2018 BEARS TO SCHOOL PROGRAM Sharing history in Australian Primary Schools in the final year of the Centenary of Anzac Proudly supported by NATIONAL SERVICEMEN S ASSOCIATION NAVY - ARMY - AIRFORCE

2 Bears to School is an exciting community-driven program to get these beautiful bears into every primary school. Each bear is a perfectly-detailed collector s item and will help children relate to lessons and activities associated with the final year of the Centenary of Anzac. This not-for-profit program aims to see these special bears in every primary school in Australia and Bears to School is launching a whole-of-community effort to see this happen. There are ten bear characters available for donation to schools. Each donated bear comes with its own story card. This card details the service or campaign the bear s uniform represents in a way that will delight students and teachers alike. Each stands approximately 40cm tall. COMMUNITY BENEFITS Bears to School is a not-for-profit initiative supported by the Returned & Services League of Australia, the National Servicemen s Association, and Soldier On. Proceeds are used to support these and other military and veterans charities. SCHOOL BENEFITS Mascots Story Characters Home Visits Student Comfort Trophies Great War bears are delightful and engaging, and provide opportunities to support education, activities and commemorations. Each bear comes complete with an information booklet and a carry bag, which makes them perfect for a school s home visit program. Additional age-appropriate education support tools, such as audio of bear stories and simple activities, are available online at There is much in war we cannot and should not share with our young, but there is more that we can and must share. Ours is a proud history of service and it is their understanding of our military heritage that will carry forward the best of who we are and can be. Keith Payne VC AM National Ambassador Bears to School Keith Payne is Australia s oldest living recipient of the Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth s highest military award for valour in the face of the enemy.

3 BEARS TO SCHOOL HOW TO GET INVOLVED Here is how your school can become involved with the Bears to School program. 1. A beautiful donation from your community Bears can be purchased by any member of your community or the public and donated directly to your school from Your supporters simply select your school and bear/s and it s done! Their donation is permanently recognised on the Bear Story Card which tells the story of the bear they have chosen. 2. As a fundraiser When you register your school, you will receive a code (or unlock key ) which you can provide to your supporters. Each time a bear is purchased using this code, 15% of the proceeds will go to your school. Your school may use the funds raised for your own projects or you may choose to nominate a veteran or military charity to receive your funds. A range of resources to help you reach out to your community can be downloaded from Already, hundreds of bears have been donated by members of the community to their local schools. Register your school on AnzacBears.com.au/registration-page 3. Purchasing bears directly P&C and P&F committees work hard to raise funds and are often looking for projects that will have a positive impact for their communities. Purchasing a collection of these bears for your library or home visit program is a lasting investment that will provides years of enjoyment. Go to AnzacBears.com.au to select your school and bears. A Bears to School Message from Mandy Weidmann In my everyday work, I see school parent committees working tirelessly to make a difference. We all want to build stronger communities and improve the school experience for our children! This program ticks these boxes in a unique and meaningful way. These bears are gorgeous. I fell in love with mine as soon as I saw him and my kids love him too. The detail is incredible and everyone who visits is drawn to him. As home visit class bears, they are gorgeous guests in the homes of your families and provide special opportunities to connect over the Anzac story. I had a beautiful conversation with my kids about the sacrifice of my nan s Uncle Percy who was lost on the Western Front. I am deeply honoured to be a Ambassador for the Bears to School program and encourage every school to get involved. Mandy Weidmann Ambassador Bears to School Mandy Weidmann is Australia s Fundraising Whisperer and, because of her passion for saving volunteers from having to reinvent the wheel, has become the leading voice for parent volunteers in Australia.

MEET YOUR BEARS 4 ABLE SEAMAN MILLER - THE GREAT WAR NAVY BEAR Able (Bodied) Seaman Andy Miller shares the story of the Royal Australian Navy during the Great War The only Great War navy bear, he wears the Number 1 Dress Blue Serge Uniform with blue seaman s jumper and blue Class II cap with H.M.A.S. Australia (I) cap tally. Australia was our navy s Flagship during the war. LIEUTENANT ALBERT MURRAY - THE WESTERN FRONT BEAR Lieutenant Albert Murray was the first ever Australia in the Great War officer bear. He is kitted out in boots and proudly wears his officer pips. In preparation for the shelling and gas that confronted diggers on the Western front he wears his Brodie helmet and PH anti-gas mask carry bag. CORPORAL COHEN - THE LONE PINE BEAR Corporal Cohen Lone Pine Bear wears the standard dismounted troops uniform and webbing but with his trousers cut to shorts for the Gallipoli summer. His white armbands and back patch were worn to help diggers identify friendly soldiers in the heat of the battle in the dark trenches at Lone Pine.

