1 UHAA Contest: Supporting Hmong Youth for tomorrow 2016 Talent Competition Rules and Regulations 1. The vocal and dance contest is open to persons of all ages. Contestants must be a current student with a valid student ID. 2. No members of UHAA are permitted to participate. 3. Contestants must be amateur singers or entertainers, otherwise be persons who may be involved within the entertainment industry as singers or entertainers on a part-time basis, and do not belong to any professional organization (s) connected with the entertainment industry. Vocal contestants must not have any albums of any kind out in public. 4. Entries for the contest must be received by the due date and are subject to time availability of openings remaining. Anyone registering after due date may not have a chance to compete due to time slot availability. 5. A twenty-five dollar ($25.00) deposit is required to participate in the vocal performance and for the dance performance. If you want to perform in both categories, you must submit $25.00 per category. For instance, if you want to participate in the singing contest and the dance contest, you need to submit a total of $ To receive your deposit back, you must show up and perform as registered. If you fail to show up and perform, you will forfeit your deposit. This means that you will not get your deposit back. 6. UHAA reserves the right at any time to require proof of identity and/or eligibility. Failure to provide such proof within a reasonable time could result in disqualification from the competition. All personal details and information requested by UHAA by each contestant must be truthful, accurate and in no way misleading. UHAA reserves the discretion to investigate and disqualify any contestant, should the contestant at any stage of the event supply untruthful, inaccurate or misleading personal details and/or information or should the contestant be ineligible for the competition pursuant to these rules.
2 7. By submission of an application and entering into this contest, each contestant represents and warrants his or her compliance with these rules and regulations. No contestant will be permitted to audition or participate unless he or she has acknowledged and agreed to these rules and regulations. 8. By entering, each contestant agrees that UHAA and their successors have the right to use their names, likenesses, and images of all persons performing for future advertising, promotion and publicity in any manner and in any medium now known or hereafter devised in perpetuity. 9. Contestants may perform as a solo act, duets or group. 10. Contestants MAY NOT utilize live props, back-up singers, dancers or animals. Nonhuman props such as costumes and other accessories are permitted. Contestants may accompany themselves or have one accompaniment of a live musical instrument. 11. Contestants must supply their own background tracks on a single CD. For vocal contestants, background music must be clear of lead vocal singers, only musical band instruments are acceptable. 12. Contestants are not permitted to leave the stage or stage area during their performance. This includes singing or dancing within the audience. 13. The time limit for each contestant is no more than 10 minutes. No changing of CD s will be allowed. Songs going over 10 minutes will be shut off. 14. Contestants may sing the same song as another contestant or group. 15. Contestants may dance to the same songs as another contestant or group. 16. No changes in song choice may be made once the contestant has delivered the background CD to the sound person. CD s must be given to the sound person 1-2- minutes prior to their audition. For the sake of the other contestants and keeping the flow of the contest in order, please be available to perform one hour prior to your performance time. If not, you could forfeit your turn and possibly be disqualified. Also, when entering and exiting the stage, please be prompt. 17. Songs containing vulgar or explicit sexual lyrics will not be allowed. Contestants who during their performance, use any obscene, offensive, sexual or otherwise inappropriate behavior or gestures, including without limitation those referencing or depicting violence, nudity or explicit activity or which are not in the spirit of the contest or do not meet the UHAA standards for any reason, as determined by UHAA will be disqualified from the competition. 18. Contestants and/or their family or associates are not allowed to have contact with any contest judge before or during the competition. Please do not hang out in back of or around the judge s area. 19. Contestants and/or their family or associates who exhibit offensive behavior during any portion of the competition may result in the disqualification of the contestant from
