SCOTTISH RAMBLE Newsletter of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Queensland Branch Incorporated September 2017 Greetings Members CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE TO MEMBERS Writing this article for the Ramble has got me thinking again about the future of the Queensland Branch considering that this is our 40 th year of enjoying Branch status. As I recall the past 40 years, I think of the people that have been involved whether they be dancers, teachers, committee members or even our own families being in the background of our dancing lives. Names, too numerous to mention spring to mind, many of whom have now passed but who supported, encouraged and promoted the concept of a Branch in Queensland. Now that 2017 is fast coming to a close what lies ahead of us? What will the future bring us? Like most aspects of life, Scottish Country Dancing is a growing, moving, breathing, living entity. To continue as an evolving and expanding Branch, change is inevitable and we will need to adapt and be proactive in the future if our Branch is to survive. How do we do this? Has any one person got the answers? I doubt it very much, however as a team, every single one of us can make an impact. To my mind, fun and friendship is the key to survival and success. We do need to, however, keep in mind the objects of the Society and that is to preserve and further the practice of traditional Scottish country dances. I believe that we can learn and at the same time enjoy the dancing, and share a smile, and perhaps some laughter. Since taking on the role of Chairman I have attended socials where I have seen an abundance of smiles and happiness. It doesn t matter that perhaps a dance doesn t quite go as planned, what really matters is that dancers are made to feel welcome. Sometimes we just need that one extra person to enable us to form a set. It is then that we realise that we don t particularly mind what their dancing ability is, so long as it lets the rest of us dance. The past 40 years has gone so quickly to my way of thinking. Where shall the Queensland Branch be in another 40 years? It shall certainly be in the hands of people who are probably unknown to us now. For those new people coming into dancing how will they feel what will be their first impression and will they feel welcomed? Will they feel that they are part of something extraordinary or will they walk away feeling disheartened by an apparent less than welcoming attitude? It is up to everyone single one of us to keep our Branch alive so that it can prosper and survive for the next generation of dancers. Heather Heron Chairman Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another Dancing is moving to the music without stepping on anyone s toes, pretty much the same as life The Scottish Ramble September 2017 Page 1

NEWS FROM CLUBS News from the Gold Coast Our second annual Tea Dance was held on August 19 th and lots of fun and great dancing was enjoyed by all who attended. Those travelling to Burleigh had a slow and somewhat frustrating journey due to an accident on the Pacific Highway near Reedy Creek. Dancing commenced at the slightly earlier time of 1.30pm following the Grand Parade led by resident piper Ian Aitken. We were fortunate enough to have booked The Black Bear Duo for the afternoon. The last dance, The Deil Amang the Tailors was such a blast it was repeated once through again. We all loved it so much that it is now the last dance on The Summer Ball program. Anyone who received the program at the Tea Dance, please note that the last dance has changed. The set Iain and Emma play for this dance is on their latest CD Ursa Major which is highly recommended. Tiered cake plates and fine china enhanced the look of the excellent High Tea served at about 3.30pm. A dancing friend of Elspeth Lacey visiting from Scotland, was very impressed with the variety of food on offer. She told us because of Food Safety laws, club members there are no longer allowed to provide their own catering so a stock standard sandwich, sausage roll and cake is usually on offer from professional caterers. The attractive High Tea presentation along with a tartan stage front and the new stage backdrop certainly added to the occasion. We now look forward to The Summer Ball on Saturday 3 rd November. Pre-dinner drinks and nibbles are available from 6pm with the ball commencing at 7pm. The Summer Ball is a permanent replacement for the Day of Dance. Iain and Emma are booked to play again ensuring another night of enjoyable dancing. The program is listed elsewhere in the Ramble. A pre-payment option is included on the program. Now to convey some very sad news. Our friend and fellow dancer Peggy Simmons passed away suddenly in Moscow at the end of a three month world trip. Peggy was a member of the Gold Coast Club for 20 years and served on the committee as secretary for 14 of those years. Peggy s memorial was held on Monday 4 th September in Southport. Past and present dancers attended and met family members about whom we had heard so much. We were able to convey to them the significance of Peggy s contribution and how much we valued her friendship. Peggy is very much missed. 6 Robert Burns - Auld Lang Syne How many times have you sung Auld Lang Syne without thinking what the words mean? Here are the words Burns wrote together with a colloquial translation dated How do I know? I found them on a tea towel which we have been using at Graceville classes for years. It is only now that I have stopped to read and share them. Caption: Helen Draper and Cathy McLeod holding the tea towel, which is rather faded by now Auld Lang Syne Composed Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot And auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne, We ll tak a cup o kindness yet For auld lang syne. And surely ye ll be your pint stowp! And surely I ll be mine! A we ll tak a cup o kindness yet For auld lang syne. And twa hae run about the braes And pou d the gowans fine: But we ve wander d mony a weary fitt, Sin auld lang syne. We twa hae paidl d in the burn Frae morning sun til dine: But seas between us braid hae roar d Sin audl long syne. And there s a hand, my trusty fiere,! And gie s a hand o thine! And we ll tak a right gude-wille waught For auld lang syne. The Days of Yore Colloquial translation 1971 Should we forget our former friends By whom we set great store? Should we forget the friends we ve met And the brave days of yore? The days of yore, my dear The days of yore. We ll tilt the jug and drain the mug To the brave days of yore. I fancy you could sink a pint And I ll take rather more And we ll both get tight with all our might For the brave days of yore. We two have wandered on the hills And daisies pulled galore But we ve tired our feet on many a street Since the brave days of yore. We two have paddled in the brook From noon to half-past four But seas have lain betwixt us twain Since the brave days of yore. So let us grasp each other s hand: And, as I said before Our hearts we ll cheer with honest beer For the brave days of yore. Robert Burns. The Scottish Ramble September 2017 Page 6