5 SISTER BERNADETTE - THE NURSE BEAR Sister Bernadette O Meara remembers the care given to wounded diggers and the medical chain that would carry them from the front line to the aid posts, clearing stations and, when needed, to hospitals. Her uniform represents the working dress of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) and her rank of Sister is shown by the stars or pips worn on her epaulettes. PRIVATE HARVEY - THE GALLIPOLI BEAR Private Ernest Harvey, in his boots and slouch hat, wears the standard A.I.F. webbing, complete with water canteen, bayonet and helve (the handle for his entrenching tool). While some men landed at Gallipoli wearing the service cap as per orders, many opted to wear the slouch hat instead. CAPTAIN JOHN MURRAY - THE WOUNDED BEAR Captain John Murray shares the story of ordinary diggers who were promoted through the ranks to replace officers lost in battle. He is the first bear to wear the officers uniform, comprising the standard officers tunic, shirt and tie, and trousers. The three pips on his epaulettes denote his rank and he would wear only the standard British Service Cap when not in battle. TROOPER JONES - THE LIGHT HORSE BEAR Trooper Jones, also known as Jonesy, proudly wears the unique uniform of the Australian Light Horse, including an actual emu plume affixed to his slouch hat. The first ALH regiments were formed in August of 1914 and by war s end some 32,000 men had served in fifteen ALH regiments raised for overseas service.

6 LIEUTENANT THOMAS HENDY THE AUSTRALIAN FLYING CORPS BEAR Lieutenant Thomas Hendy, in his full-length Maternity Pattern flying jacket and flight helmet, celebrates the early days of Australian military aviation, when Australia was the only dominion of the British Empire to establish its own flying corps for service in the Great War. PRIVATE THOMAS - GALIPOLLI STRETCHER-BEARER BEAR Private Clarence Thomas, brings home the story of the unsung heroes of war the men who risked life and limb to save others on the battlefield. Like the famous Simpson, he wears his Field Dressing Haversack. Stretcher bearers didn t wear the standard webbing; rather they had only a leather belt and their haversack. They did not carry firearms. SERGEANT GREY WILSON THE GREAT COAT BEAR Sergeant Grey Wilson wears one of the most iconic and versatile uniform items of the Great War - the A.I.F. Greatcoat. The heavy woollen khaki coat weighed about 6.5 pounds (3kgs) and served as an outer jacket, additional blanket and often as a shelter. Grey also has his Brodie helmet and anti-gas mask carry bag at the ready.

7 Jonesy Light Horse Bear First thing you should know is not every trooper in the Light Horse wears an emu feather in his hat. Every state in Australia has its own Light Horse story and traditions and the emu feather is part my story. In the Great War of there are 15 Light Horse regiments. Each regiment has around 25 officers, 400 troopers like me and horses for all. That s a lot of horses. When we first sailed from Australia in 1914 we thought we were going to France but we ended up in Egypt and then at Gallipoli. We even had to leave our horses in Egypt when we went to Gallipoli. After Gallipoli most of the Australian Imperial Force (our Army) did go off to France but nearly all of us stayed to defend Egypt riding our tough old Walers across the beautiful deserts. From what I hear I reckon we re better off here than in those muddy trenches on the Western Front. I m part of Queensland s 5th Light Horse Regiment which is why I wear the blue and red colour patch on my sleeve and my emu feather. We were the first to pluck the emu s bum and most other regiments reckoned it looked so good they copied us. That s OK. Each regiment does have its own colour patch though. This tells you where they re from. One thing we all have in common is our favourite breed of horse. We love the Australian Waler. This is a tough horse bred in New South Wales especially for stockmen working in the harsh outback. Although we ride horses we don t usually charge into battle like a cavalry. We re called mounted infantry, which means we just ride our horses to get to where we need to go and then get off and fight on foot like other diggers. When we go into battle we ride in groups of four one bloke has the job of taking our horses somewhere safe while the rest of us go off to fight. One of the few times the Light Horse did charge into battle was at a place called Beersheba in The lads from the 12th and the 4th regiments galloped across the open desert and jumped over the trenches of Turkish soldiers and won the battle. It was pretty impressive. The Light Horse served mainly with the Mediterranean and Egyptian Expeditionary Forces in Sinai, Palestine and Syria. Most troopers would have loved to take their mounts home after the war but even back then Australia had strict quarantine rules so most horses ended up serving with other Imperial forces or on farms. For 100 years we have kept our promise to remember those who served.
