Summer Wow! What an amazing year. A big thank you and well done to all the children who have committed hours of time to practice sessions and competition opportunities over the year. Your enthusiasm towards all of the different sporting events has been fantastic, as has been the willingness of our parents to provide transport to all of these different events. Without your support our achievements would not be possible. All of this hard work was rewarded on Thursday 9 th July when we received the Primary School Games, School of the Year Award Primary School Games School of the Year Award As you know Monkspath school has participated in numerous sporting events and has been recently rewarded for this. A group of Year 6 pupils were honoured to be asked by Mrs Church to go to Solihull Library to receive this reward for the school. On every event to do with sports we get a set amount of points depending on where we come (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd ) and this year we were fortunate enough to win the South Solihull Primary School Games School of the Year Award. By Carys Year 6 Well done to all of our sports councillors who have helped Mrs Church this year; collating data, being sports leaders, promoting sport and collecting permission slips. I hope you have enjoyed the role and you can recommend the position to other children in your class for next year.

Year 6 Cricket A girls team and two boys teams took part in the Kwik Cricket festivals at Blossomfield Cricket Club. The girls were victorious in all of their matches and the boys also achieved success in a number of their games, finishing in 2 nd place overall. Cricket is very much enjoyed by many children at the school, with large groups of them playing matches during playtimes and lunchtime. Year 4 and Year 6 organised a house cricket competition last week. Much fun was had by all on a very warm Friday morning. The overall champions were HOY. Well done everyone for showing passion and respect during the competition. Tag Rugby On a beautiful Friday morning, Mr James led his tag rugby squads to Birmingham Exiles where both teams played four games in the morning. Team 2 drew two games, then won the next two, qualifying for the gold group. Meanwhile team 1 lost two and won two games which placed them in the Bronze group for the afternoon matches. After our filling lunches, each team played five more matches. Team 2 drew two and won three, making us unbeaten and team 1 won two, lost two and drew one. After a nervous wait the results were announced. Team 1 finished 5 th in their group and team 2 finished equal top of the gold group, scoring the same amount of tries as St Alphege, but unfortunately conceding one more, putting us into second place, but this still meant we had qualified for the next round. The Solihull and East Birmingham finals took place on a cold Friday at the end of June. Nine teams in total were involved, so a mini league was played. We won the first four games easily, but then faced a very impressive St Alphege who knew they had to beat us. The final score was 7-4 to them. We won the next two games, with the last game being the important decider. Luckily with excellent team work we managed to secure the victory. We waited anxiously as the results were announced. 9 th, 8 th, 7 th, 6 th, 5 th, 4 th, we knew we were in the top 3. We all cheered as Monkspath were announced winners of the Tag Rugby festival. We are now looking forward to our visit to a WASPS game where we will meet the players and go on to the pitch in September. Well done everyone a fantastic team effort By Jamie Year 6

Rounders Two rounders teams took part in the South Solihull Tournament on Thursday 11 th June at Lode Heath School. 20 teams participated on a very hot evening. Team 1 won all of their games and qualified for the semi-finals. Team 2 narrowly missed out after a tough match against Greswold 1. Team 1 then played Greswold 2 in the semi-finals and secured a 4-2 victory to play Greswold 1 in the final. Due to some big hitting from Greswold 1, Monkspath were defeated 4-1 ½ in the final. Great team work was shown by everyone along with honesty and ambition. Quad kids Three teams of athletes from Year 3 and 4 took park in the quad kids event on Wednesday 10 th June at Arden Secondary School. All 24 children had to take part in a 50m sprint, 400m run, a javelin throw and a standing long jump. Excellent self-belief and determination was shown by all children that took part. Out of 13 teams competing, Monkspath came 9 th, 8 th and 1 st. This meant that 30 of our athletes would go on to the Warwickshire Games to represent South Solihull on July 1 st. Hockey Festival Third time lucky with the weather as two teams competed in the South Solihull Hockey Tournament. Due to the expert coaching from Mr Davies, both teams won all of their games in the group stages, taking both teams through to the semi-finals. Lots of passion was shown by all four teams involved and Monkspath found it difficult to find space to use their skills and score. After 3 minutes of extra time the scores on both pitches were still 0-0. A long hit from the centre line into the goal was then introduced, proving much trickier that it sounds! Unfortunately both teams lost out leaving Kineton Green to battle against Oak Cottage for the title. Great sportsmanship was shown, and the teams were gracious in their defeat. Excellent teamwork once again.

