FROM The CVV President By Billy Bob Evans SASS# Hi all! It s starting to sound like a broken record when I comes to rained out match, our November match was rained out. We are planning on having our December match but if we get rain that weekend like we have been there is a good chance we could end up canceling the match but I hope not. As for our election one way or another we will hold them at our January match. As I have indicated, I will NOT rerun for president and Red Coniston has decided not to rerun as Treasurer, BUT Sidewinder Sid has decided to rerun as VP. And as you know Shady McClary would like to run for president, so someone please nominate him. I would like to put my name in the hat for the unfilled Executive officer possession, so I can concentrate on growing Wild Bunch. We still need someone for Secretary and Treasurer.. FROM THE LSFSC PRESIDENT By Rock Rotten SASS # The Texas State Black Powder Championship is in the books and boy was it a great time for all. First off, lack of rain threatened to keep us from shooting black powder then the threat of rain almost caused a postponement. Talk about Texas weather. We had 42 shooters of which about 35 shot black powder. Most rarely shoot black so it was a lesson in humility. You definitely cannot get too concerned about shooting fast or clean. But it did make for a very relaxed and jovial atmosphere not without a major explosion by yours truly. I cannot believe the 10 gauge didn t go thru the shelf hell, it barely made a dent. I am now offering rubber mat bullet proof vests for sale at reasonable prices. For me, the most noticeable thing for the weekend was just how good the range looked. The huge burn pile is now a small mound of ashes and unburned rock siding that will soon be bulldozed under. Besides that, the general appearance was neat and there is very little evidence left of the tornado damage. Now we just need to build a few new stages and get that Alamo back before we all forget. Special thanks go out to Shady McLarry and Chula Kat who either did it themselves or organized the bulk of the work.

They are truly the heart and soul of Lone Star Frontier Shooting Club! I hope everyone got a nice door prize. So the world continues spiraling down. Extremists going off the rails, progressives spewing their gun control bull crap, and our spineless president hasn t got a clue. ROCK ROTTEN CONTINUED 2016 elections cannot get here soon enough. I find it quite interesting how Donald Trump keeps calling it like it is and the left keeps trying to discredit him. The silent conservative majority is not buying it for one second. Of course Ted Cruz still gets my vote and he is steadily gaining in the polls. The RINO s are dropping like flies. Good riddance please, no more Bush s. Now let s get Hillary and Bernie out of the mix and maybe we ll get somewhere. I cannot believe that woman is still walking free. Take Obama to the jailhouse with you. I ve heard enough of his treasonous doings and remarks. Go France. They ve been raiding mosques and turning up lots of illegal firearms. Whodathunkit? Well, me. Remember folks, a new year brings a new law. OPEN CARRY! Now I won t have to worry about that 1911 sticking out from my skinny self and I can regulate the Walther PPK to reliving my James Bond persona. I haven t carried a whole lot in the past. Pretty much only when I expect to be in questionable places. But lately, I ve felt naked without it. I ve even brought it with me to Amarillo. In case you haven t taken an airline flight with a weapon, it is not a big deal. Lock it up properly in a case, unloaded, of course; declare to the ticket attendant that you have a firearm; sign a document stating it s unloaded; put your ammoi n your checked back in a proper box (I use my plastic boxes); and it s pretty much smooth sailing. No funny looks, no unreasonable searches, and you re prepared where ever you may go in the United States. Just be sure to check reciprocations for CCL in the state you will be traveling to.
3 ROCK ROTTEN CONTINUED Christmas is just a few short weeks away and I m almost ready. I just need the delivery guys to do their jobs. I ve had great success with all deliveries and have never had anything stolen of my porch. Knock on wood. I hope everyone has a wonderful merry Christmas and a joyous New Year. Hopefully, we all get something to bring to the range. Winter s here but the shoots go on. Winter Range will be here very quickly. So load up some cowboy rounds and get out and exercise your 2nd Amendment right. Practice with your concealed carry weapon. You may very well need it. Doc Holliday s First Gunfight By German Jack Fordern SASS# When we left John H. Holliday DDS, he had gone into practice with Dr. John Seegar in Dallas. As a man of great reputation, Dr. Seegar insisted Dr. Holliday must not drink or gamble, and must be actively involved in Church. Dr. John Holliday really did well. He was an excellent dentist; he even won three blue ribbons at the first State Fair of Texas in October. He won for dentures made out of cast gold, dentures made from porcelain, and a denture where the teeth were carved from ivory and imbedded in vulcanized rubber. For all his success, Holliday had been raised where gaming (gambling) was respected as the sport of southern gentleman and drinkin always went with gamblin. He soon found that lots of both could be found in several places overlooked by the law. Down on the Trinity River was Frogtown and the black community tent city of Freedman s Town, and west of Dallas was Eagle Ford. In 1874, Doc Holliday became a regular at all 3 places. Dr. Seegar soon found out about these activities, and fired Holliday. Holliday opened his own office, but did not do well. He began gambling more in order to pay his bills, often in saloons. This was definitely illegal in Dallas. The law said you cannot gamble and drink in the SAME room. Soon, he was arrested for playing KENO, and spent 10 days in jail. He became known simply as Doc here. With his reputation shot in Dallas, he moved up to the wide open community of Denison, Texas. He did dental work in the mornings, gambled and drank alcoholic spirits in the afternoon and