The acton followed debate among the member clubs as to "whether communsm should be Sngled out from other forms of totaltaransm as the greatest threat to the Unted States. \HFAC's orgnal am, when the group was formed last week wth JL membershp of nne clubs, was the wagng of an ant-communst fght on campus. Martn Gruberg, representng the Natonal Assocaton for the Advancement of Colored People, sad at UCATs meetng yesterday that "by not fghtng aganst all other forms of oppresson we weaken our ant-communst case and leave ourselves open to attacks by Marxsts." The Russo-Amercan Socety opposed ths stand, and countered wth an amendment to the anttotaltaransm njoton. t stated that the unted clubs recognze communsm as the "Overshadowng" danger to freedom. The amendment was defeated '5-3, wth the Socety, the Students for Amerfeansm, and the Young Republcans the dssenters. Al Klugerman, of the Young Democrats, was elected UCAT's charman. He sad that "we welcome all those democratc organzatons on campus who are opposed to totaltaransm n-all ts forms." However, Wecker ponted out that people who have fled requests for adjustments before the deadlne, wll be attended to after Novemfcer 2. Whle the UBE handled fewer books ths term than last Sprng, much of the absence of long lnes and delays can be attrbuted to the adopton of new procedures. These centered around the openng of Room 00 Army Hall for sellng book cards, nstead of the old system, whereby cards were purchased n the book exchange tself. After the UBE closed, Roojn.00 was retaned as an offce, and payment of money and return-of books has been carred out there n accordance wth regularly scheduled hours. nsde OP Mcroflm records hstory n compact form Page 4. BHE Report: Cty Colleges' Enrollment Up The four muncpal colleges of New York Cty have doubled ther enrollment n the last ten years, accordng to the annual report of the Board of Hgher Educaton. The report, ssued on Sunday by Dr. Joseph B. Cavallaro, charman of the Board, revealed hat Cty, Hunter, Brooklyn and Queens Colleges had enrollments last sprng of 68,75, compared wth 34,05 n 944. The report also noted that Cty College, wth the most students 30,03 spent $,907,675; Brooklyn College, wth 20,68, spent $8,945,903; Hunter College wtd 2,084, spent $6,006,594 and Queens College wth 5,850 spent $4,860,04. State fnancal ad, whch was M per cent j 944, had ncreased to more than twenty-three per cent ths year, and was a major factor n offsettng a sharp drop n Federal ad. Federal assstance amounted to almost $3,000,- 000 n 944, compared wth $400,000 n , when most of the World War veterans had left the campuses. Although almost 6,000 veterans of the Korean War now attend the four colleges, the report dd not reflect ther presence, as Federal funds are now pad drectly to the veterans nstead of to the colleges, as n the past. The colleges have,964 teachers n ther day sessons and 2,30 employed n the evenng classes. The average salary for the day teachers was $6,936 whle the others, who were employed on an hourly bass, averaged about $,225. The report was prepared by J. Harvey Can, fnancal offcer of the board. He sad that state ad few teacher educaton, whkto amounted to $6,78,007 made pos- sble an ncrease n the varety The offce wll be open ths and scope of programs n ths Frday from 0:00 AM to 2:00 j feld. Tuton-free ffty-year programs for teachers have been de PM. Students are urged to meet the deadlne. veloped at all of the colleges. UNDERGRADUATE NEWSPAPER OF CTY COLLEGE Wat... A watng lst for tckets to the Thanksgvng Prom has been nsttuted n the offce of Mr. rvng Slade, Central Treasurer, n Room 20 Man. Fred srael, co-charman of the Student Councl Prom Commttee, explaned that, whle all tckets to the November 25 affar are sold out, fhose reserved and not pad for may be sold to people on the watng lst. Tckets are $4 per coupler Poltcal Club Formed Here; Vtalsm'Am "Plus," an organzaton newly created for poltcal "Vtalsm and Maturty" n vew of "amorphous unted fronts" at Cty College, was granted a tentatve charter by Student Councl's Executve Monday nght. Councl wll revew the charter at ts meetng today. The new group's consttuton takes sharply to task exstng poltcal condtons at the College. t purports to fll a need created by "poltcal apathy" rsng from the present "malfunctonng, nactve" clubs, whose leadershp s "marvelottsly?g ted. n poltckng, connvng, neptness, or downrght lazness." Another result of the nadequacy of present groups, "Plus" declares, s the formng of vaguely lberal organzatons whch', by "mpudence," could endanger the prncples they try to defend. Certan exstng movements were sngled out for attack: the All- College Commttee on Academc Freedom, the Green Feather drve, and the Unted Front Aganst Communsm. "Plus" decred "the falure to separate volatons of ntellectual freedom from attempts to make martyrs of certan ndvduals, the falure to recognze the courageous teacher who refuses