Tartan Day Tartan Day is an annual event in Brisbane and this year was held on 15 th July, as usual in King George Square. With pipe bands and Highland Dancers too, as well as a group of Scottish Country Dancers, it was a well attended event. It was a beautiful, sunny day and enjoyed by all who attended. Two full sets 16 dancers came for the occasion and it was generally agreed that dancing was of a high standard, with good covering within and between sets. We danced Rothesay Rant, The Silver Grey and Scott Meikle, three very different dances with lots of action and good to watch. Mary Todd took a number of photos, including the one on this page. Several spectators asked for information about where to dance, so perhaps we have attracted some new dancers! After dancing, most dancers assembled for lunch at a nearby restaurant and enjoyed a well-earned rest and a chat. Bryan Hacker REDLANDS U3A SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCE CLASS It seems that it all happens at the Redlands U3A Scottish Country Dance class. The class had an additional visitor on Monday 31 st July in the shape of a blue tongue lizard. He appeared very unexpectedly behind the teacher, Heather Heron and was quite content in listening to the music and trying to make sense of the movement! After being delicately shepherded from the hall by Sam Heron, one person remarked that the lizard would have looked good dressed up in tartan! And of course, being the generous Scots that we are, didn t charge him for joining in with the class Scottish Country Dancing is never dull that s for sure! The Scottish Ramble September 2017 Page 7

