1 Shag Rag June 2007 Vol. XIIII, No 6 Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music PRESIDENT S MESSAGE by David Rodgers NVSC s Back to the Future Party will be held on Saturday, June 9 th from 7:30PM til midnight at American Legion Post 10 in Manassas, VA. The NVSC social committee has made plans for a fun filled night for everyone who attends. Come on out and party with old and new NVSC members and other guests who attend. See the flyer in this Shag Rag for directions and additional information. On July th NVSC will be holding our 12 th annual Capital Shag Classic weekend long event at the Dulles Hilton Hotel. The Classic committee has been planning and getting things organized for months to ensure that this will be a first-class shag dance weekend for everyone who attends. Make your hotel reservations early if you want to stay close to the action while rooms are still available at the group rate for the event. Buy your weekend ticket for $75.00 by July 1 st before the price for a ticket goes up to $ See the flyer in this Shag Rag for additional details. On Saturday afternoon, August 11 th NVSC will have a Reunion Picnic at the home of Laura and Bobby Payne (Marcia Conway s daughter and son-in-law) in Manassas, VA. Mark your calendars and reserve this date for socializing, swimming, dancing and plenty of food. Further information about this event will appear in the July and August Shag Rags. June is the last month of NVSC s 2007 Membership Drive. Please encourage friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. to come out and join you on Wednesday nights when we dance at Rene s. Also, invite them to come participate in our parties and the picnic. Be sure to welcome any new people you see at Rene s and encourage them to come back again and join NVSC. Until the end of June if a new member joins our Club and puts your name on the application form where it says, How did you hear about our club you will earn one raffle ticket which will be entered for a drawing for a free ticket for the 2007 Capital Shag Classic. The drawing will be held in early July. NVSC depends on volunteers to accomplish all the tasks necessary to provide the members of the club fun and interesting things to do throughout the year. Please volunteer to serve on one or more of the committees which will be planning the events coming up during the rest of 2007.

7 General Membership Meeting June 6, 2007 at Rene s The meeting will be after the lessons and before general dancing BORROWING SHAG VIDEOS... is EASY at NVSC!!! Whether you have taken all of the shag classes offered at NVSC or are just looking for new steps or tips on technique... our club has a constantly growing library of shag instructional videos. These videos contain more steps and tips than you can shake a stick at and they're FREE to club members! All you have to do is put down a FULLY refundable $25 deposit. See Jane James on Wednesday nights to borrow a video!!! A list of all available videos can be found on the flyer table Wednesday nights. If anyone is interested in being on the Junior Committee, please contact Cathy Metcalf at ccmetcalf@verizon.net or The Committee will be discussing a summer program for dancers under 21. Be involved in the preservation of our dance by sharing it with the younger generation.

NVSC information Shag Club Information "The Internal Revenue Service notified NVSC on April 19, 1999, that we have been accepted as a non-profit social club exempted from paying Federal income taxes. Anyone interested in reviewing NVSC's application and supporting documents provided to IRS, the IRS exemption letter, or the club's annual Form 990 to the IRS, please contact the club Treasurer." Board meetings are held each month and are open to any and all members who wish to attend. Unless put on the agenda, attendance is for observation, not participation. Since board meetings, at this time, are at board members homes, please alert the secretary, one week in advance, if you are interested in attending in case we need a larger facility. Copies of Board meeting minutes are available to members upon request from the secretary and posted on the nvshag.org website.

Go approximately 3 miles to Fairfax Circle. At the Circle, look for McDonalds. McDonalds is on Old Lee Highway. Take Old Lee Highway 1/10 of a mile. Rene s is on the ground floor of an office building on your LEFT with a lighted blue sign and directly across from Artie s Restaurant. Please do not bring in food or drink!!! This is a supper club.

You will never know how much they were all appreciated. Gary and Robbi Mann have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath oceanfront condo for rent during the fall SOS. Ann West just got two new grandbabies, twins, born Friday May 25, Vicki Tedesco and her partner Bill Barber took 1st place in the Masters Division of Grand Nationals. Brennar Goree and his partner Autumn Jones took 1st place in the Junior II Shag Division of Grand Nationals. Kari Jones and Brennar Goree were part of the National Shag Dance Team that came in third in the team division. Tori Robinette and her partner Justin Poston came in third in the Junion II division. Craig and Heather Jennings competed in the Carolina Classic Division of the Grand
