UHSAA Sportsmanship Practices Below is a list of actions and ideas practiced by schools during the school year. Please read through and think about which of these ideas your school could implement: At the beginning of the year the state slogan- "Do Rowdy Right" was printed on all our faculty and student body Rowdy Royal shirts (Over 400) - the sportsmanship message was presented to the full student body during our big Homecoming assembly and presenting the proper sportsmanship message at every team parent pre-season meeting was a great success! Sharing of facilities. This past year as well as this upcoming summer our facilities have been shared with ---- High, as their Football field was not yet completed as well Volleyball team will use our gyms in preparation for their season as their gym space is also under construction. A group of students were suspended from attending two games because of inappropriate sportsmanship after a basketball game. We then shortened the suspension to one game if they could pass a sportsmanship test that was based on our school mission statement which includes three C's; Critical Thinking, Communication, and Character. All students got the message that we were serious about good sportsmanship. The first day of school for our sophomores and the next day for all other students we rotated small groups into the gym and went over the "Raise the Bar" program. We encouraged the students to do rowdy right. The students responded by avoiding the cheers that we identified as being unacceptable. The students were very positive to the administrative suggestions to enable us to "Raise the Bar". Beyond our meetings outlining sportsmanship held with the entire student body, team members, and parents, we also hold a fan meeting at the beginning of each sports season where we honor students as being considered a super fan and thus a spirit leader at our school. At this meeting, we enlist their support in helping the crowd stayed focused on good sportsmanship. We started a student "booster club" called the "Heard" to cheer at games and model good sportsmanship we had an incident with boys basketball at Pine view high school. decisions were made in the heat of battle that were misinterpreted by each opposing teams. the principal and i drove to st. george and met with PV's administration to resolve conflict and together addressed the issue to the media supporting each others actions. This was a great example of things perceived by outside sources that were corrected and addressed by the two schools and then made known to the public to show a higher level of sportsmanship existed between the schools. bad situation made right. The year the SBO's made supporting the teams in a positive manner a focus and we had excellent crowds and better behavior. Sportsmanship is becoming more of a focus for our school. It is nice to see some of the efforts that our coaches have taken as a school. For example, Our swim team focused on welcoming the other schools and had the students give them the tour of the areas they will need to use, like the dressing rooms and lanes. They focused on wanting them to feel welcome. It was evident in our year end meetings that we have made stride on sportsmanship, but still have a ways to go. We have past biases that need to be overcome. Our highlight would be with the administrators focusing on and teaching the fans how to cheer properly in basketball. We have been working to spread that teaching to all the other sports. We organized and held our own sportsmanship summit, and thereby educated all teams and coaches about the goal of "raising the bar." The use of our training cart has been a big help in getting to know players and coaches of the opposite teams. It has been a great thing!
We wanted to improve the overall behavior of our activity programs in general. We have spent time working with the coaches on helping us express to the students that appropriate behavior is what we are about here at ---- High School. We wanted them to lead by example and I feel that has taken place this year we had zero coach ejections and zero student ejections. Our students understand that sportsmanship is an expectation at our school based n the philosophies we discuss in all meetings and classrooms. We do student meetings each week at the start of each season we talk about sportsmanship and what cheering for each sport may look like. Sportsmanship improved throughout the year. Particularly during basketball season we made efforts to work with our crowd regarding sportsmanship. After a rocky start we improved our crowd sportsmanship every game up until the state championship game. In the end our crowd was respectful and positive. The behavior of ---- students at home basketball games was a point of emphasis. By season s end, all use of negative language was eliminated and replaced by "we cheer for our team, not against our opponents." As part of the "We Will" sportsmanship videos that we played before each home basketball game and wrestling match, we included video/pictures from the opposing team. This helped our fans and student body realize that we are far more alike than different from our opponent. Region IV held a sportsmanship summit at Jordan High last August. Student body officers met and discussed ways to improve sportsmanship. Different ideas were discussed and brought back and shared with our students. One of the strategies that really stood out was having our SB officers sit on the front row for football and basketball games to be an example to the rest of the student body. With the support of our administration it was a practice that really worked for us. What we did this year was the principal bought some red, white and black tie died shirts that the administration would give to the kids at half time of the games that were really demonstrating "Rowdy Right" and cheering for their team and not against the other team. We also had one or two of the administration always standing by our dog pound to make sure that negative things were not being said to the opposing team or officials. The students seemed to really want to earn one of those T shirts. One of the best displays of sportsmanship was noticed in the girls sports both in volleyball and basketball. When it was one school s senior night they also had something for the opposing team s seniors. I know that when we went to Judge for a girls basketball game it was their senior night and it really set the tone of sportsmanship when they gave our seniors a flower and a hug. When our rivals, Morgan came to our senior night one of our seniors gave one of their seniors a gift and a hug. Not only was the respect and sportsmanship noticed on the floor but also in the stands. I can' tell you the number of parents on both sides that noticed and responded with great sportsmanship during the game and after. What we believe worked best for us this year in getting our student body and community to buy into doing 'rowdy right' for basketball season was to present T-shirts to those in the crowd that showed good sportsmanship. In the past we have had problems with our fans during basketball games due to the small size of our gym. Fans sit almost right under the basket and have been known to taunt opponents during games. By having these true fan T-shirts available, and only giving them to fans who demonstrated true sportsmanship, it became very apparent that all of our fans wanted to wear a shirt that said they were a true fan. This made a huge difference in the mentality of our fans and players as well. We believe it helped connect fans to players, players to the school and each other and it is one reason why Grand County had the most successful spring sports season ever. We finally began to pull together in the same direction as a team, school, and community this spring season. We kicked off the school year with a "We Will" video shot by our students. It featured students, coaches, teachers, and administrators. I think it helped make good sportsmanship the cool thing to do. The Peer Leadership class provided weekly themes that helped our students get ready for big games and also emphasized good sportsmanship and were very positive with our student body and community. The Dream Team was made up of student athletes who would then travel to elementary schools and help with various activities.
