1 KNOWSCOPE A publication by St. Patrick s School Journalism Club 03 Inaugural Prayer Service It had been a tradition of St. Patrick's School long before my arrival. The day always had a significant impact on me. It signified the start of a new chapter in people's lives. It was the transition from childhood to adulthood. From youth to maturity. From dependence to independence. From ignorance to wisdom. Before the celebration, a multitude of students were bustling around the Parade Square, where the celebration was going to be held. I could see that some of the Secondary One students were a bit confused on where they were supposed to report to. As assembly commenced, an air of anticipation filled the Parade Square. After morning assembly was over, there was a short pause to mention instructions and teachers gave out the song sheets. The celebration finally began. A long procession proceeded in the center aisle - it consisted of altar servers, Subject Heads, Heads of Departments, the Principal and Vice-Principals, and the main celebrant, Father Jacob Ong. After the procession, the actual events followed. A series of prayers ensued, as a mark of respect for all religions. Even as a Catholic school, we still welcomed people from other faiths to come and join our community. It was a heartfelt moment when Father Ong revealed that he was a former student of the school. He even led the students on a merry cheer to lift their spirits. The Secondary One students were then invited to join the main assembly as the bell was rung. They flooded in, but in an organised manner. Class by class, each student was welcomed with much enthusiasm, into the Parade Square, officially welcomed into the Patrician family. In my opinion, this Inaugural Prayer Service would make the transition from a primary school to a secondary school, all the more seamless for them. To be embraced by a new family is a wonderful feeling, is it not? Written by Hugh Gardon, Secondary 3C. Page 1

2 Chinese New Year Celebration This Chinese New Year marked the beginning of the Zodiac sign, the Fire Monkey. The Fire Monkey represented an adventurous and ambitious year which was greatly reflected in this year s concert, from the lively music of the band to the mesmerising rhythms of the Zing Go Festival Drums group. The performance began with the St Patrick s School Military Band playing the lively Golden Snake Rhapsody and the ever catchy rhythm of Uptown Funk, which had Patricians singing and clapping to the beat. This was followed shortly after, with an amazing cultural dance performance by our fellow Patricians which allowed the students and teachers to further appreciate the beauty of Singapore s Chinese culture. Soon after, an exhilarating quiz was posed to the students and teachers, which had them learning more about the zodiac of the monkey in the Lunar New Year calendar, as well as winning prizes such as chocolates and a variety of other tasty treats. Next, Patricians were entertained by the annual festive lion dance which had never failed to bring joy and laughter to our students and teachers, through engaging dances and incredible stunts. Before the concert came to a close, the audience were treated to an exciting performance by the Zing Go Festival Drums troupe. The troupe performed many captivating and enriching rhythms which had students applauding and shouting along with the performers to the beat, and to some, even introducing them to a new aspect of Chinese cultural music and its beauty. We ended the celebration with the handing out of prizes to those who did well in the activities that were conducted during the Mother Tongue Fortnight, thus ending the concert on a high note. This Chinese New Year celebration was truly an enjoyable one, breathing life into our hearts, and helping both students and teachers to appreciate Chinese New Year from a totally new angle whether it be through dance, music or just pure knowledge. This was most definitely a memorable Chinese New Year celebration. Written by Miguel Ortega, Secondary 3E. Page 2

3 FSA Gaelic Football Video Being able to work with Fox Sports Academy was truly an extraordinary opportunity that taught our team a host of applicable skills. Last October, our school held an inter-school tournament on Gaelic Football, in an interactive attempt to raise awareness for the beloved Irish sport in Singapore. This caught the attention of Fox Sports Asia, and stirred their interest in broadcasting the event on their network! Not only were we fortunate enough to be selected to assist with filming, but also to be broadcast journalists! The Fox Sports Academy sent down one of their proficient producers to guide us and oversee the entire project. Mr Thariq, our indispensable mentor, taught us many valuable skills in a variety of subjects such as media editing, script writing and reporting to a large audience through a camera! Even though it may sound like fun, it was certainly arduous work. Even though the tournament itself wrapped up in three days, the process of scripting, editing, and compiling all the footage took over a month! Undoubtedly, the time was well spent. The shockingly stark difference in our broadcasting capabilities before and after the project was extremely overwhelming. Needless to say, we were thrilled when we were told that the video was to be telecast over Fox Sports Asia television network, on YouTube (under the heading: Gaelic Football Outreach), and on our school s website (under the heading: Gaelic Football Outreach Journalism & InfoComm Club Report). In addition, the video project was mentioned in Ireland s national publication, an online article dated 8th December 2015, at We could not have done such an excellent job without the support of Mr Peterson, the InfoComm Club, our teachers and Mr Thariq. We were veritably grateful for the opportunity and hope that we will be handed the responsibility of another project in the near future.
