1 Hello everyone, PALESTINE ISD Friday, February 8, 2013 Palestine ISD is excited to announce the launch of a new service that will enhance communication by allowing us to deliver important information to parents and staff via SMS text messaging. This service is not intended to replace our existing means of communication rather to enhance them. The district will only use the service to provide information that is timely and relevant. The District is currently in the planning stages and we hope to begin the service this spring. Information on how to request the text messaging option and further details will be sent to parents and staff prior to the service beginning. A Princess Ball was held this week at Washington Early Childhood Center. The little princesses enjoyed a wonderful evening learning ballroom etiquette and of course to dance. Thank you to Mrs. Herrington for planning this annual event for the students. Our boys and girls basketball teams continue their fight for the playoffs. For the girls, a win against Groesbeck in Fairfield tomorrow will secure their playoff spot. For the boys, a win against Rusk next Tuesday, February 12th will send them to the playoffs. 3 WILDCAT BASKETBALL The Boys Basketball Team will play Rusk on Tuesday, (2/12/13) - Varsity plays at 7:30 pm. The winner will be in the playoffs and will face Jasper on Tuesday (2/19/13) at Angelina College or Lufkin High School. SOCCER Boys and girls soccer begin district play on Tuesday (2/12/13), 5:30 pm at Lufkin Hudson. POWERLIFTING Powerlifting Meet at Fairfield H.S. Thursday, (2/21/13), 5:00 pm. SOFTBALL Girls Softball will officially open their season on Tuesday (2/12/13) at Madisonville. The first home game will be on Tuesday (2/19/13) vs Leon at 6:00 pm. 5 PHS News - Way to go Wildcat Choir and Youth and Government participants! On Saturday, February 2nd, high school choir members performed a memorized selection at their TMEA sponsored, Solo and Ensemble Competition at Whitehouse High School. The students performed very well. This past weekend, our students participated in the 66th Annual Texas YMCA Youth & Government State High School Conference in Austin. 7 On Friday, February 1, middle school choir members performed a memorized selection for judges at their TMEA sponsored, Solo and Ensemble competition at Robert E Lee High School in Tyler. Seventh grade members, Christopher Freeman, Dominique Lacy, and Alexia Robinson, and eighth grade member, Jessica Valencia, received a Superior rating, while seventh grader, Lauren- Kay Potter, and eighth grader, Alexia Smith, received an Excellent rating. Mrs. Williams is preparing for upcoming cheerleading elections. We will be holding an afterschool camp for sixth and seventh grade students interested in trying out for next year. We are holding celebrity elections this week. We are all looking forward to see who our campus identifies as outstanding students by their peers. Next week will be a week of celebration as our student council sells vintage valentines to be delivered Thursday. We will also be hosting an end of the day reward dance to celebrate students who choose to make good decisions and have exemplary behavior. Basketball season concluded for the middle school LadyCats with their final match against Fairfield Monday evening. The girls showed improvement throughout the season and are looking forward to spring sports. Larissa Loveless, Principal 7

9 This week at Story, PTO kicked off the Spring Fundraiser. Students that sell at least 5 items are being entered into a drawing and one is chosen each day for a prize. Students that sell 8 or more will enjoy the big party in March and those that sell 15 will get to ride in a limo! Students who read and passed five Texas Bluebonnet books got to vote for their favorite Bluebonnet book. These votes were submitted to Austin to determine the Texas winning book. The winner for Story School was the book called Just Being Audrey. Students who voted were treated to a free Texas Bluebonnet Book. These students were Latavia Henderson, Cristina Barrientez, Ladasha McDowell, Lilly Rink and Jennifer Santos. Sports clinics are learning the techniques of the game of tennis. Students must maintain an average of 85% or higher each six weeks to participate. Brandon Jayroe, Principal Valentine s Day Parties for 4th and 5th grade classes will be held on Thursday, February 14 at 2:30 pm. 9

10 Southside students truly are WILD about learning This week Southside implemented its Character Program called 8 Keys to a Better Me. Each day students are recognized for exhibiting good character such as Honesty, Respect, Patriotism, Kindness, Courage, Responsibility, and Feelings of Self-Worth. On Tuesday Southside celebrated the 100 th day of school! As part of the celebration, students participated in a T-Shirt decorating contest, received awards for being the 100 th car rider, 100 th bus rider, and 100 th person in the lunch line. What a Blast!