We discussed playing the DVD to players and parents alike about the bullying as well as discussions at each beginning of the season Athlete's/Parent's Meetings and the discussion about sportsmanship and the overall goals of our school to "Build Champions", not necessarily win championships. Meet with parents and athletes before the season to set sportsmanship expectations. Reinforcing the "Do Rowdy Right" theme at each home contest via p.a. announcements and discussions with Student Council members and team captains who were then responsible for helping maintain a positive atmosphere of cheering (we have no cheerleaders) was a big accomplishment for us. An area of success for our school was the video we made outlining the expectations of our crowd during games. This video was posted on our website and sent to every parent to get them involved in the program as well. We feel the video let the students and parents know what was accepted in the past would not be this year. We used many students for the video, and we feel the video created relationships with the students who were the ring leaders. We were able to work with them on what they could and could not do. We feel the video helped students see examples of good behavior and they appreciated that we still wanted them to be loud and crazy, but appropriate and positive at the same time. Being a new team, our girls basketball team struggled mightily. They were openly ridiculed by some of the teams we played, yet by instilling in them the sportsmanship goals laid out in Raise the Bar and by using those goals to help them understand their role in such a situation, they were able to have a profound effect on many opposing players by always displaying a smile, always working hard, always helping the other players up from the floor, etc. They were able to see that doing the right thing in response to someone doing the wrong thing can change people's perceptions and actions. Our Student Body Officers (SBO's) did a very good job of getting our student body involved in various athletic contests by having tailgate parties, white outs, etc... and were very helpful in encouraging energetic but positive fan support at our athletic contests. We tried our best to assure good sportsmanship from our student-section crowd - being positive in all aspects of cheering and supporting our teams. Subjectively, much better results compared to years past 1. With SBO leadership (including SBO advisor), the MESS (Mighty Eagle Student Section) was organized to promote positive cheering and school spirit. It is a work in progress to continue to teach high expectations for sportsmanship and to define the "Doing Rowdy Right". The MESS has a section in the stands, they have bright yellow t-shirts, and everyone is included that wants to join. 2. Girls Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, and Softball teams honor opponent's seniors during our Senior Tribute Game (last home game). Opponents seniors are recognized and given flowers by the Skyline team. It is a tradition we have enjoyed for years! 3. AD's, SBO advisor, Cheer advisor, and Assistant principal met together to coordinate respective ideas about improving sportsmanship and team spirit. The SBO advisor added a new "school spirit/sportsmanship" duty to the Women's and Men's association responsibilities with the idea to focus on raising school spirit. It is nice to have this type of leadership from the student perspective. We think that one of the most important factors in the sportsmanship program is that we continue with our coaches being good role models. We feel that the way each individual coach represents them self to parents, officials, athletic participants, and the student body will help to set a precedent for Northridge High School upholding all sportsmanship expectations. This year we made sure we read the sportsmanship policy and had enough administrative presence to prevent problems. Implementing sportsmanship materials as part of the parent/athlete meetings that are held at the beginning of the season.
