1 Big Bend Community College; 7662 Chanute Street N.E. Moses Lake, WA Outside Finally February 1, 2016 This week (February 01) marks the first week the Lady Vikings are able to get outside. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get onto our field and enjoy the thrill you get when you step on the dirt; the grass field behind ours seems to do the job. Although it is chilly, we enjoy not being crammed in the gym for fielding drills. Our outfielders are especially thankful that they get some fly balls. We are back and forth from the gym and the field to this day, but soon we will be seen outside on our field day in and day out. Vikes View Making the decision to go to Big Bend Community College was a great decision for me and for my academics. Every day I wake up early, around 6:00 A.M for 6:30 A.M workouts, but sometimes I like to pamper myself and snooze the alarm till 6:15. After workouts are done I go straight to my room and get ready for my 9:15 A.M. class. Lucky me, I only have that class twice a week, so when I don t have that class I can go straight back to bed. Then my next class isn t until 11:45 which is super nice because I have a little break in between my first and second class. Days I don t have my early class I can sleep until about 10:30. After my last class, I either go to the library, study or do all my homework. Other days, I go back to my room, relax, eat some food, and wait until practice comes around. Practice time varies depending on the weather. Some days we ll go outside and practice for about an hour, but if it s too cold we go inside at 7:30-9:30 P.M. which is pretty hard on our schedule but we learn to cope with it. After practice, I go back to my room, take a shower, and eat something quick for dinner, and then head to bed; preparing myself for another day! -Pashence Korten (#3)

2 Player Spotlight Morgan Goslin Tifani Schorzman Brittany Hosley #11 #9 #15 Freshman, Morgan Goslin is from The Dalles, Oregon and plays third base for the Lady Vikes. Morgan hopes to graduate from BBCC with a transfer degree to send her to a four year where she can major in kinesiology and sports psychology. Morgan works hard for the Lady Vikes by splitting her time catching bullpen and making sure she gets her fielding in during practices. When she is not on the field, Morgan enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, friends, and her family by lounging around or going outside and enjoying the weather. Morgan is very close with her father when it comes to softball and you can tell that by just asking her what her favorite motivational quote is. Her dad tells her before every game: Have fun and play hard. Tifani Schorzman is a returner for the BBCC Lady Vikes and made an impression last year as the starting catcher. Tifani is from Rathdrum, Idaho and continues her work as the Viking catcher to help lead the team to the NWAC s. As far as schooling, Tifani remains undecided about a major but she has her heart set on continuing her softball career. Tifani chose BBCC due to the nearness to her family and hometown, as well as the small size of the school. She has been playing softball for 14 years and when she is not on the field, Tifani enjoys snowboarding, hanging out at the lake and training for softball. The Lady Vikings are grateful that this duel sport athlete is now a part of their family. Brittany Hosley has already made herself known on the volleyball court for BBCC and is now excited to get onto the softball field. Freshman, Brittany is from Troy, Idaho and is a utility player for the Vikes. When she is not on the field or volleyball court, Brittany likes outdoor activities and spending time with her family. Her aspirations is to get her transfer degree and then master in criminal justice at a 4 year. Brittany s favorite quote is life is worth living as long as there is a laugh in it by L.M. Motgomery. 3 BBCC Clinics The Vikings clinics were a success this year. We estimate that we had 130 girls attend the four weekends worth of clinics. Our ladies enjoyed seeing the younger girls that attended every camp improve from week to week. We received many compliments and excitement for our camps, and we wish to continue these in future years. It was a great way for our Lady Vikings to give back to the community and be role models to the younger girls. Thank you to everyone who attended and help with the clinics! We hope you will come support us during the season or stop by and say hello! Countdown!!! T-Minus 26 DAYS to our 1 st game in Richland! February marks the opening to our 2016 softball season. That weekend will be a crossover tournament held in Richland, WA. Our opponents at this time are unknown but our BBCC Vikes are ready and excited to hit the field and make some noise!

If you come at noon on the first day you leave at noon on the second day. However, you do get to stay in the dorms, practice with the team, and possibly attend a game. Everything depends on our mutual schedules. One question we get a lot: Do I have to be a senior to visit? NO! In fact, we have many juniors and sophomores visiting our school. For more information visit: softball page or call Coach or raym@bigbend.edu Message from Coach Ray Count them, 17 days to game one of the 2016 season and the players are getting a little excited and a little nervous too. I think they are more nervous about not being outside more than a couple days so far. I am sure they will get over it. At the same time, I have to start the planning process for the next Annual Recruits Workout. The workout is our event where we invite our top twenty five recruits for the next year (2017) to come to campus for a series of two day workouts. This will be our fifth annual workout and all 2017 recruits on our current list will receive the flyer by . You will also receive a copy of Viking Softball Notes that outlines what recruits have to do to be successfully recruited by us here at BBCC. The event is by invitation only and to be eligible to receive an invite, you must be on our list. Last year 25 invites were sent out and 16 were accepted. At the conclusion, 11 were selected, 8 were offered scholarships, and 1-7 and 9 signed. Those 8 new Vikings will be highlighted in the next 3 editions of our newsletter, starting with this one. More details will be coming out in the next few weeks, but the dates will be: Sep and 16-17, this fall.

5 New Signees ( ) Taylor Ferguson Position: 2B, C Hometown: Pocatello, ID Taylor Ferguson signed to BBCC softball on January 20 at Century High School surrounded by her family. While Big Bend ended up this talented athlete, we were not the only ones in the running. Taylor got attention from Yakima Valley Community College, Clark Junior College, and Green River Community College. Her outstanding batting average, on base percentage and stolen bases gives Taylor a promising future with the Vikings. She hopes to help the team with her speed on the base paths and in the field next year. During her visit, Taylor loved the atmosphere of the college and the way the coaches care about the team by truly getting to know the girls and understanding their abilities to better the team as a whole. The Lady Vikings are thrilled to welcome Taylor Ferguson, daughter of Jay and Rickelle Ferguson, to the team! Hailey Huelsman Position: LHP, 1B Hometown: Pocatello, ID Daughter of Mark and Shelley Huelsman, senior of Highland High School, Hailey signed her letter of intent on January 21. Before her visit to Moses Lake and a little coaxing from Coach Ray, Hailey was convinced she was not going on to play collegiate softball; due to this fact she was not looking at any other schools and thus became drawn to BBCC. During her visit Hailey enjoyed the size of the campus, Coach Ray and Coach Al s enthusiasm, and our Lady Vikings welcoming attitudes. Good thing the visit was a success and we are pleased to welcome Hailey Huelsman to the BBCC softball family! Bailey Nickelson Position: OF, 2B Hometown: Reno, NV Bailey Nickelson was the first of the recruiting class to sign to the BBCC Lady Vikes. Ever since she took a trip to Washington as a little girl, Bailey fell in love with the state; you can say it was fate that she would return to Washington to continue her softball career. When Bailey made her visit to Big Bend she loved the welcoming attitude and embrace from our Lady Vikings, while also enjoying a true view into the college life of a student-athlete. Daughter of Jim and Debbie Nickelson, Bailey is a four year varsity player and we are thankful to have her on the Vikings team. WELCOME TO THE VIKES FAMILY!!