Hello all (from Jenny and Bryan) Jenny and I have just enjoyed a morning of dance in the Town Hall, Axbridge, Somerset. The hall is part of the Town Square, as shown in the accompanying photos all very charming. It was a beginners class and we were very warmly accepted. Only one dance we knew well Cherry Bank Gardens but that was not a problem. Another was Salute to the Borders quite challenging for newer dancers! We arrived back in Somerset after a most enjoyable fortnight in Greece on Monday. Hope all is well in sunny Queensland. Happy Dancing! 10 Greeting Dancers and Teachers, A Queensland Teachers Support Group (QTSG) workshop is scheduled to be held on Monday 2nd October at Love Street, Spring Hill from 10 am 3 pm. The topic for the day will be working through Book 51. As dancers if you would like to participate in support of less-experienced teachers as they improve their skills, you will be most welcome to attend. And, of course, all teachers are very welcome. Remember to bring along a bite to eat for your lunch! Morning tea will be provided. All welcome! Reminiscing: Recently Heather and I drove past the Griffith University site on Smith Street on the Gold Coast and it brought back a wonderful memory of another time in the Scottish Country Dancing world. Several of us were part of a SCD display team performing at a Scottish Tattoo there. We were performing twice, once during the afternoon and then in the early evening. During the break Dr George and Ethel Williamson invited the dancers back to their home for an evening snack. Given that there were three sets of dancers Ethel and George had set up three long tables to seat and feed all of us. Ethel being the ultimate hostess had placed several jugs of milk on each table and explained which jugs contained ordinary milk, skimmed milk or low fat milk intending to cover all of our needs. Jokingly I asked Ethel what about people who don't have milk and Ethel shortly returned with three more jugs. Ethel placed one on each table and explained they were empty and were for the people who didn't have milk. On another occasion when we were discussing the Clan Mackenzie Ball when the question was asked about a 'Piper', Ethel asked would that be a Bagpiper or a 'Newspiper'. While Ethel and George were present one was guaranteed a relaxed atmosphere. On another occasion when I was very new to SC Dancing I was part of a display team at an evening after dinner event. An encore was demanded by the enthralled audience (my words not theirs) and so it was decided to dance "Trip to Bavaria". I gently let my fellow dancers know that I had never danced the dance. I was assured I would have in class. So the music was put on and away we went. My only instruction had been look for a hand. This I did with great intensity. On seeing more than the usual smiles from my fellow dancers I was gently informed that I had not danced it before but that I was going well. That is what I call confidence in each other. From then on being part of a set who knew what they were doing gave me confidence. Wonderful people, wonderful times, wonderful memories. Sam Heron The Scottish Ramble September 2017 Page 10

Francis Walduck s Books of Dances We all know Francis Walduck wrote some lovely dances. Sadly, his writing days are over. Many of his dances were published in The Dancing Brolga Collection, Vols 1, 2 and 3, From the Danube to the Liffey, The Auckland Suite and The Clan MacKenzie Collection. As noted in the June edition of Branch Update, copyright has successfully been transferred to the Branch and arrangements made for re-printing the booklets, with the goal of honouring Francis memory and making his dances available throughout the SCD world. With some guidance from the Sydney Branch Bookshop, we made contact with outlets in the UK, Canada and New Zealand. Response was immediate, with contacts often responding they had known Francis well and greatly enjoyed his dances. Almost unbelievably, within a few weeks we had sold close to 70 sets of the six books. It has also become apparent that Francis wrote quite a few dances which have not yet been published. We are planning to try out his unpublished dances with a view to publishing a further book in honour of a great dance deviser. The attached photo, by Jill Pope, shows Francis with Greg and Naree Paulsen and Lyn Edwards at the 40 th Australian Winter School, here in Brisbane in Francis devised The Ruby Rant for the 40 th Winter School. If you as a reader would like any of Francis books, don t hesitate to ask we can arrange for more to be printed if need be. So Francis memory will live on in his dances I am sure that is what he would have wished. Bryan Hacker THANK YOU To everyone who sent me condolences, kind words and hugs on the recent death of my Granddaughter, Sara Zelenak, I thank you all most sincerely. Sara died during the London Bridge UK terrorist attack on 3 rd June this year. Heather New The Scottish Ramble September 2017 Page 11

Hi all Qld Branch members, Recently some dancers from Brisbane and Toowoomba went to Warwick for the weekend to help with the Scots-PGC College annual ceilidh. We had our own mini-social on Sunday morning, and danced one of our newest favourites Broadway. We loved the tunes that Bruce Mitchell played so much, that we made him play it again so that we could get a video of it. The street in New York called Broadway cuts diagonally through all of the other streets in New York, hence the diagonal rights and lefts. Go onto YouTube and type in Broadway Scottish Country Dance, and it should come up. Thank you Jenny Morris for videoing it, and uploading it. Please watch and enjoy! Cheers Cathy McLeod Sympathies VALE News has been received that John Hutchinson, late of Sunnybank passed away peacefully on Saturday 16 th September John and his late wife Margaret were among the original Scottish Country dancers with Clan MacKenzie from the 1950 s through to the 1980 s. Many will remember John for being nimble on his feet and his wonderful ability to do the Pas De Basque Coupe with great flair and aplomb. John is survived by his two daughters, Donna & Annette.
