEASON During November through February, the cheerleaders will participate in ALL home Blue and White, girls and guys basketball games. On average, there will be two games per week. Some weeks, cheerleaders will participate in three games. Selected Blue Squad will attend selected away games. Blue and White Squads will attend ALL home games. During winter exam week, all 8 th graders are excused from participating in basketball games. Cheerleaders are expected to attend every practice and every game, unless otherwise excused for an emergency situation. 5

CHEERLEADING RULES AND REGULATIONS The following is a list of rules and regulations to assist you in being a successful STS cheerleader for the school year. The rules stand as stated. There will be no discussion over an infraction. Each cheerleader must have a current physical on file at STS. It is the responsibility of the cheerleader and her parents to make sure that the physical stays current. Cheerleaders are expected to meet the standards of the school s athletic academic policy. Cheerleaders are expected to be at every game and practice. Excused absences may include, but are not limited to personal illness, illness in the family, death in the family, religious holidays. Cheerleaders must talk with the coaches about missing practices or games prior to the absence. (Please see attached information sheet with the coaches contact information). o Notification of an absence received after the 72 hours policy and is not related to illness or an emergency will be considered as a warning. o An unexcused absence will result in one demerit. Two unexcused absences will result in sitting out one game and one demerit. Note: During basketball season, sitting out one game entails sitting out both a boys game and a girls game in the same night. 3 offenses = 1 warning 3 warnings = 1 demerit 5 demerits = Removal from the squad Please see the following page for consequence chart. If a cheerleader has an injury, she is still expected to be present and support the squad during practices and games. Cheerleaders are expected to wear cheerleading shoes at all times including before/ during/ and after practices, games, and any other event in which cheerleaders are involved. Cheerleaders are to refrain from tumbling if the coaches are not present. If a cheerleader is absent from school on the day of a game or practice, she may not attend these events. 6

Cheerleaders are not permitted to wear ANY jewelry during practices, games or at any other event in which cheerleaders are involved. Cheerleaders are not allowed to wear fingernail polish during games. Cheerleader s hair must be pulled back in a secure ponytail for practices and games. Food and drinks are not permitted in the cheer area. Cheerleaders may consume food or drink during halftime away from the cheer area. Every cheerleader is expected to maintain a professional image at all organized events. It is important that cheerleaders represent STS in a positive manner. Respecting the leadership of the coaches and captains is vital to the success of a squad. Disrespect or disregard of direction from authority will not be tolerated. On the same hand disrespect from a captain to a squad member will not be tolerated. The cheerleaders will encourage one another! All cheerleading practices are closed with only the coach and cheerleaders present. All decisions made by the coaches regarding any aspect of cheerleading are final. If issues shall arise, see that you contact the coaches first regarding the matter and not administration. 7

CONSEQUENCES ACTION Excused absence not received prior to the 72hrs notice policy and is not related to illness, or an emergency, or religious holiday.
