Work in groups of three or four. Tell your fairy tale to your group. Are there any similarities in the different fairy tales? If students do not know the story, you could: watch the Disney film read the Grimm brothers version of the tale, available online via do a jigsaw reading of the text at the end of these notes: give each student a paragraph or sentence (depending on numbers) and get them to line up in chronological order without showing each other their piece of text. 5 Task 5: speaking about sleep If you allow enough time for students to speak to most people in the class and answer most but not all of the questions, this will give a purpose to the feedback session: to work out as a whole class who usually sleeps the longest, who has slept the longest in their life, etc. Task 6: speaking about fairy tales brother child husband king old man/woman prince princess queen sister wife human part human animal devil fairy monster witch bird cow fox frog hen horse 1. Students may need to add other characters to the lists in order to talk about fairy tales from their countries. 2. Which are good and which are bad may vary from story to story and from country to country. For example, the monster in Beauty and the Beast is good. 3. Again, which usually happen at the beginning [B] and which usually happen at the end [E] may vary, but typically: at the beginning Somebody is born. Somebody dies. Somebody predicts that something will happen. Something is forbidden. Somebody does something which is forbidden. at the end There is a fight. Somebody dies. Somebody is punished. Somebody solves a problem. Somebody gets married. 4. Yet again, which characters usually do the things above will vary. The progression from steps 1 4 should prepare students for the speaking task Page 5 of 7

6 5. While students make notes, monitor and supply vocabulary as needed. Encourage students to start with Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a [character] who and end with and they all lived happily ever after. Finish with class feedback on any similarities between the stories. NB When telling a story orally, it is quite common to start it and end it using the past simple, but to tell the main events in the present simple for dramatic effect. For this reason it is probably best not to correct shifts between past and present. However, if students write the fairy tale for homework, it should all be in the past and it is probably best to point this out to them before they write it. Also note that when we quote people in writing, the subject and verb are inverted after the quotation when the subject is a noun, for example: I love you, said the prince. not: I love you, the prince said. Nowadays, the subject and verb are not usually inverted when the subject is a pronoun: I love you, he said. not: I love you, said he. Homework suggestions: Students write their fairy tale. Students write another student s fairy tale. Students write a report of their finding from task 5, including graphs or pie charts Page 6 of 7

7 Extra lead in Sleeping Beauty Once upon a time, long, long ago, there were a king and queen who desperately wanted children. One day, a frog came to see the queen and said, You will have a daughter before the end of the year. As the frog predicted, the queen gave birth to a baby girl. The king and queen held a party to celebrate the birth. They invited their family and friends and all the fairies in the country except for one. At the end of the party, the twelve fairies gave gifts to the baby. One gave virtue, another gave beauty, another gave wealth The twelfth fairy was going to speak when suddenly the thirteenth fairy arrived. She was very angry because she had not been invited. She said, When the princess is 15 years old, she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Then she turned and left. Everybody was very frightened, but the twelfth fairy said, I cannot stop the bad fairy s wish, but I can change it a little: the princess will prick her finger on a spindle, but she will not die she will sleep for 100 years. The king and queen ordered all the spindles in the country to be destroyed and the princess grew up to be lovely, modest, beautiful, clever and kind. One day when the princess was 15, the king and queen were away and the princess decided to explore the castle. She climbed to the top of an old tower and opened a little wooden door. Behind the door, there was an old woman spinning. What are you doing? asked the princess. I m spinning, replied the old woman. And what is that thing which is turning so quickly? asked the princess. The princess reached out and touched the spindle. It pricked her finger and immediately she fell into a very deep sleep. Everybody and everything in the castle fell asleep too. The years passed and a thick forest grew around the castle. Princes from all over the world came to rescue the princess, but the forest was so thick that they could not get through. Then one day, 100 years after the princess fell asleep, Prince Charming came to the forest. The trees became flowers and moved apart to let the prince pass. He went into the castle and found the princess asleep in the tower. She was so beautiful that he bent down and kissed her. She woke up and looked at him, and they fell in love. The rest of the castle was now awake too and they organised a wedding party. The prince and princess got married and they lived happily ever after Page 7 of 7
