3 From the Left Seat: Well it seems that winter is still trying to hold on. The last few weekends at the field has been chilly for San Diego standards and the marine layer seems to be breaking up later and later in the day. Never fear though, May is here and hopefully May gray won t come true and we will have that typical San Diego sun that we are usually spoiled with. I guess we can just call this time our "build season". The field condition is starting to look great. I want to thank all the members for their efforts during the field maintenance days and a big thanks to Sandy who has been heading the clean-up efforts. The field is really looking great. Also the tribute tables are also looking outstanding. I have heard many comments on what a great idea it was to pay tribute to all the military branches and how great the tables look. Now I just need to get away from work and stop slacking on the Navy table. I hope to have this done before the next club meeting. I have posted a copy of the club by-laws on the club website under the club information menu. I encourage all members to re-familiarize themselves with these by-laws as these are what govern how our club operates. As the club president I want to stress that the Board of Directors operate "BY THE BOOK". All our decisions will be in line with the by-laws especially those involving membership and membership renewals. If we are ever questioned by the base or other authorities, we need to protect ourselves and ensure we are operating within our own governing by-laws. I will speak more about this at the May club meeting. If you have questions or concerns with the by-laws I encourage you to attend. Also as a member of the club it s your right to propose change to the by-laws and allow the membership to vote on the change. If you think we need to make updates to the by-laws come to the meeting prepared to make your proposal. As always keep safety in mind while operating your model. Every member of the club is a safety officer. If you see something unsafe, address to the pilot in a respectful manner. It's not just the duty of a club officer to address safety concerns. I look forward to seeing you all at the field. Darren From the Right Seat: Spring is finally here and hopefully the rain is done for the year. Unfortunately we trade that rain for early morning overcast skies and fog for the next couple of months. Time to bring out those small slow planes and get the park fliers back out so you can ensure some stick time despite the low ceilings and short visibility. As always, make sure you don t fly if the conditions are not safe. The level of activity at the field has been growing steadily as the weather improves. This results in many more people at the field using our newly decorated tables but also in an increase in the number of planes on the ground and in the air. Be courteous when it comes to the use of the assembly tables, starting tables, and the limited parking space in the pit area. If there seems to be a bit of crowding among the planes in the pit area, consider parking your planes outside the pits along the fence. Also, be aware of the number of planes in the air and the types of flying being done so we do an effective job of sharing the air space and runway. Remember, it s always a good idea to have a spotter, especially when the sky is crowded. It has been exciting to see the transformation of our olive drab tables into an array of service specific tables. I m amazed at the diversity of paint schemes and ideas which reflect the diversity of our membership. This diversity is one of the core strengths of our club and we should continue to nurture it and leverage it to make our club the best it can be and welcoming to new and prospective members. I have had the pleasure of introducing several of our newest military members to the field and Sandy has offered several of them stick time on the club trainers. What a great experience for our interested military

4 visitors to be warmly greeted and given a test fly at our field. With this kind of hospitality I m sure our membership will continue to grow. Our event schedule is about to spring into full speed. We still have the NEX show to do, though it was delayed due to construction. The Cub Fly-in, Rotors over Miramar, and the AMA pattern contest are coming up in the following months. Open Cockpit days will be here soon which means plenty of opportunity to share our interests and models with the museum crowd, do some flight demonstrations with our Micro Cubs and T-28s, and simply enjoy the donuts that many of us participants always seem to bring. If you haven t made it to a club event in the past year, try to make a couple this year. If you have been participating, keep up the good work and continue to be an ambassador for the Miramar RC Flyers and model aviation. Pledge Of Allegiance Guests/Introductions: New Members: Brian and Mark Buckner Prospective members: Brian Young, active duty Navy.

5 Treasurer: The Treasures report was given and approved. Secretary: The Secretary s report was given and approved. Field Marshal: The tables are coming along. The field is looking good. Keep looking out for ticks when you go out in to the bushes. Maintenance days are the fourth sat of the month. Deet bug repellant is good have on you. Safety: We re all safety officers. If something is going on, say something as it happens! Do not arm electric speed controls in the pits, arm them in the starting areas. Turbine flyers need to start checking the web for red flag days as the temperatures start rising. Old Business: Tables are looking good. There are still tables at the east end of the runway. Runway: We will be getting a quote next week for sealing the runway. We will be looking back on old quotes for smoothing the dips in the runway. Runway smoothing options were discussed. We have enough money to seal but not enough to repave. Slurry is the main option. We need to find a way to smooth it. Look for options and discussion at the next meeting. The next event will be May 5 th at the NEX at Naval Station San Diego 32 nd street tentatively. Look for confirmation/changes via . There will have to be creative carpooling to get civilians on the base as they do not allow vehicles without stickers. This will be a good event to reach a new market of Military Members. This has been postponed. The Cub Fly in has been sanctioned for Saturday June 9 th. Lunch will be included for $10. Rotors over Miramar will be July Kevin is working on the artwork for the T-shirts, more to come.

6 Darren would like to do a giant scale 3D event similar to Huckfest. This event was supposed to be at Palomar last year but never happened. The organizer approached Darren about bringing the event to Miramar. Miramar would monitor the event, they would execute. We are waiting for their pitch on the idea, the club will vote on it. Special AMA rules will apply and need to be researched/followed strictly. Pattern Contest Aug 11-12, minimal impact to the club. They are self-sufficient, check out the pattern event and participate. New Business: The charging station has been down due to a bad battery. It will not hold a charge and has been there at least two years. The charging station has served us well. We are contemplating adding two deep cycle marine batteries. This will help with the rising demand on our system. A motion was made to purchase two new batteries for the charging station. Darren has been tasked with taking over two detachments on the USS Essex and will be leaving June 18 and returning August 15. We have had no joy from the base with fire extinguishers. The club will most likely have to buy new ones. More to come next meeting. Show and Tell: Sandi-Goldberg Anniversary Cub, build took about a week. Yellow and blue Mertyl Rose Tribute colors.
