5 Orange Park High School Cheerleading Constitution MAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY In order to remain eligible to cheer at OPHS, all cheerleaders must meet the following requirements: Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0; this is set by the FHSAA. Grades are monitored periodically A cheerleader may be put on academic probation if grades fall below a 2.0. For competitive cheering, a cheerleader will not be allowed to be on the squad without a 2.0 at all times. The conditions of Academic Probation are as follows: No participation in practice, games, or performances No appearance as a cheerleader at any officially sanctioned event. If a member of a squad is removed from a position, a replacement may be considered by the coach, Athletic Director, and Principal. ***Exception for summer practices as noted above in Tryout Eligibility*** No excessive absences or tardies. See attendance requirements below No excessive referrals or negative teacher reports No outstanding balance of money owed to OPHS Cheer If a cheerleader is dismissed or resigns, they are expected to do the following at the time of resignation/dismissal: squad uniforms and any other school property must be returned to the coach. Extenuating reasons for resignation will be taken into account. This is a decision that will be made by the coach. Physicals and athletic paperwork required by FHSAA must be up to date at all times in order to participate in any practice, game, competition, or any other event. SAFETY While safety is our number one goal, please understand that you should expect bumps, bruises, and other occasional minor injuries. This is all part of cheerleading and is to be expected with any contact-heavy activity. No jewelry (including body piercings) is to be worn at any practice, game, or competition. This is a safety issue and is also a National Cheer Federation and FHSAA rule. See Attire for further details Nails must be trimmed short, and no acrylic nails or tips can be worn. For their own safety, no cheerleader is allowed to go anywhere alone when he/she is at a game. They must go in groups of three or more. Part of a coach s job is to know where you are at all times during practices, games, and special events. Consequences will be issued for failure to follow the coach s direction or to stay in assigned areas during events. PRACTICE ATTIRE Practice clothes must be appropriate and in good taste. The coach will make that decision. Sports bras must be worn underneath practice clothes. No spandex shorts, spaghetti straps, crop, or midriff tops are allowed. Teams will wear matching clothes on practice days. This is to ensure that appropriate dress is worn during practice and to assist with visual cleanliness while practicing motions, dances, and cheers. Damaged or lost practice attire will be replaced by the cheerleader at their own expense. Practice shirts are not to be altered in any way. No jewelry (this includes body piercings) is to be worn at any practice, game, or competition. This is a safety issue and is also a National Cheer Federation and FHSAA rule. Cheerleaders must keep hair in a ponytail, braids, etc. Hair must also be out of face when cheering. Poms and megaphones are considered practice attire and must be brought to all practices. 5 of 11
6 UNIFORMS Game Day attire to school will be decided upon by the coaches and/or captains. If you do not wear the appropriate game day attire to school, you will be required to sit out for the game. Uniforms are issued by the school and are property of the OPHS Athletic Department. If for at any reason a cheerleader quits or is dismissed, he/she is expected to return all uniforms/equipment within five days of the termination. Washing instructions will be provided when uniforms are distributed. At the end of basketball season, uniforms are expected to be returned clean, folded, and in a large trash bag with the cheerleader s name on the bag. Uniform tops are not to be placed in the clothes dryer and must be line-dried only. All altered uniforms must be restored to their original size before being turned in at the end of the cheering season. Damaged or lost uniforms will be replaced by the cheerleader at their own expense. No jewelry (this includes body piercings) is to be worn at any practice, game, or competition. This is a safety issue and is also a National Cheer Federation and FHSAA rule. Cheerleaders must keep hair in a ponytail, braids, etc. Hair must also be out of face when cheering. Poms and Megaphones must be brought to all practices, games, and/or competitions. BEHAVIOR AND PROFESSIONALISM Cheerleaders will be a positive representative of OPHS at all times. A cheerleader will promote good sportsmanship at all times. Violation of this rule may result in dismissal from the squad. Behavior in or out of uniform including behavior at games or competitions is also subject to this rule. No cheerleader will, in any way, insult or offend another team or squad. The coach will make the decision if this occurs. This includes posting inappropriate pictures, videos, or comments on social media. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Use your good judgement when utilizing social media. Violation of the following may result in dismissal from the squad (provided there is evidentiary support): o Use of drugs not under the supervision of a doctor. o Suspension with recommendation for expulsion from school, unless meeting with principal changes this. o Improper conduct in or out of uniform as determined by the coach, athletic director, or principal. o Drinking o Smoking Any cheerleader who uses any form of communication to libel another squad member may be removed from the squad. This will include but is not limited to facebook, twitter, snapchat, instagram, , texting, etc. Proof of this communication must be made, but once it occurs, the coach and an administrator will determine the abuse of each case and its subsequent consequence. Social media is monitored on a regular basis. o Any consequence given as a result of this infraction will be upheld by the school athletic director and administration. Absolutely no PDA while wearing any OPHS cheerleading uniforms or attire. This rule applies during all practices, games, and/or competitions and while cheerleaders are in the community. PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETICS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES During the cheerleading season (from June - February), cheerleaders may only participate in other sports teams or activities with the prior approval of both coaches/sponsors for each activity. Cheerleading may overlap another sport as long as obligations and responsibilities to cheerleading are met first. Males participating in football or basketball may join the competitive cheerleading squad without prior participation in fall sideline cheer so long as the coaches from both teams and school athletics/administration agree to said athlete s participation on a case-by-case basis and the athlete is in good academic and athletic standing with the school. FUNDRAISING Ample opportunities for fundraising will be provided throughout the year. However, fundraising may not necessarily offset all of the costs for participating in cheerleading. The cheerleader is expected to meet all of their financial obligations to the cheer program and must pay the balance owed to the program when it is due. Every cheerleader will be expected to support all fundraising events which support the team. Failure to attend fundraising events without prior approval will be considered an unexcused absence. Failure to participate and meet your quota of fundraising can result in dismissal from the squad. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS 6 of 11