MISS-HITS Tennis On Thursday 18 th June a group of Year 1 and 2 girls that have been involved in the Miss-Hits tennis programme, travelled to The Priory Club in Edgbaston to receive a workshop from Judy Murray, the creator of this programme. It was a very exciting morning as the workshop was also being filmed by BBC Breakfast News. The girls had so much fun, as well as receiving a t-shirt and lunch. This happened during The Aegon Classic so the girls then had the opportunity to watch some of the best women tennis players in the world. Their behaviour was exemplary and they watched the match with great interest, asking lots of relevant questions. We hope this has fuelled the girls interest to continue to enjoy their tennis. If any girls are interested in participating in the Miss-Hits programme in the summer holidays, please contact Claire Williamson on Golf Festivals All of the Year 3 children had a fun morning at Tudor Grange Pitch and Putt competing in the golf festival on Tuesday 23 rd June. Honesty and teamwork were again shown throughout the morning, with many of the children achieving success in sport. On Thursday 18 th June 50 children from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed at Shirley Golf Club in the South Solihull Festival. Although there was a disappointing turn out from other schools, the Monkspath children had great fun, led by the excellent leaders from Lode Heath School. They all worked on various different skills such as: chipping onto targets, tapping carefully into rings, hitting different coloured cones and so on. The overall score from the Year 4 team of 1158 was very impressive. From this event a team of Year 5 golfers went on to represent South Solihull at the Warwickshire Games on July 1 st. By Carys Year 6

Borough Athletics The Solihull Borough Athletics took place over two evenings on Monday 22 nd June and Thursday 25 th June. On both evenings it was fantastic to see all of the children supporting each other and staying late into the evening. We had some fantastic individual performances resulting in a number of medals including Gold for Jamie (yr6) in the javelin, Gold for Rajan (Yr6) high jump, silver for Hannah (yr6) in the high jump, bronze for Ayo (Yr6) in the long jump, and silver for Charlie (yr5) in the Javelin. Also a special mention must go to Alicia (yr6) for finishing 5 th in the girls 75m sprint and both the girls and boys relay teams for qualifying for the finals and finishing a very creditable 7 th. A very good job from all our athletes this year. Hope you are full of energy ready for our indoor athletics club for Year 5 and 6 on Mondays at Alderbrook School. Sports Days Many thanks to all of the parents who came along to support the children in their sports day. Many children reflected the values of the Sainsbury s School Games: Passion, self-belief, teamwork, honesty, determination and respect and had fun taking part in competition. The results were Year 5 and 6 Winners HOLMES, Year 3 and 4 Winners HOY, Years 1 and 2- Winners ADDLINGTON Year 2 Football Festival Twenty children from Year 2 had the opportunity to take part in the FA skills afternoon of football at Lode Heath, organised by Carly Davies. During the year, all Year 2 children have received coaching from Carly during their PE lessons and this was an opportunity to get some of these schools together to put some of these skills into a game situation. Many thanks to Mrs Billingsley for taking the children along to this festival.

Our Warwickshire Games On the hottest day of the year so far, 30 children from Year 2, 30 from Year 3, 12 from Year 5 and 11 from Year 6 gathered in the studio for the long day ahead. We covered ourselves in suncream and climbed aboard the coach to Warwick University in Coventry. The rounders team played their first game with a narrow margin between the two teams. Despite losing we still had our hopes high. We lost our next game by half a rounder again. Fortunately we won our next game easily. We were placed in the bronze group and during the afternoon, smashed it, winning all our games easily. We finished 9 th out of 16 teams. Our highlight of the year though was beating the teachers by 1 ½ rounders. Thanks to Mrs Ricketts and Miss Grant for giving up their time to coach us on a Tuesday evening. By Josh H (year6) Our Year 2 multi skills and Year 3 quad kids teams demonstrated excellent determination in the heat and worked incredibly hard to produce their best performances. The Year 3 team did particulary well as they faced Year 4 children in most of their events. Our Year 5 golf team were amazing finishing with a bronze medal, alongside our inclusive archery team who also achieved Gold and silver medals. Well done Maezi and Tyler. Cheerleading Festival Well done to our Key Stage 1 cheerleaders from Monkeys who represented us at the cheerleading festival a fantastic job everyone, especially as you were only a very small group. Also our Key Stage 2 group had the honour of opening the show, demonstarting the skills you can learn in cheerleading if you persevere, including some very impressive lifts.

Year 5 Dodgeball Festival The Year 5 children took part in the first ever Synergy Dodgeball Festival on Tuesday 7 th July at Tudor Grange School. Three teams of Year 5 children took part in what was a very exciting and competitve competition. Miss Adams and Miss Rogers cheered on the teams with much passion and the teams started to plan tactical manouevres as they progressed into the semi-finals. In a thrilling final, Monkspath came out on top, narrowly beating Sharmans Cross. Well done Year 5 another impressive trophy to add to our collection and excellent sportsmanship shown throughout. Physical Participation Records Well done to Jemima from Year 5 who has achieved her gold participation award and Matthew, Harry and Jess who had achieved their Bronze Award. Year 4, you will be receiving you blue PPR forms in September. I hope we will have more children receiving their bronze, silver and gold awards next year. Year 6 A final goodbye to Year 6. You ve been great sports ambassadors all year. We all wish you lots of luck at your new schools. Keep up your participation in sports we want you to have healthy, active lifestyles when you are adults too.
