1 The Georgia Southern Heritage Volume 2, Issue 10 October 2014 I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E 1 From The Captain From the Captain Compatriots October was another busy month. The first weekend members of Troop 3 set up a recruiting booth at the Village of Andersonville for the annual reenactment. Safety Officer Captain King brought a number of his Florida troops up to join us in the parade. Also our 2nd in command, Lt. Col Greg Kalof made the trip from Miami to lead Around The State the parade through Andersonville and 3rd Battalion Major Johnny Strickland brought the Mechanized Cavalry trailer and pulled it in the parade. The 3rd weekend Trigger and I made the annual trip to the Fall Muster at Beauvoir. We arrived there on Friday, met and fellow shipped with some of the Mississippi men at the hotel and went out for some good gulf seafood. Saturday morning we attended a 5 hour class in the conference room of the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library. The class was informative and geared toward retention and recruitment. It was taught by Lt. Commander CIC Tom Strain, Executive director Greg Stewart and several members of the senior staff. During the same weekend Lt. Bridges lead a ride to Warm Springs, Pine mountain and the little White house and hooked up with Tim Loony from LaGrange. Trigger has added pics below for these events. For those that have already signed up for the November event at the Capture site in Irwinville, details are being worked out now and will be sent out soon. Sgt. Lashley (Cujo) and I drove to Statesboro on the 14th and visited with Jake. He was doing well the day we visited him. I know a lot of you keep up with him on Facebook, but if you re over his way stop by. He has a large covered deck and a chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association added a ramp to it, he has a nice set up. Make plans for Olustee, it ll be here before you know it. Trigger has added info below for the hotel in Lake City which is just east of Olustee, or as the Yankees call it, Ocean pond. For those that hunt good luck this season. 2 Communications Officer Compatriots, Once again, we have put another busy month behind us. Fall is definitely upon us, bringing us closer to the holidays. If your troop or camp is putting on a special event to help the less fortunate, or to celebrate the holiday season in some fashion, be sure to pass it on so others can attend. We need to make sure that we continue to keep our lines of communications open, if we are to keep our cause alive. With the fall weather brings outdoor activities such as hunting and getting outdoors to enjoy the changes in scenery. Please be careful if you go out in the woods this time of year. Always communicate with someone letting them know where you are going, and when to expect you back. And please, even if you are just on a hike to take photos of the leaves changing colors, wear a fluorescent orange vest. Too many people get careless in the woods and want to shoot at anything moving. Communicating with someone beforehand can be greatly beneficial, should an accident occur. I am always looking for something new to add to our websites, for everyone s enjoyment. If you are out taking seasonal photos, or just bagged that big buck, send in your favorite photos to share on the sites. Especially if it involves your child or grandchild s first hunt, fish etc. We must teach our future generations about our ancestors and our true southern cause. Just as our grandfathers, we should teach them how to be self-sufficient. As the old saying goes if you give a man a fish, you can feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you can feed him for a lifetime. For those of you that enjoy hunting and fishing, pass it on I promise, your children and grandchildren will learn much more than you realize... That was quite a lot of damage for a relatively low speed crash (35-40?). And hardly any way to avoid it apart from sheer luck or Providence, if you prefer. It being a patch of water in this case. While we were at Gettysburg I was trying to explain to one of the Massachusetts boy s wives why it may be that her husband liked to ride a scary motorcycle. I offered that it could be (among other things), that being constantly a split second away from violent death was somehow, exhilarating. I know not too warm, fuzzy, or subtle, but my DNA seems to come up a little short on those attributes. I don t mention this as some kind of false macho bravado. It s just an XY chromosome thing I think. That instant death concept comes to mind, time to time, as I cruise down the road, especially when I catch myself getting a little too comfortable. Kind of like when your toddler has been out of sight and quiet too long. Some kind of internal alarm goes off, your head snaps up, and you run check out the inevitable damage. The recollection of lapses in at least basic awareness of the road, in a 360 degree scope, gets me right back to condition orange ( credible threat ), which is where I need to be. It s not just the cages that are all out to kill us, it s the momentary inattention at the wrong moment that can do the job as well. We can t always avoid danger, but we can be as safe as possible, and still enjoy the ride. Killer Killer "Never stand and take a charge,... charge them too." 4 Around The State Troop 1 Dale Carpender visited the Guardian Center in Perry GA for the Zombie 5k run on Saturday 25 October. I talked to Dale on the phone a couple times before and after his run. He made it through the Zombies with 1 flag left, so he did pretty good out running the zombies. The Guardian Center is an area off I75 where they have disaster preparedness training for law enforcement, fire and rescue. So the run appeared real with wrecked cars, fallen building and debris everywhere. Zombies darting out from behind obstacles add to the fun. Dale got an opportunity to ride on a H1 Huey while there to add to the realism. He is pictured below with one of his bodyguards, notice the black rifle. 4

6 Troop 3 On Saturday 18 October Lt. Dan led Troop 3 on another great monthly ride. This month had several destinations to include Warm Springs, FDR Little White House, and the Bullock House for lunch, Pine Mountain and Sprewell Bluff just outside of Thomaston Ga. 6

8 Troop 4 On Saturday, October 24, 2014 was a little cold. Five members from Troop 4 and some of our friends left from Quittman, GA and headed to Rhodes Cemetery in Woodville, FL. It was where Private Allen Scott would be laid to rest next to his wife and children. The ride down to Woodville was a unique road, it was called a Canopy Road. We stopped and had a lunch before heading to the cemetery at 3 o'clock. The reburial of Allen Scott was a breath taking sight to see. After the service the Ladies of the Mary Ann Harvey Black Confederate Rose Society had refreshments, cakes, and cookies for everyone who had attended. Lt. Ballard 8
