1 Fashion Parade 1 Newspaper Sticky tape/masking tape Fashion suggestion cards Something to pull cards out of Time: 25 minutes Set up: Use a piece of paper and a pen to write down some fashion suggestion cards. Ideas include: Swim wear Wedding Evening gown Sports wear Pyjamas Casual wear Business wear Babies wear Race wear Fold each card in half (writing side in) and place in hat (or other item for girls to draw them out of). Determine how many groups you will have and divide girls. Each group should have a minimum of 3 people. Give each group a pile of newspaper and some tape. Instructions: Each group is to pull a fashion suggestion out of the hat. If 3 people in group pull out one fashion. If 5 or more people in group - pull out two fashions. Give the girls 15 minutes to use the newspaper and tape to dress a member of their team in a newspaper outfi t of the fashion selected. Call up one group at a time to model the outfi t/s and explain the outfi t/s they have created. Newspaper is to be recycled after use.

2 Draw a Picture Without Looking 2 Pen and paper for each girl Girls sit back to back in pairs. One girl draws a simple picture. She then needs to describe it to the girl sitting behind her. Explain to the girls the necessity for clear communication. The girls then swap over. Discuss how to provide clear verbal communication and descriptions.

3 Time: 15 minutes Duplo Game Set of 8-10 duplo blocks that have at least 2 of each type/colour of each block 3 Patrol is sat down in a line facing away from the fi rst girl. Split the blocks so that the fi rst and last girls have exactly the same Duplo blocks. The fi rst girl makes a shape with her blocks. She then needs to describe one piece at a time and the shape to the next girl in the line. She passes this onto the next girl, and so on, to the last girl. As the last girl receives instructions, she needs to build the same shape with her blocks as the fi rst girl. The need for clear communication will be highlighted. Swap girls around so everyone has a chance to be either the fi rst or last girl.

4 Skipping Chants Skipping rope/s 4 Teddy Bear As the girls swing the rope and sing the following rhyme, the girl in the middle does the actions as she jumps: Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around. Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground. Teddy bear, teddy bear, wiggle your nose. Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch your toes. Teddy bear, teddy bear, shake your head. Teddy bear, teddy bear, go to bed. Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn out the light. Teddy bear, teddy bear, say goodnight! Alphabet Skipping Two girls swing the rope and the other girls take turns to jump in and chant the alphabet, one letter on each jump. When they get to z they jump out. Alternatively, the girls spell out their names as they jump; say the days of the week or months of the year; count up to 20-forwards or backwards! 5 Human Knot Nil 5 Time: 10 minutes This is a teamwork game where the girls need to work together to reach a solution. The girls stand in a circle very close together and all put their hands in the middle Every girl then takes a hand of another in each of hers so that every one is holding two hands They must hold hands of two different people for this to work. The girls are then required to work together to untangle themselves into one large circle without letting go of anyone s hands

6 Find Out About Me 6 Tape measures Large pieces of paper or girl outline Coloured pencils, textas, magazines etc Girls can either trace around each other on large sheets of paper or use a template of a girl to list information about herself. e.g. height, age,hair colour, eye colour, length of hair, shoe size, school, mum and dad s names, brothers and sisters names, school, favourite sport, favourite band, favourite colour etc. Girls may wish to cut pictures out of magazines to stick on their picture to show things that they like. Put up the pictures around the hall or the girls can take them home

7 Me Book 7 Paper Magazines Pencils Textas Glue Girls use several sheets of paper stapled together to form a book. On the front, the Guide puts her name and a picture of herself or draws something. Inside, she includes information about herself including height, age,hair colour, eye colour, length of hair, shoe size, school, mum and dad s names, brothers and sisters names, school, favourite sport, favourite band, favourite colour, things she likes, things she is good at. She can include pictures from magazines or other sources, draw pictures and add detail as appropriate. This is a celebration of what makes each Guide special

10 What About Me? 9 Nil In small groups/patrols girls are to think about how individual they are, and how much they are like their friends. They can rate themselves in terms of the activities they do, the hairstyle they have, the clothes they wear, the hobbies they have, the music they like. 1 might be completely individual - 5 might be exactly the same as their friends. Girls are to think about whether there are things about themselves they would like to change and what they like best about themselves. Allow girls to discuss this without making judgments about each other. Is to easy being an individual? Is it easier to follow the group? When is being part of the group not always the best thing?

11 What Am I Good At? 10 Newspapers Pen and paper Have a look at some job ads from the newspaper, think about the types of things that they ask for in these ads. Decide what you are good at, what you might offer not only to a job but also to others. You good qualities might include: Have leadership skills Like spending time with friends Play the piano well Am a good listener etc Use these qualities to write an ad to sell yourself to others. e.g. I am an enthusiastic young woman who enjoys being part of a group and sharing time with friends. I have great leadership skills and am able to listen to others points of view and share my own. I have shown my commitment to a task through my dedication to learning the piano. etc Share your ad with others in the Unit.

12 Leading the Blind 11 Nil Time: 15 minutes To teach the girls the importance of giving clear directions, play the following game. Working in Patrols, each Patrol stands at one end of the hall except for one girl who is at the other end of the hall. This girl is blindfolded. Scatter obstacles i.e. chairs around the hall. The fi rst member of each Patrol needs to direct the blindfolded girl through the maze, using verbal directions only. e.g. move 6 steps forward, move 2 steps to your left, until the girl is safely back to the Patrol. Then the girl giving directions takes the blindfold and goes to the end of the hall to be directed by the next girl in line. Continue until all girls have had a go. Move the obstacles randomly so girls don t learn where they are.

13 Sandwich-Making Instructions 12 Sandwich making ingredients bread, spreads Butter knife To teach the girls the importance of giving clear directions do the following activity. Ask girls in pairs to write detailed instructions on how to make a peanut butter/jam/vegemite sandwich. Tell them that these instructions will be given to someone who has never made a sandwich before and should include all necessary detail. Give the instructions to another pair and ask them to follow exactly what is written and not to rely on what they know. e.g. instructions might say spread peanut butter without further detail. If you were following this, you could spread it very thinly or only on one bit of the bread. Instruction should read spread peanut butter across the entire side of bread in a thin layer. This is good fun and can lead to some very inedible sandwiches!