to sacrfce scruples n exchange for job securty from the mountebank who uses hs poston to gan converts for a movement." Martn Gruberg, former SC member, s one of "Plus" founders. Two of the organzatons cted by "Plus" have come under fre recently. The unchartered All- Collqge Commttee on Academc Freedom has been shown to have llegally solcted funds, whle one of the- orgnators of the Green Feather ant-mccarthy drve was revea.ed not to be a student. The attack s based on a joke n the last Mercury whch the News clams uses a "chef tenet" of the Catholc fath for the subject matter of a "suggestve joke." The tenet referred to s the Catholc belef n the vrgn brth of Jesus Chrst. n answerng the attack, Ronald Rower, Managng Edtor of the magazne sad, "Although we dd not mean to offend and have apologzed, the extreme to whch ths affar has been carred s rdculous." Parsons (Englsh), was that the joke was based on the unqueness of the vrgn brth and therefore the doctor was subtly hntng that the young lady was a lar." The artcle further asserts that by usng the offcal seal of Cty College n ts mast, the magazne gves the mpresson that t s an offcal publcaton of the College. Ths, t charges, "seeks to gve the mpresson that they speak for all or part of the College" whle actually "t s the only unoffcal publcaton at the College." Under an arrangement worked, out by the Day Sesson SFFC last month, the Evenng Sesson Student Councl agreed to pay one thrd of the costs toward the Tech News budget. The newspaper's funds for ths semester now total $960, $640 of whch was alloted by the Day Sesson Student Councl. They had orgnally asked $,250, but that sum was whttled down by SFFC. Controversy was. strred when Tech News frst made publc ts plans to start an Engneerng newspaper. The arguments aganst Tech News were based on the grounds that t would be a waste of student funds, and would only duplcate exstng publcatons. The edtors of Tech News answered ths by sayng that they were fllng a gap made by "nadequate" coverage by Obserraton Post and Campus of School of Technology events. The publcaton plans to publsh b-weekly for the beneft of both Day and Evenng sesson students.

Accordng to Mss Benzng, 365 more pnts are needed. Ths fgure takes nto account the fact that some of those who sgn do not show up because of llness. Prospectve donors have untl ths Frday to sgn up at any one of the booths located around the College. More Students on Fee Comm., Faculty 5 Asks The Commttee of Fve, a faculty group whch was organzed by Presdent Buell G. Furthermore the commttee members suggested that organzaton fee appropratons should be passed frst by the College Fee Commttee and only then be okayed by the Student ^Faculty Fee Commttee. At the present tme fee appropratons are passed upon by the Student-Faculty Fee Commttee wthout the pror approval of the all-student group. Cty land Strkes Up Tune n Bandstand & Grandstand By DEB WESSTEN The sprt of 76 stll lves at Cty College. From the orgnal ffe, flute and drum corps,, a larger troupe ncludng trumpets, trombones, horns, oboes and clarnets has emerged. After the concluson of World War One, the Cty College Band was formed as an adjunct to the Mltary Scence Department. As?' the years went on the group took part n more and more actvtes. Band musc can now be heard at athletc events, Commencement, ROTC Revews and Charter Day. The band reachced cty-wde fame, when t took part n a parade on Ffth Avenue n honor of Greater New York's Golden Jublee n 948. The band now serves as a corollary to group actvtes. Professor Walter Nalln (Musc), leader of the band, notes that students who attend the athletc contests go to take part n the whole affar, and the band s as mpo'rttant to a sports event as the Coca Cola, hot dogs and cheerleaders The Professor feels, however, that the curtalment of athletc actvtes has hurt both the band and school sprt. He looks forward to the day when athletcs wll agan play a larger part n campus affars. He would lke to see basketball played n more spacous quarters where the seatng capacty would be greater and where the band would have an opportunty to agan fgure more ^promnently n^ college lfe. Because there s not enough room for the whole band at basketball games held n the Cty College gym, a "Beaver" or "Pep" Band has been organzed consstng of ten players. Professor Nalln also thnks that although there s consderable nterest n gongs-on at the College, school sprt suffers from the fact that ths s not a campus college. He ponts out that at Harvard "anyone who s anyone" attends the games. The student body lves at Cambrdge and the wlole town turns out to watch the partcular event. Many Cty College students lve n out of the reach places and those who would ordnarly attend the functons are dscouraged by the dstance. "We envson the band as havng a dual purpose: to provde opportuntes for student muscans to partcpate n a group for ther ed2caton and enjoyment, to provde