3 further competition. Offensive behavior includes poor sportsmanship, bad manners and lack of decorum. 20. The order in which each contestant competes in the finals shall be determined by a random drawing. If chosen as one of the top finalist, you must submit a new song choice on a separate CD for the finals. Contestants therefore, must be prepared in case they are chosen as a finalist. Contestants may not repeat a song they have previously sung that night except in the event there is a TIE. The same rules and regulations that apply in the auditions will apply in the finals. 21. In the event there is a tie, the teams will compete for the award against each other. The vocal performers will each sing a song again. It is ONLY at this time that contestants may sing one of the same songs again or may repeat a song. This same rule applies to the dance performers. The same dance can be repeated from the night. Performers can perform a difference song or dance; it is up to the contestant. All the other same rules and regulations apply. One judge will be replaced with a new judge during the tie breaker round. Vocal Judging: PLEASE NOTE: *** One song must be a HMONG song *** Prepare: There will be three (3) elimination rounds. One song for each round. This means that the third song is the final song unless there is a tie. Contestants are to prepare four (4) songs in case there is a tie. The 4 th song will be the tie breaker. A 100-point system is used: 1. Originality/Creativity Have I seen this before? Is it original in content? 1-10 points 2. Vocal Range Is there wide range of vocals? Does the voice crack? Monotone? 1-15 points. 3. Vocal Quality Does the style of the song match the voice? 1-15 points 4. Subtext Is the singer connected mind, emotions and tell a story? 1-15 points. 5. Audience Response Positive response from audience? 1-10 points. 6. Stage Performance Make effective use of stage? Has visual appeal in addition to audience appeal? 1-15 points. 7. Overall Performance Could an average person perform this act? Did the singer remember the lyrics? Does singer have self-confidence? 1-20 points.
4 Dance Judging: No restrictions to song choice as long as the rules and regulations are abided by. Prepare: There will be three (3) elimination rounds. One dance performance each round. This means that the third dance is the final dance unless there is a tie. Contestants are to prepare four dances (4) in case there is a tie. The 4 th dance will be the tie breaker. An 80-point system is used: 1. Showmanship Expression of dance, image, crowd appeal, eye contact points 2. Style Execution Body control, body placement, sharpness, technique points 3. Precision Timing, sharpness, technique, visual appeal points 4. Style Specialties Leap for technique, turn form technique, variation, floor work points 5. Choreography Variety of moves, unique combinations, pace, tempo, use of music points 6. Routine Difficulty Complex moves, difficulty, rhythm, energy, pace points 7. Overall Execution Precision, timing, clean routine, visual effect points 8. Overall Routine Impression Entertaining, energy, pace, creativity, appropriate costumes, appropriate moves points All decisions and interpretation regarding the contest, its rules, and the selection of the winner remain with the judges, UHAA, its agents, and representatives and are final. The odds of winning will depend on the number of contestants and the quality of the contestant s performance. Prizes: 1. Grand prize winner will receive five hundred dollars ($500.00) 2. Second place winner will receive three hundred dollars ($300.00) 3. Third place winner will receive two hundred dollars ($100.00) 4. Winners must be present to receive award. Release Waiver: In consideration of my application being accepted, I legally bind myself, my heirs, and executors to waive, release and forever discharge any and all rights and claims for damages which I may have or hereafter accrue against any of the organizers, beneficiaries or sponsors of this event, its officers, agents, representatives and successors for any and all damages or injury to me or my equipment before or during, after or in any way related to UHAA, United Hmong American
5 Association. I attest that I/my child is physically capable of competing in the contest and that I realize my child and I are responsible for my/his/her safety. I acknowledge that I have voluntarily applied to have my child and/or myself to participate in the above described recreational activities. I understand the risks and dangers inherent with the activities in which I/my child will be participating and acknowledge that I am fully capable of participating in these activities. I understand and agree that any bodily injury, death, or loss of personal property and expense as a result of my negligence, or the negligence of UHAA or any of the associated sponsors, are my responsibility. I release from any legal liability and agree not to sue, file claim against the property of, or prosecute; and to indemnify and hold harmless any professional services/vendors participating jointly with UHAA and all its officers, agents, volunteers and employees for any and all liability, injury or death caused by or resulting from my voluntary participation in the activities mentioned above; whether or not such liability injury or death was caused by their negligence, or by my negligence, or any other cause. I authorize and consent to the publication of my child and/or myself, whether by television, newsprint, written advertisements, or otherwise, of any materials contained in my name or picture for participation in any event.
