4 AREAS OF FOCUS Youth Development Values and skills learned early are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y more young people are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. Children and teens are realizing their potential by learning values and positive behaviors, and exploring their unique talents and interests. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Healthy Living Being healthy means more than simply being physically active; it s maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. At the Y you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together. Social Responsibility We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. We are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join in or advocate in the name of stronger communities.

5 WHAT DOES YOUTH SPORTS AT THE YMCA MEAN TO YOU?

6 7 Pillars of YMCA Youth Sports Everyone Plays Everyone who registers is assigned to a team regardless of ability. Make sure everyone receives equal practice and playing time (at least half of every game). Safety First Character Development Positive Competition Family Involvement Sport for All Sport for Fun Make sure the equipment and facilities are safe. Teach the sport in a way where the skills are appropriate for children's developmental level. Use sports to the YMCA's five core values: Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Faith. Be a role model of sporting behavior and guiding your players to do the same. Make decisions that put the best interests of the children before winning the contest. Help children to learn to compete and cooperate in a competitive world. Encourage parents to help as volunteer coaches, officials, timekeepers, and team parents. Encourage the family to be at practices and games to support their child's participation. Encourage and appreciate the diversity of children in our society and encourage the children and their parents to do the same. Make sure that all children are included in every practice, game and team event. Remember the sports are for the kids; let them have fun. Avoid dominating the activity to the point that it destroys children's enjoyment of the sport.

7 COACH CODE OF CONDUCT 1) To allow all youth the opportunity to participate. 2) To provide a wholesome and educational experience. 3) To allow the participants a chance to have fun. PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TEAM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! CHECK YOUR DAILY FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM ME!

8 ROSTERS Call & your team as early as possible, latest possible date Friday, 3/18/16. If your practice day/time does not work for a parent have them me. You may receive several rosters changes before the season starts, check for changes I do not notify on most changes. Should the /phone provided not work please contact me and I may have additional # s. ROSTERS ARE FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, PLEASE DO NOT SHARE!

9 HOW TEAMS ARE FORMED By request (for a coach or teammate) By age/grad/sex BASEBALL: 3&4 YO COED, KINDER COED, 1 ST /2 ND COED, 3 RD /4 TH COED, 5 TH /6 TH COED, 7 TH /9 TH COED VOLLEYBALL: 1 ST /2 ND COED, 3 RD /4 TH COED, 5 TH /6 TH COED, 7 TH /9 TH COED PREMIER SOCCER: U8, U10, U13 By school By subdivision Random assignment No tryouts; No no practice, no play rule

10 PLAYER PROTECTION & EQUIPMENT Baseball Players need a glove. Volleyball players need knee pads. Soccer players need shin guards Jerseys You will receive your jerseys at practice! You will need to me right after your first practice and give to the practice supervisor the night of your first practice!!

13 DO PRACTICES Have a plan (drills, stations, fun games)! Always start with a warm-up/stretch! Involve parents! Have Fun! Do Hustle or Heart Awards! Have parties! Especially a end of the year one! DON T Scrimmage the whole time! Harshly criticize, instead explain and encourage! Do it all by yourself! Be alone with a child.

14 PRACTICES Starting date week of 3/21/16 1 hour per week on the same field/court. (except premier) You may not move/cancel your practice unless you contact me. You are allowed ONLY 1 practice per week. Practice equipment will be placed on field/court. At your first practice you will receive a packet of waivers, every parent/guardian is required to sign a waiver in order for their child to play! PLEASE WEAR YOUR COACH SHIRT TO THE FIRST 2 PRACTICES!

15 PRACTICES Gym/Field Supervisor on site during practice, they are there to help! Don t be afraid to ask. Problems tell the supervisor

18 SATURDAY GAMES How to cancel or reschedule a game the YMCA, which I will forward to opposing coach. BOTH coaches have to agree for the game to be moved. Minimum of 7 days to move a game in-season Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your game PLEASE WEAR YOUR COACH SHIRT TO ALL GAMES! ONLY COACHES AND PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED ON THE BENCH DURING A GAME (ALL ASSISTANTS MUST COMPLETE THE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION).

19 DO GAMES Have a lineup! Wear your coaches shirt! Arrive at least 10 minutes early! Encourage! Talk with the referee before the game! DON T Play the same lineup the whole game! Harshly criticize, instead explain and encourage! Make it about winning! Yell at the referee.

20 FACILITIES No Smoking or other use of tobacco products on YMCA Property No Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages on YMCA Property. No pets allowed on YMCA fields. Service dogs are allowed for the disabled. Have your team pick up any trash after games/practices All children (siblings of players) must be attended to

28 RAIN OUTS/MAKE UPS Decision will be made by 7:30am on Saturdays and 4:30pm on weekdays For game rain-outs, coaches will be contacted by the YMCA the following week to reschedule. We will schedule make up games and provide officials. Practice rain outs are up to the coach s discretion. CALL THE RAINOUT HOTLINE FIRST

29 PICTURES, TROPHIES AND AWARDS YMCA PRACTICES 4/11-15 at your practice location You will be given your exact time a week before pictures along with picture forms YMCA will provide the end of the season medal. If the team wants trophies, they will have to be arranged independently. You will receive your pictures and medals the last week of the season. If there is a issue with the pictures, please contact N-the-Zone ( ) directly.

32 ABANDONED CHILD PROCEDURES Ask all parents to stay at all practices and games If they leave do following: Tell the gym supervisor or call the YMCA for other contact information if they cannot reach parents Coach will ask the assistant coach or another parent to stay until abandoned child is picked up, if he/she cannot Never be alone with a child!

33 CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING You will receive an with instructions Take the volunteer training Must be complete by 3/18/16 me the certificate

34 CHILD ABUSE REPORTING PROCEDURES The YMCA has a no tolerance position on child abuse If you suspect child abuse you can report it to any Director in the YMCA or call CPS (Child Protection Service)
