5 DRAMA SHSA offers classes designed to teach basic concepts of acting and theatre through age-appropriate exercises and theatre games. The drama department develops the three tools of the actor: voice, body and imagination. We introduce our drama students to the process of acting, the role of the actor, and the discipline of theatre through rehearsal and performance. FAIRY AND FOLK TALE THEATRE Grades: Pre-K - Kindergarten (ages 4 6) Thursday 2:45-3:30 p.m. or 4-4:45 p.m. Tuition: $211 Fairy and Folk Tale Theatre is a highly interactive introductory experience to drama for preschool aged students focusing on imagination and communication. Curriculum consists of structured imaginative play centered on popular children s stories, folk tales and age appropriate games. An in-class performance is offered for parents and friends near the end of each semester to celebrate each student s progress. BEGINNING DRAMA Grades 1-2 Monday 3:15-4:15 or 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tuition: $402 Beginning Drama builds on the skills introduced in Folk and Fairy Tale Theatre. Students learn to collaborate in creating characters, scenes and stories in both scripted and improvised play. Student work is presented and celebrated at the end of the each semester in The Imagination Showcase staged in the SHSA Recital Hall. NEXT STEPS IN DRAMA Intermediate and Youth Drama provide the SHSA student with the opportunity to participate in fully staged performances at the Ursuline Arts Center. Students who enroll for the entire year are cast in one straight play and one musical theatre production in separate semesters. They continue to develop the tools of the actor through classroom instructional activities and practice discipline, concentration and focus through participation in well sequenced rehearsals. To ensure that our young artists are fully prepared for performances, an extended rehearsal period begins 2-3 weeks prior to each show s performance dates. These rehearsals will be in addition to the weekly class time and will be determined near the beginning of the semester. A $40 production fee for Intermediate and Youth Drama will be added to cover additional production related expenses. INTERMEDIATE DRAMA Grades: 3 5 Tuesday 4:30 6 p.m. Tuition: $474 The Intermediate Drama class leads to a fully staged production in the Ursuline Arts Center. 6 SEASON PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Youth Drama) October 31-November 1 The Wiz (SHA) November Honk! Jr. (Intermediate Drama) December 5-6 The Nutcracker (SHSA Dance Ensemble) December Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (SHA) February Anne of Green Gables (Intermediate Drama) March Disney s High School Musical (Youth Drama) April Cinderella (Dance Department) May 8-10 MUSIC SHSA s highly professional, credentialed music faculty offers a variety of private music lessons, group classes and ensemble opportunities for all ages. INSTRUMENTAL Individual private lessons are offered in banjo, brass, cello, dulcimer, guitar, harp, music composition, Suzuki and traditional piano, Suzuki and traditional violin, viola and woodwinds for ages 3 to adult. SUZUKI This method of learning to play an instrument was developed by Dr. Shin ichi Suzuki after WWII. He devoted his life to the method he called Talent Education. Suzuki based his approach on the belief that musical ability was not an inborn talent, but an ability that could be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited. (Suzuki) Young children may begin their training at SHSA at age 3. Parents must agree to attend the lessons and support the learning process. The Suzuki instructor meets privately with prospective parents and students to explain the program according to their studio requirements. VOCAL Formal voice training is available for ages 12 to adult. Prior to the teenage years, physical development is usually insufficient to attain notable vocal growth. However all children deserve the opportunity to develop their love of singing in what we call their natural voice. Exceptions can be made, regarding age restrictions with approval of studio instructor, department chair and executive director. In these private singing lessons children will learn to hear music more accurately (an essential skill!), to match pitch, and to learn music more quickly. The lessons will be structured to include learning how to read notes and beginning music theory. The student will also learn beginning vocal technique through breathing and vocal production games. The songs chosen for study will be age appropriate and will include a folk song, a classical solo in English, and a Broadway song, specifically selected to fit the student s voice.
