1 WATFORD AND WEST HERTS SCOTTISH SOCIETY President Morag Wilshire Treasurer Alison Middleton Secretary Stuart Kreloff Newsletter editor Adrian Davis Website Facebook page Watford and West Herts Scottish Society NEWSLETTER FOR SEPTEMBER 2016 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE This is my first message since I took over from Duncan as president at our AGM in June. Duncan has done a wonderful job over his years in office. I would like to thank him for his hard work and good humour. Duncan is our acknowledged catering expert and he and Zena have put in many hours organising, planning, buying, preparing and setting food out before donning their glad rags to act as President and President s lady welcoming folk at our events. Duncan has also made links with several other local community groups which is wonderful as I believe this is vital to an active and visible society. I am delighted that Duncan will be Vice President and that most of our wonderful, experienced committee are staying in office. I am exceedingly grateful to our committee (past and present) and members for their enthusiasm, knowledge, commitment and energy. I welcome Adrian our new newsletter editor and thank Rod for his dedicated service. For those of you who do not know me allow me to introduce myself. Born in England to a Scottish father, I learned Scottish country dancing (along with highland and majorettes) at the Balmoral school in Harrow as a child and my family regularly attended events at the Wembley and District Scottish Association where my mother was an active member. After many years not doing Scottish dancing other than at wedding ceilidhs I joined this society in 2004 and regularly attended classes until too pregnant to do so. There then followed a nine or so year gap while that child grew up before I again became an active member. I work full time as a nanny and was a Legal Executive in my previous career. My adult son is a keen ceilidh dancer (I am working on the enthusiasm of my adult daughter) and my youngest child has often helped and danced at society events but is too young to attend classes unless they fall in school holidays and too busy with other forms of dance to learn at weekends. My husband (who runs a model aircraft business in Kings Langley) doesn t dance but adores Scotland, collects whisky, will wear a kilt and will help when he can. I hope to attract new members and to see more of our existing members at social events. I hope to introduce some new ideas whilst continuing with tradition. I very much want to hear your views. Do please contact me by post, or text message with any ideas, grumbles, positive feedback, requests or concerns. Telephone can be tricky due to work, busy social life (I also dance salsa)

2 and children/husband giving me messages as and when they remember. Do please let me know of local community groups with which we could build ties. Do please let me, or other committee members know, if you can help out, even if it can t be regular. Obviously as a society we can t please everyone all of the time but I hope that we can please enough of you from time to time to keep the society active as we progress towards our centenary in I aim to continue our strong links with other societies and have danced at Wembley, Harrow, Berkhamsted, Silver Cross and Lucy Clark so far. I look forward to meeting as many of our members as possible and to welcoming many more. Do please actively support the society. Many thanks. Morag Wilshere THE FUTURE OF SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING You may already be aware that the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) is consulting widely about the future of the Society and ways to improve Scottish Country Dancing. Every single Branch in the world is being asked for views and suggestions. Members have also been contacted through the Society s Ezine. The Society would also like to hear from those who dance but are not currently members of the Society and this is your opportunity. A great deal of work is being done by many volunteers to come up with ways to encourage new dancers and improve our system of teaching and dancing. A proposed five year Business Plan with strategic aims has been put together. Jane Rose of the Berkhamsted Club is one of the seven members of the Working Party. If you can find a few minutes to complete the survey online, it may well help future generations to enjoy our wonderful activity. The survey can be found here: If you would like any more information, Jane would be happy to receive any enquiries by or phone. Her contact details are jsrose@ntlworld.com and DATES FOR YOUR DIARY (i) Dance schedule for Dancing classes recommence on 8 September with the Christmas dance on 15 December. Following the Christmas break, classes will be from 5 January to 6 April inclusive and 20 April to 22 June with the summer dance on 29 June The teaching rota is attached with the proposed themes and dances for the first six weeks set out. The dances for the Christmas dance and Caledonian Ball have, for the first time, been graded as to their difficulty of complexity. But most members should be able to do most dances with the appropriate amount of preparation! At our first evening, Judy Snook called the dances. We did Postcode, Honeymoon, Butterscotch and honey, Inchmickerie, Ship in Full Sail and the Sailor. 14 people attended. (ii) Wedding celebration ball Ken Martlew and Petula Allen were married on 3 rd September. They are holding a wedding celebration ball at Allum Hall on 28 th October. The dance programme is available at Dances will not be walked but will be briefly recapped. The band will be Strathallen. They do not want presents but if you plan to attend please bring a plate of finger food. Please let Ken and Petula know by 31 September if you will be attending. Their contact details are: kenmartlew@aol.com petulaallen@yahoo.co.uk

3 (home) or (Ken) or (Petula) (iii) New Year s walk This will be held on 8 th January, with details in the next newsletter (iv) Burns night supper The Burns night supper will be held on 27 th January 2017 at the Town and Country Club, Rosslyn Road, Watford WD18 0JX. The father of the President will recite the immortal memory. (v) Caledonian Ball The Ball will be held on 18 th March at the Allum Hall and Manor House, 2 Allum Lane, Borehamwood, WD6 3PJ. The dance programme is attached. There will be a rehearsal at the Nascot Wood recital hall on the afternoon of 12 th March. SCOTSCARE In the past the Society has made charitable contributions to the Royal Scots Corporation. It has now been rebranded as Scotscare but its overall objective remains as the charity for Scots in London. Any member interested in its activities should look on the website PROPOSED SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCE INSTRUCTION TO LOCAL GUIDES AND BROWNIES Earlier this year we were approached by the leaders of a North Watford Guides and Brownies group for some dance instruction for the girls. Discussions were very fruitful, and there are proposals, still to be confirmed, to invite some of them to one of our Thursday night classes and for some of our dancers to visit others on their own group night one Monday, all of this in November/December The aim would be to teach the girls a few simple dances that might help them towards appropriate badges. When we suggested that this could lead to a family ceilidh at which the Guides and Brownies could demonstrate their dances, the North Watford leaders were very enthusiastic. They could book the church hall they normally use, and would have little trouble organising attendance. They would undertake the organisation and the financing. We would provide recorded music and book a caller. Malcolm Ferris-Lay tells me he is free on several Fridays in January 2017, and there is every likelihood that it will all come together. More details as soon as all is confirmed. MEMBERSHIP NEWS Unfortunately there are two deaths to record. Pauline Kelly who died in March 2016 was a member since She was the widow of Ron Kelly who was President of the Club in Lilian Podbury died in early September. She was a well known dancer in the local area, particularly at Gerrards Cross and a senior dancer at the Lucy Clark Society. She was a regular participant at the Caledonian Ball. She features in the latest edition of the Reel, where she is interviewed about her memories of Lucy Clark. Catherine (Bette) Gray was a member since She was the widow of Bert Gray, who was the President She has moved to a residential home near Diss, Norfolk. (if any member would like to write to her, her address can be provided on request).

4 CONTRIBUTION TO WATFORD PEACE HOSPICE On Saturday 9th July, Barbara McNamara took part in the Watford Peace Hospice Care Charity Walk, accompanied by daughter Karen and granddaughter Genevieve (see the photo below). This has been an annual event since 2007, but this year, the 10th, is to be the last. They took part in memory of Barbara's niece, Sarah, who died of cancer in June On a fine, warm and clear evening, Barbara completed the 6 mile circuit whilst the other two completed 13 miles. Barbara is very grateful for the generous support of the West Herts Society for their donation of 200 to the Watford Peace Hospice.
