September 2012 TEAM BEAR South Carolina s Premiere Wrestling Club 7X South Carolina Elementary School Champions TEAM BEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM 2005,2007,2008,2009,2010,2011,2012 South Carolina Elementary School Champions. Team Bear was established in 2003 by Bill Patterson, a former BHP high school wrestling champion. He set a goal to build a community based wrestling program that would serve the Honea Path and Belton areas of Anderson county. His vision of building champion qualities in the young wrestlers before they enter high school still holds true today. In just the first decade of its existence Team Bear as brought home the Elementary State title 7x with 6 of those champions coming one right after the other. The success of Team Bear as also giving a new attitude to BHP s high school program. This last season of BHP high school captured the AAA South Carolina State Title. Their first state title since Some might say Team Bear is the reason BHP Varsity South Carolina s AAA State Champions. [1]

TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH The Float The Float When riding in the top position one needs to be careful of not letting his arms come over their opponents shoulders. They want to ride with the hands and arms under the arm pits. Then move with their opponent across the mat, like floating on their opponents hips and back. Middle School and High School Team Bear wrestlers prepare for the Super 32 The Super 32 is the biggest preseason national wrestling tournament in the country. It is held in Greensboro, NC every October. The tournament allows for 400 middle school wrestlers and 1425 high school wrestlers to register for the event. This year registration opened up on September 15, and was closed the next day by noon. The Super 32 registrations hit the max in just 24 hours. Which is typical of this tournament every year. Team Bear Preparing for Success! BHP has four wrestlers attending the Super 32. In the middle school division is Trenton Patterson and Trevor Mansfield. In the High School Division is Dylan Gary and Brody Mansfield. We here at Team Bear wish these boys the best of luck. [2]

FUTURE CHAMPIONS Lil Bears Team Bears Pride and Joy! Lil Bears Team Bear consist of 4 divisions, the Lil Bears(4k-1st grade), The Elementary Team(2nd grade- 6th grade), Middle School(7-8 graders), and High School(9th-12th grade). But, its the lil Bears that make being apart of Team Bear so special. These little guys are as tough as they come. They work just as hard as the older members. They have a head start on others their age with maturity and the ability to accomplish difficult task. It is so exciting watching the Lil Bears go to the mat and show the skills they learned at the Team Bear Compound. Last year in the 6 year old and Under Division we had five state champions out of the 9 weight classes allowed in the division. This makes us at Team Bear feel all warm inside. Knowing that we are keeping the winning tradition alive across all the age groups Team Bear supports. [3]

How to become a Better wrestler? This is the question I get from many parents of youth wresters." How do I get my little Johnny or Susie to be a better wrestler?" First things first, You need to find a quality coach or youth team to establish a regular practice regimen. This is important, a youth wrestler should be at practice a minimum of 2 days a week(3 to 4 if you can swing it). A good practice does a few things besides conditioning. It gives the wrestler a base of moves that should be drilled every practice.this is so they can develop muscle memory. So when they hit the mat saturday mourning their not thinking about what move to hit. They are just reacting to their opponent through the core moves that they have established through muscle memory. Once you get your young wrestler in a good program things will improve. If you can't find a solid program there are lots of how to's on wrestling on youtube. Because your wrestler needs to establish a core move set, I would say 2 to 3 moves and on how to defend from each position Top,Bottom, Neutral! These moves need to be drilled at every practice. It's the coaches that think they have to show a whole other group of moves at each practice that have little success with their wrestlers on the mat. Now how to get to the next LEVEL!!!! MAT TIME, MAT TIME! You have to get out there and compete as much as possible. If your new to wrestling you are going to get beat. Heck, there are boys and girls that have been wrestling for years and still get beat. The key is to learn from your loses. You will rarely learn anything from a win except if feels really good. But From a loss you now know what you need to work on at practice the following week. So, Don't let a loss get you down. My oldest boy lost 55 matches in a row before he won his first match. The next year he was a state champion. So get out there! A good rule to follow if your serious about getting better is to go to at least 20 tournaments a year. Nothing helps a wrestler get better in wrestling more than to actually wrestle in live matches. If you go to 20 or more tournaments in a season, I promise the next year your wrestler will come back more confident and he or she will start beasting their opponents. One other thing, Find a good wrestling summer camp! These do wonders with youth wrestlers and developing solid technique! Good Luck to all young wrestlers on the mat! Now go get that MAT TIME! [5]