7 ABSENCES CAN BE THE DOWNFALL OF A GREAT CHEERLEADING SQUAD! If one or more squad members are absent from a practice, game, or competition, stunts can not go up and the other members are forced to make last minute changes. This can be both stressful and dangerous to other squad members. Two or more unexcused absences from practices and/or games may be considered grounds for dismissal from the team. The coach may assign alternative consequences such as community service, essays, or Saturday School for failure to attend practices, games, or competitions. Cheerleaders will be required to sign-in and sign-out for every practice, game, and/or competition. Cheerleaders are not to leave unless they have signed-out with their coach. A clipboard will be provided with the sign-in/sign-out sheet for practices, games, and/or competitions. PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS: Regulated sideline practices during football season will be 3 to 4 times per week maximum during the season. Basketball will be two times per week maximum. Pre-season practices are practices following tryouts and preceding a designated sport. These may be called by the coach or captain for the purpose of preparing for summer camp, pep rallies, homecoming, etc. These practices will be approved by the coach and cheerleaders will be given ample warning. All cheerleaders must attend summer practices and camp, this is mandatory. Failure to meet these two requirements will result in dismissal from the squad unless prior approval of the coach is given. Work, appointments, and/or other activities are not an excuse. See below for family vacation policy. During the cheerleading season, no other activity is allowed to replace practice. If a cheerleader wishes to participate in another activity he or she must first come to cheer practice and if time allows, may leave practice early to attend other events. You will be expected to be at all practices. Jobs, club activities, extracurricular activities, doctor s appointments, etc. must not interfere with cheerleading and should be scheduled around practices and games. A squad member must be present at the last practice prior to a game or performance, if you are absent for the last practice before a game or performance, you will sit out for the game or performance. Squads will have practices each week. A tentative schedule will be given out at the beginning of each month. All practices are mandatory, and other schedules should revolve around cheerleading practices. Additional practices may be added on an as-needed basis. GAME AND/OR COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS: If you commit to cheerleading you are committing to attend every game and/or competition. Unexcused absences are those caused by anything other than illness or family emergencies. In addition, any unexcused absence will result in not being able to cheer for the game that week. You must be at the game but will sit in a chair or on the track on the sidelines of the field/court. Use of cell phones and sitting with friends, etc. will not be permitted. You will be expected to be at all games and/or competitions. Jobs, club activities, extracurricular activities, doctor s appointments, etc. must not interfere with cheerleading and should be scheduled around practices, games, and/or competitions. As stated in the Guidelines for OPHS Athletes, students must be present half the school day to be eligible for games scheduled for that day. Attendance will be checked on game days. Cheerleaders who are absent will still attend these games in full uniform, but will sit out on the sidelines. A squad member must be present at the last practice prior to a game or performance, if you are absent for the last practice before a game or performance, you will sit out for the game or performance. Cheerleaders will be required to arrive to games 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to start of game. If a cheerleader is to miss a game the coach must be notified one week in advance or this will be an unexcused absence for a game, unless due to an extenuating circumstance. The criteria for excusing the absence is at the coach s discretion. Cheerleaders must be at the bus for away games 30 minutes before the bus arrives. The coach will give them the arrival times in advance and post them on the website. Football games are typically held on Thursdays for JV and Fridays for Varsity. You will also be given a football schedule at the beginning of the season. Cheerleaders are expected to be present at all games, including playoff games for both football and basketball. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED... If a student is assigned to ISS because due to behavior concerns, the student may not participate in any scheduled event for that week example: if you have ISS on Monday, you will not cheer for the game that week. You will still attend game day 7 of 11
8 ready in full uniform. Athletes benched for ISS will be counseled and/or dismissed from the squad for OSS at the coach s discretion. Unexcused absences are those caused by anything other than illness or family emergencies. In addition, any unexcused absence will result in not being able to cheer for the game that week. You must be at the game but will sit in a chair on the sidelines of the field/court. Use of cell phones and sitting with friends, etc. will not be permitted. If you are going on a family vacation, you will be required to submit to the coach, in writing, the destination and duration of your vacation. The letter must verify you are on vacation with FAMILY and be signed by a parent. All other absences for vacation will not be considered excused. No exceptions will be made for summer cheer camp or competitions. If you are ill or have a family emergency, the coach must be notified by a parent or guardian via phone call (leave message if no answer), , or signed parent note in order for this absence to be excused. Text messages are not an acceptable means of excusing an absence by cheerleaders or parents. Please notify the coach before the absence is to occur. Only under extreme circumstances will prior notice not be expected, however a written letter or of explanation is required after the emergency situation has subsided.