evenings. In 1875, the boom in Denison went bust, so Holliday ventured back to Dallas for another try. While he was in Denison, he had made a set of teeth for a saloon owner that had skipped out on paying him for the dental service. Now back in Dallas, Holliday discovered the man had a saloon there. He went to collect the debt owed. The man laughed, refused to pay, and drew his pistol. In self defense, Doc Holliday pulled his own Colt s Navy Revolver and fired first, hitting the man in his hand. They were both arrested; Holliday was charged with assault with intent to murder, and jailed. Dr. Seegar saw it all in the newspaper; he came to Doc s aid and hired an attorney to defend and help Holliday. Dr. Seegar did not bail him out of jail, however. He hired the lawyer, because he wanted to help his own reputation in Dallas. Doc s conviction would hurt Seegar s reputation, since Holliday had worked with him at one time. At the trial, Dr. Holliday was indeed found NOT GUILTY. Holliday again opened a small dental office in Dallas, but Dr. Seegar soon asked him to leave town for good. Doc had another one of his awful coughing spells with blood from his lungs and visited the local medical doctor. The MD told Holliday he was sure it was consumption, rather than the pneumonia Holliday always hoped it was. Holliday was forced to confront what he had always denied up to that time. The MD suggested he go to Colorado to improve his health, allowing him to live a little longer. Instead, he drank more and more, staying around until his KENO trial. He was found guilty, fined $10, and disgraced even more by the stories in the newspaper. He decided to move again. By then, he was coughing more; both situations caused him to think it really might be best to go elsewhere. In 1875, Doc Holliday, headed west to Ft Griffin, a town with ample amounts of gambling and drinking. Thus far, he had accidently killed a black man back home in the South, and had shot and wounded a man in Dallas; more was to come out there on the frontier. Stay tuned. German Jack Fordern (a.k.a. Johnny Baker Jr.) is a historian from Dallas, TX. 4 SASS Convention Report 2015 By Willie Earp SASS #19022 TG Life The SASS Convention was held on December 2 to 6, 2015 at the Green Valley Resort (GVR) in Henderson, Nevada. You might recall that last convention, which was supposed to be held in December of 2014, was held in January of this year, in San Antonio. The GVR is a new, sprawling hotel complex which offers all the ammenities of the higher priced hotels on the Las Vegas strip, at a more reasonable price, and it delivers that in spades! Lone Star Laura and I always enjoy the convention as a chance to visit with SASS royalty, enjoying the cowboy action ambiance and social aspects, vendors which specifically cator to our sport and the ability to attend numerous seminars which cover everything from shooting better to old west history. The highlight of the convention is the Victorian Dinner and Ball, where everyone dresses to the nines and enjoys period dancing to a live band. Yours truly was also there in his capacity as Territorial Governor (TG) fo the Trinity Valley Regulators in Arlington. If you would like a report of what happened at the TG Summit, then I suggest that you contact your club TG for that information. Beyond the convention, Laura and I also take in Las Vegas, where we will tour one of the fancy hotels, eat out at fantastic restaurants and see a show. This year was no exception with 4th row tickets to see Olivia Newton-John at the Flamingo. The objective of this musing is not how much fun we had, but to relate to you what is happening with SASS and our sport, directly from the top, Misty Moonshine, the SASS CEO. First let me relate that SASS has a membership reward of $5 that it will pay to the SASS affiliated club of your choice, when you renew your membership. The next time that you renew, just list Commanche Valley Vigilantes or Lone Star Frontier Shooting Club as your club, and SASS will pay them that money. This is even more important now, because SASS has instituted a Club Affiliation Fee, if the club falls below 100% in its SASS membeships and we fall in that area. Next, the SASS Wild Bunch has relized that when they got rid of the paper copy fo the SASS Cowboy Chronicle, that they lost a very important communication AND recruiting tool. Not only does this generation prefer the older technology, but fewer seem to read the electronic version as well. In addtion, many of the clubs used the old chronicles as hand-outs for prospecitve members. To help with this problem, they announced that SASS would introduce a quarterly magazine, the first of which you should expect to see this next month. This will be published in addtion to the electronic version of the Cowboy Chronicle and not cost you anything extra. Lastly let me relate that SASS is keenly aware of the fall off in the numbers of our shooters in this sport. SASS has registered approximately 130,000 badge numbers so far, however 67,000 of those are considered inactive. The SASS Life members are only 9,500 of those, by the way. The fall off in active memberships affects EVERYTHING that they can do for the members and they are evaluating everything for its bang for the buck. Sadly the SASS Convention will be getting the axe this next year, so there will not be one in By the way, the TG s are scrambling to find a new venue for their Summit. Misty views that we are under a new generation and doing business as we always have, is not good for the health of cowboy action. She encourages EVERYONE to become a cowboy action recruiter and become more active in their local club. On a more personal level, using our Membership Coordinator, Rio Hondo Rob, is one of the key people for you, when you find someone new. Misty is actively looking for ideas on not only how to recruit new members, but to bring back old ones as well. I would suggest that anything you can think of be related to SASS HQ, howver you might also consider talking to one of our club officers, because they are also very interested in this aspect as well. Have a SAFE Holiday Season a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