Gorilla Strength Training For the young dedicated wrestler! Training Tip #1 "The Block attack" Items Needed: a.) 30 Cement Blocks b.) 2 Wooden Pallets Here is what you do! Take the 2 Pallets and spread them out 50 yards inline with each other. Stack the blocks on the pallet in a neat fashion. Now you start at the pallet with blocks stack on it. Grab 2 blocks one in each hand and carry them down to next pallet and start stacking them the same they are stacked on the other pallet orderly. Once you have your Blocks successfully stacked. you turn and sprint back as fast as you can to grab2 more bricks Then repeat the process for 3 rotations. 1 rotation is down and back with you finishing up with the blocks stacked neatly stacked on the pallet you started from Click on me to get the latest wrestling Gear! Training Tip #2 "The Hammer" Items Needed: a.) a 8lb or 12lb hammer with a long handle(i like to tape the grip area) b.)a large stump or cut piece of log the size od a big stump, Now you take the hammer and swing it over the shoulder and hit the stump, like if you were chopping wood. Be careful of not coming directly straight over your head. your trying to build shoulder muscles here Now one rotation is hitting the stump 100 times from both sides of your body. Once again a minimum of 3 rotations is the entire workout. This the shoe My son uses. Click on it to find out this shoe much more cool wrestling gear! Training tip #3 "Huge Tractor Tire Roll" Items Needed: a.) Big Back Yard 50 yards is best! b.) a huge tractor tire When getting a tire make sure it's big enough where it's not to easy to lift end to end. Now, Lay the Tire flat on the ground. stand on one side facing the direction of the finish line. Now squat down using your knees not your back. Grab under the tire and lift all the wat up extending your body out just before flipping the tire back on to it's other side. You repeat this process down and back and that is 1 rotation. Once again a minimum of 3 rotations REAL STRONG! First things first! If you are apart of any type combat sport you should already know that you need to be in the best possible shape. [6]

If I'm a Wrestler, do I have to be a Marathon Runner? I have spent many years training and advising wrestlers and Mixed Martial artists on how to properly train! One of the biggest misconceptions is how far and how much running should be done. A lot of that comes from what we use to do. But as technology and our society evolve. So does our understanding of the human body and good training techniques. Just because thats what the old timers use to do doesn't make it right. Here is the problem with over Running! Ok, Running the Marathon to be a great wrestler! I don't think So! Here is the problem with to much running. Most of us go out and run directly on the blacktop or sidewalk(if your lucky you have a smooth grassy area to run) thinking, "Ok, today Im going to run 5 miles." and off you go. How long does it take to run 5 Miles? Well let's say you can haul butt at 7 minutes a mile. Well that will take you 35 minutes! How long is a HS wrestling match 6 minutes. Not to mention running so far on weekly training regimen is never good for the shins, Guarantee you will develop shin splints. As well something I learned while in the Army as Us Army Ranger, Where we ran every where. Your body will break down after a while. To much running was one of my main reasons for the arthritis and damaged feet I have today! So Please Stop running so hard to be wrestler. Even marathon runners build themselves up to long haul runs! This is How you should Cardio Train for any Combat Sport! First off, get out of your mind that over 30 minute workout crap, not important! As mentioned before as HS wrestling match is 6 minutes long! But it is not a 6 minute long marathon. It is a six minute sprint! think about it, the wrestlers that are the very best can go hard and fast for the whole 6 minutes. There is a better way to get the explosive speed needed and have all the wind you need to finish each match strong. Im going to cover 2 training techniques I use with my wrestlers that will give you explosive speed and all the cardio you need for a wrestling match! I promise if you change your workouts to this training method you will surprise everyone on the mat! Training Tip #1: "The Hill" Ok, first off you need to find a spot between 50 and 100 yards that has an incline. I like a good 45 degree incline. get someone to run a stop watch for you and have them stop you when you hit 8 minutes to 10 minutes no more is really needed(remember a HS wrestling match is only 6 minutes). You will start at the bottom of the hill. On the word go you will sprint to the top off the hill as fast as you possibly can, really pushing yourself. When reach the top and turn to come back, you bring it down to a jog. Now, when you get back to the bottom of the "Hill" You turn back up the hill sprinting as fast as you can. You repeat this process till you hit 8 or 10 minutes. DONE! Do this workout every other day,not everyday! Training Tip #2 "The Log Roll" Here is what you need! A log of wood that is at least 6 feet to 10 feet in length. The thickness should be equal to that of a telephone pole. Also a flat grassy area to mark of at least 25 yards or more. We all know the bear crawl! This basically that but better! You start with the log lying down on the ground with your hands ready to push and roll with your feet pushing off like the bear crawl(you might want to get some leather gloves). On the word go you will push the log along down and back for 2 minutes, stop rest 1 minute. Then repeat! Do this for a total of 4 times! These 2 workouts will help you develop that explosive quickness on the mat for the entire Match. Good Luck with Your Training! TEAM BEAR Belton -Honea Path, SC Pre-Season Practice going now until October 18, 2012 for all Middle School and High School wrestlers. [7]