While sharing a bus with two other schools, coaches and athletes reviewed/learned the rules of golf and etiquette together. We also have briefing with in-coming sophomores to begin the year, where good sportsmanship etc is emphasized. We had students who went to an away game and painted their chests (bare). We turned it into a positive, and after discussion, they were instrumental in designing shirts for our rambunctious club. Applauded the Introduction of Visiting teams and players We need these students to participate in outside leadership conference so they hear the same message from someone else. We decreased the number of coaches interacting negatively with officials. One of our main focuses was to ensure that our athletes saw sportsmanship modeled by their coaches. We are working to improve every year, but we did start this. Judge was able to evaluate our rules and policies about sportsmanship. We are going to publish the new policies in our handbook next year for all students and parents. Some of the more important things we did was by honoring the good sports, me talking to the teams and letting them know I felt it was important and rewarding them, also talking to each parent group before each sports season with parents, also reading the sportsmanship statement before each game, having the coaches and captains meet before each contest, also having our sportsmanship statement posted throughout the school, getting my coaches and players to buy into by having their players help the opponent up or also giving them a compliment. This year, the Union Coaches Professional Learning Community was given the task to create a "Coaches Code of Conduct" where administrators could assist coaches in realizing boundaries and expectations while receiving protection as well. Among other reasons, we want our coaches to be a model of behavior and sportsmanship. After several versions, the Duchesne County School Board voted unanimously to adopt it as their policy as well. We believe that sportsmanship starts with our coaches who will influence our players and fans. Our fans have really worked hard to cheer for our team only. That has been a huge positive for our student body. Good sportsmanship begins with greeting the opposing team at the door, showing them to their locker room and letting the players see the coaches conducting themselves professionally before, during and after the game. We tried to make all visiting teams feel welcome at our school by having treats for them, and by being inviting and willing to help them out At the beginning of our winter sports activities, a member of the participating team or a student body officer read the sportsmanship message from center court prior to the flag ceremony instead of having the PA announcer read it. The crowd was more attentive to the student announcer than they had been to the PA announcer. We had a school wide Athletics Banquet and showed our "We Will" video and talked to our parents and students athletes about sportsmanship. It went great! The entire school helped with the video. I think our student body and even parents did a better job of cheering for our team and not against the other team after discussing our focus about cheering.
The Player-Parent Orientations that were held had a very positive effect on the behaviors of our parents and fans in the seats. PCHS is stressing the advantages for the teams in supporting positive cheering for our teams as opposed to negative comments, that we believe in the end only tend to fire up the other team. We also placed welcome signs for visiting teams and patrons at entrances to facilities and locker rooms for indoor events - - wrestling, basketball, and volleyball. I think we identified that we need to cheer and support our teams in a positive manner. It is easy to cheer when other teams make mistakes or in an attempt to be a distraction during volleyball serves or basketball free-throws, but we made a concerted effort in our school to just cheer for our teams and provide that support in those areas. As a result of the sportsmanship initiative our coaches, players, students, and parents have all become much more aware of the importance of encouraging and displaying good sportsmanship practices. Our student-athletes have truly begun to understand that athletics is an extension of the classroom and this initiative has helped motivate them to represent themselves, their school, and their sport in a way we can all be proud of! One of our main goals this year was to always cheer for our team and our team only. Meaning we wouldn't direct any negative comments to the opposing teams and/or officials. This was not only a goal for our student body but for the coaches and parents as well. If we did have any instances they were quickly addressed and taken care of. As a whole we felt like making this our focal point we had a huge success with it. On away games our cheerleaders would gather and bag all of the trash in our cheering section and leave a thank you note. All our coaches do an excellent job with sportsmanship. They discuss player and parent conduct during their pre-season meetings and are in control of themselves and their player. Student film was shared with teams, student council and student pep group (The Boom Squad) and feedback was given how to improve our student involvement, sportsmanship and activities. Guidelines and a Cheer book for students is being developed to assist in doing Rowdy right. Making announcement prior to games helped in crowd behavior. Always clean your area at home and away games Thank the officials after each game Our main emphasis is to treat all visitors at our school like guests. Visiting schools received refreshments (drinks and fruit) in their locker rooms before games. Our fans are taught to cheer for our team, not to cheer or jeer against other teams. Raising the money for special causes, which brought the school unity together. Our cheerleaders take a roll of trash bags with them to every away basketball game along with a note that says, "Thank you for inviting us into your Gym." At the end of the game, our cheer section is asked to pick up after themselves. The bag is tied shut with the note left on it next to a trash can. Our region sportsmanship summit was very successful and we feel like our AD and administrative efforts to emphasize sportsmanship all year really paid off in our students behaving very well. Cheer for your teams' successes, not the other teams' failures.
The coaches have been working with their captains to set the proper tone for games with our student body. This has been successful in numerous programs and has also contributed to our student fans being more respectful and positive.