further study n ther nstrument; and to be of servce to the school at such affars as Alumn Day, Commencement, etc.," says Professor NaMn. 4 Peg Four THE OBSERVATON POST VJedneuky, November Revews 'Rng' Round Dramsoc n attemptng to do Jean Anoulh's "Rng Round the Moon" last weekend, bt off more than t could chew, and almost choked. Watchng the frst act was lke tunng n on "One Man's Famly." The hodge-podge of characters, plots and counter plots called for a score-sheet rather than a program. The stuatons whch kept the characters contused throughout the play dd almost as much wth the audence. But consderng the Levathan they were workng wth, the actors dd a farly credtable jdb. Ed Heffernan, who drected the play, handled the dffcult twn roles of Hugo and Frederc, wth consderable skll. Hs rufelbery TxKy adapted tself especally well n the role of the datoolcal but goodhearted Frederc 'and hs flexble drecton proved generally smooth. Dors Label's performance as sabel, was a bt straned and smacked of lne-readng rather than actng. Ths was too dffcult a role for a tyro to perform (blame for ths should go to the castng drector rather than to Mss Label, who shows some talent.. The aforementoned players were good but only good. There Wasserthelj were two outstandng. Zara Anelan was hlarously successful as the frothy Lady nda. She shows excellent talent and versatlty on the stage (she played a dramatc role n "The Glass Menagere" last term wth equal success), and s sure to some day make her mark on the Broadway stage. Equally excellent was Burton Cohen (Messerschmann) who 'made the audence roar wth laughter every tme he spoke. Hs control and mastery of hs roles moves me to predct a Broadway future for hm also. Lttle wonder these two got bravos from the audence at ther curtan call. They well deserved them. Of the others only Ed Zang n hs abbrevated role of Romanvle deserves prase. The rest of the performances were ether nexperenced or nept. Nether nexperenced nor nept, however, were the costumes and set by Esther Small. The set was the best have yet seen n a College presentaton; the costumng was perfectly attuned to the play. But then ths s only expected from Mss Small. n ths presentaton Dramsoc reached for the moon and faled. hope ther next producton wll be more down to earth. Brtsh General Goofed; Hstory Prof. Tells Why By PAUL WESSLER Bad strategy may have cost the Brtsh the Revolutonary War, accordng to Professor Joseph E. Wsan, Charman of the Hstory Department. -O- The Professor took an excurson nto Dxe last term, and stopped at Yorktown, scene of the successful Amercan and French sege aganst Lord Charles Cornwalls and hs army. Profes have had skmpy background for the War of ndependence. At the age of twenty-three he served n the army for one year of duty n Germany. He -was soon apponted to such postons as adede-camp to the kng and gentle- sor Wsan observed the battlefeld and concluded that Lord Cornwalls' volaton of commonsense mltary prncples cost the man of the bedchamber. About Brtsh a fghtng force of over [twenty years after hs only mlseven thousand men, and perhaps!_^_., r the war. Cornwalls pulled hs forces back nto the - "bottle" area of the feld, where '; '. he was easly beseged. Professor j Wsan thought that ths plan was unwse, that Cornwalls should j have kept hs lne across the "bottle neck," a move whch would have, n hs opnon, prevented a successful sege. Lemestre, Naclero, and Wostl does the buhc of the scorng, the forward lne of a soccer team beng he offensve unt, but any team s only as good as ts defense. For an example one has only to look at the record of the 947 New York Gants ' baseball team. The Gants set a sngle-season home run record of 22 that year but ther ptchng and defensve play was horrble and the club fnshed n fourth place. For the frst three games of the current campagn the Beaver defense had a nasty habt of allowng the posston one solo breakaway per game. n the next two encounters wth Hunter and Queens ths fault had apparently been curbed, and the booters now present an extremely potent defensve unt. Although Army's Coach Joe Palone has lost sx starters from the 953 outft that compled an 8-- mark and was beaten only by Temple Unversty, last year's -natonal champons, Coach.Palone has good reason for optmsm n vew of the acquston 6f three fne yearlng prospects up from the Plebe squad. These nclude Charles Henze, Wally Summers, and Boto Allen. Army ranked second natonally n 953. Gedamke Back The Beavers" wll have the.servces of left halfback Rud Gedamke, who sat out lasfc Sat-.urday's rout of NY Martme due to llness. Perre Mayer, who played n Gedamke's poston ^aganst the Marners, wll be swtched back to rght fullback tomorrow. The rest of the Lavender lneup wll be Wally Mesen n goal, Vahe Jordan at left fullback, Edde Trunk at center halfback, and Robert Lemestre, Morrs Hocherman, Johnny Koutsantanou, Wolfgang Westl, and Gus Naclero on the forward lne.
